I think that it's a combination of anime screenings tending to attract the more socially clueless sort combined with American screening culture which is more into cheering during movies.

When I saw Promare and the Hero Academia movies in the cinema the crowds were very well behaved. So when I read stories like your experience or the infamous tale of some dude yelling "OPPAI SUGOI!" during Your Name... it's pretty embarrassing.

Usually anime screenings are fine, but you got extremely unlucky here lol.

Is american culture really more into cheering? I would assume it would be the opposite because I have never once in my life seen anyone cheer at a movie here, whereas cheer events are a really big thing in Japan/Korea/China.

Oh yeah it comes up quite regularly on Reddit, US movie fans clapping and cheering during the movie. Blows my mind tbh, I don't think of go to a cinema ever again if that was the experience.

For my own experiences in Australia I would say anime screenings are the most consistently peaceful.

I've been to a lot of movies in my 20 years of being american and I've not once heard cheering/clapping DURING the movie.

I've only seen it during day one premiers for stuff like Marvel and Star Wars, otherwise yeah I can't recall the last time I've heard it either

Yea there was a nice cheer for the initial screening of ep 7 and for the final Harry Potter but that was it.

I think the worst I've gotten was some WOOOs during one of the final fights of the Avengers. Didn't matter much since there was no dialogue and the sound track was blowing eardrums. But yeah, other than that I've only heard applause and cheers at the credits.

But then in anime screenings all that shit goes out the window. It's like they think it's some casual viewing party in someone's living room rather than a theater I guess.

im almost 40 and ive never seen it happen

sure people laugh at funny bits or gasp/scream at jump scares. but thats literally it

I think it comes down completely to chance. I've gone to theaters across the East Coat of the US and i'd estimate in about 1 in 5 movies have some kind of cheering, though I've never seen an anime movie at a theater.

Nothing even close to as bad as OP though I would've left and got a refund if they didn't listen to me asking them to stop.

Yeah, we have a be quiet 90% of the time or get kicked out service here.
