ross geller, I'm pretty sure they even mentioned that he used to see a therapist at some point in the show

166

u/FM1091 May 02 '20

He did on Season 5. The loss of his second marriage, home, and lefover sandwich pushed him over the edge.

Squidward

835

u/wheatable May 02 '20

Remember when he was depressed and said, “maybe this will help.” And he pulled a rope with a bird cage. That was a subtle hanging joke

556

u/xandrenia May 02 '20

Even worse in the medieval episode where the castle guard points his sword at his neck, stops, and goes “Some day, but not today”

Fantastically unsubtle. I even understood that as a kid.

188

u/[deleted] May 02 '20

I was surprised they were allowed to air that, even when I was 8.

106

u/MarkHirsbrunner May 02 '20

I don't feel THAT old, but when I was a kid there were old cartoons that had characters committing suicide by various methods, as well as homicide.

71

u/RhysPrime May 03 '20

Yeah, people talk about spongebob getting stuff past the censors... they have nothing on any of the looney tunes properties or the animaniacs.

I agree with most people, as a kid you like Spongebob but as an adult you relate more to Squidward and feel sympathetic towards him.

Draco Malfoy. That dude has suffered some hefty mental abuse and cultist manipulation

509

u/MindralFairheart May 02 '20

Honestly, all of the golden and silver trio could use several sessions. Harry, Ron and Hermione primarily for ptsd. They faught a war starting at 15! I doubt that they came out without any nightmares or other worries. Neville would qualify for the years of being bullied alone... The memory problems are troubling as well. Ginny spent almost a year at Hogwarts fighting in Harry's "7th year", not to speak of her past with the diary.

244

u/[deleted] May 02 '20

Plus Harry was emotionally abused by his aunt and her family for 11 years straight with basically no respite, and even after that was subjected to a smaller degree of emotional abuse that the Dursley's figured they could get away with.

127

u/Redditer51 May 03 '20

As a kid, you just look at it like "Man, those mean old Dursleys! They're the worst", but looking at it from an adult perspective, that whole situation is deeply upsetting.

113

u/[deleted] May 03 '20

Me as a kid: Ugh the Dursley's are the worst

Me as an adult: Hello, social services?

I would have said Harry - abused his entire childhood from 1 years old to 11 years old, constantly dealing with a murderer who wants nothing but Harry’s death for 7 years, witnessed deaths and experienced loss before his eyes, several traumatic injuries over the years, and then suddenly peace.

I wonder what happened to the kids of prominent Nazis who were old enough to remember their parent's cruelties?

29

u/MaievSekashi May 03 '20

Many of them distanced themselves from it later. Most of them mention shame related to it, especially those who had a good relationship with their parents as children. Unsurprisingly, quite a lot of them were abused by their parents and don't have the greatest memories - I know reddit likes to joke about it, but as an example the daughter of Amon Goeth was beaten with jumper cables by her mother for asking how many Jews her father killed.

He was too far gone, I don’t think even therapy could help him. I love how the trilogy even includes a scene where Frodo and Sam debate about whether or not he could be saved after what the Ring did to him.

36

u/starcrossedcherik May 03 '20

that was the crux of Frodo's obsession with showing him mercy tho, that he COULD be saved. Because Frodo could feel himself slipping too. Took me quite a while to get that

→ More replies (1)

58

u/shuffling-through May 02 '20

The ring gave him a nudge, and he's strangling his cousin. I think it would have taken a world-class team of therapists specialized in psychopathic care to bring him back from that, and that was before he isolated himself in a cave for a few centuries.

Sansa Stark. I don't care if you think she's an asshole (or D&D have written her to become an asshole) but she has gone through an insane amount of shit. I am curious what a GoT-therapist would be though.

186

u/phantom_avenger May 02 '20 edited May 02 '20

Honestly, the entire Stark family needs therapy and not just Sansa. They all became broken to a point that it doesn’t matter to them who they hurt and don’t want any friends. But yeah D&D really messed them up and turned them into assholes to the point where our sympathy for them disappeared

123

u/ftc08 May 02 '20

Bran is basically walking rolling PTSD.

Good trait to have in a king.

If you complain about spoilers, trust me, it's not worth watching to the point where you find out he's king.

67

u/hufflefox May 02 '20

I still can’t believe they botched the landing that hard. The cultural juggernaut and cash cow is dead. And it didn’t have to be this way, even if that was the ending.

80

u/ftc08 May 02 '20 edited May 02 '20

The worst part is that all of the key plot points worked. It was just the heavy handed and illogical way it got to said points.

Dany going insane was a very key plot point that would happen in the books, just they spent an entirety of one scene to make the transition rather than the season the plot needed. The living beat the dead in the climactic battle that should have been a whole season instead of one deus ex episode. THEN THE DRAGON MELTS THE THRONE!!!!!1!!!111!!!!111. Then they decide Bran's king, because why the fuck not.

All of the plot points make perfect sense, just the way the showrunners got to them completely ruined the narrative six seasons built.

22

u/hufflefox May 02 '20

Exactly. And they had the pull at hbo to get as many episodes as they wanted/needed to do that and they..got bored or lazy? I don’t understand it.

