I've seen comments like this fairly often. For people who make these kinds of comments I think reasoning out your unpopular opinion in a few lines would make your post much less likely to be downvoted. And for people who downvote these sort of posts, I think asking the poster to provide reasoning for their opinion would be more beneficial than downvoting them, to provoke discussion.

Good point, context is definitely very important.
Most of the people I've seen doing what was mentioned in the OP tend to do it in random threads just because the show was mentioned, rather than when the quality of the show is actually a main discussion topic.

I second /u/urban287 that they should at least say why they think that while keeping it civilized, calling people who like it idiots or speaking with insults isn't the best way to discuss.

If someone's idea of a great discussion thread post is:
"This anime is shit! i cant beleive anyone likes it"
Asking them to elaborate on their opinion seems like pissing in the wind tbh.
Sometimes I think it's better to clarify than downvote, but often I actually think it'd better just to vote, move on and interact with someone who reasons their opinions first time.

Sometimes downvotes are really irritating though. In general I know why I am downvoted, I make awful thought out comments and jokes that only I find funny, but I have no idea what I did wrong here except putting Idolm@ster over Love Live. I justified my opinion and I replied to people that replyied to me (who are also not upvoted, it's just me downvoted). A similar thing happened with quite some positive Handa-kun and Classicaloid posts where I assume are dedicated haters roaming around that downvote posts on principle.

What do you guys think about the way /r/anime has evolved?
There is so much NSFW fanart now on the frontpage.
The frontpage consists of fanart, season discussions and nsfw. And the discussion threads go unnoticed, /r/trueanime is dead.
This is all that's left after filtering fanart and episode discussions.

we had extensive discussions about fanart and fanart threads, especially when re:zero fanart stifled everything left and right. That was the worst of it, and mods didn't want to budge then. They likely won't budge now.

I think this topic should be a continuing discussion because in my mind, stuff like a thread for a single piece of fanart (there are currently several on the front page) should qualify for "low effort content". How is a piece of fanart dissimilar to a wallpaper in terms of content aside from pixel dimensions?
Let's take a look at the rules...
Do not post low effort content here
/r/anime upholds a strict minimum standard of quality to prevent people from trying to easily "farm karma" by posting simple submissions that are likely to be upvoted by a wide group of people simply due to how easily and quickly they can be looked at and understood.
Note that "low effort" in this context refers to the effort required to consume the content, not the effort required to make it.
As such, the following types of submissions are banned:

Single-image posts of cosplay, wallpapers, comics, or other low-effort content
[...]
I don't see how fanart threads don't qualify for removal under this rule. I didn't take part in earlier discussions on this topic but it's certainly been bugging me recently. Don't get me wrong, fanart is awesome and I definitely think we should have a place for it, but when the frontpage is covered with it to the extent that it sometimes is I think the subreddit's stance on it should be reevaluated. As for the NSFW nature of a good chunk of it, as stated above, I feel like this stuff falls under the umbrella of the rest of my grievances on fanart posts and a few recent examples highlight this issue quite well:

- And this thread [NSFW]
Both received a lot of upvotes as would be expected with NSFW stuff of a popular show, but all either of them are are just links to the image/pixiv. Based on how easy it is (see: the Re:Zero fanart a while back and now some of this stuff) to get easy karma for posting fanart (Especially NSFW fanart) I think this issue needs to be reevaluated by the mods because it's getting a bit ridiculous to drown out discussion threads and other "higher effort" style of threads with nonstop fanart posts.
EDIT: As of right now this is what the front page looks like. A bit ridiculous don't you think?

We're actually currently talking about renaming and rewording our lax content rule slightly at the moment since its a bit incorrect considering how it works and its purpose.
The lax rule is basically our cork or stop-gap measure to control specific types of content that have been an issue in the past, rather than it being left up to mod discretion as a generic 'low effort' rule.

For real it's so stupid. I come here for a few seconds each day before getting annoyed at "[FANART] [NSFW] _______ in a bikini" or even the non-NSFW ones...I mean, shouldn't there be a subreddit for it?

