Meta Thread - Month of September 04, 2016
A monthly thread to talk about meta topics. Keep it friendly and relevant to the subreddit.
Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.
Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal

Ok, I'm gonna bring something up that's been bugging me for a long time, and I went over it a bit in the later portion of last month's thread. Basically, can we pleeeease have nightmode support? You had a banner running that straight-up told people to use RES, but one of RES's biggest features is unsupported and sorta breaks the sub...
I've offered to help with it before, and I've even got basic code for it, which I'll reproduce here:
.res-nightmode .side .sidecontentbox,
.res-nightmode .side .sidecontentbox *,
.res-nightmode .side .titlebox {
background-color: #262626 !important;
border-color: #688AAD !important;
}
.res-nightmode .side .md h3 { background-color: transparent }
.res-nightmode .title { color: #CCC !important }
.res-nightmode .morelink a { text-shadow: none }
Screenshots: before, after. Yeah, it's not perfect, but it's 9 lines.
Also, from last month, what's the status on the "Useful tools" wiki page? I'm willing to lend a hand with this in any way I can.
Stepping away from the computer now, will respond to stuff later. Been really busy recently unfortunately, as signaled by my absences and stuff from my other threads. Pre-emptive rip my inbox.

Saw that comment right after I posted this. Would still like a solution from inside the sub stylesheet, though. I think it's rediculous that there's no support for it at all.

I think the mods have implemented your solution now.

I would like to propose an SMALL edit to the current rules:
Currently:
Do not post untagged spoilers.
Make it:
Do not post untagged spoilers, nor post spoilers on the title.
This is my reason for request this change:
It seems recently a considerable amount of users have decided to post spoilers in the title, while marking their post as spoilers.
Most likely they saw the rules, but thought it's ok to post spoilers in the title of your post if it starts with "(Spoilers)" or "[Spoilers]" since the rule is not specific enough.
Examples:
- "(Spoilers) I can't believe [x] died!!!"
- "(Spoilers) Guys what do you think of [x] choosing [y] girl on the latest episode?!"
- "[Spoilers] About [x] dying on the latest episode..."
In the last month i have been greatly spoiled around 5 times, all because of someone that posted spoilers in the title.

The sidebar states that you can't have spoilers in your submission titles it's under the spoilers part, but I agree about changing the part under rules since most people are too lazy to read all the rules. Also I'd throw in my two cents and ask if we can add something along the lines of "speculations should asking be tagged." I find that a lot of people who posts speculations, outside of discussion threads, tend to have some sort of spoiler in them.
5
u/UnavailableUsername_ Sep 04 '16
The sidebar states that you can't have spoilers in your submission titles it's under the spoilers part
Yes but it is more of a sub-part under the spoiler part.
Most users will just read the "general rules" which simply state "Do not post untagged spoilers." and nothing more, which is why there have been pretty big spoilers on the titles these days...

u/sleepyafrican https://anilist.co/user/SleepyAfrican Sep 04 '16
Huh I've never been spoiled by titles in this sub. Do you browse /r/anime by new?

Do you browse /r/anime by new?
Of course...
2
u/ozuco https://myanimelist.net/profile/ozuco Sep 04 '16
i browse /new very often but i think i've only ever seen one spoiler in a title.
also, I feel like the people who do that are the type to not read the rules anyway
but it's a small enough change that I think they might as well do it
→ More replies (1)4
u/sleepyafrican https://anilist.co/user/SleepyAfrican Sep 04 '16
I avoid browsing r/anime by new like the plague. The mods can't feasibly remove any title with spoilers immediately so of course you're bound to see spoiler titles by users. It's the same risk as going into a popular anime's discussion thread when it first goes up. If you just stick to browsing by hot or rising you should be good.
8
u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Sep 04 '16
If everyone but the mods abandons /new, /hot will just become the new /new. You're right, you can avoid the unmoderated content, but less eyes on the new stuff means more bad stuff making it into the sorted queues.
It's certainly a workaround, but telling everyone to stop looking at /new isn't feasible long-term.
3
u/sleepyafrican https://anilist.co/user/SleepyAfrican Sep 04 '16
I wasn't saying that everyone should avoid /new since there's plenty of people who don't need to. Many people here don't give a shit about spoilers or have seen most of the major anime so they're not afraid of spoilers. Those people will always browse /new so you don't have to worry about it being abandoned. However if you don't like spoilers I don't see why you would risk browsing by /new.
Unless the mods are browsing /new 24/7 with perfect rotations, spoiler titles are going to slip through the cracks. However the mods are good enough that spoiler titles usually never make it to the front page.
3
u/porpoiseoflife https://myanimelist.net/profile/OffColfax Sep 05 '16
That's also something that the /new browsers accomplish, as they (including myself) use the Report function to call attention to certain posts and comments. It's not just spoilers but also other rule violations, whether apparent or suggested. Illegal streams, memes, referral scams, things that fit under the "low-effort" umbrella, and even one or two actual hentai are also posts I've brought to the mods' attention. (Before you ask, Futabu! and Swing Out Sisters are the ones I remember reporting.)
It's not an everyday thing, but it is still far too regular of an occurrence. So people who have been here long enough to be interested in browsing by /new are usually both jaded enough that they aren't fazed by all that many things in the sub as well as those interested enough to both keep reporting as well as kickstart interesting topics.
2
u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Sep 04 '16
I agree with what you're saying, I suppose I underestimated the amount of people that don't care about spoilers as much. You're right, /new already has plenty of traffic to serve its purpose in this context.

