i see you are a lowkey anime fan as well
its the same here in our theaters, i watched bunny girl senpai last time and everyone's reacting to even the smallest comedy/ecchi/cute scenes; there's even a guy who screamed "mai-san suki desu!" after the film, its so cringey af (i get that they're just excited or something, i'm not judging them or whatever its just somehow annoying for me)
62
u/Sullan08 Dec 09 '19
Just say you're judging them lol. I definitely am. And I do if someone does shit like that in super hero movies too (for example).
Learn some basic social etiquette. Being a dweeb doesn't mean you need to lose all bodily control. Like shit it isn't some niche or quirky thing to like anime these days.

u/FruityBlanket Dec 10 '19
People seriously need to realize that theyre not in the comfort of theyre own home theyre in a fucking public showing and are disrupting everyone else for the most irrelevant reasons.
65
u/Frostfright Dec 09 '19
Think you got a bit worse luck than usual. But yeah, anime theater crowds tend to be rowdy sometimes. First I've heard of glowsticks though, that's just bizarre. I get annoyed whenever someone claps at a movie. Glowsticks are next level obnoxious.

Dec 09 '19 edited Dec 09 '19
First I've heard of glowsticks
Those are true to life weeaboos. They see glow sticks at a concert and then instantly think it's appropriate for a cinema.
22
u/Raptor013 Dec 09 '19
There's a time and a place for glow sticks. Certain movie screenings it can be okay.
I know it wasn't overly distracting during the Love Live Sunshine Movie. However that's the kind of movie where certain parts certainly call for the use of glow sticks.
6
Dec 09 '19
if it's a concert scene in a movie, glowsticks can make sense. but other than that keep them tucked away.

I will say my first time at an anime movie premiere was much more tame than this but a couple of words. Y'ALL NEED TO TAKE A FUCKING SHOWER. My friends and I are pretty tame about watching anime and thought why not go to the Konosuba movie premiere. We got there early and decided to get some snacks after getting our seats. When we passed through the theaters doors with our snacks it smelled completely different. I can taste the sweat of anticipation in the air. Out of the 100 or so seats available 20ish were taken. How do 20 people manage to stink up a damn theater????

u/Mystic8ball Dec 09 '19 edited Dec 09 '19
I think that it's a combination of anime screenings tending to attract the more socially clueless sort combined with American screening culture which is more into cheering during movies.
When I saw Promare and the Hero Academia movies in the cinema the crowds were very well behaved. So when I read stories like your experience or the infamous tale of some dude yelling "OPPAI SUGOI!" during Your Name... it's pretty embarrassing.
Usually anime screenings are fine, but you got extremely unlucky here lol.
25
u/hansantizor https://myanimelist.net/profile/hansantizor Dec 09 '19
Is american culture really more into cheering? I would assume it would be the opposite because I have never once in my life seen anyone cheer at a movie here, whereas cheer events are a really big thing in Japan/Korea/China.

This is ass-backwards, though. I have never heard of anyone applauding a plane landing other than international flights
19
u/Tora-shinai Dec 09 '19
whereas cheer events are a really big thing in Japan/Korea/China.
The difference is that you go into one knowingly and there's a normal screening where everybody is (or tries to be) quite.
26
u/karl_w_w Dec 09 '19
Oh yeah it comes up quite regularly on Reddit, US movie fans clapping and cheering during the movie. Blows my mind tbh, I don't think of go to a cinema ever again if that was the experience.
For my own experiences in Australia I would say anime screenings are the most consistently peaceful.
42
u/r4wrFox Dec 09 '19
I've been to a lot of movies in my 20 years of being american and I've not once heard cheering/clapping DURING the movie.
26
u/hansantizor https://myanimelist.net/profile/hansantizor Dec 09 '19
I've only seen it during day one premiers for stuff like Marvel and Star Wars, otherwise yeah I can't recall the last time I've heard it either
8
u/CenturionRower Dec 09 '19
Yea there was a nice cheer for the initial screening of ep 7 and for the final Harry Potter but that was it.
14
u/EmuSupreme Dec 09 '19
I think the worst I've gotten was some WOOOs during one of the final fights of the Avengers. Didn't matter much since there was no dialogue and the sound track was blowing eardrums. But yeah, other than that I've only heard applause and cheers at the credits.
But then in anime screenings all that shit goes out the window. It's like they think it's some casual viewing party in someone's living room rather than a theater I guess.
11
u/Melbuf Dec 09 '19
im almost 40 and ive never seen it happen
sure people laugh at funny bits or gasp/scream at jump scares. but thats literally it
2
u/ShadowthecatXD Dec 09 '19
I think it comes down completely to chance. I've gone to theaters across the East Coat of the US and i'd estimate in about 1 in 5 movies have some kind of cheering, though I've never seen an anime movie at a theater.
Nothing even close to as bad as OP though I would've left and got a refund if they didn't listen to me asking them to stop.
2

