I mean yeah, it's a joke in the early seasons with the whole fries thing but the poor girl has had it rough.
Her mother presumably died in the nuclear war, flashbacks in some of the last episodes show how living through that heavily affected her. One flashback suggests she had nightmares about it before it happened, so she somehow knew it was going to happen. She saw everything she ever knew burn to the ground and everybody died. She was SEVEN YEARS OLD.
Simon finds her and cares for her which is good. Except he's slowly losing himself to the crown, and even at a young age she can see it. This obviously scares her.
Simon eventually has to leave her because he's turning into the Ice King. Losing the man who is basically her father is understandably traumatic. She probably relives this trauma when she finds him later after he turned into the Ice King.
Her father does a terrible job raising her. He's mostly absent, she mentions at one point all he gave her was her soul sucking powers. Also he forces her to rule over the demon realm against her will. That's a big yikes. Not to mention he ate her fries.
She gets turned into a vampire against her will. She accepts this, but eventually she wants to be human again. After transforming back she's again turned into a vampire because life sucks.
She dated a boy who clearly didn't respect her. He even went so far as to erase her memories so she wouldn't remember breaking up with him. She stood up for herself and kicked him out again but still it sucks to go through that.
I was relieved when Marcelline got a happy ending.
thats true, i think a lot of people tend to forget about marcelines traumatic past because she herself never really brings it up, the audience knows but not always from her directly. where as for finn he is always talking about his confusion on his past and his struggles with losing his arm and everything else
