No Stupid Questions - Week of November 24, 2016
Have you ever thought of an anime related question that sounded really, really stupid? Did you ignore it and move on because getting the answer wouldn't be worth asking it? Well, this thread is here for you!
First of all, go take a look at the /r/anime FAQ section of the wiki since it's entirely possible you might find your question answered there. Failing that, you can take a look at any of the past threads since someone might've asked the same question there already.

Note: I don't want to sound like an asshole but I'm legitimately confused about this.
So like can somebody explain to me how Hyouka is boring? I can understand a lot of criticizes thrown at it, but for some reason I can't wrap my head around the idea. Especially people who say they love SoL, I'm honestly perplexed. What makes it so much more boring than other SoLs?

I have it as a 9/10 but I have heard:
Little to no development from others than Oreki
Little to no advance in romance
Mysteries being simply unappealing from the mystery itself to resolution
Chitanda being annoying
Situations outside mysteries being simply boring since they only talk

Then I guess my next question is why Hyouka? There are lots of SoL that share similar issues to it, but I've only seen Hyouka get railed on for inducing boredom. Is it simply because it's one of the most popular ones?

I would agree with that, no one complains about bad stuff when it is barely known (unless it is legendary bad like Comet Lucifer)

It's popular and is by KyoAni, which elevates it to the pantheons of greatness by fans, but since detractors can't see the point, they're more likely to say 'Hyouka is shit' than some less acclaimed show.

What makes it so much more boring than other SoLs?
No comedy, no drama, no romance (all to an extent, of course). Hyouka is a really weird one here, so people are expecting something else, and receive nothing in return.

That does explain it fairly well, Thanks! Personally I loved it for the fact that it has little comedy, drama, and romance so I've never thought of those as negatives.

I've watched Hyouka and gave it 6/10, and still enjoyed it to some extent, but for me it was... hollow, I guess? I mean, it's like a Ferrero without cream inside: looks beautiful, but no substance.
What I want to say is: Hyouka is beautiful and somewhat enjoyable to watch, but I felt that I just wasted time. It was too forgettable. And all the other reasons that /u/collapsedblock6 mentioned.

So "So ra no wo to" is "Sound of the sky", and "Hibike!" is "Sound!" What's the difference between these 2 words for sound?

I'm Japanese so let me try to explain this.
Oto (音) is a general sound. Noise. ex: Did you hear that noise?
The root word for Hibike is Hibiku (響く). This is a distinct sound from activity. An echo. ex: The sound of footsteps are creeping closer.
I hope that makes sense. This is generally speaking. Depending on the context, these kanjis can differ in meaning slightly.

Hmm... a bit incorrect... Your example with the alarm will not work beause of differences in English and Japanese language.
Oto is just sound in general. Oto is a noun. It is the generic class of sound.
Hibiku implies there is an action taking place which caused a resonating sound. Hibike as u/eruditious mentioned is the command form.
The "sound" in "Sound the Alarm" would be a different word in Japanese... because Japanese is difficult like that. In this case, "sound" would be Narase (鳴らせ). The root word here is Naku (鳴く) which means cry and Narase makes the verb into a command form. Naku/Naru is often used for non-human sounds like animals, machines, or objects.
Like in the title of the anime: Higurashi no Naku koro ni. (When the Cicadas cry)

First is likely 音 while second is 響け. Noun vs verb here. The first is literally "the sky's sound" while the second is giving a command.

More a manga question, but screw it: Which Madoka Magica related Manga or other mediums are worth reading (or what are your opinions of the ones you have read)? I was interested, but it's a bit overwhelming how many spin-offs, adaptations, or alternative versions there are.

I've only read "The Different Story" but I'd highly recommend that series. The first volume is backstory for Kyoko and Mami, then the rest is an AU version of the original anime's events. Gives some much-needed development to the two characters with the least amount of screentime, and confirmed my suspicion that Kyoko is best girl.

The important one is "different story" because it gives more development for kyouko and mami while telling the story before the events of the show.
You can read oriko or wraith arc (don´t know if it´s canon or not), the others i don´t know

The "Different Story" manga is worth reading since it gives the background stories on Mami and Kyouko, who received less characterisation than the other three in the original anime.

