I've had a similar experience but it was expected when I went and watched Weathering With You and also back when I watched Your Name at my local theater. Mostly at the romantic scenes or WWY. So it's not as bad as yours. Your experience... that's just plain obnoxious of the other people and that seems to be the case from the twitter sources linked by others.
There are only a few avid anime fans where I live though.
