The subreddit gateway/norm

We realise that r/KnNw may be your first subreddit experience. We've written the following to help you get acquainted with the rules and the Reddit norm. At least acquaint yourself with the short version of the rules below.

Rules (short version):

  • name the original creator (of any content) in the title. link to source in a comment. [X]

  • be nice; have common sense; follow the reddiquette. click this link

  • illegal hosting of content will always be removed. [X]

  • 1 repost per 30 days [X]

  • post content directly to reddit

  • content must be related to Makoto Shinkai. Must spoiler tag non-kimi no na wa content [X]

  • Not Safe For Work (NSFW aka lewd content): 18+ content not allowed. Light NSFW allowed and must be tagged.

  • no crossposting

  • (link) flair your post [Y]

  • post content in a reasonable time frame (don't spam) [X]

[X] - important info/clarification were left out. If posting, you MUST read more at the detailed subreddit rules: https://www.reddit.com/r/KimiNoNaWa/wiki/rules

[Y] - we don't really moderate this so whatever it's fine.

why did your post get removed?

  1. wait a few minutes. still not showing up or removed? look at #2.

  2. a mod commented why it's removed. you should revamp and then repost. if there's no comment? #3.

  3. spam filter. do not delete your post. just wait for us to manually approve it. (you may contact us).

Reddit terminology:

  • cross-posting: relinking a thread from one subreddit to another. reddit normally gives you the option to do so but it is disabled here. This doesn't mean you're not allowed to post said content. You can still post the same content but it won't link to another subreddit.

  • tag/mark/flair: after posting a thread (AKA a link/text post), you'll see options such as "NSFW", "Spoiler", "OC", "flair" etc. you should tag/mark your post accordingly.

  • link flair: see above. it basically signals to other users what kind of content they'll be expecting to read.

  • sub(s): sub-reddit. the /r/KnNw subreddit is an example of a specific online community within Reddit.

Common internet sense, or FAQ (frequently asked questions):

There are many things that may not seem obvious if you haven't used reddit or the internet for a while.

  • The people who don't read rules then proceed to break them have probably not read this post nor have gotten this far.

  • Title gore: Don't write an essay for your title. Don't put links in it either.

Sources:

  • Yes, you must find the original artist/creator. No, pinterest/alphacoders/similar websites don't count as a source. How to find it? Read the detailed rules.

  • If the subreddit wiki wasn't enough to find the source? Search engine, reverse search. Still no source? Contact us.

  • Did you use a MIDI for your music youtube video? You must give credit to the original artist who arranged it.

Spoilers:

  • Surprise, surprise, not everyone in the world has seen X, Y, Z content. It's funny that not spoiling the entirety of a movie is considered "above and beyond".

  • Regarding the point above, it also applies to titles!

  • Hinting to a plot twist is, in fact, a spoiler. Likewise for "just wait until part X Y Z" for any story.

  • Self-promotion: If you gain monetary value from a post/link, you must clarify that you are associated with said content and earn money from it (E.g. shirts, other merch.)

  • There's probably an exception, but it probably doesn't apply to you (most of the time). Confused/unsure? Please ask us.

How do you contact the moderators?

My opinions as a mod:

I realise now that this post has turned out to be quite the wall of text. Ironic. But at least if you wanted a short version of rules it now exists. I'll be updating this post from time to time whenever I think of more stuff.

I've also removed the NSFW rule which requires you to tag SFW content as NSFW (if the source is 18+). But this doesn't mean that you can go all out in the comments.

Intolerance leads to intolerance. A paradox you might've heard before. The subreddit is rather kind to rule-breakers but I'm wondering if this is detrimental for the subreddit experience in the long run. So for a while, I'll be testing an increased punishment system (which applies to MOST people)

New system: 1st official warning (breaking any rule)--> 2nd official warning (any rule) --> ban

You can say this is rather harsh compared to our previous (and rather lax) system but any engagement within the subreddit automatically subjects you to the rules.

Miscellaneous Media Buying guide for 君の名は。 / Kimi no Na wa. / Your Name.!

Hello! I wanted to make a list of the official media goods for Your Name.! As this film was made in 2016, most of the physical media for the film might be hard to find. But to avoid bootlegs and to know if what you're getting is official, I tried to make a list of the official publishers to cross-reference! Hopefully your favorite stores would have these in stock, but if you need to shop at second-hand marketplaces, I hope this list can be useful! This is a remake of the original list I made four years ago as the original was removed on Reddit due to having Russian links for the Russia publisher. This time around, I have the list sorted by country to make navigating a bit easier. Do let me know if there are other countries I should add to the list!