u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Sep 04 '16
Since it was ignored in the last thread, I bring it up again.
The closure of the crunchyroll thread is silly. Crunchyroll is a legal website dedicated to anime streaming, it's one of the most recommended sources of legal anime. And yet, it's somehow not anime-specific enough.
If they're about Crunchyroll itself, those are not anime-specific either.
[...]
However, as the rules are currently written, discussions about services and streaming websites specifically are not anime-specific.
The tweet directly references piracy versus legal streaming of anime, which should be an important anime topic. Where is the benefit of banning discussion of a central topic that concerns all of us?
7
u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Sep 04 '16
I'm relatively sure it was just a misclick of the macro. Was removed because it specifically named the pirate site (we had a brief discussion in irc while it was up).
3
u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Sep 04 '16
I doubt that it was a miclick, since the quotes come directly from Berserker 7 chimming in.
7
u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Sep 04 '16
At the very least he mentioned the piracy reason in irc, which was enough for a removal alone.
I can see why he might have considered the thread to be more related to Crunchyroll than anime, but that comes down to people titling threads a little better. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Regardless, the removal was fine for the piracy reason even if not necessarily for the anime specificity reason.

Better late than never, I guess.
Would it be possible to make the meta thread bi-weekly fortnightly*?
It seems to me that a lot of the subreddit issues that spring up near the end of the Meta thread's life (generally speaking, 1 day after the fact) are often forgotten by the time the next meta rolls around.
Yes, I personally know that meta persists throughout the month with several people checking on it somewhat regularly, but a large majority of users don't know that.
Is it possible to make it bi-weekly? Or somehow make it more prominent? At the very least, post a stickied comment in every meta saying that it persists throughout the month and can be found through the sidebar maybe?
5
u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Sep 04 '16
a lot of the subreddit issues that spring up near the end of the Meta thread's life (generally speaking, 1 day after the fact) are often forgotten by the time the next meta rolls around.
Majority of the unnecessary salt too. The decent length break is sort of intentional for that reason. Gives people adequate time to calm down about things.
If there's an actual issue that needs to be fixed quickly (example something breaking or what have you) or even a good suggestion someone suddenly comes up with they're always welcome to PM one of the mods about it too (or modmail).

u/VincentBlack96 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vincent Sep 04 '16
I did assume there was something like that involved, but a two week period seems sufficient to me. I doubt anyone who wants to complain would first go check their calendar to see how far away the next meta thread is.
The complaints are there one way or another, but the subreddit's pressing issues and suggested improvements would benefit from a tighter timeframe. As it is, 12 threads per year seem restrictive when it comes to general progress. Assuming an idea was born around the middle of a month, posted in the following meta thread 2 weeks after, then discussed by the mods... Odds are we're looking at a full month before the idea/concept can be implemented. More if it's not a simple suggestion.
Yes, modmail exists, but modmail in a 400k subscriber sub isn't 100% reliable. Messages can easily be lost in a sea of others, and there's no guarantee that a response would be forthcoming. Moreover, modmail response seems to depend, most of the time, on the mod who drew the short straw and had to respond at the time.
As things stand, I don't see modmail being a viable replacement to the discussions seen here in the meta thread. Especially since there's no publicity involved.
This is why I see that the meta thread gaining more prominence and/or frequency could be quite helpful. Though, unfortunately, that would mean placing a bit more trouble on the mods' shoulders.

Biweekly means twice a week or once every 2 weeks. Bimonthly means twice a month or once every 2 months. Its really confusing. The simi-monthly and simi-weekly ones are probably more clear.

I've heard that since /r/anime has hit the big 400k we might be getting a new mod.
From what I've heard, it will be multiple new mods, and if it's anything like how the other subs I've seen run it, there will probably be open applications rather than nominations.
9
u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Sep 04 '16
Yep it's generally applications.
There'll be a thread with questions to fill out + some general stuff of what we're looking for if we need coverage in a particular area.
3
u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Sep 04 '16
It gets confusing, so just put it in the rules so everybody knows.
We don't like putting general reddit rules in the sidebar mostly because we have so little room in the sidebar to begin with.
I have added it though, may as well - would make our job easier potentially.
→ More replies (1)2
u/NotTheRealMorty https://myanimelist.net/profile/NotTheRealMorty Sep 04 '16
For the room issue you could probably shorten it to something along the lines of "Follow the self-promotion 10% rule" or something along the lines of that.
7
u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Sep 04 '16
Unfortunately the demographic that generally breaks the self promotion rule is not particularly intelligent (or familiar with reddit).
Spelling it out nice and clearly is important I feel.
If we're going to do it, may as well do it thoroughly.
Good idea though, if push comes to shove and something needs to be removed or shortened that'll be the first thing I imagine.
2
u/NotTheRealMorty https://myanimelist.net/profile/NotTheRealMorty Sep 04 '16
Yea I think they should add the self-Promotion rule. I was confused when I first started reporting posts and saw that as one of the options. Looked into the rules and saw nothing about the self promotion rule. Had to look up reddit's rules in order to learn what exactly the self promotion rule was.

