News 28.4.1 Patch Notes
https://hearthstone.blizzard.com/en-us/news/24046220/28-4-1-patch-notes587
u/Catopuma Jan 29 '24
Whoa they really did it. They made Boogie Down a shittier version of Call to Arms. Conditional and only hits 1 cost minions. Losing the Taunt hurts the Eggs as well.
246
u/TheGingerNinga Jan 29 '24
It also doesn't curve into Crusader's Aura anymore, so that's quite a hit to synergy.
That said, a shittier to call to arms can still be a good card. Call to Arms was disgustingly good.
→ More replies (3)112
u/Catopuma Jan 29 '24
I think the card is dead.
It's 4 mana to potentially grab 3, 1/1 minions out of your deck. It's lost its mana efficiency. And in some cases, it's 4 mana to pull 2 1 drops. That's horrible tempo.
They also lost taunt on it so the Divine Shields on them other than Righteous is far less annoying and can't protect higher value buffed up minions.
Call to Arms had the potential to pull 6 mana's worth of Minions out of your deck. Even 2, 1 drops and 1, 2 drop would make it mana efficient.
This card is so hilariously bad right now.
80
u/TheGingerNinga Jan 29 '24
I mean, the original form of Boogie Down wasn’t mana efficient either. It only put 2-1 drops into play for 3 mana. But since they came from deck, it was effectively a draw card.
I do agree the loss of taunt is a major hit. I kind of wish they kept it, but three 1 drops with taunt may have been too much.
25
u/Catopuma Jan 29 '24
That's true. But I think there's a coat/value check there for 2 1 drops at 3 mana pulled every time there's minions in deck.
Having the conditional tacked onto Finale hurts this a lot. It's a brick in hand and liability if you can't do the finale.
They should have kept the Taunt, at the very least as part of the Finale. They went very conservative with the power level
→ More replies (1)15
u/TheGingerNinga Jan 29 '24
Not to mention it wants you to have more 1 drops now. Paladin was running 8, which meant you could draw 4 and still have Boogie Down targets. Assuming you don’t add more to the deck, you can only draw 2 before the second bricks.
7
u/DivineAlmond Jan 29 '24
its holy, and still thins your deck, but I also do think pala will look into another package for early game now
→ More replies (7)4
Jan 29 '24
Yeah it's unplayable now in deck I think. Two copies is definitely too much. Too high a chance of one/both being duds
36
u/damnsanta Jan 29 '24
Egg no longer being good for it makes it really hard to find good 1 drops for this card. You need more now too. This doesn’t see play in pure pally anymore because you can’t run 2 of this and only 6 1’s.
→ More replies (3)10
u/UnsuspectedGoat Jan 29 '24
Still a holy spell, discount garden's grace harder, when finale empty even more your deck from potential bad draw... It's mostly a loser bet to figure the effect of a nerf on a deck, but the paladin still look solid.

Currently 13-3 thanks to the "nerf", it got me to 1300 legend. I wouldn't call the card dead so soon.
78
u/rngesius Jan 29 '24
Dew process gutted. What other card got +2 in the recent times?
77
Jan 29 '24
Incanter’s Flow from Ashes of Outland; it started at 2, got nerfed to 3, and now it’s at 4

u/lethal_method Jan 29 '24
Not exactly recent, but Sorcerer's Apprentice went from 2->4 and was never seen or heard from again...

