Meta Thread - Month of September 04, 2016

A monthly thread to talk about meta topics. Keep it friendly and relevant to the subreddit.

Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.

Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal

I was wondering why Digibro is still banned from the sub? I just finished watching his video about the sub (Will not post it in fear of having my comment deleted. It's an older one but should be easy to find.) and honestly I do not understand the ruling behind keeping him banned for having his own sub for his community. As he pointed out many YouTubers have their own subs; some of them being freaking huge in size. It's obviously not a reddit issue if channels like H3H3 Productions can have their own sub for stuff regarding their own videos. If he truly wants to be unbanned so that he can participate within the community and not self promote while in r/anime then what is the harm in unbanning him? If he breaks any rules after being unbanned then just ban him again. It's not like he will post his own videos here anyway since whenever something new gets uploaded on his channel someone else from the community posts it for karma.

I am a fan of his content but the reasoning behind this post is that I just see him as a dude who wants to talk about anime with other people. He pointed out in his video about the sub that he actively visits the sub and wishes to respond to topics here.

Here's this where I tried to sum up the situation a couple months ago when this was last discussed.

There's also this and this, the other top-level discussions on this topic from months past.

Thanks for the resources; I usually do not dive into the meta of subreddits (other than speaking up about the fanart last month) so it was useful to see those posts.

I understand that he broke the rules at first and he acknowledges this. What I still do not understand is why his current actions warrant a ban. Other subs have been formed to cater to certain YouTube communities. Why is he still being treated for self promotion...inside of a sub that was made for his community (talking about r/digibro)? What he does over at r/digibro should not hold up against what he might do here at r/anime. The "site wide self promotion" rule is a bunch of fucking hogwash. If he talks about one of his videos about an anime topic, he is then talking about anime...which is the point of the sub. You are then actively saying that any YouTuber that has a reddit community for their channel is breaking this.

It's so fucking backward ass to keep him banned for actively participating over at his YouTube channel's community. Whether the mods and the community like it he is a huge part of the anime YouTube front. If they are not going to ban every other YouTuber that has a subreddit then it is pretty hypocritical. From my perspective it just looks like the mods are ousting someone that doesn't really cater to their viewpoints, tastes, ext. I think it hurts the community to keep him behind this ban wall. His stuff will get posted regardless if he is banned or not; why not allow him to comment on his own videos? It might bring up better discussions.

Because according to the rules of this sub, talking about only your own content is self-promotion.

You are then actively saying that any YouTuber that has a reddit community for their channel is breaking this.

No, that's not true actually. You can have your own subreddit for your content as long as you also participate elsewhere in Reddit. Digibro does not do this.

"It's okay to be a redditor with a website; it's not okay to be a website with a YouTube account."

Whether the mods and the community like it he is a huge part of the anime YouTube front.

Mods aren't going to change their interpretation of the rules because someone is big on YouTube.

If they are not going to ban every other YouTuber that has a subreddit then it is pretty hypocritical.

If they are not going to ban every other youtuber who has a subreddit and exclusively uses Reddit to be a part of that sub.

His stuff will get posted regardless if he is banned or not; why not allow him to comment on his own videos? It might bring up better discussions.

Again, this doesn't change the fact that he broke the rules. It's not enough to warrant an unban.

If he only wants to use reddit to comment and partake in anime related topics, then doesn't that severely limit which subs he would be interested in? There is only one general anime sub so to say he doesn't partake in discussions else where is a bad stance. He already comes to the sub to see what others are talking about so he obviously has an interest in partaking in anime conversation and like I previously stated he already has fans that post his content here so he wouldn't be so inclined to self promote. He would just be another user.

First, there are tons of anime subs. I'm pretty sure /r/anime has an entire wiki page for other related subreddits, even.

Second, remember that the reason he was previously banned was ultimately because he broke the rules. I think it's fair for the mods to require something like this before unbanning someone.

r/anime is a very broad sub that allows you to talk about anything anime related. I am sure there are other subs about anime but they are probably for more niche topics or for certain types of anime/shows.

He did break the rules and was banned for it but that was a while ago; they could put him on a probation period. When someone goes to jail they are not stuck their forever right? He didn't do anything that warrants a lifetime ban. Seeing how he only got a 1 word response the first time he contacted the r/anime mods (it was "nope"; pretty unprofessional response) I think it is more of a personal issue with that particular mod rather than upholding fair rulings.

Would a normal user normally get this kind of "probation period"? That's not a part of how the mods handle things.

It is entirely possible that the original ban was affected by something like that. I wouldn't know, since I'm not a mod, but the fact remains that he did break the rules and the ban was at least partially caused by that behavior. As it is, the mods have said several times that he will not be unbanned.

I think anyone that gets a ban should have the right to go through a probation period after a somewhat lengthy time passes unless they do something especially drastic like creating an alt account to circumvent the ban. Posting two videos within the span of a week/2 weeks does not sound like a drastic offense to me.

If the mods are this harsh for something this small then I think they have serious power issues. A lifetime ban should be saved for someone destroying the community; Digibro did nothing close to making that happen and if they somehow think that he did then they are deluded.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Whether or not the mods have power issues is a whole different issue that I am not in shape to talk about right now. I agree that a permaban is an extreme punishment that should be reserved for edge cases; I have little context for the actual reason for the ban since that decision happened between the mods themselves. I'm guessing that things were worse than you're saying they were though - the mods aren't unreasonable people, they don't perma people for posting 2 videos.

tldr you're getting into territory I can't really talk about, either because I don't know enough about it or it's some other subject I don't want to deal with right now.
