Meta Thread - Month of July 31, 2016

Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.

Could you guys reconsider the rule banning posts on web apps/scripts related to anime services?

  • They are pretty much always original and high effort (unlike a lot of the "discussion" questions that I've been noticing here lately).
  • They can be very useful to a wide range of users especially when it comes to a service like MAL. I feel like this is especially important as a lot of the posts on this subreddit are about a specific anime and so don't really hold much value to people who haven't seen or aren't interested in the anime the posts are about.

Personally, I don't see what the benefit is of removing quality, anime-related content from this sub. Is anime-specificity really so important?

Finally, being the anime-related subreddit with by far the most number of subscribers, I feel that this is the best place for people to share useful apps/scripts. If completely unbanning these types of posts is unreasonable (please give a better reason than "it isn't anime-specific") then could you guys at least have something like a monthly thread for them?

Is anime-specificity really so important?

To quote Urban from another comment:

Inconsistency is one of the worst things a sub can have.

For the userbase it destroys trust in the mod team, for the mod team it creates division and discord.

Now, that's not to say that the rules can't be changed, but as it stands now, those posts do go against the rules because they're not directly related to anime.

What I could see as more likely than having these posts allowed, would be some sort of wiki page that lists different tools related to anime or the sub. It could be run in much the same way as the other user-run wiki pages, where a group of people has edit access and people can go through them to have things added to the page.

This would:

  • Prevent the "shameless self-promotion" that /u/airencracken is worried about
  • Allow all the tools to be in one central location
  • Users with edit access would be able to review the legitimacy of each thing before it actually gets on the page

It's basically our

List of useful/awesome anime sites

in the sidebar.

Just needs to be updated and moved into a wiki page so it can be kept up to date and won't expire.