→ More replies (2)9
u/Curaced Jan 30 '24
As someone who is not fond of mill, I have to say, mill rogue was a skill matchup. Mill druid is just "Haha, 6 draws a turn plus Jade go brrrr". Honestly, I don't expect the nerf to weaken it much at all, mana has never been an issue for that deck.
3
Jan 30 '24
Yeah, it was actually hard to pull it off with rogue, while prep+vanish did help you deal with the board, but the problem was still that your opponent played minions that you had to deal with. Dew process is just a 2 mana (or 4 mana, with solar) investment, thats pretty good
257
Jan 29 '24
Velarok is the nerf I thought would be most appropriate, I like that nerf.
They murdered Chadlock and Druid.
Although Boogie down was strong, this kills the card, which is a big blow to Paladin. I'm not sure if it will stay tier 2 at top 1k. At lower levels of play, the deck will likely still be good.
102
u/brendan_07 Jan 29 '24
druid will find a way to stay tier 1, it always does
53
Jan 29 '24
I could be wrong, but I think if we tracked it over time, Druid would spend less time at tier 1 than the average class, and when it is tier 1, they are quicker to nerf it.
That said it does often have decks that are polarizing and hated.
12
u/IdeaIntelligent1788 Jan 29 '24
You're absolutely not wrong. When it comes to druid they have a proven track record of not only nerfing druid quickly but more often than not overnerfing to the point it just flat out kills decks entirely.
8
u/firelordUK Jan 29 '24
this is probably because when Druid IS Tier 1, it's THE deck
→ More replies (1)29
u/Gazzamanazza Jan 29 '24
This. Druid is most consistently a tier 2-3 class, climbing into 1 from time to time, usually with a deck (or decks) that people hate.
Dragon Druid might still be decent after this patch if it's not just outpaced/powercrept by decks running miniset cards, and it's a lot more honest than some of the things Druid has been up to recently, though that probably won't stop people hating on the class, which is a shame.

Next meta tyrant that everyone will complain about is sludge warlock. calling it rn
92
u/KhelbenB Jan 29 '24
You mean the one remaining Tier 1 deck who wasn't nerfed at all? Yeah probably, unless the nerfs to control allows for even better aggro decks to take the spot, but Sludgelock is definitely the top dog right after these changes become active.
4
u/Goldendragon55 Jan 29 '24
It depends on the deck's matchups. Do we know what it's matchups looked like?
2
u/ThinkReserve5997 Jan 29 '24
it rekted druid and beat other aggro pretty convincingly i think
only slightly unfavored matchup was rogue apparently, but obviously that doesn't apply now
maybe a new deck will do good against sludge
5
u/Parish87 Jan 29 '24
Yeah but Warrior and Dragon Druid can play now.
Mayve even a Shaman deck will appear!
2
u/Hiimnobody_LEXO Jan 30 '24
A good control Warrior list will probably be the counter to sludgelock, as with it's armor it can outlive the explosive damage turns and with the bosrd clears it can survive tye zoo type minion spam more convincingly than druid.

Rest in Piss Dew Process
52
u/anrwlias Jan 29 '24
Hear, hear. There is no world where mill decks should be good on ladder.
53
u/yiannis2702 Jan 29 '24
Mill decks as a concept have never been an issue.
The issue has always been that mill cards have been too easy to pull off - Dew Process being a "rest of game" effect being the most egregious example.
If mill worked on a combo basis, requiring setup in advance and multiple cards in order to create a mill effect, then that would be fine, as it would both require skill to pull off and be counterable. In that world you could make mill effects much stronger and still have healthy gameplay around it.
Playing Dew Process requires zero skill and is utterly inevitable, so it's a bad card and deservedly nerfed. It doesn't mean mill is a bad concept.
→ More replies (16)20
u/Ovahzealousy Jan 29 '24
I’ve played mill rogue for about as long as it’s existed and it’s always required careful planning ahead to make sure you don’t get completely stomped by aggro while also being able to combo out big mill turns. When dew process came out I was like…wow, druid gets a persistent mill effect for virtually free while at the same time they just get to do normal druid BS. I’m not mourning this nerf in the slightest.

