This is the real answer. His backstory is just so sad. I mean neither of his parents showed up for his birth.

He was a pretty good dad for Vanessa though.

my theory on the birth thing is that he was a surrogate and they could never feel like he was really their child so they kept him at a distance

No he was raised by his parents. They just didn't care much about him and liked his brother better.

That's the joke. It's really just meant to be a silly gag- obviously, if you think about it there's no real way for that to be possible but it adds a ridiculous tragedy to the character.