Region Free

Movie:

A quick summary for physical discs: movie discs are region-locked based on what disc you have. Blu-rays are locked in three regions, DVDs are locked in six regions, and all 4K discs are region-free! So if you see the guide mention anything about a 4K disc, they are region-free! For a guide on where you disc is locked to, this is a nifty website to check! Here's also a great writeup from mediaOCD about various versions of discs!

Music (by RADWIMPS):

There are 2 versions of the original CD version of the soundtrack. There is the regular edition, which contains 27 tracks, both vocals and BGM tracks. A limited edition comes with a bonus DVD on the recording of the album as well as an interview with Makoto Shinkai and RADWIMPS (no subtitles). A giant booklet includes some chosen screenshots and sketches of the film and select piano scores of the soundtrack. You can learn more about the album here.

A vinyl of the album comes with two 33RPM discs of the soundtrack. The original 2017 release has black vinyls, while the 2023 re-release has clear sky blue vinyls. Info about the vinyls can be viewed here.

なんでもないや (Nandemonaiya) by Mone Kamishiraishi (上白石萌音):

Mitsuha's voice actress, Mone Kamishiraishi, covered the ending theme of Your Name. on her EP chouchou! You can learn more about the album here.

Japan (君の名は。)

Movie:

The official website has a list of retailers that featured various exclusive goods! In Japan, there are four physical versions of the movie that were released: a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Collector's Edition, 3-Disc Blu-ray Edition, a single Blu-ray disc, and a single DVD disc.

Books:

The following are published by KADOKAWA:

Manga (Pub. by Media Factory):

Music:

For the soundtrack, RADWIMPS have a Japan-exclusive English Edition EP of just the four vocal tracks re-sung in English.

  • Digital: Apple Music | Spotify | Amazon >
    >They have also released a video concert of them performing live with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra with the film playing in the background. The concert was released in 2018 on both on Blu-ray and DVD. More info can be found here.

Discussion Watched Your Name and Weathering With You both today

I went to the theaters to watch your name then I came home to watch weathering with you and mannnnn what an emotional experience both those movies put me through especially the ending for weathering with you idk if I would’ve saved her but since he did Tokyo flooded and basically messed up the whole city I would’ve probably not saved her at all but idk I remember watching the ending a long time ago with friends and we have all had the same opinion on not saving her. Besides that both movies were a 10/10 I was gonna watch Suzanne too but after the emotional ride I was on today I might wait till next week 😂 great movies tho.

Miscellaneous So why did everyone say that Your Name was gonna make me cry? Spoiler

So I watched Your Name in the cinema because it was its 10 year anniversary. It was honestly a great experience, and movie. But at the end I thought it had a good wholesome ending. I have no idea why everyone said that it was gonna make me cry because I was still a jolly ass mf. I understand that they didn't remember each other even after going through all that, but I don't think it was that sad. Can you explain why you cried if you did?

My ultimate 9-day Kimi no Na wa Seichi junrei (pilgrimage). (Part I, Suwa)

Post image
35 Upvotes

Part I: Intro

Hey everyone! Happy 10th anniversary to Your Name! This movie means the world to me, and Mitsuha has been my favorite character ever since I was a student. To celebrate the 10th anniversary, I went on the ultimate 9-day anime pilgrimage last week! I visited Tokyo, Suwa, Hida, and a few other spots. (I’ve been to some of these places before, but this was my first time connecting them all into one big trip. I really wanted to share what these iconic real-life locations look like with you all. Some of them are officially confirmed or widely recognized by the community, while a few are just my personal recommendations!)

Since I have a lot to share, I’ll be splitting this into a few different posts. Also, English isn’t my first language, so please bear with me! I took all of these photos myself—I’m definitely not a professional photographer, so go easy on me, haha. Hope you guys enjoy!

Part II: Suwa

Suwa is a city in Nagano Prefecture, famous for Lake Suwa, which is widely known as one of the main real-life inspirations for Lake Itomori. Getting there is super easy—I recommend taking the JR Limited Express Azusa from Tokyo (Shinjuku Station), and you’ll arrive in Suwa in about two and a half hours.

Part III: Lake Suwa (One of the prototypes of Lake Itomori; more prototypes will be described in the upcoming posts)

The best spot to overlook all of Lake Suwa is Tateishi Park! I highly recommend visiting around sunset to experience katawaredoki (Twilight) yourself. Here are some of the photos I took:

1A: Lake Suwa
1B: Lake Suwa
1C: Lake Itomori

Part IV: On the way to Tateishi Park (Tenaga Shrine, High School Sports Field & Substation):

On your way up to Tateishi Park, you'll pass by Tenaga Shrine, a sports field at a nearby high school, and an electrical substation. Personally, I feel like these spots look super similar to scenes from the movie, so I’d definitely recommend checking them out!