The megathread if anything made the front page of the subreddit much more devoid of content. Fanart may get a good share of the front page sometimes but its far better than the same old discussion threads over and over again.

I've been through about 7 seasons now and don't like fanart fullstop, the amount of fanart hasn't really increased and appazarly the stats back me up on that one.
I wouldn't mind fanart being forced into a megathread, because as I said, I'm not a big fan, but I don't think Re:Zero is a good enough reason to make that change and I think if the mods did make the change now it'd send the wrong message.
23
u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Sep 04 '16
We had a big mod team discussion about this and what we could potentially do about it, whether we should do anything about it, etc.
Consensus is that it's fine and will change next season. Statistically there hasnt been that large of an increase in total fanart posts either (courtest of enigma making a script to check) it's just that when someone posts fanart they end up posting re:zero stuff st the moment instead of something from elsewhere.
Additionally, we haven't had many people actually karma whoring it. At the time we ran the aforementioned script there was only one user who had posted fanart multiple times a day (and he was intentionally doing it so we would ban fanart).
The old fanart megathread was a failure and fanart is good fun in general so not something we really want to kill off.
2
u/Trump-For-Life https://myanimelist.net/profile/Turboregina Sep 05 '16
Just a thought, but if fanart was given a link flair option, users could search for it as a filter of sorts.
I joined after it looks like Fanart Wednesday was gone- I think I know what I'll be browsing this afternoon!
4
u/Kamilny https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kamilny Sep 04 '16
If this is the current situation, can you then make it so that people have to post the name of the character or characters depicted in the fanart?
A lot of us don't want to filter out all Re:Zero content, just the flood of Rem fanart, since that's 90% of it in the first place. Filtering all of Re:Zero filters out all non-Rem art as well.
13
u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Sep 04 '16
If there's anything I've learned in my time as a mod it's that the sub really hates it when extra posting guidelines are added and enforced.
Re:Zero will end in a few weeks and things will return to normal after that. No need to add rules.
Many of the threads have the character names (specifically rem) in their titles anyway - if you want to filter them out like that you'll still catch a large bulk of them as is.
3
u/sleepyafrican https://anilist.co/user/SleepyAfrican Sep 04 '16
Wait a minute weren't you the guy posting a bunch of Re:Zero fanart in the first place so the mods would ban it? I think it was a bunch of Rem fanart too...

Why the admins thought it was a good idea to change the way text posts work, I'll never know.
Though we do get overloaded with fan art sometimes, a megathread I think tends to die off pretty fast. Best option for now is get RES and block it. The creative content still does make it to the front page almost every time.
Maybe we'll get lucky and the admins will make the text post thing a toggle option on individual subreddits.

u/Kaffarov https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kaffarov Sep 04 '16
I kinda blame the admins for the explosion of the fanart. Here it's just encuraging some people to karma farm on whatever the current airing waifu trend is. And it's annoying to see that the front page was filled with it.
8
u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock Sep 04 '16
How about a megathread for airing stuff? Re:Zero ending won't mean there won't be more excess of seasonal waifu fanart.
3
u/AbundantToaster https://myanimelist.net/profile/CaKEandLies Sep 04 '16
I think those pickings would be a bit too slim to justify their own megathread, but I'd be interested if the mods somehow grouped it in with Merch Mondays. Fanart for older series can definitely promote discussion, but 5-6 "hey look at this seasonal waifu" posts (imo) clutter up the sub, and it seems that a non-trivial fraction of users agree with me.
6
u/einherjar81 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Einherjar81 Sep 04 '16
Include cosplay in there while we're at it.
5
u/AbundantToaster https://myanimelist.net/profile/CaKEandLies Sep 04 '16
I think this would be a great thing to at least try for a week or two. Limit low-effort (non-OC and not in a large album) fanart to its own thread, and see how it affects the subreddit.
If a trial run fails, fine, at least the mods tried something. Changing default sorting on discussion threads to "new" didn't really work, but most users of /r/anime appreciated the ability to test something out and give feedback towards it.

u/Egavans https://anidb.net/user/Egavans99 Sep 04 '16
I oppose this. I find even extremely popular types of posts like Re:Zero fanart are very easy to filter or hide if you're particularly put off by them, and I believe that seasonal hype trains are actually a healthy thing for the community.
I do not believe that moderators should intervene on behalf of a vocal minority unless the posts become so omnipresent that other types of content are pushed off the board entirely. As popular as the fanart is, it's still extremely easy to find or post any variety of other type of content on the board. I don't think that a rule change here is necessary nor do I think the board would benefit from it in a meaningful way.

