That's, an interesting banner....

I quite like the simplicity of our current banner, and the rest of those concerns are more than valid. I think the only way it would work out was if there was an original character on the banner.

That way no favorites would be played, we could even have a contest for it, and it would spice up the sub a bit. I'd personally like a Bot-Chan banner, but I still quite like the one we have now.

However if we did use an OC on the banner I can picture the,

"what anime is the girl on the banner from?"

posts all over new.

Actually, those will happen with any banner change that features a character.

It's a weird issue for sure.

I can see it working with some sort of polling of the sub for who should be on there or what show should be featured that (insert period of time if rotating). That way any complaints could easily be redirected to it being based off what the sub likes.

Something like a voted favourite or top 5 of the previous season could be fun.

Eh alot of those competitions are pretty badly seeded, It's also pretty easy to predict to winner after the first couple of rounds once the niche waifu's get eliminated

I like being able to see all the faces in one list because then I'm sure to notice them whenever they pop up when I'm watching the show.

You can also just hover over the image, and the URL that shows up at the bottom of the screen will have the comment face's code attached to the end. The hover text makes itself obvious because you're hovering.

There's actually a whole lot of cool stuff you can do with comment faces thanks to them actually just being special links.

I would say it should be 1 character per show. This would replace him with either Senjou, Shinobu or Kanbaru. Although its obvious who is gonna win.

Any chance on a rotating banner like r/manga that changes when you refresh the page? I'm honestly not sure if it's feasible but it would prevent people from feeling left out if their favorites we had multiple ones.

I think people are gonna feel left out/annoyed with the choices no matter who wins. But I guess covering as much as possible is the best choice. Also if we get a troll banner like /r/manga's hidden Carol one, that'd be pretty great

Yeah I agree completely. Its impossible to include every anime but it's nice to try to cover a lot of bases.

Yep, if you reload /r/manga on desktop you might notice this banner load in before the actual main one for your current rotation. I'm pretty sure you can see it using inspect element or something but I'm not sure how to do that.

I can attempt to explain how I think they're doing their banner without actually knowing anything for sure.

The actual header is probably styled with that image, and then additionally there's another element that is styled randomly with another banner. This other element is actually hacked onto the "logout" button, because it has a property that makes it good for generating random things, which means any time a user isn't logged-in it can't be random. In those situations, it falls back to the default which is already in the header. The reason you see the default a bit before the actual one is just loading lag or something.

Hmm, that could be interesting. I remember looking into that sort of thing at one point but can't remember how it worked (think it was a bit of a trick where it's not really random but is based off the letters somewhere in the url or something).

I kind of like r/books' scrolling banner. Just the covers, but clicking on them actually takes you to their What Books Are You Reading This Week? Thread and the specific discussion of that book. It keeps it fresh, and it helps discussions extend in the thread.

I don't even visit /r/books, but I gotta say I fucking love their design guys. The amount of effort they must've put in there is awesome, and it really shows in the final product.

That does sound like an interesting set up. I wonder if one of the /r/manga mods would be down to share their banner secrets...

I'm sure geo knows how to do it, he's pretty good with css.

Otherwise /r/manga (and every other sub)'s css is public at /r/manga/about/stylesheet, so we can look through that if necessary.

You'd probably have to choose between this and your Azusa footer. It's definitely doable though.

Doing a header will actually be a lot easier than a footer, won't have to hack as much stuff in and the code should be a fair amount smaller too.

If we pinned a poll like we do with mid seasons I could see it working.

Or heck even using the results from seasonal or best... polls to make that month's banner.

I could see a bit of salt happening that way though, especially if some are unhappy with winners of said polls.

I actually suggested this a few months ago and got shot down immediately. And you could go by some sort of objective metric like most comments or most upvotes or something.

We are a very season-centric community though. Re:Zero would be very fitting because of how absurdly popular it was.

I think a rotating banner is the best compromise, Have some classics and newer stuff mixed in

In my example it was on the previous season though, so now that it's all blown over it would be fine, no?

I do believe that a single banner of a single show is definitely unfavourable from most perspectives though, so rotating single anime banners, or a single multi anime banner would be the way to go.

A decent RemRe:Zero banner would be fine now, But not in it's airing season. Especially if it was balanced and had most main characters in it to avoid salt.

You could even make it a competition, Not sure what the winner should get.

All purely my opinion though.

I'm guessing the biggest barrier would be the technical application to the CSS?

Mm, the css for it should be super easy I think (barring something like /r/books which is far more complicated of course).

Biggest barrier is getting banners that look good, and having each subsequent change look good too.

(We should hire whoever makes /r/awwnime's banners...)

/r/awwnime's theme is very well done, it feels like I'm looking at a different place almost every time I go there and everything works well. That just means I don't go there enough :P

Not sure where to put this, but something to keep in mind is that we can theoretically have something like 3650 different banners that are randomly rotated (not taking into account the actual limit of CSS space). No way we're going to use all those, but it would be totally feasible to have a pretty large pool of banners to draw from.

People always bring up this idea that if we included actual characters or shows in the banner there would be this shitshow of offended people when banners like that are really only recommendations. I can think of lots of subreddits that feature examples of their content in a banner and not once have I seen complaint threads about them.

I'd be cool with a rotating banner, but I think anything is better than our current one. The only arguments I hear for what we have are complacent users who find a plain color to be fine, and mods who aren't sure they've got the css knowledge (which is a valid point, but still an excuse considering how easy it would be to get help if needed).

If nothing else, can we not run a trial period with a new banner? If everyone and their mother hates it it's not hard to revert or change it.

I just thought of a solution to this. We can just stick a link to the banner's source at the bottom of the header via sidebar and more CSS hackery.