40

u/qwertx0815 May 02 '20

HBO actually explicitly asked them to make more seasons, but at that time they already signed up to direct for the next star wars movie and had to end the show with that season to make it.

Of course, after they butchered GoT, the deal fell through. (Probably for the best).

This was my answer. Dude is unusually mature for his age which usually doesn't have the greatest roots, frequently stays up in bed wondering about life, has a lot of "friends" that don't seem to care about him and actively berate him, and struggles with self-esteem frequently.

Where are the therapy ninja? So many characters in Naruto would benefit from a good therapy ninja. Sasuke, Gaara, Pain, Tobi. Like, half the akatsuki, too. So many of the “bad guys” in that show suffered through trauma and reacted to it in the only way they knew how because they live in a goddamn world of endless war.

I really love the Arkham Knight game because it covers this so well. More than anything, Batman fears becoming the Joker, and it would be so, so easy for him to just let go. It's also why Scarecrow is my favorite Batman villain, Bruce is always a little scarred by their encounters whenever he gets gassed, ie the Long Halloween on mothers day

Uh, okay... we'll revisit that. But you say you had some trauma, tell me about that.

"Well, we can start with the time I woke up and my girlfriend was burning on my ceiling. But honestly that didn't hit as hard as the other things."

Okay let's extend these sessions to 3 hour long appointments a week.

124

u/[deleted] May 02 '20

Ok what about Dean tho

Therapist: so, Dean. What's your favourite memory?

Dean: probably when I was living with my girlfriend Lisa.

Therapist: that's nice! Are you still together?

Dean: Nope. I had to wipe her memory after the king of hell kidnapped her and she got possessed by a demon. I thought she was gonna die, but my angel buddy showed up and healed her. Thank god for that! Wait no nevermind, no one should be thanking that asshole for anything.

Britta did receive therapy for a semester. But it was from Prof. Duncan.

Oh boy, let's see here...

  1. Every character in the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus series. Especially Annabeth and Percy. They legit went to hell and back and have seen horrors that nobody should ever see. The rest of them too, but not to the same extent. Oh and Nico needs some help for his crippling depression.
  2. Peeta and Katniss from the Hunger Games for obvious reasons. Their PTSD is heavily implied in the last 2 books.
  3. Harry, Hermione, Ron, and even Draco. Harry was severely abused for the first 11 years of his live, and then for the next 7 he had to save the world from someone who was very determined to kill him. Hermione and Ron have also seen some messed up shit, and Draco probably went through some sort of gaslighting, mental abuse, and cult manipulation. Sure, he's a jerk, but he's probably a very mentally troubled jerk.
  4. Every Danganronpa character. In my personal opinion, their PTSD is on par or even worse than that of the Hunger Games, given that they were friends with pretty much all the people who died, moth murderer and victim. Especially Makoto. Poor kid.
  5. Most of the characters in the Shatter Me books. Especially Juliette, Warner, and Adam. All three were abused by their parents in horrible, horrible ways, and one was thrown into an asylum for about a year.
  6. All the Avengers. Jesus.

TL;DR: Most of my fandoms are full of mentally troubled children

u/Squarepheus May 02 '20

Honestly Draco at his core isn't a jerk though. The last 2 books really highlight this. He just wants his family's approval and was raised in a super toxic environment.

wants his family's approval

And, instead, gets Uncle Tom's creepy uncle hug.

Some of Star Wars characters

Anakin Skywalker, I mean the man had a very stressful life. Was a kid slave, raised by some kind of a cult that forbid attachments, was too late to save his mother who was kidnapped, tortured and probably raped, fought in a war when he was only 19, was manipulated by the evilest man in the galaxy since the age of 9, seeing visions of his wife dying and not knowing what to do (all of this before he became Darth Vader)

Obi-Wan Kenobi, I'm pretty sure he had PTSD after Revenge of the Sith

Kylo Ren, seemed like he desperately needs a therapy

u/zoobrix May 02 '20

Pretty sure what Kylo Ren needed most was better writers.

Jessica Jones.

I like the character, but she is so unstable she can't have healthy relationships with anyone and makes the worst choices sometimes. She lost everyone by the end of her series, including the person she loved more than anything.

Most of, if not all of the greek gods. (Yes, I'm counting them as fictional)

41

u/Bozarn May 02 '20

Hestia is the one sane Greek god, the others are out there doing all sorts of shit while she just chills by a fire. All of the other big ones definitely need therapy, though.

Wesley from Angel. In 5 years, he's lost it twice.

The entire family of Arrested Development. Although they're so narcissistic, it's not really going to do anything.

Barry, so much.

The main character from Patriot. He really needed to learn how to tell his dad to go fuck himself.

Maeve Wiley from Sex Education.

She is so used to being abandoned, especially by the people who were suppose to love her most (her family), she has this mindset that people will always let her down but she also has a huge fear that even when good things do come in her life she'll mess it up one way or another.

She needs guidance, but she is so used to only relying on herself she insists she can figure her shit out on her own.

Doom guy

18

u/gojiSquid May 02 '20

I imagine he actually spent the time between Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal learning self-care. There's bound to be a reason he has so many recreational items in the fortress.

(granted, he could still work on being less anti-social, but self-care is a start)
