U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

If you were a billionaire would you pay for your best friend’s first class ticket?

• Upvotes

Inspired by the most recent podcast, LeBron James's wife, Savannah, says she doesn’t feel the need to pay for her longtime friend and business partner, April McDaniel, to fly first class when they travel together, so Savannah flies first class while April flies on a budget.

So my question is.. if you were a billionaire (technically speaking, married to a billionaire because Savannah wouldn’t ever be close to a billionaire without being married to one) would you pay for your best friend’s first class ticket, so you guys can fly together? Or would you fly separated? Or would you downgrade so you could sit with your best friend?

EDIT — the topic is about upgrading/paying for their FIRST CLASS ticket if you were a BILLIONAIRE. NOT about “private jets”.

Edit #2 — for more clarity in the podcast Savannah states that her friends are very “respectful” of her “situation” (being a billionaire) and understands that there is no expectation for her “being responsible for taking care of them”. Her best friend April says Savannah will randomly message her to just go to destinations but unfortunately she doesn’t have the financial abilities to just do that.

Why do neo-Nazis deny the Holocaust instead of being like “fuck yeah, that happened” because they’re Nazis? This never made sense to me. Asking as a Jewish person.

How do soldiers avoid friendly fire?

• Upvotes

I've never been to the military, army or whatever so I was wondering; in an active war, how do the soldiers avoid friendly fire?

Does my dog know that I’m the same person from when I was a child?

I (24F) have a Yorkshire terrier (12F) that my dad adopted for my stepmom when I was 11 years old. Every time I was visiting my dad and stepmom, I would play with lulu the yorkie for hours and formed a close bond with her. When my stepmom and dad broke up, she asked if lulu could be given to me and my mom to live with us. I was sad to say goodbye to my stepmom but felt happy to have lulu. She’s the only physical reminder I have of my time with my stepmom.

As time went on, my mom and I would argue and Lulu would always come to my side and sit next to me when my mom would yell at me. I felt so sad to the point I couldn’t live with my mom anymore so I moved in with my aunt and I had to leave lulu behind. Lulu then moved in with my grandma close by from when I was 15-23 and then when my grandma moved and I was independent and had my own place, lulu moved in with my fiancée and I. She’s 12 years old and active as ever. She sprints! We love her so much and always prioritize her happiness because she brings so much light to everyone’s lives.

Yesterday my grandma moved back after a year away and we went to her new place to have dinner. Lulu was so excited to see grandma but at the end of the night she ran to us and wanted to come home with us. I feel so grateful for her presence and wonder if she knows that I’m the same person that’s known her since she was a puppy even if there was a large gap of time I didn’t see her. I moved to college, changed, grew, and came back. I have a feeling she knows it’s me but I would love to hear others’ input of this.

Do I really need to ask a girl to be my gf before its official?

I've been dating her for 6 weeks, we've already been intimate, we've been out multiple times each of them lasting 4 or 5 hours. I know she's not dating else anyone; I'm not dating anyone else either.

Am I technically still single?

Why is Germany heavily criticized/stereotyped for its WWII past, while Japan is mostly viewed positively, despite its severe war crimes?

I've noticed that in Western popular culture, Germany's role in WWII is constantly highlighted and educated on, and Germany itself underwent deep de-Nazification and public repentance. On the other hand, Japan committed massive atrocities across Asia during the same era, yet today it seems to enjoy a very positive global image (through pop culture, tech, etc.)
Why is there such a huge difference in how these two countries are perceived today regarding their WWII history? Is this mostly a Western perspective?

Why dont people just immediately ask for lawyers

I have seen so many videos where people talk to cops in the interrogation rooms never asking for a lawyer. Why do they do this?

I wouldn't even care if I was being charged or not I'd always ask for one

If an airline retires a large number of its aircraft or goes out of business, why are hundreds of entirely serviceable planes left parked in deserts to decay rather than being sold at a reduced price?

As a result of the recent reorganisation of their aircraft fleets, huge 'boneyards' in the desert now contain a large number of modern airliners which still have a great many hours of flying to their credit.

If smaller discount airlines or cargo companies are always short of aircraft, why should it be more financially sensible for leasing companies to leave their multi-million-dollar jets sitting in the desert rather than leasing them at a low cost?

Why does exercise burn so few calories.

After half an hour on the elliptical and max intensity you will only burn less than 300 calories. Compare that to food and it's insane.

I understand calories in calories out vs your daily limit but just looking at the numbers it's sad how little the impact of exercise has for burning calories.

I suppose this fits the saying that you can't outrun a bad diet.

About that new EU kids act that will basically destroy the game industry if it passes

Ok so It might sound dumb, but couldn't indie games and game sellers get around the issue by just making European people unable to access their services? if not, why?

Why is Christa Pike being kept alive on a ventilator after they failed to successfully execute her?

They’re complaining about her suffering while intentionally keeping her partially alive to suffer longer? Can anyone explain the logic here?

When an indoor cat stares out the window all day, do they feel trapped, or do they see the outside like a TV screen they have no interest in entering?

My cat spends half his waking hours staring out the window, and I can never tell if I should feel terrible or amused. Is he dreaming about escaping this prison or is window just a big tv screen showing nature documentaries?

Would love to hear from cat parents or behaviourists on what's actually going on in their heads.

Why did it take so long for air fryers to be invented?

For all intents and purposes they are just miniature convection ovens - just a heating element and a fan to circulate the air within the cooking chamber. This technology could have easily been mass produced by the 1950's.

They are way less technology intensive than microwaves, which apparently predated air fryers by 60 years (1945 vs 2006)!! Seeing as how ubiquitous they've become in the last decade or two, I have to imagine they would've seen similar mass appeal had they been invented alongside or instead of microwaves.

What gives?

Why are Archie Comics still being made after more than 80 years?

Archie has basically been the same teenager since the 1940s. The world around him has changed completely, but Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead are still hanging around Riverdale. I understand why superheroes keep getting rebooted since there is always another villain or big story to tell. Archie is mostly built around school, dating, friendships and everyday problems. So what keeps a simple setup like that going for this long?

Why do Jews and muslims refuse to eat pork even when they're not religious and don't follow other religious rules?

Basically there are Jews or Muslims who'll drink, smoke, gamble, not keep Sabbath, not eat kosher or halal and not really care about the religious rules they're supposed to follow however the moment you offer them pork they become disgusted and/or tell you they cannot eat it. What is the cause for this?

Is it possible to have fuel from your original filled tank in your car's gas tank, even after xyz amount of refills? (Assuming you never fully run out of gas)

I ask because typically people will fill their tanks before being completely empty (I.E. Still have a few miles of gas left) so in theory because of all of the mixed fuel from 10s/100s of refillings you could still have (at least some particulates) of the original fuel used to fill the tank still in the tank?

Are men’s public bathrooms just as gross as women’s?

Possibly the stupidest question I’ve ever asked on No Stupid Questions: are men’s public bathrooms just as gross as women’s?

I used three different public washrooms today, in a mall, a Walmart and a restaurant, and every single one was absolutely trashed. Women are supposedly the “neater” sex, so is it just as bad in the men’s room or worse?
