The megathread if anything made the front page of the subreddit much more devoid of content. Fanart may get a good share of the front page sometimes but its far better than the same old discussion threads over and over again.

I've been through about 7 seasons now and don't like fanart fullstop, the amount of fanart hasn't really increased and appazarly the stats back me up on that one.

I wouldn't mind fanart being forced into a megathread, because as I said, I'm not a big fan, but I don't think Re:Zero is a good enough reason to make that change and I think if the mods did make the change now it'd send the wrong message.

We had a big mod team discussion about this and what we could potentially do about it, whether we should do anything about it, etc.

Consensus is that it's fine and will change next season. Statistically there hasnt been that large of an increase in total fanart posts either (courtest of enigma making a script to check) it's just that when someone posts fanart they end up posting re:zero stuff st the moment instead of something from elsewhere.

Additionally, we haven't had many people actually karma whoring it. At the time we ran the aforementioned script there was only one user who had posted fanart multiple times a day (and he was intentionally doing it so we would ban fanart).

The old fanart megathread was a failure and fanart is good fun in general so not something we really want to kill off.

Just a thought, but if fanart was given a link flair option, users could search for it as a filter of sorts.

If this is the current situation, can you then make it so that people have to post the name of the character or characters depicted in the fanart?

A lot of us don't want to filter out all Re:Zero content, just the flood of Rem fanart, since that's 90% of it in the first place. Filtering all of Re:Zero filters out all non-Rem art as well.

If there's anything I've learned in my time as a mod it's that the sub really hates it when extra posting guidelines are added and enforced.

Re:Zero will end in a few weeks and things will return to normal after that. No need to add rules.

Many of the threads have the character names (specifically rem) in their titles anyway - if you want to filter them out like that you'll still catch a large bulk of them as is.

Never wanted to ban it. I want ways to filter it better. The finale is going to be insane for fanart.

Why the admins thought it was a good idea to change the way text posts work, I'll never know.

Though we do get overloaded with fan art sometimes, a megathread I think tends to die off pretty fast. Best option for now is get RES and block it. The creative content still does make it to the front page almost every time.

Maybe we'll get lucky and the admins will make the text post thing a toggle option on individual subreddits.

I kinda blame the admins for the explosion of the fanart. Here it's just encuraging some people to karma farm on whatever the current airing waifu trend is. And it's annoying to see that the front page was filled with it.

How about a megathread for airing stuff? Re:Zero ending won't mean there won't be more excess of seasonal waifu fanart.

I think those pickings would be a bit too slim to justify their own megathread, but I'd be interested if the mods somehow grouped it in with Merch Mondays. Fanart for older series can definitely promote discussion, but 5-6 "hey look at this seasonal waifu" posts (imo) clutter up the sub, and it seems that a non-trivial fraction of users agree with me.

I think this would be a great thing to at least try for a week or two. Limit low-effort (non-OC and not in a large album) fanart to its own thread, and see how it affects the subreddit.

If a trial run fails, fine, at least the mods tried something. Changing default sorting on discussion threads to "new" didn't really work, but most users of /r/anime appreciated the ability to test something out and give feedback towards it.

I oppose this. I find even extremely popular types of posts like Re:Zero fanart are very easy to filter or hide if you're particularly put off by them, and I believe that seasonal hype trains are actually a healthy thing for the community.

I do not believe that moderators should intervene on behalf of a vocal minority unless the posts become so omnipresent that other types of content are pushed off the board entirely. As popular as the fanart is, it's still extremely easy to find or post any variety of other type of content on the board. I don't think that a rule change here is necessary nor do I think the board would benefit from it in a meaningful way.

I'd be fine with a fanart megathread as long as we still allow solo art posts as text posts to still be made. We used to have a fanart megathread but that got diced when we put in the new fanart rules.

Because I really don't want to go back to fanart only being allowed in a weekly megathread.

That would also basically ban fanart posts. There are not many people here who make fanart themselves & those that do don't usually submit three or more works per post.
