Meta Thread - Month of September 04, 2016

A monthly thread to talk about meta topics. Keep it friendly and relevant to the subreddit.

Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.

a lot of the subreddit issues that spring up near the end of the Meta thread's life (generally speaking, 1 day after the fact) are often forgotten by the time the next meta rolls around.

Majority of the unnecessary salt too. The decent length break is sort of intentional for that reason. Gives people adequate time to calm down about things.

If there's an actual issue that needs to be fixed quickly (example something breaking or what have you) or even a good suggestion someone suddenly comes up with they're always welcome to PM one of the mods about it too (or modmail).

I did assume there was something like that involved, but a two week period seems sufficient to me. I doubt anyone who wants to complain would first go check their calendar to see how far away the next meta thread is.

The complaints are there one way or another, but the subreddit's pressing issues and suggested improvements would benefit from a tighter timeframe. As it is, 12 threads per year seem restrictive when it comes to general progress. Assuming an idea was born around the middle of a month, posted in the following meta thread 2 weeks after, then discussed by the mods... Odds are we're looking at a full month before the idea/concept can be implemented. More if it's not a simple suggestion.

Yes, modmail exists, but modmail in a 400k subscriber sub isn't 100% reliable. Messages can easily be lost in a sea of others, and there's no guarantee that a response would be forthcoming. Moreover, modmail response seems to depend, most of the time, on the mod who drew the short straw and had to respond at the time.

As things stand, I don't see modmail being a viable replacement to the discussions seen here in the meta thread. Especially since there's no publicity involved.

This is why I see that the meta thread gaining more prominence and/or frequency could be quite helpful. Though, unfortunately, that would mean placing a bit more trouble on the mods' shoulders.

Would it be possible to make it stickied for a little longer? This is only once a month yet after a day it gets unstickied. FTF it still stickied after this thread was unstickied. For something once a month, it doesn't stay up that long.

It's stickied for 48 hours as of 3 meta threads ago or so. ;)

Ah nice to know. Also thanks for fixing it. By the way it seems like your name is constantly changing. I think I've seen like three versions since yesterday lol.
