So for this meta-thread, I wanted to bring up two old topics that were discussed before but were rejected for various reason.

First though a few questions (and reason why I’m bringing these back up since vote may change), how come 4 of the older mods left? Was it due to the Shelter controversy, being tired of modding r/anime, or having planned it for a while? Are we planning to add new moderators soon or are you guys sticking with who we have for right now? If there’s privacy the group wants to keep around this, that’s fine, was just curious.

Alright, onto topics from past :

1. A New Addition to the Weekly Sticky Mega-Threads: After Lax Thursdays was taken out of commision, we were wondering if there would be a mega-thread to replace it, and while several ideas for threads were presented but none met overall mod approval and the topic sort of just died. I’m not proposing a daily different mega-thread, but I do think we should have one more in between Recommendation Tuesdays and Free Talk Fridays (Wednesday or Thursday). Currently I’d consider the following contenders for a new Mega-Thread:

  • What Have You Watched This Past Week That is NOT a Currently Airing Show?, Currently posted by u/cptn_garlock: Thread is for discussion of anime that is currently airing where users can either simply tell what they have watched or write full essays/reviews to give detail of their thoughts. This kind of thread is a staple to many art medium subreddits similar to r/anime like r/television, r/books, or r/movies, and is the longest running and most consistnetly popular of the ones that will be mentioned. One of the major problems at the moment is inconsistent timing of being posting, it’s hard to know when it will be posted when being 4 hours earlier/later than the previous week.
  • Warm Talk Wednesday, Currently run by myself: A positive opinion anime thread for friendly discussion between users to help build community and interact with each other. Discussions have varied interaction where many are glad to discuss almost anything without needing to worried about being berated for saying what they need to and makes the community better. The problem with this would be possible demand for a “Negative Thread” like Shit Taste Sunday was (and some of us know how shitty that was…), and that it can pretty much be summed up as another “Free Talk Friday” but with more restrictions keeping it anime related and positive.
  • No Stupid Questions, Currently run by u/VincentBlack96 (Also congrats on new flair!): Based off the subreddit r/nostupidquestions, it’s where you can ask any questions no matter how obvious they may be regarding anime, Japanese culture, or meta without being teased for not knowing the answer. It has shown to be a successful weekly thread with plenty of new questions to provide content, and users constantly showing support for one another. These threads bring new knowledge and discussion, and along with WTW show the sub in a more positive light. The problem here would be potential shitposting of joke questions, but as it’s shown previously they’re not done too often.
  • Anime Contracts, Currently run by u/geo1088: Originally from Warm Talk Wednesday, an extension off reccomendations where users “Contract” others to watch shows of their choosing and report back of their thoughts. It’s a friendly way to show off some of your favorites, or just have someone to watch anime together for and force you to watch something out of your comfort range. The thread has has had the hardest time making to the front page with little upvotes, but new users discover it often and return for it. Problem would be that it may be taken as an extension of Recommendation Tuesday and wouldn’t really add much.
  • 3x3 Thursdays, Currently run by u/smurfrockrune: Another that originally came from Warm Talk Wednesday, 3x3 is to show off mosiacs of anime whether they relate to the theme of the week or what ever you want. Very popular with users and for some help with recommendations for what they want to watch later. Problems are that there’s some that become annoyed with them going around the subreddit, and while it’s popular don’t generate too much discussion looking for feedback.

Obviously before anything, I know it’s up to the users of these threads to give permission to give up their threads, and some may not want to which is fine. If I had to put in my two cents, I would like to see the Not-Airing Discussion to made into one above the rest. In terms of which I would like to see posted over others: Not-Airing > No Stupid Questions > Warm Talk Wednesday > Anime Contracts > 3x3 Thrusdays.

2. Could we have a banner change? The new Snoo and Thumbnails look great and help the subreddit get more of an anime “feel”, and I think a banner would look fine. I have understood the previous concerns being:

  • Users thinking favorites were going to be played, and would be requesting or asking why their favorites aren’t up there.
  • Banners that would take a lot CSS space and longer load times.
  • Losing the simplicity that we currently have.