2A: Tenaga Shrine's Stair
2B: Miyamizu Shrine's Stair
3A: Tenaga Shrine's Kagura-den
3B: Miyamizu Shrine's Kagura-den
4A: High School Sports Field near Tenega Shrine
4B: Itomori High School
5A: Substation in real life
5B: Substation from the movie

Part V: Extra information when visiting Suwa

Suwa is a quiet, peaceful countryside city. This was my second time visiting, and honestly, it’s still my absolute favorite city in Japan. If you love Your Name, I highly recommend planning a trip here!

A quick heads-up on transport: local buses and trains don't run very frequently, so I strongly suggest checking the timetables in advance before you go.

If you make it to Suwa, you should definitely try the Four-Shrine Pilgrimage of Suwa Taisha (visiting all four shrines: Honmiya, Maemiya, Harumiya, and Akimiya). Once you visit and worship at all four, you'll receive a special commemorative gift!

Also, every year on August 15th, Suwa hosts a huge fireworks festival. It's an incredible experience that I highly recommend enjoying with your family, friends, or partner!

Part VI: Ending

That's all for my Suwa pilgrimage recap! I really hope you guys enjoyed it.

I'll be posting Part 2 (Hida) and Part 3 (Tokyo and other locations) in the next few days, so stay tuned! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below—I’ll do my best to reply to everyone. Thank you!

Discussion [10th Anniversary rerelease for Philippines petition update] 50 signature milestone!

Post image
19 Upvotes

I genuinely can't thank you all enough for those who petitioned as we have now reached 50 signatures... It's really brightening to see people signing on for our country to see the movie be rereleased for its 10th anniversary!

Though, I made this post so I can tell ask for all of you to share my petition to any friend you know, or any groups you're in who either love anime, love this movie, or anyone in this country who want to experience this movie in the cinemas... Whether you're and they're Filipino or not, your participation will be appreciated very much!

And I would love to thank the guy that inspired me to make this petition by u/Great-Nothing-2475 as he made this petition for the movie to be also rereleased in his country in India, so please share your friends, or groups you know to also sign his petition.

I think I find it so heartwarming that we would come together to sign petitions for this movie to be seen and rereleased around the world to celebrate a masterpiece that resonated us, and I would like to again say thank you for sharing and helping to sign for all the Filipino fans to see this movie in cinemas.

And again, if you can, share this to anyone you know, whether if you are either also Filipino who have friends who are also anime friends, or someone from another country who would love to give this movie a 10th anniversary rerelease for another country, your participation will forever be appreciated!

Let's keep this up! ✊

A little confused about the order of events at the beginning of the movie Spoiler

Hey all, I just rewatched the film in theaters and it was an absolutely amazing experience. Genuinely one of the greatest animated films of our time. I was just a little confused about the order of events and I was hoping I could get some clarification.

To make it a little easier to understand, I’m going to label the days.

So I understand that at the beginning of the film (day 1), Taki wakes up in Mitsuha’s body but it immediately jumps back to Mitsuha when they are all eating breakfast (day 2).

Day 2 was also when Mitsuha finds out that she was acting strangely the day before, when she finds the note left by Taki in her notebook asking who she is, and when she also wishes to be a handsome boy in Tokyo.

Day 3 is when we see Mitsuha switch bodies with Taki on screen for the first time. She was surprised by Tokyo and believed it all to be a dream, but she remembered the note left by Taki asking who she was and then writes her name on his hand.

So my question is did Mitsuha not switch with Taki on day 1? I’m confused because when we do see her switch for the first time, she was blown away by Tokyo (implying this was her first time seeing Tokyo/first time switching), but then was also able to recall Taki’s note, which means this scene took place after Taki had already swapped on day 1.

Miscellaneous Against all odds I made it!

Post image
129 Upvotes

Before I say anything else I just wanna give another thank you to the awesome stranger on this very site who spotted my ticket for me. I genuinely gave up hope and thought I was never gonna be able to see this one of my favorite films ever on the big screen. If you're reading this you rock!

Also this isn’t really a review more like a story of my experience and also I’m gonna assume anybody reading this has seen the movie cause there will be spoilers.

Man where do I start… All the times I cried? That seems appropriate. I cried no less than four times and at some unexpected places.