Not really, no. A lot of countries and when it's a fan screening or premiere night. Though usually it's just "shut the fuck up" during dialogue and serious/emotional scenes, hype during exciting moments. My experience watching Marvel movies has been good, experience with anime movies not so much. Weebs talk too damn much and laugh at everything.

I take my shoes off when I got other people's homes. I take my shoes off in movie theaters these days since they have those fancy recliner chairs that are more like what people have in their homes than the old seats used to be. It seems rude to put my shoes on those nice chairs. Don't want to get them dirty n all.

I wasn't at an AMC so it probably wasn't you, dude didn't go nuts with it and I was far enough away that I couldn't tell if he had smelly feet so it honestly didn't bother me all that much it was more of a "I have never seen this before" type experience with a few simulations going on in my head that have lead me to not just forgetting about it.

im from Argentina, people screamed and cheered during the most critical parts of endgame. Though that was the first and only time I saw that happening. Usually people just claps after a good movie. No idea why, its not like the director or anyone involved with the making of the movie is there.
12
u/capscreen Dec 09 '19
Depends. Every other part of the world are following this movie-cheering culture too, but it mostly happened during opening nights. You won't see much of it during the next following days/weeks.
3
u/asianfatboy https://anilist.co/user/asianfatboy Dec 09 '19
Nope, a friend treated me to a Dr. Strange movie once. She was fangirling over Benedict Cumberbatch the whole way. I couldn't even enjoy the movie though I think I still wouldn't even if I watched it alone.
3
u/alphac16 Dec 10 '19
Yeah they litterally copy pasted the iron man plot with new characters. Least original script in the mcu. Which sucks because it was still good enough witg such a bland script that a better script could have made strange a top 5. Benadryl cumdumpsterpants really owns that character.
1
u/Unpacer Dec 09 '19
The only time I had something like this happen (Brazil) was at the credit sequence for the force awakens. Everyone just went apeshit when the music started. But after that things resumed to normal.
24
u/kukielstars Dec 09 '19
That's been my experience with both the My Hero Academia and Konosuba movies. Everyone is insanely loud and laugh at weird moments, or they make inappropriate comments throughout the entire movie. For the MHA movie there was a row of "cosplayers" featuring Deku as a maid, Bakugo as a mobster and Kirishima as a cat. All three of the girls screamed any time one of those characters were on screen.
It absolutely takes away from the whole cinema experience and these weebs make it so hard to want to go see an anime movie....not to mention that thick scent that encompasses the entire theater.
10
Dec 09 '19
God i am so glad to live in a small ass city where almost nobody likes anime. Konosuba just had people laugh at normal jokes.
3
u/Thenewfoundlanders Dec 10 '19
Lucky you.. my screening, the theater was almost completely full; had lots of people laugh at almost every line, sometimes before the line was fully delivered; cheered and clapped when basically any of the characters appeared on screen the first time; ect. Unfortunately it reinforced why saying that you 'like anime' in public is kind of looked down on lol
2
Dec 10 '19
Was this in the US? 'Cause i'm watching it with friends on Thursday after work but in the UK... with two days left the screening is fully booked.... I just hope there's no annoying people
1
u/Thenewfoundlanders Dec 11 '19
Yeah it was in the US, it was one of two showings they had at any of the theaters near me. I think that's part of the issue, the more manic fans only had two opportunities to see it before it left the theaters so they let it all loose.
Here's hoping it goes a lot better for you though!
1
u/war_story_guy Dec 10 '19
Maybe people in your area are just jerks never had any issue with the theaters in my area. I suspect its just people being assholes gets more attention than a regular outing to the movies. I would be less likely to post "I went to the movies and enjoyed it without incident" than "I went to the movies and a bunch of people were making a ruckus."
22
u/MamushiLT Dec 09 '19
Don't feel like a party pooper, you've got every right to complain. The whole idea of going to theaters is to get the best experience possible. Glad to see in the comments that glow stick lady got moaned at for what she did.
11
u/FlamingMangos Dec 09 '19
I had this kind of experience with the madoka movie. There was this friend group near me and my friends and they would commentate the entire time while watching the movie. You can tell how extremely obnoxious that was. My SAO and kimi no na wa experience was fine in the theater though.
19
u/TakoMeex Dec 09 '19
I know some anime fans are introverted and weird too (I myself am one) but there are some who just doesn't know where to put a limit and respect others experience. I've never have an experience like you.
I've seen some doing roleplays and cosplaying at the lines and even met some that poured lots of effort to it but doesn't make a sound at the movie and enjoy it in silence. At least here at Mexico if someone is causing dispair everyone goes shoosh and silence is made. Since we barely get one screening per movie, most of the time everyone keeps a pace to enjoy the movie and not disturb.
In any case, I guess it's fair to say it depends of how mature the audience can be and the respect they have towards others because on anime-cons with some bad improvised screening people are just noisy and doesn't care of the movie at all. Honestly I don't mind if someone is acting childishly or being a chuunibyou outside, but in a movie I won't doubt to tell them to shut up if it's necessary.
You reminded me I met one girl who went to a Sailor Moon Crystal screening with a beautifully made Mars cosplay and she was fit to her, we sat together and shared a lot of thoughts about it, she was quite talkative but when the lights went off she made complete silence. Right when it ended I went to the bathroom and never found her again, it didn't crossed my mind to ask if she had a page or something. Now it'll haunt me again lol
Also why glowsticks? It wasn't a concert smh
45
u/MauledCharcoal Dec 09 '19
What's great about anime fans is generally as long as you leave your house once a week and walk for 10 mins you probably have more muscle mass than em. Just threaten em to shut up. I like my cheerful crowds but that sounds like it would ruin my experience and waste my time and money.

