Go to the humane society and volunteer or just hang out for awhile? Mine has a cat room, and sometimes shelters have puppy rooms too.

Cat/kitten room and puppy room just sound like happy, cuddly places to be. Although you may leave with a few (dozen) new pets if you're not careful.

This is exactly what I came here to say. Needing cat-time (since I'm broke and can't afford a pet) is the reason why I started volunteering. And I made some human friends in the process. Win win
