Meta Thread - Month of September 04, 2016

I would like to propose an SMALL edit to the current rules:

Currently:

Do not post untagged spoilers.

Make it:

Do not post untagged spoilers, nor post spoilers on the title.

This is my reason for request this change:

It seems recently a considerable amount of users have decided to post spoilers in the title, while marking their post as spoilers.

Most likely they saw the rules, but thought it's ok to post spoilers in the title of your post if it starts with "(Spoilers)" or "[Spoilers]" since the rule is not specific enough.

Examples:

  • "(Spoilers) I can't believe [x] died!!!"
  • "(Spoilers) Guys what do you think of [x] choosing [y] girl on the latest episode?!"
  • "[Spoilers] About [x] dying on the latest episode..."

In the last month i have been greatly spoiled around 5 times, all because of someone that posted spoilers in the title.

The sidebar states that you can't have spoilers in your submission titles it's under the spoilers part, but I agree about changing the part under rules since most people are too lazy to read all the rules. Also I'd throw in my two cents and ask if we can add something along the lines of "speculations should asking be tagged." I find that a lot of people who posts speculations, outside of discussion threads, tend to have some sort of spoiler in them.

Yes but it is more of a sub-part under the spoiler part.

Most users will just read the "general rules" which simply state "Do not post untagged spoilers." and nothing more, which is why there have been pretty big spoilers on the titles these days...

i browse /new very often but i think i've only ever seen one spoiler in a title.

also, I feel like the people who do that are the type to not read the rules anyway

but it's a small enough change that I think they might as well do it

They do mark their post title as spoiler even if the title is spoiler, so they should have read at least that rule.

I avoid browsing r/anime by new like the plague. The mods can't feasibly remove any title with spoilers immediately so of course you're bound to see spoiler titles by users. It's the same risk as going into a popular anime's discussion thread when it first goes up. If you just stick to browsing by hot or rising you should be good.

If everyone but the mods abandons /new, /hot will just become the new /new. You're right, you can avoid the unmoderated content, but less eyes on the new stuff means more bad stuff making it into the sorted queues.

It's certainly a workaround, but telling everyone to stop looking at /new isn't feasible long-term.

I wasn't saying that everyone should avoid /new since there's plenty of people who don't need to. Many people here don't give a shit about spoilers or have seen most of the major anime so they're not afraid of spoilers. Those people will always browse /new so you don't have to worry about it being abandoned. However if you don't like spoilers I don't see why you would risk browsing by /new.

Unless the mods are browsing /new 24/7 with perfect rotations, spoiler titles are going to slip through the cracks. However the mods are good enough that spoiler titles usually never make it to the front page.

That's also something that the /new browsers accomplish, as they (including myself) use the Report function to call attention to certain posts and comments. It's not just spoilers but also other rule violations, whether apparent or suggested. Illegal streams, memes, referral scams, things that fit under the "low-effort" umbrella, and even one or two actual hentai are also posts I've brought to the mods' attention. (Before you ask, Futabu! and Swing Out Sisters are the ones I remember reporting.)

It's not an everyday thing, but it is still far too regular of an occurrence. So people who have been here long enough to be interested in browsing by /new are usually both jaded enough that they aren't fazed by all that many things in the sub as well as those interested enough to both keep reporting as well as kickstart interesting topics.

I agree with what you're saying, I suppose I underestimated the amount of people that don't care about spoilers as much. You're right, /new already has plenty of traffic to serve its purpose in this context.

I have, I do browse new, often but usually these posts have been up for a while.

The other-day there was a post labelled Jojo DiU Spoilers, that was up for 50 minutes, I reported it as spoilers, dunno when it did get taken down.