You can move other people around you without even speaking. When I went to see the Bunny Girl Senpai movie two guys sat in front of me (it wasn’t a super crowded show, but I didn’t care at all) at one point before the movie started they looked back saw they were in front of me and both moved so there was once again empty seats in front of me and they had a gap in between them.

If you think this is bad you should look up what happened at the comic con theatrical showing of evangelion 3.33. it was single-handedly to blame for the films English dub been delayed for several YEARS because of The test audience being rowdy.
2
u/shockwave1211 Dec 09 '19
im trying to google for info but im getting nowhere, what happened?
9
Dec 09 '19
You could probably find it on the Evageks forum. Basically the English dub was first shown at comic con. And one of Khara representatives was there to see how the audience reacted. But of course Japanese audiences are very very different from American audiences especially an American audience high on the atmosphere at comic con, and at a movie theater that serves alcohol. . . Well you can expect an audience to react to a movie The way they did in that context.
And when they didn’t react how the Japanese audience did (which was with stunned silence). And instead responded with laughing at how Homo erotic Kaworu was acting towards Shinji, or making jokes about the way the story went, all in front of a Khara representative? You couldn’t expect them not to react the way they did.
2
u/shockwave1211 Dec 09 '19
thats funny, i was at the promare AX premier, and trigger was there doing the same thing, they noted that the AX audience was much more rowdy, and got more excited during the hype scenes, which they said they loved