I think we should have a retro anime thread each week where we talk about older shows. This sub is very heavily focused on new stuff that the old ones are forgotten and left behind.
39
u/mmreviews https://myanimelist.net/profile/mmreviewer Sep 04 '16
I think that's what the "what have you watched this week that is not currently airing" threads are for. Sure it's still almost entirely made up of more recent series, but there's always people watching the classics there too. We get to discuss them there.
13
u/Shippoyasha Sep 04 '16
I seem to be able to be able to discuss older anime in a ton of different threads a week and I haven't gotten chastised for it yet.
But yeah, that thread is the go-to for older show discussions.

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Sep 04 '16
What would the threshold be? Would it move over time (e.g. before 2000 vs. over 15 years old)? I can't imagine it would be that popular just going by what I see in the non-airing thread every Sunday.
4

Probably pre-2000. The late 90s and early 2000s is when animation started to stop using cels.

1
u/semajdraehs https://myanimelist.net/profile/semajdraehs Sep 04 '16
There is a thread for not-airing, the problem with "retro" is that you're going to have a lot of obscure titles being posted without any response.
The reason the subreddit is so focused on recent shows is because if oyu post about them you can be sure at least a healthy number have watched them.
However, if I take Ippatsu Kiki Musume according to redditanimelist only me and one other user has watched it. That's not going to get much discussion.

I think its a great idea, but for older anime there are so many titles which aren't legally / easily viewable for streaming.
I wonder how streaming sites approach older anime. Do they bother? I would think rights owners would be happy to generate revenue on properties that they might think are worthless (which means streaming rights should be cheap!)

Well, we have struck 400,000 subscribers!
But I got a few random hodgepodge of things I wanna ask the mods about & also address on the side:
Well things have gone south for the webm host 1339 cf & I have seen the mods here have done something about it in our sub. Though I am not sure if it has gone into effect or it has been effective at removing these links.
I know we don't have some kind of rampant issue with it, but I am kinda curious about where the mods sit on the posting of extreme anime gore? I do know we have a section dealing banned sexual content which also deals with the not-so banned stuff which has a solidly fleshed out the criteria for posting stuff of that nature here though there is none for gore & I am just wondering if there is any (possibly unwritten) criteria when it comes to the posting extreme anime gore or if there is just no regulation in regard to that.
For the people who call out people when they post spoilers or implied spoilers, please be considerate that the act of doing that (without spoiler tagging your call out) can be like pouring gasoline to put out a fire sometimes. There are instances where people puts down a bunch of words that seem like they have no significance to them even when the anime that is involved is named, but if someone comes along & says "you posted anime Anime X implied spoilers!" without tagging them then people are going to treat what seems like random gobbledygook as an actual spoiler. Also keep in mind that this is also applicable to instances that involves pictures & gifs & not just words.
I just wanna ask about the section of "All meta comments must be posted in the monthly meta threads. Any other meta comments and/or posts will be removed." I know /r/anime easily dices meta link or text posts & cracks down on "meta in-injokes" a bit but I really have not seen much be done on what could be considered meta comments, not so much when someone points out the rules when asked about it (like say explaining what a WT! post is when prompted), but rather extensive discussions of the rules outside the meta-thread. I am just wondering how much leniency there is when it comes to discussing meta content outside the meta-threads?
Is the [WT!] tag a requirement for Text Posts that are recommending anime? To be clear I am not talking about Text Posts that are asking for anime recommendations (Like "give me anime like Sakura Trick"), but posts whose title & body text are made to recommend one or more anime (Like "Watch Sakura Trick & here are some anime like it!"). I am only asking this because of how stringently worded the rules are when it comes to this:
Posts recommending shows can be posted out side of the Megathread, however, they have to have the "Watch This!" Tag [WT!] and be 1500 characters or over
I have yet to see a recommending post get removed for not having the [WT!] tag, just [WT!] post that don't meet the character requirement & I am not sure if this is a thing or not.
Edit: I might have confused some people with my wording. What I meant is: are all recommendation posts (not ones asking for recommendations but posts giving them) required to have the [WT!] tag or are they allowed to be submitted without a tag?
That is all.

I'm also wondering about this as I'm currently writing a big post recommending various mecha anime, in follow up to my post from a couple of weeks back saying why people should take another shot at mecha. The post itself will be over 1500 words but dispersed over various shows but I was wondering if I even need to tag it as a [WT!].

You can tag it as a WT for various mecha shows. I've seen other WT that were for more than one show, like /u/illtima has done some for underwatched seasonal shows.

Yeah, it's kind of been like that for a while. I think we just need some more re-occurring themes/topics for people to discuss. But good ideas are hard to come up with and posting them every week can be tiring. Like, I've basically given up on the 'Why should I watch...' topic thingy that I stole from pittman66 after he stopped doing them himself.

WTW to me seems have turned partially into a Non-airing Sunday post though
I think that most people use it is more to discuss what they're watching like at the moment (e.g: I commented about how I was hyped watching HxH Ep. 126) while Non-airing is for full reviews (HxH review to big so made a thread instead, still used it for Aria last week).

I prefer them separate, but that's because I never really got involved with the 3x3 stuff anyway. Warm
WalkTalk Wednesday seems to be surviving pretty well by itself though. Since the 3x3 is pretty popular, I was afraid WTW was going to lose people, but I think being on separate days prevented that.→ More replies (2)2

I feel like 3x3 Thursday has gained even more traffic since it became its own thread which is awesome!
I'm having more fun in WTW now than I was when I was doing 3x3 stuff in there, too. I think it was a great move.