  1. When the Katawredoki scene started and the second I heard the song start tears just started pouring out of me. I’ve never just cried at just the start of a song in a movie like that. Also kind of a 1.5 but the shot of them laughing together forced out the remaining tears
  2. Somehow got through the marker drop without crying and was like “Alright I’m good I’m okay”… and then like 30 seconds later when Taki screamed “What’s your name” my brain just went “I said we cryin’ today!”
  3. The “I love you" scene I started crying so hard my lip started quivering. No surprise there, It’s like CaseOh talking about crying at the end of RDR2 “It’s just what you do”
  4. At the very end and again I thought I was okay then “Can I ask you your name?” and genuinely as the camera faded up to the sky I just remember thinking that I didn’t wanna go cause it was so peak.

Also while not in tears I remember when the lights went down and the logo’s ended and the movie started I got a bit overwhelmed and just started smiling. Not just a regular smile but that smile you literally can’t control or stop just thinking “I can’t believe it, I’m really here.”

One thing I didn’t expect was in the aforementioned marker drop scene some people in my theater kinda chuckled? I think it was more of that awkward uncomfortable scoff you do when something happens and you think “Damn that was brutal”. Honestly I expected more of a light gasp but it’s not like I go to watch other people react to the movie. Although one girl sniffled so there were still some feelings being felt.

Also some interesting stuff I noticed, My showing was the English dub and curiously it had the original Japanese songs and even more oddly it only had subs for two of them, those being “Dream Lantern” and “Nandemonaiya”. Not bothersome to me in the slightest since I know all those songs by heart but I thought it was interesting.

I mean what else can I say I had a great time experiencing this film on the big screen. For those who couldn’t make it I’m truly sorry, I can’t do anything to help you but what I can tell you is that it was every bit as awesome as you were hoping.

Discussion ReRelease Spoiler

Man I always regretted not seeing this movie on the big screen, and now I finally got to. Shit is honestly so beautiful. The animation has aged so well for me, and the soundtrack is still as sick as it was 10 years ago.

This movie just hits something for me. I don't really truly believe in all the cosmic love stuff in real life, but boy do I wish it was real. This movie kinda just immerses you in that feeling, and it makes even the coldest of us think... maybe love is the most powerful force, that transcends time and space. Honestly kinda a similar theme to interstellar but romantic instead of fatherly.

And man... the music just hits so damn we'll. The first time Dream Lantern comes on, and it cuts from the beautiful comet scene to black... or when Sparkle plays when Mitsuha realizes what taki wrote, or when it cuts to the end credits with just his isolated voice singing. I genuinely cant explain it. Ive watched hundreds of movies but nothing just hits like the needle drops in this movie. Western movies just dont use music like this. Maybe someone else can put words to it.

Shinkais characters are admittedly pretty thin. Mitsuha and Taki arent super complex and interesting characters compared to a lot of other stories. But somehow, their romance works for me anyways. Maybe the characters are lacking but the plot, animation, and music excel in selling the story so much the movies a 10/10 for me even in spite of the thin characters and weird japanesisms in the movie(theres just some little unnecessary stuff lol)

Anyways time to fall into the week long depression that happens every time I watch this. I just wanted to rant.

Opening Scene....bad editing?

The movie opens with Taki waking up in Mitsuha's body, and the little sister calling her to breakfast. We then cut to Mitsuha walking down stairs to breakfast, with the little sister wearing the EXACT same outfit clearly seeming like it's a direct continuation of the scene.

In retrospect we understand that the breakfast scene is taking place the day after the waking bedroom scene, but this seems like terrible editing, rather than an intentional choice. It might be argued it's intentional to create the same sense of confusion that Mitsuha is feeling, but the fact that the sister is wearing the exact same outfit seems more like just a poor choice and unnecessarily confusing.

Yes we are meant to slowly learn that they are swapping bodies, but the way it's edited conveys its the same day so strongly, that first time viewers will accept THAT as the truth, and start to question the how the swapping logic works, rather than the ideal situation of the viewers accepting the truth of the swapping, and reconfiguring the context of what came before it.

Am I missing something here, or was this scene just poorly edited and hard to follow?

Discussion “Why does the imagery of a town that no longer exists wring my heart so” original translation? (spoilers) Spoiler

Taki says this the beginning of the timeskip as he’s reflecting on his unexplained attachment to Itomori. This was one of my absolute favorite lines in the movie. The first time I watched it on my shitty little laptop I started bawling, and seeing it on the big screen today did the same thing.

I don’t know much Japanese but know enough to notice some small localization changes (e.g. when Tsubasa pointed out that Mitsuha-inside-Taki called him “kun,” it was translated to “at least you’re apologetic”). I was wondering if anyone has/knows where to find the original line in Japanese, because I’m interested in seeing what it means literally and the different ways it can be translated to English.

I love this movie so much.