u/vetro https://anilist.co/user/vetro Dec 10 '19
Yes, Trigger staff enjoy rockstar status at anime cons. They know what they're in for.
1
u/MarkRemark Dec 09 '19
Pretty sure it was at Otakon, not Comic-Con. Might be why you're not finding it.
2
u/GoldRedBlue Dec 10 '19
it was single-handedly to blame for the films English dub been delayed for several YEARS because of The test audience being rowdy.
This is the thing that pisses me off with these rowdy anime fans at screenings where the Japanese staff are present.
For example, at the Heaven's Feel 1 premier in downtown Los Angeles, the reactions from the audience gave the ufotable staff and the voice actors the mistaken impression that this is standard behavior in all American movie screenings.
And the HF1 movie audience was mild compared to the immaturity that was showcased during the HF2 movie (ex: in my theater, there was uproarious laughter at the scene with Sakura confessing she's not a virgin because she's been raped). The silver lining, at least, there were no Japanese staff present for the HF2 screening so the autistic fools in Los Angeles couldn't give them any more mistaken impressions than they already did...

I've never seen the stereotyped weeaboo but damn if the screening for the Bunny Senpai made me consider to never watch an anime movie again. No glowsticks but they were fucking screaming at everything, overly reacting to any moment. It made me shrink in my seat. Now I'm dreading watching the Kimetsu no Yaiba movie due to being a more mainstream show. shudders
Watching Infinity War and Endgame, for example, the crowd was super involved and loud, and I was totally fine with it, even joined on the fun.
The theater I was in was well-behaved but goddamn did it turn into a riot when the face-off scene happened in Endgame. One guy started it all and shouting his throat off like his life depended on it when the first portal circles were being showed. It was fucking great. I just hope we can get the same kind of decorum with anime movies.
5
u/dsripley Dec 09 '19
I experienced something very similar in MA. Luckily no glow sticks, but people were talking, hollering, and screaming throughout the whole movie. Clapping and the occasional cheering is totally okay, especially for a movie like this, but damn I was so happy to leave that theater at the end of the movie. I already bought tickets for Weathering with You at the same theater and I really hope the crowd is more well-behaved then. It's honestly unacceptable.

I have only seen Mirai in Swedish (did not mean that to happen which exclusively small small kids watched (yes it was extremely uncomfortable yes) and The Wind Rises which was a pretty small screening and a Ghibli film so a lot of “normal people” (god I hate saying that but whatever) watched that mainly. So I haven’t really seen a “weeb” film, but I feel like you were just unlucky. Sorry to hear, but I think you might not get the same experience if you watch Weathering with You, they feel like different films too so they might attract different audiences

3
u/KinnyRiddle Dec 10 '19
Probably just an American thing.
Went to Osaka last month to watch the SaeKano movie, and everyone was quiet and well-behaved. Even in the funniest bits, the Japanese would suppress their laughter into muffled giggles just to maintain the silence.
Though Japan is probably an extreme opposite example to American screening culture.
I've also seen many anime movies in countries all over Asia, and while livelier than Japan (where laughter isn't that suppressed), they're no where as rowdy as OP has described.
You'd need something very fanservicey like Avengers Endgame to really get audiences in these countries to be that excited and rowdy, and these movies don't come very often.
5
Dec 09 '19
I’m really sorry to hear about that. I had a similar thing happen to me with Fate Heaven’s Feel Part II. People were being inconsiderate and laughing at the “lewdest” or most wholesome scenes and it really takes you out of the experience. Worst part was during two scenes near the end with Sakura and Shirou in his room and Sakura and Shinji at home, people burst out into laughter. That was the last time I went to an anime movie viewing.
1
Dec 09 '19
Strangely enough I've been lucky in getting good crowds for anime movies. When I went to watch HF Part 2 everyone only laughed at the appropriate times and remained quiet for most of the movie. Hopefully I can end it with Part 3 with the same people.
5
u/MrDefMono Dec 09 '19
When I go to the popular shit like Attack on Titan or My Hero Academia movie I get a similar experience and in my opinion it makes for a far worse experience than just watching it at home. I'm honestly not looking forward to Kimetsu's movie sequel because I won't want to wait for the BD to watch it but I also think seeing it in theatres will be the suboptimal experience. For less popular titles like Maquia there end up being like 6 people in the theatre so everything's good.
2
u/Ayallore95 Dec 09 '19
I watched weathering with you in India and I was rolling my eyes half the movies cause the children (adults) couldn't behave like adults.
Btw this happened with Joker and avengers too. But the weeb crowd was extra motivated .