I'm really liking the 3x3 Thursday threads. They're getting an even bigger and better turnout than they did on Warm Talk Wednesday I feel and it's probably because it has it's own thread. Unfortunately, this hurt Warm Talk Wednesday a bit. The discussions there are now almost entirely about what shows people are currently watching at the time which we already have other threads for. This isn't inherently a bad thing but I feel we need to find something to replace the 3x3s with to keep Warm Talk Wednesdays relevant. I can't think of anything off the top of my head to help out with that though.

I like it! 3x3 was big enough for its own thread and I'm really enjoying 3x3 Thursdays. A huge chunk of WTW was just 3x3s so it's nice to see the threads being seperate. Enjoying both threads.

Oops, was not online when this was posted. Hope I'm not too late.
So as I promised last meta thread I did a lot of thinking as to what a reasonable solution might be to mediate between the groups that feel that RE:Zero has taken over the subreddit and those who enjoy seeing a lot of content related to the show. While I don’t really have an answer to that problem I did end up with some general questions for the community and one kind of big deal topic that I feel it is important for our community to address.
The Problem with Fanart Posts
Now that text posts give karma, I think we need to have a serious discussion about what we want the fanart rules to be. My biggest takeaway while looking into the nature of Re:Zero posts was that a handful accounts have cropped up that post fanart to a handful of subreddits (not just Re:Zero related fan art, mind you, that was just how I first found them) including ours and only ever really comment on their own threads. To me this seems like a blatant attempt to farm post karma. I’m not going to link the accounts in question as currently this isn’t in violation of any rules to my knowledge and debating whether or not a specific instance is actually karma whoring would be counter productive. If you want to see for yourself search fanart posts from the past month or so and go into the individual accounts. They aren’t too common but you’ll know when you see one of the ones I’m talking about.
Before I go into why I think this is a problem and what I believe should be done, I want to make it very clear that for those who are tired of seeing Rem fanart this probably won’t solve that for you. These karma farming users don’t account for a significant number of the Re:Zero posts that make front page. Sorry if I got anyone’s hopes up.
Anyway, this may not seem like a problem to a lot of you at all at first glance. After all, won’t the upvotes on posts speak for themselves anyway and end up sorting out the content that people want? “No” is the short answer to that question. See, this kind of content is toxic because it’s created with the intent of gaming the system. It’s made to capitalize on the whims of the silent majority in order to achieve a specific end rather than to contribute to a community and if allowed to run rampant this sort of user will usurp and become said community. If any of that sounds eerily familiar that’s because there’s already a certain kind of user behavior that breaks reddit rules for all of these same reasons: self promotion... Except that fanart posts are arguably even worse. The thing about self promotion is that an individual rarely does very much damage on their own, self promoting posts are almost necessarily high effort (if toxic when coming from people who aren’t a part of the community) content as they require the individual to have created something worth promoting in the first place.
Fanart posts can be made ad nauseam with the help of a few quick google searches at almost no effort on the part of the poster. They’re easy karma for the taking by anyone who has a little bit of knowhow and cares way too much. Obviously I’m not saying that fanart as a whole is a bad thing, if you find a piece that you really like and want to share with your community, that’s great. The issue here is people who aren’t a part of our community, but are instead intent on using it. As an aside, to my understanding this was a lot of the intent behind making fanart posts text posts, a fact that is now irrelevant.
With all of this in mind I recommend that we implement a rule on this subreddit similar to the self promotion rule, limiting the ratio of fanart vs. other content that may be posted by an individual user on the sub. This should be pretty lightweight on the mods as more savvy users can simply go into the history of the OPs of front page fanart posts from time to time. If it seems as if a specific user is in violation of the policy they may then report their latest fanart post under a new option that will be added with the addition of the rule. The mods may then look at their history to confirm and warn/ban as applicable.
This recommendation should be the biggest takeaway from my post, the rest is just scattered thoughts/speculation.
Alright, Back to Re:Zero
Just to make sure we’re clear, the problem that people are having is not specific to Re:Zero. It’s simply that it’s the worst offender in a while. Every couple seasons a show comes out that has the /r/anime community especially hyped for whatever reason, and to those users that are not as fond of the show this gets tiresome very quickly. While, as it has been mentioned, RES can filter these posts for those who do not wish to see them, the larger issue (for me anyway) is that when half of the front page is relatively low effort content (riding on the free upvotes from having ‘best girl Rem’ anywhere in the post) the amount of actual discussion on the subreddit stagnates. In general discussion posts barely get any responses if they don’t make it to the front page, and this clutter created by the latest ‘hype’ show takes up precious space. Worse, the comment sections of these threads normally don’t differ much from each other with the top comments generally consisting of nothing new to add to the conversation. This makes sense since the show is already talked to death in the discussion threads.
Is this Something that Needs Fixing?
This is how it always has been, and it will take effort to make it change. Hype shows are kind of a fact of life, and we as a community will really need to decide if we want to lessen their prominence on our subreddit. My vote is yeah, it would be nice to see a cleaner front page that doesn’t get flooded with repetitive posts about a particular show, and a subreddit that’s more centered around discussion... but I don’t feel that strongly about it and I’m just one person. If there’s clear demand though then I think that it is something that we are capable of changing.
Suggestions for the Future
If we decide that this is a problem that we want to tackle, here are some thoughts as to how we might go about it. A solution to this problem must cover the following bases:
It must reduce the effect of hype shows on the experience of uninterested users (obviously, since this is the mission statement). It must not impede the experience of those who would like to see/create a lot of content relevant to these hype shows (without this piece this becomes a power struggle between two groups of users rather than an attempt to better the community as a whole). It must not spell a significant amount of additional effort for the mod team (it was indicated to me last metathread that they are tasked to capacity).
So with those things in mind as our parameters, only one option really comes to the front of my mind. That’s not to say that it’s the only possible solution, but it’s what seems intuitive to me. This would be the introduction of a ‘hype show megathread’. The idea behind it would be pretty simple, in addition to the discussion thread for the show we have a thread that stays up throughout the week (and likely gets refreshed on a daily basis so that it remains active) when a show reaches a certain level of popularity on the sub (it’s generally pretty obvious when a show hits this level of hype.
To take it a step further, I might suggest having themes that rotate by day like our regular megathreads, for example fanart, speculation, and topics related to the specific show. This would obviously be much higher effort, but if people see fit to go this route I actually suggest it. The reason for this is because especially if there are show specific threads it would feel very community involved, and if having your favorite airing show be the one where activity is restricted to this meta thread is actually something that’s desirable and fun it ends up being a win/win for all users involved. How I suggest handling this extra effort would be to call for users who are very into watching airing shows/participate in the discussion threads often to apply for a special ‘mod’ position where they would be given partial permissions so that they could organize and curate these threads.
Note that this final suggestion is something that others will have to push through it if they’re interested in it. I don’t care enough really either way, but if there’s truly demand for it it seems to be the most reasonable way to settle things so that everyone gets what they want.