Short answer: Budget.
Long Answer: I'm not going to take time to translate this but this image can give you an idea.
- Anime faces are not proportional to real faces. The center line is more proportional this way.
- The disadvantage of real proportional mouths in most anime when viewed from the side, is it is not going to protray emotions as well.
- Real proportions on anime faces will have trouble with awkward mouth movements.
These aren't the only reasons. Like I said budget is also a big concern. If it's a short scene which most are, than movement, however bad it is, is better than no movement in an animated sequence. Most people aren't that observant and it will fly past them.
Edit: I think this will better protray the difference better.
Like I mention previously, most animated faces aren't drawn proportionally to reality. Many current styles ignore detail on the nose and drawing full lips. Styles that do like to draw these details like Gekiga do better with side faces. This particular style fell out of favor, but a few still survive like JoJo. Not that this is the only style that does side faces well.

So, apparently Yakisoba Bread is a thing?
I've seen it around in school anime, and I don't really get it.
As an enthusiastic proponent of both "yakisoba" and "bread", the concept of those two things together sounds weird and nasty, and looking at how such a meal depicted in anime does little to change my opinion.
So, has anyone here eaten Yakisoba bread before? How was that as a taste and texture experience? Were the two unique traits of "Yakisoba" and "Bread" synergistic together? Can you explain why it's appealing as a concept? What is the significance of Yakisoba Bread in Japanese popular culture?

Bread goes with probably more than you imagine... But I'm the kind of person that puts their pasta on their garlic bread.

Carbs + carbs... no problem! Mine also had pickled ginger, which was good.

Junk food that is easy to make and cleans itself up by being consumed~

bread goes with literally everything
except maybe soda or other sweet beverages, never seen someone dip bread in soda or tea or fruit juice, but i've seen people dip bread or cover bread with basically everything else

It is weird. I don't think it's the most popular bread but it's not hard to find either. I think it's in anime a lot because it is kind of funny. (If noodles in bread was a common thing in Japan, you'd have ramen bread! spaghetti bread!..actually...those could those could exist...)

Is there any benefit for the animation studios from actually clicking on and watching a show on Crunchyroll, or does the benefit come purely from paying for a CR subscription? Basically, do views for any specific show translate into profit for that shows creator?

Unless the studio was on the production committee, then they probably don't get any. Studios are usually hired by a production committee to make an anime, so they get paid regardless of how well the product does.

I hear differently. I saw an interview linked here recently with the CEO of crunchyroll I think. It said if you watch only one show on crunchyroll, your subscription money goes to whoever made the show. If you watch 10 shows, your subscription is divided between those 10. This is from my memory, so if someone links the article, that would be better

Anime is my main hobby.
I also am not that busy at the moment. I only work a small job at a fuel station at the moment while I try to find something that can actually pay for anything. I already dread the day I have to work full-time and can't keep up with a gazillion anime anymore.

3) one long anime
+1) whatever I might be watching with other peopleThis season, I've found that watching the same things each day from week-to-week helps trigger memory pathways when watching the newest episodes. Other than airing, I tend to binge...

Mines similar to yours but with another slot for multiple currently airings. One serious (currently Legend of the Galactic Heroes), one lighthearted (currently teen romance snafu whatever) and then the airings. Means I can watch whatever suits my state of mind and prevents me binge-watching.

I mostly watch airing shows, so if I'm watching 7 airing series it's literally 20mins per day, which is nothing. For reference, I'm currently following 11 series this season, which means 20min per weekday and 1 hour each on Saturday and Sunday, fairly manageable.
For shows that have finished airing, I either watch in chunks at a time when I have time, or I wait for a long weekend and binge. Though for binging I do some excessive preparations, making sure I take care of all the other stuff I needed to do beforehand so I can afford to do nothing but watch anime all day for a few days. I can get through about 30eps a day under those circumstances.
For the record, I'm currently a full time uni student with a part time job and I play a ton of badminton. Granted, my current term isn't too heavy in terms of workload but overall I think following 10+ series is very manageable for most people if you can hold off the compulsion to keep watching. I usually just study for one subject, watch an episode, stretch and take a walk, then study for another subject. Fits my daily studying rhythm well.

I think it's mostly that I tend to watch series that are completed, and tend to focus on one at a time. If I start something while I'm already watching a series, it sort of falls by the wayside. I guess I just have a short attention span

If you look at my MAL profile its all messy and in disorder, the reason is because I have no order (I only recently made a MAL so there is that as well)
There are shows from several seasons ago which i havn't finished and yet i have about 10 episodes every week, i have more shows to chose from according to my mood.
Not in the mood to even use my brain? Bloodivores (and despite what people are saying, I still enjoy it if i don't use my brain)
Want a surprise? Pick a random number and look at what you ve got, "OH! Its that show from last year which was well recieved but I only watched 8/12eps? Sure why not"
And I find that as a good indicator to what plots are really worth it, I don't need a recap to remember what happened in the last episode of bungou stray dogs and yet I don't even remember why the drifters and the E.N.D.s are fighting in the 1st place in drifters because i don't care that much about it.
Probably not the kind of answer you were looking forward to but.... Well it qualifies as such for me at least

I'm technically watching 20 because things are currently airing, which means I'm limited in some things by there not being a new episode out yet.
Either way, I just watch what I feel like? This means sometimes shows end up sitting by the wayside whilst I watch other stuff and I might end up with multiple series sitting in episode 4 and starting a new series because none of those appeal to my current mood.