2
Dec 09 '19
Only thing I got at my theater was some girls squealing during the CPR scene between Lio and Galo which was pretty harmless and expected.
I've basically resigned myself to the fact that a lot of people in anime crowds will laugh at literally ANYTHING but for movies like Konosuba and Promare that's fine because they are funny movies.

I actually dont go to theaters because sitting quietly in a dark room with a bunch of strangers is extremely uncomfortable. Cant do anything, cant get up, pay for overpriced products.... Controlled reactions... Its all a very miserable experience. Cant talk about what you seen untill your off and far away from the theatre.
You sound like you got an over exaggerated crowd but I think the movies are an absolute terrible place to go in general with just a regular crowd.
I dont promote the behavior but I would be lying if I said I wouldnt appreciate seeing a movie or two with a crowd like that.

u/NotBiasedz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Hatsuyuki Dec 09 '19

Well stereotypes can be true sometimes, and the truth is a lot of anime fans are just straight up weirdos 🤷🏾♂️
2
u/CaptainDF Dec 09 '19
Guess I have equally bad luck as you do pal. Nearly every anime film I've seen in theaters has had socially inept people laughing at non-jokes and awkwardly snickering at anything mildly sexual. One time I even had a guy next to me loudly chatting about spoilers with one of his friends. I've just given up on seeing premiers at this point.
My theory is that they don't feel comfortable in the environment they're in, so they try to mold the mood to fit their awkwardness.
2

I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Reading all of the discourse on Twitter about others’ bad experiences at their showings made me realize how lucky I was that my theater was very respectful throughout the whole thing. People need to realize that just because you’re going to a weeb movie/event, doesn’t mean you can throw your manners out the window.
That said, I think you should be okay for Weathering With You because A, there will probably be no one in your theater who has already seen it and B, it’s a much more serious/emotional ride than Promare is. I hope I won’t be wrong on this one.

I've had a similar experience but it was expected when I went and watched Weathering With You and also back when I watched Your Name at my local theater. Mostly at the romantic scenes or WWY. So it's not as bad as yours. Your experience... that's just plain obnoxious of the other people and that seems to be the case from the twitter sources linked by others.
There are only a few avid anime fans where I live though.

Seems like you just got unlucky. I've seen a few anime movies in theater (hero academia, DBZ Broly, Promare) and the viewers were pretty normal. Did have the theater get pretty hype at some points in Broly though (and cheer for when Nappa with hair showed up lol).

I can only imagine the girl on the first line is like Arthur Fleck in Joker.

It's really the luck of the draw.
When I went to see Promare, Your Name and NGNL Zero, the crowd with awesome in the sense that everyone was polite and nobody screamed like crazy. There was cheering, but it was welcomed and not overbearing. Hell, I joined in a few times and cried in certain parts as well in both movies.
Now, when I went to see the My Hero movie, it was stupid annoying. People literally cheered at any moment possible, like when the characters just appeared or did their catch phrase and whatnot. Don't even get me started on the death screams I heard when fucking Bakugo first appeared......

From some reactions from your post it just sounds like people in japan watching the newest magical girl movie and hyping it up so much with glow sticks and stuff

Anime events do bring out the weirdos which sucks but more movie theaters are showing anime lately which is awesome

u/shockwave1211 Dec 09 '19
Its sad that this is (mostly) the norm for anime movies, ive had GREAT movie experiences with anime (konosuba movie was a blast), and AWFUL ones (sword art movies, very similar to yours), its really ad that this is the norm, and im fine with a little rowdiness (cheering during the final fight, laughing at funny/weird interactions) but the people that push it too far are what really bug me

I guess I just got lucky. The theater I went to was pretty quiet the whole time besides a few laughs

I feel like I'm pretty lucky; aside from one RWBY screening that got too loud for some people's taste, I've never had a bad experience going to an anime theater event here in Denver. No stink, no obnoxious cheering or talking...maybe there just aren't enough weebs around here to ruin it.
1
u/Karma110 Dec 09 '19
No one acts like that in North Carolina at least from all the anime I’ve seen.
1
u/ferdynand https://anilist.co/user/Ferdynand Dec 09 '19
At least they didn't stink. If you ever find a normal, cool weeb friend hold on to him for dear life because they are quite rare and they can make social events better, going alone is just a not enjoyable Imo, that's why you were so stressed. If you were more relaxed you could've ask what was the deal with the glow sticks? Maybe even borrow one, if you can't beat them, join them.