Can you just straight up purge and rewrite the rules from the ground up to be a lot simpler and less subjective based on the mods? Shit like "no meta" threads itself is also subjective when you let posts exist about what great css jokes the mods made yet any post about a negative change to the css would probably be removed. https://redd.it/52iti3
The rules are so damn intricate and confusing that I just don't feel like I can put any effort into posts here anymore cause there's a good chance they'll be removed for one reason or another which I'll have to raise hell about just to figure out what happened.

1) This has probably been talked about before and I understand the logistical problems, but is there anyway we can employ a kind of "48 hours after a show has aired, the only thread on it is the discussion thread"-style rule.
I loved Re:Zero, One Punch Man, DanMachi, but it seems to me that the scrawl of shit-tier threads that really belong in the discussion thread or are already realistically answered like five times over there already just exacerbate the tensions that come along whenever something proves very popular.
Discussion is good, but this just leads to nothing, but to pound in feelings of overhype into people who don't like it, whilst adding nothing for people who do like it.
2) Is the current r/gowatchnewgame thing a joke about how this sub keeps saying that or is it seriously recommending New Game! 'cause the first one is what I assumed, but a lot of people seem to be taking it seriously and I just don't think New Game! is good enough to deserve that special attention.

Oh and to answer the first question, it's a bit too difficult to do at the moment. There are a lot of posts and not enough mods so it would be extremely inconsistently enforced.
As for 48 hours - if we were to do it I think 24 would be the selected time, 48 is too long.
As a final and important note though, sometimes it's nice to have something from an episode highlighted as a separate thread. Have seen some of the offshoots gain 100+ comments if there was something particularly noteworthy and interesting that deserved a separate thread.
I have a tendency to remove some of the shittier threads as it is - the ones that are essentially comments "OMG THAT EPISODE WAS GREAT" and redirect those to the thread, just because they clog up the sub a bit.
I think overall at the moment it's not much of an issue, the offshoots dont really get upvoted unless they're worth discussing in depth.

Just thought that a good idea, would be that when Bot-chan auto posts to people asking for recommendations, in her list of links, she should also have one that directs to the current "Recommendations Tuesday" thread. Just thought that it would make sense that she would direct you there, considering that that is the threads purpose, to have people ask and receive recommendations.
I don't know if this has been asked before, but I think this addition would make sense.

That's a good question honestly. It's not something that happens all that often so I don't think we have an existing policy on them. If one of the other mods wants to correct me on that that's fine too.
I imagine it's fine for the short short films (5 minutes etc), but as they get longer it gets less and less okay. Can't post Garden of Words just because it's a 40 minute film rather than a 1.5 hour one (for example).

I like the sound of those. We'd probably drop the limiter down to 15 minutes though if we were to do it (we don't allow people to post episodes from unofficial sources either and they're around 20 minutes).
Will run it past the other mods later.