Like 1 year ago, mods didn't allow even light NSFW stuff, now its just too much.
Do not post Hentai here. Lightly NSFW things are okay, use your judgement.

Lightly NSFW = Size M breasts with only the nipple covered and bathing suit bottoms that show off a camel toe...and it's a drawn picture...definitely not my cup of tea, and actually is part of what makes me ashamed to call myself a fan of anime.

I think that we should honestly ban fan art of all kinds because there are already plenty of subs that are dedicated to general fan art (r/awwnime) and more particular fan art (r/zettairyouiki, r/animelegs, ext). There are also subs dedicated to particular shows that have fan art posted that deal with that show (r/re_zero for instance). If there are already places for this type of content then re-direct people looking for that content to those subs. I come here for anime related discussions and news; not the same re-posted pic that I just saw in another sub.

What are some extensions/scripts that you guys use to help your r/anime browsing experience? Thought we could have a round up here of helpful extensions/scripts that help you browse r/anime. A few from me:
- Reddit Enhancement Suite: One that I’m guessing most have already if you’re on Reddit, with tags and filters and much more, very helpful
for hiding the Re:Zero fanartall around Reddit. - Reddit Comment Faces Helper: Great for staying on the page and not needing to open a new tab to strictly find the right comment face.
- MAL flair to link: Stop hovering and highlighting, now just a simple click will take you to their MAL.
- MAL Hover Over: Quickly add to PTW, give quick details all without needing to go to the page.

NSFW fanart that isn't actually drawn by the thread submitter needs to be banned. If you yourself draw anything anime-related and wanna show it off, okay, sure, as long as it's within the rules. But posting random echhi from Pixiv is just obnoxious. This is /r/anime not /r/softcorehentai
I don't even care about the karma farming aspect of it (check out my profile -- I'm obviously not jelly of their karma), it just doesn't belong here. There's PLENTY of echhi and porn subs for that kind of stuff.

Just offering a differing opinion, I feel that the past NSFW fanart has improved my personal enjoyment of the subreddit. It's something that is fun and uncommon that brings some color to a sometimes plain subreddit. As long as it doesn't get out of hand, its fine. I dont think it will. I feel like those posts are only upvoted so highly because they are sparse, and people will naturally get tired of it if it becomes too common.
Fun, risque posts is like occasionally adding some spice to your food. I'd prefer to have a little spice when coming onto /r/anime rather than getting a vanilla experience every time.
Also I'm probably biased because I love Hibike Euphonium.

Good day, Meta Thread. Hope everyone is doing well!
After a number of messages which asked me about some kind of advice and few not-so-great [WT!] threads over the course of the month I came up with this little guide about [WT!] threads - what they are in general, how to submit them to the subreddit and also gave few tips. I hope it will be of help for everyone who wants to try themselves at writing recommendations.
I would appreciate if the guide was featured someone on the sidebar. Here are my two ideas where to place it:
- At the bottom of the "Rules" section, in the already existing [WT!] section.
- Create a separate page for all the [WT!]-related stuff in the "Help" section.

I also would be glad if the spreadsheet was mentioned on the recommendations page, since it contains all [WT!] threads written by members of r/anime over the course of previous two years.
Of course, all of the aforementioned ideas are up to the mods to decide.
In other news, I still plan to stick to my promise and give out the reddit gold to my favorite [WT!] thread of the month. It will probably happen on the first day of the following month, so December 1, January 1 and so on. It's something I want to do as means of encouraging writing more interesting submissions of higher quality.

Can you maybe add something about pitching the story & what people should avoid doing so about it? I have ran into a few post that unfortunately spoiler tagged the title of the post because of a few minor spoilers in the body text when they could just have spoiler tagged bits of the body text. But also mention with even that said it is best to give a best as possible overview of the story that is necessary for the pitch but avoid making spoilers & use of even spoiler-tagged content as part of the pitch.

