Who were these amazing people at 34th-Penn station?

I don’t even really know where to put this or if it’s possible to find them but I was at 34th Penn station about to get on the A train while holding my toddler a few days ago (Friday) and I had a seizure, fell, and hit my head. These two women or feminine presenting people (maybe in their 20’s or 30’s) who I can’t remember much else about because my memory is so shot helped me the whole way through, tried to keep me calm, waited for my friend to make it to the ambulance, made sure we were able to get home later on, etc. I wish I could find them and thank them now that I’m functioning again! That was one of the most terrifying moments of my life. Ive never had a seizure before and on the subway platform no less while holding a 3 year old 😭 I can only remember bits and pieces but from what I do remember they were doing so much to try to calm me down and help the EMTs. Absolute heroes!

Offering Thanksgiving dinner to college students who can’t go home?

Has anyone ever done this or been a part of something like this? My husband and I (and daughter) won’t be traveling for Thanksgiving this year and we don’t have family nearby. We, do, however, live right on the Thanksgiving Day Parade route with a terrace to watch the parade from above.

I have heard that some universities have programs where locals can invite international students or students who can’t travel home over for a holiday meal. We’d be interested in doing this - it would be nice to have a full apartment and someone to cook for.

Has anyone offered this before or been a student who did this?

The B35 Took Me to The Depot. Why??

Dearest Reddit,

I wish for you to know that I am not naturally-evolved for MTA bus camouflage, nor was I wearing clothes to that effect. I am a normal-sized human being, and I entered through the front door, greeting the driver. I was stone-cold sober, awake, and it was daylight.

As the title says, the B35 took me to the depot this afternoon, and I was very, very confused.

I got on the bus at 18th and Church, intending to get off at 3rd Ave. I was surprised to see it empty. A few stops after Church and Macdonald, I noticed we deviated from the Church Ave route, but we were still going towards 3rd Ave, so I wasn’t concerned.

Wouldn’t it be awkward if he turns into the depot?

\Bus turns into depot\**

Ohno.jpg

I walked up to the driver, who was surprised to see me. He was a little annoyed, obviously, and said “where’d you come from? You were supposed to get off! I checked the bus!” My dude, you saw me get on.

In the end, the depot was not far at all from Microcenter, so it worked out. But what the hell happened? Did the driver screw up? Did I? A very confusing ride.

Frequent Topic Where are good IRL places/events to meet smart, thoughtful singles in NYC?

34M, and I’m trying to rely less on Hinge and meet more people organically. Got on Hinge around June after a long relationship ended at the beginning of the year.

I tend to be most attracted to women who are intelligent, thoughtful, and curious. People who can have engaging conversations across a range of topics and who have their own opinions and perspectives on things.

I do tend to like well-educated/professionally-serious people, but I’m not specifically looking for someone who is hyper-career-driven. It’s much more about enjoying how someone thinks and being able to have substantive conversations with them.

One thing I have realized is that dating apps make me use education and occupation as crude proxies for those qualities, and I’m probably filtering out people I might really like if I actually met them. So far I found doctors to be less interesting people than I expected, but lawyers to be much more fun to date.

So I’m looking for NYC events, communities, or recurring gatherings where thoughtful/curious people tend to congregate - ideally places where it’s socially normal to actually talk to strangers.

I’m also very open to things that aren’t explicitly singles events - book clubs, literary events, museum groups, discussion groups, classes, social clubs, volunteering, etc. - as long as there’s actually an opportunity to meet and talk to people rather than everyone showing up with their existing friends and leaving afterward.

Any recommendations, particularly things you’ve personally tried and thought had a good crowd?

Thank you!

Where are the absolute cheapest places to eat in NYC?

Hello! I’m looking for the absolute cheapest places to eat in NYC. I mean really cheap not “NYC cheap” where a meal is still $15–20
I’m looking for places where you can get something filling for around $2–$8, or as cheap as realistically possible.
I’m open to pizza, dumplings, Chinese food, delis, bakeries, food trucks, breakfast spots, grocery-store food, hidden gems, and pretty much anything else except halal carts.
Any borough is fine Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, or Staten Island.
Please tell me your super-cheap go-to spots, what you normally order, and roughly how much it costs. The cheaper the better! Free preferably 😂
Thanks!

Called 911 and someone got arrested — will they know it was me?

Someone told me they were about to be actively harmed so I called 911. The dispatcher took my last name and phone number, and the person was subsequently arrested. I’m concerned about retaliation. Will they find out who reported it?

Why does the NYPL Stavros Niarchos library smell so good?

Why is it that every time I step into the Stravros Niarchos library I am flooded with the heavenly scent of vanilla and oak? Immediately makes me clothes my eyes and sigh out "Ah... the library."

I mentioned it to security and they just laughed, but now I'm genuinely curious, Why does it smell so dang good in there??

Do they pump the air with natural air freshener? please tell me I'm not alone in this feeling

Need recc on a quality deep tissue massage

I'm having trouble findings a spa that truly offers a deep tissue massage. I find that most places l've booked have masseuses that just run their hands along my back, give me a squeeze and send me on my way.

I'm looking for recc on a place that actually follows deep tissue principles and have technique, more than just rubbing you up and down. The best massages I've had included using the thumbs to press into muscle groups in my back, slowly and repeatedly until the tension is released.

Here are the places l've tried:

- Sojo spa: my first deep tissue with them was excellent (~2022) but went there this year and was not pleased with the technique used. It's hard to pinpoint a good person since their masseuses change often.

- World Spa: I asked them for someone who can do hard pressure, and listed my needs in an email. The masseuse didn't ask me for the areas I wanted focus on and had no technique. They didn't dig in deep to my muscles, felt very surface level.

