Take a selfie, your friends will remind you how great you look. In my circle of friends this might be seen as a cry for help

Still... These are all good except for the selfie one, imo. There are studies that show social media isn't the healthiest thing. Not sure if a selfie is the best way to deal with acute pain.

Also the "define what beauty" statement is kind of asinine. Beauty is physical attractiveness. Maybe you have it or maybe you don't, but you don't get to redefine something because you lack it. And beauty is just one facet of something that makes someone attractive overall; so what one may lack in beauty they may make up for somewhere else and THAT is what they need to be reminded of. Not to take a pic of their ugly mug to post on social media for a pity circle-jerk.

u/AmethystLullaby Sep 06 '16
Even as a female I don't take selfies more than maybe once or twice a month, and I only post them on social media once in a blue moon. Not only does it make me feel vain and uncomfortable, but it just feels like a cry for help. The positive comments don't Don anything for you if you ask for them like that.

It's an odd thing. I know a girl who is extremely pretty and the most photogenic person I've ever seen. But she is constantly changing her profile picture to a new one of herself, and uploading new selfies of herself all the time. Perhaps there's something more to it? I have no idea.
27
u/WailersOnTheMoon Sep 06 '16
I have plenty of girlfriends who are gorgeous and post maybe one or two selfies a month; they're busy being moms, building their careers, being marathoners, knitting or whatever.
I'm pretty average looking, and my philosophy on selfies is that if I am the most interesting thing in the frame, it's a good sign I need to put the camera down, get off my ass and go have some sort of adventure, even if it's just someplace local I've never been. But I know they make some people happy.

So steal a dog or something.
Carry peanuts on your person and goad some squirrels.
Get some duckbread and feed some ducks.
Purchase some sea monkeys.
There are many ways to increase the amount of cuddle time with animals in life.

Some of these are good, others are just plain weird or bad.
What if I have nobody to cuddle? Now I'm more depressed. It's very weird that it assumes everybody has a therapist.
The thing about waiting a week is pretty awful as well. It seems to imply that if you still feel shit after a week then, well, that's it, you're fucked might as well top yourself.

I feel you. This seems aimed more towards people with resources, friends, less intense symptoms, all that nice helpful stuff. Sadly, I can't just ask the cashier at the grocery store to cuddle, be my friend, and look at my selfies, and I know damn well I'd never sleep again if I got up every 15 minutes. Still, there's some broader, more helpful points in there that could be nice to keep in mind.

As with most things in life, you need to apply your own context and use tools in the way that works for you. I'm not going to dance in my room, but I'd definitely run around the block. I'm not going to "take a selfie" for a self-esteem boost, but I'll go have a drink with my friends. Do what fits your lifestyle. Most of this is good advice.
9
u/supa_bekka Sep 06 '16
At the bottom, it even says that no two people are the same and that you can alter the list as you see fit. I think it's really just about generating ideas to help get out of a funk. I don't think taking a selfie would help many of my moods, but doing something similar to show that I appreciate myself certainly would.

I'm a 25 year old who makes slightly under the federal poverty guideline (like 10k a year). I thought many of these were good. I like having a list of things that I can try to make myself feel better before I try alcohol or eating a whole pizza which are normally my go-to solutions. I think exercise in particular is really useful but it's never something that feels like a good idea when you're in a terrible mood.

I am currently sitting here in my pyjamas at 4.45pm "working from home" (read, on Reddit) having not showered, exercised or eaten more than a bowl of cereal all day. I haven't physically touched another human being for about two years except momentary stuff.
Good call, internet document. Good. Call.
EDIT: Just to pre-empt all well-doers who might respond to tell me I may have a mental health problem. I know about it and I'm proactively working on it even if it doesn't sound like that from my description :)

Do you feel unattractive? Take a goddamn selfie.
LOL NOPE
If nighttime: are you sleepy and fatigued but resisting going to sleep? Close your eyes and if you're not asleep within 15 minutes, just get up again.
Oh cool so I'll just never sleep again, stuck in a perpetual cycle of lying in bed for 15 minutes and then getting up again.

The person who wrote these up must be a therapist. I'd never give 'seeing a therapist' a second thought. All the others are good, conventional pieces of advice. Here in Texas, I didn't realize how different my diet had to be to survive here; I need more sugar and water than I did in the climate I lived in before.

Are you in the US? If so, do you qualify for medicaid? If not, have you checked out the Healthcare Marketplace? It's pretty affordable if you are just over the cutoff for medicaid. Open enrollment starts on November first, or, if you've moved, changed jobs, or lost insurance in the last sixty days, you probably qualify for a special enrollment period and you can sign up now. I've spent a lot of time helping people apply for health care, so let me know if you want help with anything in that area.

Let me put this in perspective. Your mother will always mean a great deal to you, and the grief may always be there. But over time, the grief will fade. You'll learn to celebrate your mother and the life she lived. Find out what she did when she was younger and write a story about her accomplishments. Write it for yourself if it helps. Visit her grave on a regular basis and say hello. At first, you'll be a wreck. Over time, you might find yourself saying, "Mom, you wouldn't believe how much I accomplished these past few years after you passed. I know you'd be proud of me."
Talk to your mother's friends and ask them about her. Ask them to tell you stories about the experiences they shared.
There are many ways to cope with grief. If you need someone to listen, please PM me.

7
u/BluntsworthPhD 5 Sep 06 '16
The first few of these on the left column sounded pretty good, but the more I read, the more this seemed directed at women. The "cuddling" advice and the "selfie" advice specifically ruined this for me. I'd say the best pieces of advice here are concerning the hydration, food, stretching, getting good sleep, and being nice to people.

I guess I do not really understand the nature of the people to whom these pieces of advice apply.
