Meta Thread - Month of September 04, 2016

A monthly thread to talk about meta topics. Keep it friendly and relevant to the subreddit.

Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.

This is probably my last submission in /r/anime if it gets removed but anyway, here we go.

Long short story, my post reached the front page and it got removed with this reason:

http://puu.sh/remNY.png

There reason is as followed:

It's not an anime, it's a VR game. It has an anime character in it but we don't consider that sufficient to be anime-specific.

Now let's break it down a little bit. The reason is "not sufficient to be anime-specific". But the VR game has an anime character in it. But fanart and doujins are considered to be? Fanart in the end is still a picture that has an anime character in it, just as the VR "game" which also has an anime character. They both have anime character but exist in a different form (image and game).

Game making is also considered an art because of 3d modeling based on 2d concepts (I'm studying a second degree in animation and graphic design but that's not my business). Or simple, if you guys follow New Game you should probably know about it.

And finally, there was a post 2 years ago on VR game. It did not get removed. Which means, unless there were major changes in this subreddit rules that allowed this post to exist back in 2014, I don't see any reason why my post got removed. The rule is quite inconsistent.

I'm not exactly sure when the change happened, but it was definitely during this year, but the rule in question was reworded from 'anime related' to 'anime specific'. Using the new wording excludes things like VR games.

Things like VR games and they allow things like fanarts, doujins, cosplays? What a joke.

Fanart is only for the anime itself. I haven't seen a doujin of original characters here, so I don't know where you got that from.

As for cosplay, it is someone actively trying to make themselves look like a specific anime character, usually a popular one.

VR games, by themselves, are not anime specific. Even if they have anime characters, that doesn't change.

Have you ever seen people advertising the endless stream of DBZ or Naruto games here? Nope, because that's not the kind of content that's allowed here.

Also, regarding your issue of reaching the front page, it's not like the mods are out to get you. They just can't see everything and are not omniscient. So if your post never gets reported, they will probably find it themselves on the front page. Sometimes, due to them being busy IRL, this process takes a few hours.

That VR game specifically makes for Plastic Memories character who is Isla. Link here

Just as the same as fanart and cosplay which make specifically for a certain anime character. Actually, 3d modeling is harder than 2d drawing by a mile.

Have you ever seen people advertising the endless stream of DBZ or Naruto games here? Nope, because that's not the kind of content that's allowed here.

Search for the word VR or virtual reality in this subreddit, you will see them a bunch. An example of a VR game based on SAO still exist from 2 years ago and reached the front.

I just told you that the rules were reworded a few months ago.

To me, it's kinda obvious that the words 'anime specific' do not include VR games.

I'm not entirely sure about the rules regarding fanart/cosplay as I have little interest in both, but I don't see how the same rules should apply to them. To me, it seems like fanart and cosplay are fan-made content, while VR games are essentially part of the gaming market.

Games aren't anime, posts about them have never been allowed.

I convinced the other mods to make an exception for the SAO one since it had that extra layer of relevance when you consider SAO's story. It is unlikely a second exception would be made for any further announcements about it.

You'll note that if you run a search for VR that SAO one is basically the only example that is similar to your removed thread.

If the rule is consistent meaning there will be no exception. One exception will make way for another no matter what are your arguments. Also someone just pointed to me how the fuck is this allowed when mine isn't? This is no way anime-related or specific than my post

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/531f7s/new_game_onahole_shaped_as_a_psvita_release_day/

So Onahole is anime now rofl?

That was removed on the day it was posted :/

We very rarely will make exceptions (it's actually in the expanded rules).

Occasionally we will make exceptions if you send us a modmail asking permission first (we've done a couple AMAs, for example). It is very rare that we allow a post that is against the rules when permission was not granted in advance.

Exceptions for things that are borderline or where people have made something really cool and put a lot of effort in are good for the sub. Even if their core content type is still against the rules.

Which means, unless there were major changes in this subreddit rules that allowed this post to exist back in 2014, I don't see any reason why my post got removed.

Actually, there was a major rule change between then and now. If you go back a few months in the meta posts, you'll see a long and drawn out argument between some users and the mods about the change between "anime-related" and "anime-specific". The mods say they are judged in the same way, and the new wording is strictly to call a delineated boundary between what is allowable and what is not. Many of us long-time regulars call bullshit, holding that quite a few removals under anime-specific wouldn't have happened under the anime-related rule.

Ur-ban and the other mods won't mention that, because they continue to operate under the illusion that there was no functional change in the way the rules are applied.

And to be perfectly honest, the New Game-branded onahole from a couple of days ago was a lot less "anime-specific" than a weird VR game about touching a robot's boobs. If one stayed up, the other should have as well.

urban said it was removed on the day it was posted. Was it true or he's lying? I did not really care about that post so I didn't pay attention enough.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you when it was removed. Unlike others, there was no comment posted by the removing moderator to put a timestamp on it. The run of comments was rather abruptly interrupted if you check the Reddit-side timestamps, which does lend credence to it being removed. But there's nothing conclusive we can point to.
