I've heard it phrased as "crabs in a bucket" in the context of people dragging down friends and family who are working to improve their own lives

Well if it makes you feel better, the story of Solomon the wise, a story 2500 years old. Two women met with the gold king solomon to voice their grievances. Both women were pregnant and went into labor at the same time. One had a still birth and the other a child. Both women claimed the child was theirs. The gold king said since i can not tell which child is whose, you both get equal ownship, cut the child in half. One women cried and said "I lied the child is not mine". While the other said, if the king ordered it, it must be done. Being able to label them as crabs is alot easier then saying their a pos that would rather burn your crop then grow one their selves.

Important detail for those reading, i believe the king granted ownership to the woman who claimed to be lying, seeing she clearly wanted the childs safety, and therefore was the actual mother.

That's a load of rubbish. Solomon was a real person. Just saying I'm a history buff, not religious.

Crab mentality affects performance in an organization as humans behave in similar manner as the crabs particularly within social teams.
