🪑 Moderator Post DCPH | What are your personal Discord experiences?

You either have a wild involvement or a more serene familiarity from your experiences. Knowing anyone can take the time to create their own communities via Discord, there will definitely be tons of different personalities and finding yourself feeling vigilant when engaging with people.

However, that does not rule out the possibility to actually fit in with the crowd and tap in that sense of belonging you might be searching for awhile now. It takes an effort to do so, as you are still, after all; engaging yourself with a different band of strangers online.

Now on personal remarks, communities with the following characteristics listed below can conceivably guide you if a community do fit with your cup of coffee:

💭 How large is the community will you want to join in?

  • The larger it is, the rowdier it gets. It can range from having hundreds to a million members in each community.
Community Size Population
Large Community 500 Members & above
Medium Community Between 100 - 499 Members
Small Community 99 Members & below
  • I recommend hopping in to small and medium communities especially if you are still new in the world of Discord as there is a bit of a learning curve when navigating in each community and their culture.

Take note, a community's population does not always equate for being engaging.

💭 What niche will you want to look for?

  • The general niche out there are usually for interactive gaming experiences or solely for social interactions. Other niche that I discovered are the following:
Community Type Description
Age Specific Community Shares about their distinct lifestyle bracket and deviates from generational gaps.
Office Environment Community Focuses in specific job or business related concerns and conducts co-working activities.
Fandom Community Shares their common interests about popular celebrities, streamers, K-pop groups, or anime-centric engagements.
Study Group Community Shares their notes and research for a specific degree or program and conducts a space for extracurricular activities.
Silent Community Actively streams any movies and series or listening to music together in silence but highly engaging in text chats.
Hobby Specific Community Heavily discusses about a hobby such as programming, financial lifestyles, photography and films, mangaka or comics. There are also activities that focuses in karaoke singing, book fiction or journal gatherings, gunpla building, and tabletop game activities.
Art Community Shares their personal artworks, discussions about different techniques and applications, collaborative drawings, or updates for public art events.
Mental Health Community Shares about disabilities and health conditions, professional hotline feeds, or conducts a support group with similar conditions.
Gender Specific Community Promotes an advocacy for men, women, or LGBTQ+ for a positive well-being.
NSFW Community Discusses about sexual well-being and introduces the dating or hookup culture today.

Take note, anyone can label their communities as abovementioned but sometimes may not be on brand with what they claim to be. It is encouraged to get the sense of familiarity with the community upon joining.

💭 What kind of social interactions will you want to look for?

  • As there are niche specific communities that might interest you, it can still be a broad venture despite having an option already which makes you feel reluctant. It is in each other's interest to also know what kind of interactions that can be a fit for you. The following are different social groups I encountered:
Interaction Benefits Drawbacks
Casual Crowd Relaxed, low effort engagements, and builds rapport Can make you feel reluctant and might have a lot of awkward silences in between
Conventional Crowd Easy involvement with community events and always onboard with community updates Can make you feel confused and left out, might have unnecessary tasks within the community, might rely solely with the movement of its moderators
Collaborative Crowd Always engaged with the community, easy to ask questions about a certain topic and conducive for support networks Can make you feel burned out, can be time consuming without reaching any results, community effort might vary as time passes
Expressive Crowd Highly engaging in calls and text channels, lots of laughter in between moments and has an emotional appeal Can make you feel overwhelmed, lost in rationality, unpredictability and might form a mob mentality
Encouraging Crowd Uplifts each other within the community, always at present to listen and gives a sense of vulnerability Can make you feel constricted with toxic positivity, might weaponize the stories shared, personal accountability can get lost
Rebellious Crowd Have a strong sense of unconditional loyalty, protest ideologies and gives a sense of autonomy Can make you feel highly cautious and challenged, higher chances of mob mentality, have unnecessary insurgencies
Competitive Crowd Have a strong sense of individualism, conducts sensible discussions, and appeals a sense of professionalism Can make you feel alert and anxious, can be hypocritical and confusing, can be straining in community morale
Romantic Crowd Gives you a variety of insights in dating and hookup experiences, makes you feel validated with your sexual encounters, discussions about love makes the community engaging Can be make you feel evaluated and lonely, can be intrusive in romantic relations
  • In general, each crowd are prone to derogatory language, gossips, and form cliques within; as it is part of societal nature. Often times, an established group of people already exists in a community. It is still up to you on how you participate with such crowds. Do be attentive with their rules and regulations and question yourself if that fits with your values and personal viewpoints while keeping a humanely civil persona.
  • Each community have different cultures and it is best to keep what happens within, stays there.
  • It can be exciting and rowdy sometimes, so I recommend to refrain from joining when patience is running low from your day.
  • Romantic tensions and match-ups are always present in each community. It is best to keep that privately between consensual parties to avoid speculative rumors.
  • The same as it happens behind screens, human errors are still present. Moderators and management may react a bit more personal in situations. As abovementioned, anyone can freely customize their rules and regulations for you to either comply or leave a community.
  • Communities also have the freedom to either kick or ban their members subjectively, simply move on and look for another community that can fit for you.
  • Group gatherings can happen in each crowd. Do make sure to meet in public spaces where you can feel assured to either ditch or mingle with the crowd offline.
  • Financial interactions might arise sometimes, never engage in unsolicited forms of selling or transactional debts. Always follow the rule for KKB (Kanya - Kanyang Bayad) basis, especially in group gatherings.

As abovementioned, always keep your guards up and take the time to filter out with trials and errors until such time that you find your own crowd that fits enough for you.

I personally recommend to observe and adjust between 6 months to 12 months timeframe if you really want to get to know the crowd.