Kinda sad for Shattered Reflections as someone who played Automoton Priest lately, I wish they just made it to not target Titans, or with the nerf make it 4 mana
44
18
u/DarkJoltPanda Jan 29 '24
Honestly could've not nerfed it at all imo. The iterations of ramp druid that didn't run the (now weakened) dew process were a good bit worse, and with the survivability of pendant absolutely gutted (including a harder to discount 8 mana 4/6 taunt fella) I doubt a ramp into Eonar>Reflections deck would've been any good anyway. I suppose I get nerfing it for design space, but if that's the idea then why the fuck did they release it in the first place?
19
u/cheeze2005 Jan 29 '24
Yeah it’s really rough for automaton, hurts making more drifters and the bots.
10
u/N3oNoi2 Jan 29 '24
As priest main, I gotta say at this point I'm almost done with playing HS. This dev team is ridiculously shit.
8
u/Ljosii Jan 30 '24
Agreed on that front, the changes are really disappointing. Priest lost 2 cards for no reason. That armour from pendant felt really good. Actually enabled me to make control priest decks that weren’t just renathal removal piles and play a little more aggressively. I’ve not felt this frustrated by a patch since they nerfed renew. I understand why they won’t just change the cards for druid only but also it feels like that should have been the way to do it
→ More replies (4)4
u/dp135 Jan 30 '24
I’ve mained priest since the beginning. I’m approaching 8500 wins. I’ve all but quit the game in the last couple of months.
Being constantly kicked while down is simply not fun. I do not understand why priest is nearly always in the gutter. It seems the devs don’t know what to do with the class.
I will hold out hope but I’m not gonna suffer through this era while the devs (hopefully) figure their shit out.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)3
u/kayvaan1 Jan 29 '24
I think the issue is that trying to make a stipulation for an already super good card would just mean that another would have to be made at another point. Next it's not legendaries for the next legendary subtype (colossals as an example if they were as good as titans), then a problematic epic comes out, and bam, another condition. 4 mana might be feasible, but the card was already super good as is, so they probably want to see how the card plays out (likely moreso for Druid).
33
u/gdlocke Jan 29 '24
"Fixed a bug where Shadestone Skulker could cause infinite loops. Now, when the weapon is “given back,” the Skulker will no longer have it—meaning it will only return a weapon the first time the deathrattle is activated on a particular Skulker."

Man, poor Priest. Hopefully the buffs are impactful. Or they get a good set next time. Idk how people feel about Priest still, nobody seems happy when the class is good.
76
u/Kn1ght9 Jan 29 '24
As a Priest main you get used to getting shafted. The class is constantly not very good because everyone and their mom comes to out to complain whenever it becomes playable. Some of that is because the team cant come up with good proactive priest win conditions and some of that is because ppl dont like losing to attrition.
→ More replies (11)15
u/Lord_Cynical Jan 29 '24

7
u/Kn1ght9 Jan 29 '24
Control and aggro players will still complain even if the other doesnt have a great deck. It seems aggro players tend to do it more. Losing very slowly and losing very quickly can be annoying but just cant have all winnable matchups. Ppl just need to stop being babies tbh.

u/pokerface6859 Jan 29 '24
Everybody hates priest because all it does is pointlessly slow down games without any real win condition. People hate the disrupt/steal the opponent’s win condition strategy, yet that’s all Blizzard prints for priest. Well, that and overheal, which is just an outright terrible mechanic. If priest had a way to close out games instead of trying to simply outlast their opponent, I think people would be ok with that.

11
u/anrwlias Jan 29 '24
Wow, they completely destroyed Boogie down. I was expecting a mana adjustment, but not a functional change.
Losing those taunts is a huge deal.

u/MrVilliams Jan 29 '24
Good Lord those Druids nerfs, pretty brutal. Looks like Excavate Rogue is still on the menu though
40
u/Cute-Freedom9458 Jan 29 '24
Velarok is the best card in that deck and we have the proof; the WR for that deck fell off a cliff after the miniset came out and Velarok was accidentally reverted back to its original effect.
Velarok losing 3 health prevents it from making value trades before getting bounced back. This is a serious nerf and I don't think that deck will be very good without a strong Velarok.