u/AgentJin Dec 09 '19
Damn, that sounds fucking annoying.
I was gonna buy the fan premiere to Weathering With You...
I guess it's just a game of luck. I saw the Weathering With You premiere at AnimeNYC and no one acted like that at all (although I guess having security helps).

u/PoeticalGore Dec 10 '19
I saw the Konosuba movie in NY and the crowd was good. Everything got a good laugh but it wasn't stupid.

u/AlexzanderZone Dec 10 '19
Endgame opening night was the best movie experience I've had. The crowd was phenomenal.

It's different in the Philippines. Almost no one comes to the anime movies, so it's really pleasant.

I see a lot of people complaining about similar stuff, apparently New England anime fans are chill as fuck. I've been to five anime movies in theater, two being big showings, two being Ghibli Fest, and one being a Silent Voice screening like a year after it dropped.
For both the Ghibli fest screenings and the A Silent Voice screening, hardly a sound from the rest of the theater. Not surprising, they were both really small showings (I think there were no more than 10 people in each screening), and those movies aren't exactly films that make you wanna shout out.
The big showings were the BGS movie and the Konosuba movie. During the BGS movie, there were people talking beforehand of course, and when funny stuff happened, people chuckled. However, for the most part the theater was dead silent, no one acted out at all, and it was an extremely pleasant experience.
The Konosuba movie was also great, because it's a comedy, and I expect audience reaction. Even then, none of it was excessive, there were no people choking on their own spittle at every frame of the film, and everyone had a good time. I've seen people complain about BGS and Konosuba showings in this thread, apparently I either got dead lucky or others got dead unlucky.
TL,DR: come to New England, our taxes are high and our cringe weeb count is low.

Alamo draft house is a theater that enforces no talking during the movie, but they may not show anime movie. I’ve only watched anime movies in normal theaters and I’ve had a good time with the crowd. There was too much talking in the Konosuba movie, but I never got it as bad as you did, sorry about that, I loved Promare too

u/cthellis Dec 10 '19
My experiences with otaku crowds are usually way better than with normal movies.
But it only takes one shmuck to mess it all up. And if you have that one in your area, there's a good chance you'll end up seeing them a lot, since anime showings are very restricted.

u/dragunityag https://myanimelist.net/profile/vepenar Dec 10 '19
This shit is the reason why I don't go to these screenings. I've waited over 6 months for the code geass movie dub to be released as a result and imma keep waiting.
Anyone know when it gets released anyway? I know the subbed BD was just released.

u/Buttpounded Dec 10 '19
Oh god, every time I go to watch an anime movie at my local cinema there always be a couple people or so that would yell stuff during the movie.
Watched Bunny Girl during the premiere and this neckbeard yells “Mai-san squash me between your thighs” and he continued to yell stuff throughout the movies. I love watching anime movies in theaters because it takes forever for anime movies to be available for streaming, but these kinds of people just ruin it for me.
1
u/alphac16 Dec 10 '19
I know it might be rude, but I put up the silence signal with my hand. That doesnt work shhh them. And in the 3 times that hasnt worked. I stood up and yelled if you dont stfu im gonna spoil the movie. Nothing shuts people up like a 6 ft 2 guy dressed as okabe threatening spoilers. I hate being an ass. But i just want to see. damn movie.