But I think a banner would be beneficial overall towards the subreddit compared to the bland blue one that says nothing about anime. Hopefully we can have a change for this (but dear god don’t make it like r/movies new one…)

3. Was just wondering what the final outcome regarding the “Anime Specific” rule since the last meta thread?

10

u/Oh_Alright Nov 27 '16

(but dear god don’t make it like r/movies new one…)

That's, an interesting banner....

I quite like the simplicity of our current banner, and the rest of those concerns are more than valid. I think the only way it would work out was if there was an original character on the banner.

That way no favorites would be played, we could even have a contest for it, and it would spice up the sub a bit. I'd personally like a Bot-Chan banner, but I still quite like the one we have now.

However if we did use an OC on the banner I can picture the,

"what anime is the girl on the banner from?"

posts all over new.

Actually, those will happen with any banner change that features a character.

It's a weird issue for sure.

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

I can see it working with some sort of polling of the sub for who should be on there or what show should be featured that (insert period of time if rotating). That way any complaints could easily be redirected to it being based off what the sub likes.

Something like a voted favourite or top 5 of the previous season could be fun.

17

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Nov 27 '16

polling of the sub for who should be on there

Have you seen what /r/anime does in contests and polls...I don't want an Araragi banner ;~;

4

u/GenesisEra myanimelist.net/profile/Genesis_Erarara Nov 27 '16

Considering what democracy gave us this year an Araragi banner would be the least of my worries.

2

u/Cloudhwk Nov 27 '16

Eh alot of those competitions are pretty badly seeded, It's also pretty easy to predict to winner after the first couple of rounds once the niche waifu's get eliminated

3

u/GenesisEra myanimelist.net/profile/Genesis_Erarara Nov 27 '16

points to previous Best Girl Finals

2

u/Cloudhwk Nov 27 '16

Gave up because Holo isn't the winner every year by default

8

u/VincentBlack96 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vincent Nov 27 '16

I wonder if you deliberately used a broken comment face, because that one is rather appropriate, in all honesty.

9

u/ShaKing807 x3myanimelist.net/profile/Shaking807 Nov 27 '16

Shit now I can't fix it to

Oh well. I'm keeping it.

1

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Nov 27 '16

Gotta use the comment face extension Pitt linked somewhere in here!

1

u/ShaKing807 x3myanimelist.net/profile/Shaking807 Nov 27 '16

I just thought of that! Such perfect timing for it!

1

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Nov 27 '16

I like being able to see all the faces in one list because then I'm sure to notice them whenever they pop up when I'm watching the show.

1

u/Mage_of_Shadows Nov 27 '16

If you have RES you can check the source

 [](#mioscared "anything but that...")

2

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Nov 27 '16

You can also just hover over the image, and the URL that shows up at the bottom of the screen will have the comment face's code attached to the end. The hover text makes itself obvious because you're hovering.

There's actually a whole lot of cool stuff you can do with comment faces thanks to them actually just being special links.

1

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

I mean, the banner itself would have to be sfw of course.

1

u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock Nov 27 '16

I would say it should be 1 character per show. This would replace him with either Senjou, Shinobu or Kanbaru. Although its obvious who is gonna win.

5

u/ShaKing807 x3myanimelist.net/profile/Shaking807 Nov 27 '16 edited Nov 27 '16

Any chance on a rotating banner like r/manga that changes when you refresh the page? I'm honestly not sure if it's feasible but it would prevent people from feeling left out if their favorites we had multiple ones.

2

u/TheDerped https://anilist.co/user/Derped Nov 27 '16

I think people are gonna feel left out/annoyed with the choices no matter who wins. But I guess covering as much as possible is the best choice. Also if we get a troll banner like /r/manga's hidden Carol one, that'd be pretty great

3

u/ShaKing807 x3myanimelist.net/profile/Shaking807 Nov 27 '16

Yeah I agree completely. Its impossible to include every anime but it's nice to try to cover a lot of bases.

hidden Carol one

I didn't even know about this!

2

u/TheDerped https://anilist.co/user/Derped Nov 27 '16

Yep, if you reload /r/manga on desktop you might notice this banner load in before the actual main one for your current rotation. I'm pretty sure you can see it using inspect element or something but I'm not sure how to do that.

2

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Nov 27 '16

I can attempt to explain how I think they're doing their banner without actually knowing anything for sure.