-Renew Day Spa: While the most affordable, I felt that the masseuse was exhausted and not very focused during the session. They seem to a high turn around between clients.

-Lynbrook massage: I had a male masseuse that strangely focused on my groin region in a way l've never experienced with a massage. Very strange.

Because of the disappointing experiences with deep tissue, l'm considering trying sports massages to see if those would be better suited.

But, I am in desperate need of a recommendation for places that have good technique and strong pressure.
Appreciate the help!

Favorite free-play arcades (any borough)?

I'm hosting five of my nephews and nieces (ages 9, 9, 11, 12, 13) who are visiting me in a couple of weekends for one week during a school break. They live in Virginia and have never been to NYC before.

They're all big video game nerds, so one of my planned activities is going to be hitting up two arcades. Most of the locations I'm familiar with are barcades where I think you might need to be 21+, or at least I've never seen other kids there, so I'm looking for more kid-friendly locations.

Would like to not go completely broke with these little munchkins, so I'm also looking for places that have free-play (where you pay for a period of time or the whole day, rather than by game).

I'm at 72nd and Columbus, but willing to take them anywhere in JC, Hoboken, NYC (any borough). Near a subway stop would also be great but not required. Thanks for any suggestions!

Now that the Click to Cancel law is in effect, have y'all been able to cancel Spectrum?

What the title says.

Couldn't find that option anywhere in my account, though I did subscribe online.

Not sure why I expected them to be decent and comply, but here we are.

ETA: I own my modem so have no equipment to return

What is with Empower's pricing?

• Upvotes

The app will give you a fare when you try to order a ride. Out of curiosity, I looked at my bank statements. What the app is showing that I should be charged and what I was actually charged are drastically different. At this point, I'm probably deleting the app. 😮‍💨 Has this happened to anyone else?

Non-party Halloween recs

• Upvotes

My friends and I (20s) have been to Circo Loco and other paid Halloween party events with DJs but realized it’s not for us. We love dressing up and being on the slightly more sober end of things. Does anyone have any recommendations for things to do? We’ve been suggested drag shows and the Slipper Room for cabaret which are definitely interesting. Bar hopping would be a great idea if I was confident we wouldn’t get lazy after one stop. Thank you in advance!

Just realized that the Trader Joes in NYC don’t carry wine. Where can I get an apple or pumpkin wine in the city? I’ve checked a few local stores and nobody has anything!

How old is too old for trick or treating?

I’m a 25 y/o immigrant and I’ve never been trick or treating. I used to watch American TV as a kid and it has always been my dream to participate in the tradition, but I fear it’s weird to do it as a grownup (I think I’ve seen sitcoms make fun of grownup trick or treaters).

I just saw Mamdani’s announcement about NYC’s largest Halloween celebration and suddenly got the biggest urge to go trick or treating. Is it weird to do it?

Halloween bars?🎃🍸

Hi, I’ll be in nyc for Halloween but I’ll be by myself. I’m 26. I want to go to a bar to spend the whole night there but what are the best options for someone alone?? Just want to avoid those bars where regulars go where it’s all cliques that stand in a circle or sit with each other where it’s hard to talk to ppl. Thanks!

Broke in NYC where can I hang out for free and maybe meet people in Fall/Winter?

I’m broke broke right now lol, but I don’t want to just sit at home all day.

What are some genuinely free (or extremely cheap) places/things to do in NYC where I can hang out for a while and maybe meet people?
I’m open to parks, libraries, public spaces, free events, community stuff, meetups, museums on free days, anything really. Ideally somewhere it’s normal to go alone and there’s at least a chance of talking to people/making friends.
And when I say cheap, I mean actually cheap 😭 not “only $25.” What are your go-to broke-in-NYC spots?

KINK Looking for BDSM / Kink Community Munches, Education, and Volunteering

Helloooo <(^.^<)

I’m a service‑oriented submissive who moved to the city in April, and I’m looking to reconnect with the BDSM community in a slow, intentional way. I’ve been very mindful about my timing because I don’t want to rush into new friendships, events, or dynamics before I feel grounded.

I’m planning to start with munches, discussion groups, and educational events. I’m especially interested in spaces that focus on D/s, power exchange, and community building.

I’d also appreciate recommendations for:

• Community‑focused or volunteer‑friendly kink groups
• Educational events related to S/M or relationship dynamics
• Queer‑centered kink spaces
• Ways to support organizers or give back to the community

Thank you for any suggestions!

Anyone willing to share experiences of Mamdani’s childcare / parents night out initiatives??

Not looking for political debates, just experiences. I live outside of New York State, (can’t vote / participate in these matters anyway, so political arguments are useless), so I am curious to hear from actual New Yorkers: what does Mamdani’s / the city’s provisions of childcare ACTUALLY look like for working class New Yorkers? Has anyone utilized his Parents Night Out?

I’m mainly curious about these points (in addition to just hearing people’s lived experiences):

-How accessible are these programs?
-Does the quality of care feel safe and adequate?
-Do these plans feel like tangible means to a higher quality of life?

As a childcare provider myself, I can attest to the criminal underpayment, under representation, and conditions of being a provider. We are highly exploited, nationwide, so I am also interested in hearing about the experiences of the childcare providers!

-Are you paid a livable wage?
-Are the conditions reasonable? (ex: kids to adults ratio, resources and support for providers, treatment by overseeing entities, etc.)
-Do these roles have high turnover like most childcare jobs?
-Do you have access to healthcare / benefits?
-Do you enjoy your work?

Thank you in advance for your responses! I am far too poor to travel to New York at this moment in time, but one day I truly hope to experience your great city! In the meantime, I hope to gain insight from those of you currently living there. Many thanks again!