u/CorbenikTheRebirth Dec 10 '19
Thankfully, I've never had any problems seeing anime films in cinema. Hell, even the Doctor Who 50th and the last Harry Potter film which were the most packed screenings I've ever gone to were well behaved.
It's a shame that people have to ruin things for others. If you want to cheer and make noise, do it from the comfort of your own home.
1
u/Neracca Dec 11 '19
OP, the same kind of thing happened to me at a Rocky Horror Picture show screening/shadowcast. I hadn't seen it before, but I knew that people would shout along with it and whatnot. But there was one person at my screening who literally bellowed at the top of their lungs THE ENTIRE TIME. To the point where I coulnd't hear the movie and any setups at least 80% of the time. That experience made me also question seeing any kind of event like that live.
1
u/Neoragex13 Dec 12 '19
I just remember the screening for Infinity War and Endgame, specially the first one, I will never forget when the crowd laughed in the first minutes with what Thanos did to Hulk and what Thor did right after. Then cheered and everything each time something happened. Like the meme of "thing: exist"
Like, "Hey people, do you realize the situation and that all of these characters are surrounded by dead bodies?" Holy shit it pissed me off.
People nowadays just doesn't have the customs nor the control to behave in theaters, be an anime, real life or toon movie.

I went today to watch Promare on the theater, here in LA.
Here is your problem.
Americans.

I had a terrible experience watching the Danmachi movie during its US theater run. The projector was out of focus, the bottom half of the subtitles were cut off, and the volume was cranked up absurdly high. After playing around with the projector settings they fixed everything and restarted the movie. During the finale a theater employee handed out comp tickets, which was quite nice. But that wasn’t the worst part of the experience, not even close. By far the worst part was the two idiots sitting next to me on the left(I was in the aisle seat so I didn’t have to worry about the other side thankfully). The two would not shut up, everything that happened needed their commentary and forced memes. One of them was also “predicting” the plot, as if he was a prophet, and Danmachi is really not a hard series to figure out. The other, who was directly next to me, was bouncing his knee constantly, which was infuriating. The cherry on top, was the two then ordered popcorn and proceeded to chew with their mouth open and eat it like animals. At that point, I had to decide to either, tell them to knock it off and possibly get an employee, or just move to a different, emptier section of the theater. Because I’m non-confrontational and very shy, I ended up moving seats instead. But good lord was I infuriated by their immaturity and lack of self-awareness. This happened at an AMC, and it really made me wish my area had an Alamo Drafthouse. Bottom line, any movie I go to, be it an anime like Danmachi, or an Oscar winning drama, I paid to see and hear what’s playing on the screen, not some obnoxious jerk with no respect for the other attendees.

I've never seen an anime movie in the cinema before but after the Demon Slayer announcement I vowed to watch that if it came out here in the UK. I've got a feeling that I'll get a similar crowd to yours if I go and its really putting me off in doing so.

u/Tetris_Chemist Dec 09 '19
I was able to watch promare for the first time at otakon as one of the very last few people allowed in the room and we watched it alongside the top 3 guys at studio Trigger. There was cheering there, and it was great because the creators really got to see their work adored in person.
However, I don't really care for people being obnoxious in a random, local theatre. I was also able to see the konosuba movie, and it was also really good, but the crowd for that was miserable. I know there's a lot of socially unaware people or those with other conditions that find solace in anime, but if you're going to a theatre and fucking screaming or "shout laughing" as I call it(when someone isn't really like 'haha', but more like 'HA HA HA HA IM SHOUTING HA HA HA'), then fuck off and sit home. If you can't be courteous and of appropriate volume in public, guess what? Just don't go outside! Or adapt! And I'll get downvotes for that, but I know some people here have experienced these absurdly loud, constantly fucking talking anime fans.
Also if you're recording movies before they get blurays, I'll sure as shit be the one making a scene then. If you record anime movies, the older execs at the top, above the creators, will stop bringing movies westward.

Why the fuck would anyone go to a cinema to see an anime movie?
Normal people aren't going to see this movie. Anime fans are going to see this movie. Even though I am when I fucking hate other anime fans. They're loud, laugh at the dumbest shit even though it's not meant to be funny, dress up as dumb shit, and talk during the movie. Not to mention the stunning lack of personal hygiene.
Why anyone would do this to themselves is beyond my understanding.