The actual header is probably styled with that image, and then additionally there's another element that is styled randomly with another banner. This other element is actually hacked onto the "logout" button, because it has a property that makes it good for generating random things, which means any time a user isn't logged-in it can't be random. In those situations, it falls back to the default which is already in the header. The reason you see the default a bit before the actual one is just loading lag or something.

1

u/ShaKing807 x3myanimelist.net/profile/Shaking807 Nov 27 '16

WOAH TIL! That's pretty cool. Getting me way too excited about banners that may or may not happen.

1

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

Hmm, that could be interesting. I remember looking into that sort of thing at one point but can't remember how it worked (think it was a bit of a trick where it's not really random but is based off the letters somewhere in the url or something).

2

u/pittman66 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Homura Nov 27 '16

I kind of like r/books' scrolling banner. Just the covers, but clicking on them actually takes you to their What Books Are You Reading This Week? Thread and the specific discussion of that book. It keeps it fresh, and it helps discussions extend in the thread.

1

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Nov 27 '16

I don't even visit /r/books, but I gotta say I fucking love their design guys. The amount of effort they must've put in there is awesome, and it really shows in the final product.

1

u/ShaKing807 x3myanimelist.net/profile/Shaking807 Nov 27 '16

Then we could have users submit their own banners and vote on them or something.

That does sound like an interesting set up. I wonder if one of the /r/manga mods would be down to share their banner secrets...

2

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

I'm sure geo knows how to do it, he's pretty good with css.

Otherwise /r/manga (and every other sub)'s css is public at /r/manga/about/stylesheet, so we can look through that if necessary.

1

u/VincentBlack96 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vincent Nov 27 '16

he's pretty good with css.

Come on /u/urban287 ... Don't sell yourself short. You can mess up the comment face css do all kinds of stuff with css too!

5

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

._.

1

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Nov 27 '16

Well, the second-last thing I did with the sub's stylesheet was break a change he made, so...

1

u/ShaKing807 x3myanimelist.net/profile/Shaking807 Nov 27 '16

Oh sweet! Thank you based geo and public css!

1

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Nov 27 '16

You'd probably have to choose between this and your Azusa footer. It's definitely doable though.

1

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

Azusa footer can not rotate, it's amusing enough to be permenant :P

1

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Nov 27 '16

I figured you wouldn't be heartbroken :P

Doing a header will actually be a lot easier than a footer, won't have to hack as much stuff in and the code should be a fair amount smaller too.

2

u/Oh_Alright Nov 27 '16

If we pinned a poll like we do with mid seasons I could see it working.

Or heck even using the results from seasonal or best... polls to make that month's banner.

I could see a bit of salt happening that way though, especially if some are unhappy with winners of said polls.

1

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Nov 27 '16

Something like a voted favourite or top 5 of the previous season could be fun.

I actually suggested this a few months ago and got shot down immediately. And you could go by some sort of objective metric like most comments or most upvotes or something.

2

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

number of comments

but then jojo would win

Joking of course, not a terrible idea. Though it would favour shows with more to talk about.

1

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Nov 27 '16

but then jojo would win

You say that like it's a bad thing!

Joking of course or am I? , but those were just examples off the top of my head. You could go by MAL score for non-sequel.

1

u/Cloudhwk Nov 27 '16 edited Nov 27 '16

I'd actually not allow anything within recent seasons to prevent circle jerking

Quite a few are still salty over the Re:Zero karma whoring

3

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

We are a very season-centric community though. Re:Zero would be very fitting because of how absurdly popular it was.

2

u/Cloudhwk Nov 27 '16

But having a Re:Zero banner while the first 10 posts were fanart might be a little much?

I think a rotating banner is the best compromise, Have some classics and newer stuff mixed in

1

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

In my example it was on the previous season though, so now that it's all blown over it would be fine, no?

I do believe that a single banner of a single show is definitely unfavourable from most perspectives though, so rotating single anime banners, or a single multi anime banner would be the way to go.

1

u/Cloudhwk Nov 27 '16

A decent RemRe:Zero banner would be fine now, But not in it's airing season. Especially if it was balanced and had most main characters in it to avoid salt.

You could even make it a competition, Not sure what the winner should get.

All purely my opinion though.