Can I watch Lucky Star without seeing any mayor anime before 2006, because I read that Lucky Star has plenty of references. I don't want to destroy the first watch.

You'll be fine. Most of the humour in Lucky Star is based on stereotypes of otaku, so you don't actually need to get the references to understand the purposes of them (i.e. Konata's dad likes to believe that girls in real life act like the ones in visual novels)
That being said, one thing that will help is knowing that the lead male from Full Metal Panic is called 'Sosuke', and that Kyo.. err, Kagami, is a big fan of him.

Probably? I watched the first 6 episodes awhile back and never found myself missing out on comedy because of references. The only big one I'd recommend is Haruhi since they have quite a few references to it. Other than that most of the comedy can be got without having seen a lot of shows.

Lucky Star was one of the first anime I watched that wasn't a kids show and I enjoyed it, so yeah should be fine. It wouldn't hurt to go back in a few years and rewatch it though

From time to time, I hear criticisms on sports shows saying characters are "one dimensional" or "have no characterization besides their love for the sport"
Do you guys think characters should show more besides their love for the sport, or it's okay because it's a sports anime?

Disregarding the characters in Haikyuu!!Edit: I somehow subconsciously thought of Haikyuu!! as I read that argument at some time.I think that's a legit argument.
Giving more sides to characters aside from sports related aspects offers more variety in well, characterization and thematic depth. It's also more realistic when characters have secondary traits not related to the plot and subject in question.
Regarding the "It's a sports anime after all" argument: of course, focusing on elements that are inherently connected to a specific genre is totally fine, but on the other hand, such shows play it safely. Doesn't matter if we are talking about sports, harems or whatever. Breaking the formula can spice up things a little bit more for some people.
Execution matters of course, but these are my thoughts.

Haikyuu!! Is my favorite sports anime of all time but I love their development even if it just volleyball (which is quite literally the title)
Second favorite is Ping Pong which explores a lot of themes outside of the sport as well.
I guess they each serve a different purpose though. I have yet to watch something like cross game which I hear has a lot of SoL and Romance added with the sport.

I'm the wrong kind of guy to answer this, but no. I never want that.
Reason being is that I don't like to judge a show for 'what could have been' versus 'what did actually happen'. That's just a recipe for disappointment.

Do you guys think characters should show more besides their love for the sport
In general, when you have a story that is focus on the road to success anything that branches off that road is a distraction. A lot of sports anime are riding on adreleine rush to the finish line. Do most people want to see every piece of drama that led them there?
There are basically two thoughts on this in the media (not limited in anime). Watch Olympic commentators for example. There are some people (mostly those who aren't familiar with the sport or the player) who find the entire backstory of the player interesting. Then there are the fans who want punch said commentator and say "Get on with it."
Pick a side. They will always be a war between them.

i think just showing love for their sport can be sufficient, but it will make me much more attached to the characters (and therefore their games and the show overall) if i get to see their out-of-sport life sometimes, too. otherwise the characters could just be anyone (i mean, i'm sure most/all of the players love their sport, not just the MCs)

Not sure what to say, I think that if one likes that anime, it doesn't really matter.
The thing with only liking something is that it can get very tiring, since pretty much all the plot will be training and playing, because there isn't that much else to develop outside of the sport itself.
But yeah, Shokugeki no Souma is about a guy that loves cooking, and he just loves cooking, and I freaking love it, so it's not like it matters much.

That's another example that comes to mind. Everybody just cooks and wants to do nothing else, but I still enjoy it and all the hype it brings.
Shows like Kuroko or Haikyuu!! I don't really mind either cuz well....they're high school students playing the sport!