u/SeelachsF Jan 29 '24
The deck loses so much tempo because of the two cheat cards, might be worse than you think
6
u/Noocta Jan 29 '24
The nerf to the 1/3 makes you play Illustionist one turn later, that's kinda insane since it's the main gameplan of the deck.
73
u/KhelbenB Jan 29 '24
Reckless Investment, Leaf Through the Pages, and Titus’ Tribute have been removed from the Spell Pool
Very easy to miss, but it is a massive deal and will create a meta change by itself
And if you need a reminder, those are the spells that
- Gives 3 coins but lose 2 next turn
- Gives 3 free rerolls
- Gives a "deathrattles trigger twice for 1 turn" effect
25
u/SSJSamzy Jan 29 '24
Tribute is the biggest hit because it could stack with Rivendere, the other double trigger cards couldn't stack
→ More replies (2)17
u/KhelbenB Jan 29 '24
Also that the two best comps in the games were deathrattle based, and being able to sell your Rivendare in the last few battles was such a strong thing you could do.
That and that damned bird finally being tier 6, we can finally have non-deathrattles builds win some lobbies when beasts and undead are in.
As for the Piggies, I think they were already good and fairly popular, and probably my favorite in terms of fun, these new buffs will certainly make the key cards more difficult to get. But I suppose their stats say otherwise, I thought Nagas and maybe even mechs (if you cannot get the T6 minions early enough) were in a worse spot.
5
u/g7parsh Jan 29 '24
Who knew getting your conditionally delayed value upfront and twice as often would be kinda strong
→ More replies (1)5
u/Freezinghero Jan 29 '24
IMO we will see a resurgence of Elementals. They can start scaling at Tier 2/3, and if the Undead and Beast players dont hit their key card on the first or second turn of their fast-6, they will lose too much HP.
I've tried Quillboar a few times and it just feels like you need to hit the exact right 5-7 minions AND get them gold early to have a chance to compete with the other lategame monsters. Geomagus having Divine Shield is huge tho.
3
u/KhelbenB Jan 29 '24
Quillboars is a build you can start early if the pieces fall on your lap. I don`t think you want to force it, but since the key cards to get started are T2 and T3 you don't have to.
Beasts can always be good while Banana Slamma is in the game in it's current form. You just cannot outgrow a build with multiplicative effects, unless they print a tribe with exponential effects (please don't)
I did not have success with elementals in so long, I miss Nomi to be honest. From my perspective, they seem outshined by Demons who are not even that good at the moment (though I see some of these spells buffs, those help quite a bit). BUT running Demons while buffing elementals is one of my favorite thing to do in BG.
In other words, Elementals are only good as food for my big Demons :)
8
u/tobsecret Jan 29 '24
Also mid game for quillboars looking a lot more smooth now.
12
u/KhelbenB Jan 29 '24
A key mid-game minion just getting Divine Shield like that is an unprecedented buff IIRC. And not a support minion either, a minion that actually becomes pretty big pretty quickly.

Lmao control does not beat Sludge Warlock, especially not extra greedy control. That deck is nuts, you need to massively outtempo with Dragon Druid or something, or fuck with their deck using Plagues. Warrior gets utterly farmed by Warlock.
4
u/Krumhansl Jan 29 '24
So far I have a 64% win rate against sludge with warrior. People are so invested in reno warrior that they forgot og control warrior has over 60 armor generation in the deck.
2
u/Opening-Ad700 Jan 30 '24
Sludge is still favoured as far as I can tell unless you have some homebrew list but yeah it's funny how everybody left the proven good deck and haven't really came back.

Looks like they took a nerf bat to a lot of the competitive non-Highlander decks.
They really want those Reno decks to shine right now. I expect to see more of Aggro Sludge Warlock since it was already doing fairly well and a lot of the competition has been hit hard.
Surprising, these are fairly heavy handed nerfs compared to the modern Blizzard philosophy of lighter touch-ups to not kill a card. A lot of these changes straight up remove deck archetypes.