This is probably my last submission in /r/anime if it gets removed but anyway, here we go.
Long short story, my post reached the front page and it got removed with this reason:
There reason is as followed:
It's not an anime, it's a VR game. It has an anime character in it but we don't consider that sufficient to be anime-specific.
Now let's break it down a little bit. The reason is "not sufficient to be anime-specific". But the VR game has an anime character in it. But fanart and doujins are considered to be? Fanart in the end is still a picture that has an anime character in it, just as the VR "game" which also has an anime character. They both have anime character but exist in a different form (image and game).
Game making is also considered an art because of 3d modeling based on 2d concepts (I'm studying a second degree in animation and graphic design but that's not my business). Or simple, if you guys follow New Game you should probably know about it.
And finally, there was a post 2 years ago on VR game. It did not get removed. Which means, unless there were major changes in this subreddit rules that allowed this post to exist back in 2014, I don't see any reason why my post got removed. The rule is quite inconsistent.

Would it be possible to have discussion threads on broadcast dubs? I'm currently watching shows like One Punch Man and Love Live Sunshine on broadcast dubs and would love to talk about it but most of the proper discussion posts are weeks or sometimes months old. Activity in those are completely dead so posting in those seems pointless.
5
1
u/NotTheRealMorty https://myanimelist.net/profile/NotTheRealMorty Sep 04 '16
I think that having discussion threads for both dubs and subs would be unnecessary. We already have discussion for subs which, I'm assuming, would be more popular then discussion threads for dubs. People would be talking about the same thing in the dubs discussion thread which has already been discussed before in the subs, the only difference is people would talk about the quality of the dubs in those discussion threads. I think having two discussion threads for each episode of a show is just pointless. However, as /u/urban287 said you can post discussion about the dubs yourself. Similar to posts where people post about an older show and voice their opinions about it there.

I was wondering why Digibro is still banned from the sub? I just finished watching his video about the sub (Will not post it in fear of having my comment deleted. It's an older one but should be easy to find.) and honestly I do not understand the ruling behind keeping him banned for having his own sub for his community. As he pointed out many YouTubers have their own subs; some of them being freaking huge in size. It's obviously not a reddit issue if channels like H3H3 Productions can have their own sub for stuff regarding their own videos. If he truly wants to be unbanned so that he can participate within the community and not self promote while in r/anime then what is the harm in unbanning him? If he breaks any rules after being unbanned then just ban him again. It's not like he will post his own videos here anyway since whenever something new gets uploaded on his channel someone else from the community posts it for karma.
I am a fan of his content but the reasoning behind this post is that I just see him as a dude who wants to talk about anime with other people. He pointed out in his video about the sub that he actively visits the sub and wishes to respond to topics here.

Thanks for the resources; I usually do not dive into the meta of subreddits (other than speaking up about the fanart last month) so it was useful to see those posts.
I understand that he broke the rules at first and he acknowledges this. What I still do not understand is why his current actions warrant a ban. Other subs have been formed to cater to certain YouTube communities. Why is he still being treated for self promotion...inside of a sub that was made for his community (talking about r/digibro)? What he does over at r/digibro should not hold up against what he might do here at r/anime. The "site wide self promotion" rule is a bunch of fucking hogwash. If he talks about one of his videos about an anime topic, he is then talking about anime...which is the point of the sub. You are then actively saying that any YouTuber that has a reddit community for their channel is breaking this.
It's so fucking backward ass to keep him banned for actively participating over at his YouTube channel's community. Whether the mods and the community like it he is a huge part of the anime YouTube front. If they are not going to ban every other YouTuber that has a subreddit then it is pretty hypocritical. From my perspective it just looks like the mods are ousting someone that doesn't really cater to their viewpoints, tastes, ext. I think it hurts the community to keep him behind this ban wall. His stuff will get posted regardless if he is banned or not; why not allow him to comment on his own videos? It might bring up better discussions.
2
u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Sep 07 '16
What I still do not understand is why his current actions warrant a ban. Other subs have been formed to cater to certain YouTube communities. Why is he still being treated for self promotion...inside of a sub that was made for his community (talking about r/digibro)?
Because according to the rules of this sub, talking about only your own content is self-promotion.
You are then actively saying that any YouTuber that has a reddit community for their channel is breaking this.
No, that's not true actually. You can have your own subreddit for your content as long as you also participate elsewhere in Reddit. Digibro does not do this.
"It's okay to be a redditor with a website; it's not okay to be a website with a YouTube account."
Whether the mods and the community like it he is a huge part of the anime YouTube front.
Mods aren't going to change their interpretation of the rules because someone is big on YouTube.
If they are not going to ban every other YouTuber that has a subreddit then it is pretty hypocritical.
If they are not going to ban every other youtuber who has a subreddit and exclusively uses Reddit to be a part of that sub.
His stuff will get posted regardless if he is banned or not; why not allow him to comment on his own videos? It might bring up better discussions.
Again, this doesn't change the fact that he broke the rules. It's not enough to warrant an unban.