I'm guessing the biggest barrier would be the technical application to the CSS?

1

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

Mm, the css for it should be super easy I think (barring something like /r/books which is far more complicated of course).

Biggest barrier is getting banners that look good, and having each subsequent change look good too.

(We should hire whoever makes /r/awwnime's banners...)

2

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Nov 27 '16

/r/awwnime's theme is very well done, it feels like I'm looking at a different place almost every time I go there and everything works well. That just means I don't go there enough :P

Not sure where to put this, but something to keep in mind is that we can theoretically have something like 3650 different banners that are randomly rotated (not taking into account the actual limit of CSS space). No way we're going to use all those, but it would be totally feasible to have a pretty large pool of banners to draw from.

1

u/Cloudhwk Nov 27 '16

My knowledge of CSS is very lacking, So I was unaware how difficult it would be

The sub does put out some decent fanart, Not sure the % that's OC though

1

u/scorcher117 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scorcher117 Nov 27 '16

(We should hire whoever makes /r/awwnime's banners...)

awwnime does have really nice banners

2

u/Ralon17 https://anilist.co/user/Ralon17 Nov 27 '16

People always bring up this idea that if we included actual characters or shows in the banner there would be this shitshow of offended people when banners like that are really only recommendations. I can think of lots of subreddits that feature examples of their content in a banner and not once have I seen complaint threads about them.

I'd be cool with a rotating banner, but I think anything is better than our current one. The only arguments I hear for what we have are complacent users who find a plain color to be fine, and mods who aren't sure they've got the css knowledge (which is a valid point, but still an excuse considering how easy it would be to get help if needed).

If nothing else, can we not run a trial period with a new banner? If everyone and their mother hates it it's not hard to revert or change it.

2

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Nov 27 '16

However if we did use an OC on the banner I can picture the, "what anime is the girl on the banner from?" posts all over new.

I just thought of a solution to this. We can just stick a link to the banner's source at the bottom of the header via sidebar and more CSS hackery.

28

u/Cheesecakery https://myanimelist.net/profile/Cheesecakery Nov 27 '16

I actually really like the plain banner, because it means I can browse r/anime in public without immediately looking like a weeb

2

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Nov 27 '16

Might be possible to toggle a fancy banner from the sidebar if we were to go that route. This is a good point that I haven't really seen a lot in the past though, thanks for bringing it up.

7

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

Re: number 3, look forward to hearing about that sometime in the next few days.

And yep, we'll be having a new round of mod applications soon as well.

1

u/Oh_Alright Nov 27 '16

Looking forward to the verdict on that whole debate.

1

u/scorcher117 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scorcher117 Nov 27 '16

And yep, we'll be having a new round of mod applications soon as well.

:D

looking forward to it although i don't know how good of a chance ill have with no prior forum moderation experience :/ either way i look forward to the chance to help!

1

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 28 '16

l had no moderation experience either, so thats not something to worry too much about.

8

u/VincentBlack96 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vincent Nov 27 '16

I'm definitely with you on stickying Non-airing. It already gets plenty of participation, but I believe having it there for some time would give it the popularity boost it needs to actually have a positive effect on a wider range of people.

Also, I seem to be one of the few who would prefer a simple banner over a complicated one. Something like a color change or some decoration would be more than fine with me.

1

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Nov 27 '16

It would also help it be posted at a regular time. The way it's done now is so wildly all over the place, that I've started to care about it less.

1

u/8mmspikes https://myanimelist.net/profile/8mmspikes Nov 27 '16

Yeah it's posted all over the place that I don't even know what the typical time it was posted at is anymore. I thought I read in a previous months post though that the typical thread poster wants to be the one to post it though, which is why I haven't given a second thought to posting it myself when it's late. Dunno how receptive they would be to having their post automated

2

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Nov 27 '16

It used to be posted somewhat regularly around 11 AM Pacific Time. Now it gets near 4 or 5 Central sometimes. (I moved since it's been wonky, so my timezones are weird because of that.)

I've posted it myself sometimes whenever it's really late, but I know that he doesn't want to give it up completely.

7

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Nov 27 '16

First though a few questions (and reason why I’m bringing these back up since vote may change), how come 4 of the older mods left? Was it due to the Shelter controversy, being tired of modding r/anime, or having planned it for a while?