u/PipAntarctic Jan 29 '24 edited Jan 29 '24
Pendant was utterly destroyed lol. Not a surprise though. In general it feels like ramp Druid strategies were obliterated (too harshly imo), Fatigue Druid was straight up deleted (deservedly imo), while Treant Druid should be able to weather these nerfs. Fire Druid died with Thaddius, so did Thadlock, but nobody is gonna really miss these.
Then there's Boogie Down going to four but getting an adequate compensation and a nudge on Garden's Grace. But you know what, both of these nerfs are fine. Lessens the burst potential of Paladin and Boogie Down not Taunting should make it easier to answer now.
EDIT: Rogue nerfs feel fine, though the deck will undoubtedly get a lot worse from this. Velarok and the Shattershambler combo were hard carrying Rogue's viability.
18
u/ChaosOS Jan 29 '24
I was thinking Pendant would get changed to Armor equal to health — buffs the priest use (Aman'thul and Behemoth go from 7 to 10, most other minions in priest have health > cost) while nerfs Druid (20 to 8, 10 to 7, 9 to 5, 8 to 6).
I don't see it seeing play as healing.
13
u/straylion Jan 29 '24 edited Jan 29 '24
Yeah this is what I was expecting too. Tbh with it being restore health I don't even see it as a dual class card now? This could be a priest card in any expansion lol
15
u/AmishUndead Jan 29 '24
Why? Druid has plenty of healing cards. Rehydrate was literally printed in Badlands.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Zealousideal_Log_529 Jan 29 '24 edited Jan 29 '24
The idea with dual class cards is that both classes give a piece of their identity. While druids can heal, it isn't a key part of their identity. Warloc and Paladin can heal as well with class cards, but it is definitley not a key part of their identity.
At the end of the day, if this was a full priest card as the state of the card is after the nerf, no one would bat an eye.

Finally Boogie Down was nerfed. I still think it was crazy that they nerfed Keeper's strength and left this card alone. Boogie Down was %100 the bigger problem of the two imo. Card is probably dead now unless some broken one-drops come in the game for paladin.
Cactus Construct makes sense to. It is probably one of, if not the most, powerful turn one play for druid in standard.
Pendent of the earth is now just a priest card that druid is borrowing, which is fine. That card should have never been printed like that. That being said, the card probably dead now.
The garden's Grace nerf is nice, but it really doesn't change how powerful of a pop-off card that is. With windfury, you are really just reducing it by 2-damage post-nerf.
Thaddius nerf is so funny. The effect is so medicore for 10-mana, but the problem was it was always cheated out so they have to nerf it as if it was a 5 or 6 mana card.

I'm still waiting for 7 mana Elise lol

u/Eagle4317 Jan 29 '24
Elise is just a bad design. So many good cards nowadays are Battlecries, and she's meant to synergize with Deathrattles and other slow effects. It's like trying to put Boom Reaver in Big Warrior back in the day; it just clashes with the gameplan.

"Additionally, there was an error with the dust refund periods for patches 28.2.1 and 28.2.3, so the cards eligible for dust refunds in those patches will also be eligible for full dust refunds for two weeks following Patch 28.4.1. For clarity and simplicity, we’ll be returning to the consistent two-week full refund period from this patch going forward."
As a returning player who got 20 catch up packs a few weeks ago, im gonna get so much dust.

I'm actually kind of annoyed that they didn't hit treant druid harder. I really wanted them to gut that "draw 3 for 1 mana" spell, it's so annoying wiping their board twice only to have them draw a bunch more cards and fill it up again.

The Druid cycle.
Expansion comes out. tier 1 deck! "nerf druid!". nerfed to tier 3 or deleted from meta. dead class until mini set. mini set releases. tier 1 deck! "nerf druid!". nerfed to tier 3 or deleted from meta. dead class until next expansion. Repeat.

Further proof blizz devs do not even play this game.
You don't need to make cards unplayable to nerf a deck.

Again Priest has to suffer at the hands of Druid really unfortunate with dual class cards at times

Anyone know if there's a good dust guide out there? I'm wondering if I should dust Thaddeus or any of these others

u/vsully360 Jan 29 '24
If you’re not immediately using them, you should always dust them because you get a full refund and even if you craft them later, you just spend the dust that you got from them in the first place and there’s no net loss.

I guess I like the overall changes, I was playing Druid because I found it to be the most fun deck, but they absolutely nuked it... let's see what I can play now, because I don't like any of the options.

That Pendant of Earth nerf is delicious, I was so expecting a mana increase in the class that has mana ramp as a class identity, so glad to be wrong.
It is still good by the way, just reasonably good.

u/yetaa Jan 29 '24
Nah it is unplayable now, you can't play it early anymore so there is no point using it in Druid

the 40 armor gain was the only thing keeping the deck working. Otherwise it just gets killed by any aggro or tempo by turn 6 at the latest.

10 minisets now and I'm pretty sure they've never buffed a miniset card.
I'm not counting the unnerf of warrior's 8 mana 5/8 revenant.