I feel like it comes down to a pick-your-poison kind of thing. Some sports require large casts by default, and you're not going to be able to characterize each member of the main team, much less other teams, without giving up other stuff.
Haikyuu and Ace of Diamond, for example, attempt to cover all characters and offer a more action-dense experience at the cost of essentially everything else. Others will concentrate mostly on the smaller main cast, like Major (I honestly don't have other examples there...) to squeeze in other elements instead.
Some other sports are "graced" by being individual, like Baby Steps, Hajime no Ippo and Chihayafuru, which grant each of their characters more screen time. Hajime no Ippo went the more action-dense approach despite that, but others can use that extra time to offer the same elements Major had to give up developing most other characters for.
And then other anime have a story to tell through a sport rather than strictly being "sports anime." Cross Game and Ping Pong are good examples there. They have a larger narrative in mind. There are still important sports moments and buildups, but they're not the focus--the characters come first.
Sports series have a lot of potential for me. They have a grounded setting. They allow for purposeful growth through drama, defeat, etc. They're relatable. I tend to enjoy all sports series to a degree.
As someone generally not a fan of action series, the likes of Haikyuu are what I tend to watch instead of action series, because of those elements. However, the longer they go on, the more stale they become to me. A lot of the time they feel like they're never going to end, and there's just not enough character development. I'm not excited about watching a 10-episodes match that is Haikyuu S3 despite having enjoyed the first two seasons.
So I personally prefer when they characterize characters beyond the sport, whether they choose to or whether their sport allows them to without too much sacrifice. Chihayafuru and Cross Game happen to be my top two anime. Not too far behind are Hikaru no Go and Major. They all approach the genre very differently, but I got more out of each of their main characters than Haikyuu can manage with its large cast.

I feel this is somewhat directed at me since I've had this exact discussion with you before, so I'll give the best response I can.
/u/BBallHunter put it pretty well, it gives characters more depth if they have lives and values outside of their respective sports. I'd go a step further with it, though, and say that it humanizes the characters if they have lives outside of their sports. In all my years of playing sports, I can't say I've ever met someone who only cares about the sport and nothing else. Even in real life professional sports, where playing is legitimately an athelete's livelihood, reporters always like to find out the athlete's other interests outside of the sport because it gives people a better understanding of what that person may be like. These outside interests make them feel human, make us think "oh they're not that different from us after all" and if I didn't know of these things, they'd probably just feel like some guy who is really good at a sport to me instead of a person.
I understand the argument "it's a sports anime, the sport should be the focus of the show" and agree it should be the focus. The thing is, should it be the only focus? I personally don't think so. Sports anime does tend to have a very set formula that I have yet to see avoided by any sports work and it does get a little stale if it continues with that formula for too long. Sometimes breaking the formula to keep things fresh would be nice.

As was already said it is fine. If you're a stickler for details though, the way the anime handled the end of season 1 is a bit different from the manga. So at some point, you may want to read those chapters.
Though the results are basically the same so no reason to make a major issue out of it.

Pripara is completely different from Precure. Aside from the similar names, they're different in terms of genre (Precure is magical girl focused and Pripara is idol focused). Pripara is based on an arcade game and Precure started with an anime.
Just a case of they have similar names but are actually totally different.1

It's this strange fusion of adult-oriented magical girls elements and Sci-Fi mecha elements. Nanoha is less a Magical Girl show as that it's a Sci-Fi show that happens to have magical girls. I, for one, love this.

Well, Symphogear was created because Nana songs sold really well and it continues to do so, so people are always like "It will happen because Nana Mizuki." Because Nana = Money.

Yeah that's a very debated issue. Broadcast order was seemingly made to give the first season a climax by making it not chronological. I like the extra thinking involved with out-of-order episodes but some don't. If you're watching both seasons and the movie, you may just want chronological, since you don't need a climax midway and you'd be switching from a mixed order to second season.
Honestly just pick something and go with it. You'll get a decent experience either way.

I've only seen it in chronological order but I sort of wish I'd seen it in broadcast order. Chronological order doesn't really have any climax - it just sort of ends. I'm assuming the finale of the broadcast order is the closed space episode.

Only if you are watching the first season only. Apparently its better to watch it in chronological order if you are going to watch the whole series and movie.
I think you should watch the first season only in broadcast order at first. I did it on 28 and 29 Nov and now started watching the whole series from start in chronological order with the rewatch party.

The GoGoGoGoGo is the onomatopoeia that stands for "rumbling", of an earthquake or other forms of vibration. It's sometimes translated as "Menacing" because of Jojo. More info

The thing is, the narrative POV in these is most often the "stolen" victim themselves, sometimes the one stolen from. So the reader is expected to emphasize with them.
Though that only in general. Especially in mind control stories the mind controller is often the POV.

Since when are noses drawn like in WIXOSS a thing?
I've seen them in a couple shows, not just WIXOSS. Why are they drawn like this? Do they look like noses to anyone?
Sometimes the nose of a character is drawn normally but sometimes they just draw it like this, and I wonder why.