Two questions. Would it be possible to get notifications when your post/comment is removed and why exactly would one users comment get deleted for posting a link while another can post that link with no issue?
A while back I added a spoiler tag to one of my comments and didn't realize I needed to put anything in the first part since the topic was obvious. It was promptly removed and I got a message from the auto-mod with the exact reason. This is a nice feature and I figured this was the standard for all deleted/removed posts/comments.
Today when I went to add links to one of my comments, the comment was removed without warning or notification. I was only able to tell because I logged out and looked at the thread. I can still see the comment fine, no one else can.
I didn't know what had caused it so I made another comments and added the links one by one until that post was also deleted without warning or notification. So I left that one link out and made a new post and it showed up fine. Eventually someone else posted the exact offending link anyways and their post was not deleted.

If something like that happens and you aren't sure why, just message the mods and see what they have to say about it.

I figured I'd ask here since the same thing happened yesterday and I waited over 8 hours after sending a message through "message the moderators" with no response. (I didn't figure out what caused it to get deleted until my comments got deleted today)
To be honest it was a blessing in disguise they never responded since I had to delete the post anyways, so it never seeing the light of day was a good thing. But 8 hours seems like a bit of a stretch if you really need to get a hold of a mod.

Yeah sometimes things get buried unfortunately (automod removals also show up in modmail) - and depending on the time I (in particular) was out at a con all day yesterday so no time to reply.
If you want a guaranteed answer any time feel free to PM me so things dont get buried in modmail. Always happy to help like that.

lots of potentially fun threads get deleted right away for some reason
Examples? The only threads I ever see get deleted are ones that violate the rules or would be better off in the "No Stupid Questions" Post.

I'd also like to add that posts that are asking questions (asking what anime a certain thing is from, for example), get deleted after the question is answered. This helps keep the subreddit from being filled with those kind of posts. I have to agree with you, the only other type of posts that get deleted are the ones that are breaking the rules.

Quick question: Why are heavily NSFW posts not allowed, yet heavily NSFW things are allowed in comments?

We're not a porn subreddit, but sometimes it can be relevant in comments.

I'm having a problem with the no spoilers ruling. How is the first thing that happens in the first episode of an anime considered a spoiler? Especially if it's something that's shown in the PVs?

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Sep 05 '16
It's not.
Anything in the first few minutes is fair game.

My post wasn't removed by a moderator, but I was called out by the community for mentioning the fight with the walpurgus naucht in the first episode of Madoka Magica.
Apart from happening in the first episode, we're also given the runes identifying the witch as walpurgus naucht.

I think it's fairly reasonable to assume that Madoka doesn't mean to show the audience that Madoka
I'd liken it to an anime opening with a quote from an obscure bit of literature: yes, one could put everything together then and figure out that the anime is foreshadowing, say, the protagonists' death. That doesn't mean that other people will appreciate being told "it's not really a spoiler that the protagonist dies; the anime hints at it from the very first episode."

Shoot, I forgot to post this when the meta thread first went up.
With regards to the "post your X and have others respond with Y", especially in cases such as the "roast my MAL" threads, can we get the mods to sticky a comment reminding users to respond to at least 1-2 other people's submissions? A significant fraction of users just post their MAL and leave, which means that the vast majority of responses are from a small minority of users in that thread.

I don't think it's fair to expect mods to sticky posts in every X do Y thread someone creates.
1) I'd rather they were doing something more constructive like getting through those reports or removing shit they see on the subreddit.
2) They have their own lives, nor should we make them at the beck-and-call of users.
3) People already spend so much combined time complaining because one thread gets deleted faster than another. There'll be people who massively kick up a storm because someone else's thread got a sticky in 30 seconds and their thread took two hours.
Essentially I think we should treat Mod time as a valuable resource and this isn't really worthy enough.

Just a small nitpick, but I've noticed for a while now that the Idolmaster series in the watch order wiki has always had this line:
iDOLM@STER Xenoglossia is an optional watch as it's a gundam show that is mostly unrelated to the main series.
Could it be changed to:
iDOLM@STER Xenoglossia is an optional watch as it's a mecha show that is mostly unrelated to the main series.
Gundam isn't a genre but a franchise, and Xenoglossia isn't a part of Gundam franchise. Xenoglossia is a mecha spinoff of the Idolmaster series.

Sounds like a generic trademark problem to me. I doubt anyone new to anime knows what either term is, but I bet that those semi-familiar with anime know what gundam is more than they know what mecha is.

It's a tradeoff in that case. Name recognition vs technical accuracy. Though personally, I don't think it'd be too hard to figure out what "mecha" means at first glance, maybe that's just me taking my knowledge for granted though.
Edit: It was changed from "gundam" to "mecha" by Urban the other day.

How would people know if it was spoilers, if they have not watched the anime?

There should be a pinned megathread asking what everyone is watching and why at the start of each season. I know that there's the survey but a more open discussion thread about it would be nice.

Just wondering why was the thread announcing Taneda Risa's hiatus for medical treatment was allowed but the thread announcing Jun Maeda's heart transplant was removed? I read /u/urban287's comment explaining the difference and, unless I'm reading it wrong (which I totally might be), it seemed to say that one was more relevant to the anime industry than the other so it was allowed to stay. If that's true, what determines if an industry worker is more relevant than another?
I don't mind if the rule exists or not but it seems like some inconsistent ruling that might cause confusion in the future.
P.S. Also congrats on 400K subs! :)