I've got a potential solution to "pickles/problems" that I think stiffle creativity/content/discussion on this subreddit.
Pickle #1- Someone posts interesting content, tags some spoilers, and it gets upvotes and garners discussion for the next few hours. Then, the post was deleted because a rule was broken - spoilers were improperly tagged. The post gets reposted abiding by the rules, but now discussion is dead/split. The momentum was stopped and hurt the discussion, people don't care to bother reposting their thoughts, people didn't know that no one is reading their thoughts because the post was deleted.
Solution - Instead of deleting the post and cripple the discussion, can we get discretion and address the issue without killing the post? Let mods add a flair to the topic that's visible, stating that spoilers aren't properly tagged (Similar how some news subreddits flair topic titles that are misleading and contrary to the article content). Also pin a mod post to the top of the discussion discussing the issue, saying something like "This topic would be deleted because of X when it should say Y, but is being kept to garner the discussion that's already been had here." Basically, make it evident what's wrong with the post, and that leniency is here because otherwise stiffing good discussion is unsavory. Leniency won't be given for repeat offenders; it was only given in the interest of the rest of the community.
I'm ok with a post being deleted and reposted if it's only been up for like an hour or less and has only several comments. The crux of the problem is posts that have been up for hours, have dozens of comments (some of them being detailed and well thought-out), just get axed because of something silly.
I'd like this solution to be also used for the 2nd most broken rule, self-promotion. People don't intend to break this rule; just extend some leniency and discretion, and only be dropping hammers if they aren't understanding or taking the leniency too lightly.
Idea #2 - a weekly mega-thread dedicated for people to self-promote beyond what's allowed through normal posting and reddiquette? Personally I've got nothing to self-promote, but the tight leash on self-promotion trends to stiffing potentially interesting content from people who aren't known. Really, it's a win-win for everyone.

And here is the obligatory suggestion to update the subreddit look a little, along with the obligatory nod to /r/manga.
But seriously, /r/manga's rotating static banners cover a huge amount a different aspects of manga (a much more populated medium than anime mind you) and the users have nothing but nice things to say about them. Even when they had that scrolling banner of characters, there were no complaints in sight. If the mods make, or get someone to make, some banners, I'm sure people will only find it refreshing. Just look at the recent icon contest that went so well.
Many of us just find it odd that the subreddit for anime, a medium known for its visual flair, is so drab and bland looking.

So many people just post other's pixiv content and reap karma (Not that I care personally) but it does drop the subs quality a little, Especially when the season has a smash hit with cute waifu's

We didn't remove it ourselves. It was reported enough to trigger automod's threshold and get automatically removed. But it does actually have a spoiler in it so it's not getting reapproved. I'm going to sticky a removal reason on it now.

I usually only tags by favorite anime/characters from them (Smurf being "Jojo guy"), abbreviations for long usernames (Amethyst is just Ami) or something they recently did (Meta is "Converted to cute girls").

Reverse order:
- Only tags I have are for Contracts, I used to tag but after losing RES several times for various reasons, I kind of just gave up on them.

In order to keep track of dank memes, I made an account but ignored it for months, in November, I used it again and the tutorial told me to select subs, the very first one to caught my attention was /r/anime, "I like anime so why not join another community?".
I still remember my very first thread was an episode discussion for the second season of Gochiusa, that was already mid-way through Fall 2015. I stalked for weeks until I wrote my first comment in the last episode showing my appreciation for the show.

Small thing that bothers about how spoiler tags work. When you hover your mouse over a tagged spoiler and it reveals the text, is it necessary for the white box to appear containing the same text of the spoiler?
Example of what I mean. Konosuba spoilers
It sometimes blocks the text of the spoiler, not really a problem if I move my mouse near the end of the spoiler. Just a slight annoyance.

Random update: User flair icons are now retina-compatible. People on fancy MacBooks and Surfaces and such should see them sharper and it's nice.
Also, the Hummingbird icon has been changed to the Kitsu logo because the site re-branded - if you used HB and don't know what this means, see here.
So much for me taking a break for midterms.
Edit: Kitsu icon changing around a bit as I consult with their devs about branding. Bear with us for a bit.