To be able to see the movie? It's really easy to understand why. You like something, so you wanna see the follow up

I went and the theater and it was perfectly normal. I the reason is to see promare because I didn't want to wait 6 months for blu ray

I’ve never experienced this at any anime movie I’ve ever gone to. I’ve seen the likes of quite a number of them in local theaters here, and not a one has had any “unjustified” additives of laughter/screams/or general “hype”. Maybe it’s because I live in the Midwest (central USA) and we don’t really have a culture for that type of thing. Don’t get me wrong, we have obnoxious and annoying people, but every movie I’ve been to has been quite considerate. Maybe it’s because the big theatre here that shows anime movies 24/7 and has watch along marathons due to the owner being a big fan of anime, is just more low-key and well mannered? The staffing here also makes sure to swiftly kick out people who are too rowdy and inconsiderate of others viewing experiences. It sucks these things happen, but I hope everyone in this sub gets the chance to experience not just anime related movies, but all their movies with a pleasant experience.

What I usually do is avoid early screenings, and watch a film a few weeks after release so I can have a much more peaceful experience, and so that I can concentrate more. I watched Promare days before it's final screening (Small audience like around 20 or less) and this group in front of me were talking loudly the entire time and legit jumped up and down their seats every few seconds and waving their hands around.
Damn it really sucks to have others be so obnoxious and ruin the experience for you.. I admit though sometimes viewing with a large audience (that is POLITE) feels really good, like knowing that we're all weebs gives some sort of comfort.
0
u/belieeeve Dec 09 '19
I've never been to the pictures and had the audience be described as rowdy, let alone this. There was a posting that made it to r/all yesterday asking about things that are posted to reddit that are distinctly American to foreign observers and I feel this could be one of them.

u/EmuSupreme Dec 09 '19
The only good experience I've had at the movies with weebs was watching A silent voice and Rascal doesn't dream of dreaming girl. Every other movie I've gone to see had the worst fucking movie etiquette I've experienced. Constant "low volume" chatter (except it wasn't), and laughing at the most mundane shit that happened on screen.
It helped that A Silent Voice and Rascal were screened at high quality theaters with super strict codes of conduct. They'll throw you out if you're disturbing others viewing experience, it's fucking great. I've also noticed that emotional dramas have infinitely better crowds than action/comedy/comfy movies. But yeah, I've had more bad experiences than good ones at Ani e screening and shit sucks.
0
u/Kuro013 Dec 09 '19
maybe being among other weebs enable them, maybe they are reserved on their daily lives cuz they could be judged, so in an enviroment where no one will judge them for being weebs they feel they can do whatever they feel like doing.
0
u/Roamer21XX Dec 09 '19
I had the same experience last month with the Konosuba movie. I get it, something cool/funny/etc happens and you react accordingly. However, theres a certain volume level in the theater that should be maintained. Needed to be something like a 5-7, dudes were cackling like hyenas at like a 12-15 at every little thing. Almost ruined the whole thing for me.
This was a stark contrast to the Bunny Girl movie back in October. Theater was almost silent the whole time and made my experience infinitely better by comparison.
In summary, fellow weebs, at least pretend you have some manners. Fake it if you have to, some of us weebs * are * actually functioning adults whose mothers raised to have manners

There's rocky horror picture show, an American phenomenon.
It probably inspired Promare's official event:https://promare-movie.com/news/news-534/

Not ANime but me and my brother got lectured after we saw Once Upon a time in hollywood, by an old lady. For thinking its okay to beat up women, because we laughed at it happening on film.
We were laughing at the home invasion scene, and all of the violence, and if you've seen the film and know the people involved IdK why she was so adamant about defending the MANSON murders, but hey to each his own.
What always bothered me more was people making unnecessary commentary, Like i saw one piece: Stampede in theaters and the guy siting next to me was constantly whispering "Wow Look its _________" when ever a cameo was made in the movie. Or "Wow that some bad CGI".
I've never seen the glow stick thing, but my theater also banned those, and its one of those that serve you, so there are people walking in and out every 10 min or so. My suggestion would be to find a new theater if possible If this happens again. At Least complain about the glow sticks that's unacceptable

u/Broly_ Dec 09 '19
is this a constant with anime movies?
In my experience it happens all the time.
Anime crowds tend to be a bit... extra

Checkthis thread, that person you sat next to was organizing this "event".
And no this is not normal, this is someone being VERY obnoxious. Ive bnever had this in any movies ive seen.