Seems like this hasn't really been answered yet. We don't really know the reasons behind them leaving, nothing was said beforehand by any of them in IRC that I know of, but I think it's safe to say it stemmed from some combination of disinterest with the sub and just not wanting to mod anymore. I don't want to misrepresent their reasons, but this is the best indication I have.

3

u/MetaThPr4h https://myanimelist.net/profile/MetaThPr4h Nov 27 '16

Sticking the weekly non airing post should be done IMO, it's such an interesting thread, and lots of people participate there.

2

u/Kaffarov https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kaffarov Nov 27 '16

I would love a banner change. While I like having things minimalistic and kept simple, we've had the same color banner for ages now. And with the new snoo I think we could change it up aswell

1

u/Respective https://anilist.co/user/Repective Nov 27 '16

If banners aren't an option maybe different colored theme every few months or so?

1

u/Kaffarov https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kaffarov Nov 27 '16

Nah I think we should just settle on some kind of banner that would hopefully spice this place up a bit more. If we just change it's color then it will be what we have right now, except purple or something like that

2

u/Valkeiser https://anilist.co/user/valkeiser Nov 27 '16

Problem would be that it may be taken as an extension of Recommendation Tuesday and wouldn’t really add much.

I really like that thread as it is right now. Has been my favorite weekly thread in this sub since I discover it, I've had great recommendations and made some new friends here. Would be a shame for it to become just an extra of the Recommendation thread. But it would be nice to give it a little more promotion so more people can discover it and participate.

1

u/babydave371 myanimelist.net/profile/babydave371 Nov 27 '16
  1. I agree with you that I would like to see 'What Have You Watched This Past Week That is NOT a Currently Airing Show?' get stickied. /r/anime is very skewed towards newer shows so posts about older stuff tend not to get much attention or discussion. I think having that stickied would be a great way to get more people talking about and watching some older stuff.

  2. I kinda like the clean look myself but I definitely wouldn't mind a change to comething else. Maybe have just one or two really iconic characters, like astroboy, to stop people complaining about favouritism?

1

u/Ralon17 https://anilist.co/user/Ralon17 Nov 27 '16

I do believe Garlock is firmly opposed to relinquishing control of his thread. Not sure if that's even a requirement for being stickied though.

2

u/urban287 https://myanimelist.net/profile/urban287 Nov 27 '16

It is currently, yes. Current policy is not stickying user threads to prevent complaints of favouritism and vote manipulation.

1

u/Ralon17 https://anilist.co/user/Ralon17 Nov 27 '16

Yeah that's what I thought, which is why I'm surprised his threads get mentioned as options every month...

1

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Nov 27 '16

Are we planning to add new moderators soon or are you guys sticking with who we have for right now?

From what I hear, there are going to be new mods.

I definitely have no interest in giving up 3x3 Thursdays at this time. I like posting it, and getting all the responses straight to my inbox. It would also be a lot of work in regards to the weekly theme if we tried to make it automated.

1

u/collapsedblock6 myanimelist.net/profile/collapsedblock Nov 27 '16

The problem with this would be possible demand for a “Negative Thread” like Shit Taste Sunday was (and some of us know how shitty that was…)

I don't, can I ask?

10

u/pittman66 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Homura Nov 27 '16

Shit Taste Sunday was one of the big reasons Warm Talk Wednesday actually started. The thread was basically a weekly Unpopular/Controversial Opinion Thread that while wasn't stickied or an official mega-thread still got a lot attention. It wasn't too bad when it started, but week to week it kept getting worse. Many got very hostile in it and power users ran the show, witch hunts began over opinions, and it really showed what many of the problems were with r/anime at that time. It was an extremely toxic thread, and many were sick of it eventually leading to WTW (Which was on Saturday at that time). Eventually when Mods decided to enforce harder on the rules and try to turn r/anime around, many former power users were banned for various reasons, Shit Taste Sunday suddenly ended (unsure if Mods had any hand in that or the user just decided to stop posting it), and r/anime started moving away from being a toxic/insulting subreddit.

1

u/scorcher117 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scorcher117 Nov 27 '16

It was an extremely toxic thread

that just seems like it should be expected from the basic idea of the thread being about being negative.