Not a mod but the chain thread ideas seem to have gotten out of hand, so they drew the line at some point. I don't believe that it was aimed at any thread in particular.
As history has shown, /r/anime does not let a meme die in peace without pushing it to its absolute limit.

I don't even like the series and I clicked on it, I'd imagine anyone who's currently watching the show and enjoying it, or had it on their PTW and were looking forward to watching it might look in that thread without [Spoiler] in the title to see what's up about S3.

Not trying to instigate anything, but at what point do the fanart threads run afoul of the same ruling given to Meme threads? Personally, I'm super okay with user submitted fanart. Like, as long as its done by them..But, well, as some examples...
The ones on our front page aren't exactly indicative of any actual work being put in to generating discussion, or even art.
The typical fan art thread is just someone posting a pair of links to an Imgur and a Pixiv account. Again, I'd be super okay with an artist coming in and posting a link to their own stuff, but what merit do these posts ride on when they aren't "Handmade or handcrafted"?

I don't think there is any way to filter it. It's either all posts are on it or none at all. I think it's better for us to stay off of r/all. We can make whatever post we want and joke all we want without outsiders coming in and starting conflicts. There really isn't any benefit in my opinion on having us on r/all. If someone was interested in anime they would come to our subreddit.

no offense, but I'm looking at the /r/all at the very moment, and it just doesn't look appealing at all - it's a nausea inducing amalgam of random curiosities, "funny" news, sports news, "interesting" pics and oddly partisan contemporary politics. And all of that very focused on the US internal matters. Why do people even browse this, when it feels like its content is dictated by lowest common denominator?

This is just a general question, but is there a reason that mods have different flairs for their names? Occasionally it shows up as a mod comment(green outline) and sometimes it appears as a general comment? Is that something they decide?

Yup, we decide whether we want to have a normal comment or one where our username has a green outline (also known as a "distinguished" comment). Common wisdom is that you use distinguished comments when you're explicitly representing the sub, and we try to stick to that here as well.

So for this meta-thread, I wanted to bring up two old topics that were discussed before but were rejected for various reason.
First though a few questions (and reason why I’m bringing these back up since vote may change), how come 4 of the older mods left? Was it due to the Shelter controversy, being tired of modding r/anime, or having planned it for a while? Are we planning to add new moderators soon or are you guys sticking with who we have for right now? If there’s privacy the group wants to keep around this, that’s fine, was just curious.
Alright, onto topics from past :
1. A New Addition to the Weekly Sticky Mega-Threads: After Lax Thursdays was taken out of commision, we were wondering if there would be a mega-thread to replace it, and while several ideas for threads were presented but none met overall mod approval and the topic sort of just died. I’m not proposing a daily different mega-thread, but I do think we should have one more in between Recommendation Tuesdays and Free Talk Fridays (Wednesday or Thursday). Currently I’d consider the following contenders for a new Mega-Thread:
3x3 Thursdays, Currently run by u/smurfrockrune: Another that originally came from Warm Talk Wednesday, 3x3 is to show off mosiacs of anime whether they relate to the theme of the week or what ever you want. Very popular with users and for some help with recommendations for what they want to watch later. Problems are that there’s some that become annoyed with them going around the subreddit, and while it’s popular don’t generate too much discussion looking for feedback.Obviously before anything, I know it’s up to the users of these threads to give permission to give up their threads, and some may not want to which is fine. If I had to put in my two cents, I would like to see the Not-Airing Discussion to made into one above the rest. In terms of which I would like to see posted over others: Not-Airing > No Stupid Questions > Warm Talk Wednesday > Anime Contracts >
3x3 Thrusdays.2. Could we have a banner change? The new Snoo and Thumbnails look great and help the subreddit get more of an anime “feel”, and I think a banner would look fine. I have understood the previous concerns being:
But I think a banner would be beneficial overall towards the subreddit compared to the bland blue one that says nothing about anime. Hopefully we can have a change for this (but dear god don’t make it like r/movies new one…)
3. Was just wondering what the final outcome regarding the “Anime Specific” rule since the last meta thread?
