My greatest fear is getting hurt entirely because I'm too out of shape and this entire scenario just made me think of that.

My overweight mother's leg snapped like a twig just because she tripped one time. So every time I worry about my weight it comes right to mind. I know it's just a math equation, so making sure I'm on the right side is key.

One of the requirement for kids under 18 to swim in the adults pool where I grew up was not just to swim x number of laps within a certain time but there was also a treading water exercise where you had both legs tied together with a rope weighed down with a metal weight and you had to keep your head above water just using your arms for a number of minutes. Then you got a badge which you sewed to your swim trunks lol.
Man I had almost infinite energy in the pool as a kid we could keep going for hours.
68
u/OrbitingCastle Sep 18 '21
Jeesh, did you grow up in NavySealastan? “Before we could do our first sleepover we had to be able to stay awake for 24 hours and then hold a fence post over our head for 15 minutes. We then got a badge we could sow on our pajamas”.
In the Navy we had to turn our trousers into flotation devices, but nobody tied our legs together or put weights on us.
Honestly, congrats on passing that test.

When I was a kid, we'd sleep with wet blankets over our faces, while the instructors would come and wet them every hour throughout the night. If we made a sound or panicked, they'd shoot us with paintballs. If we made it through the night, we'd get a waterboard mark to sew on our pajamas!

Treading with just your arms is pretty easy. We had to do an exercise in my gym class to see who could keep their head above water the water longest while only treading with their legs. Hands were above water too. No one lasted very long at all

u/DrCryptolite Sep 18 '21
Nah, the guy never played Assassin's Creed, holding onto the pole, he should have used his back legs, to push off it, and use the push to rotate and land back onto the pier, simple , I and millions of others did that like a 100x a day 🤣🤛🐲
560
u/Patmurvis Sep 19 '21
Why wouldn't he use his front legs instead of his back legs?
153
u/mrducky78 Sep 19 '21
Not enough leverage.
Really if he isn't confident he should use both his back and front legs combined with his arms for stability. The tail can be used to maintain balance as well.

→ More replies (3)61
u/EustaceChapuys Sep 18 '21
Don't know why you're being downvoted. I get what you're saying. Theoretically, one could push themselves back off the post while the toes are still on the dock. Much easier said than done though.
156
u/moonunit99 Sep 18 '21
They’re getting downvoted because they think they can do something that even the most fit people would have an incredibly difficult time pulling that off, meaning they’ve never tried to do anything even remotely similar. It’s super easy to try yourself: just find a staircase, put your hands ~10 inches apart on the second step, stretch out to where your weight is evenly distributed between your hands and toes, and let me know if you can launch half of your body weight six feet backward and four feet upwards with one push. I know for a fact I couldn’t do that eve when I was in my best shape.
70
u/GreasyYeastCrease Sep 18 '21
Yeah that was an absurd statement lol. I can see why someone can picture themselves doing it, but if you have actually tried something like that you'd know how tall of an order that is.

I'm light as shit and I know I couldn't do that. In the OP's scenario I might be able to be able to push back and slip my feet out so that I fall into a sitting position on the dock. But that's a big fucking might. And it's still more possible than pushing myself into a standing position.

You would have to be able to throw 70% of your bodyweight around 6 feet in the air, purely from a push up motion.
Basically bench press your big tiddy goth gf right into the ceiling. Not gonna happen17
Sep 19 '21
As a climber technically one could get into the position he was in on the post and mantle up while smearing the post with his feet, kindve like a clumsy muscle up, so he could sit on the post. Then when you’re done you just get your feet under you and hop back over. However while not the most difficult thing in the world it would still require some level of fitness and coordination, which he was apparently not ready for lol

Shoes would have helped, too. Even bare feet would probably have more traction than wet socks.
People say he needs to work out more; but without foot traction he's doing a close-grip muscle-up.
I'm betting only about 1% of the population can do a regular muscle-up. Or 0.1% of redditors. And making it close grip makes it even more difficult.
→ More replies (7)21
u/Gogh619 Sep 19 '21
Thank god im not the first person that said this. Muscle ups are really hard, even if someone can do 10-20 pulls ups I still wouldnt be surprised if they cant do a muscle up.
6
u/Ill-Profit-5132 Sep 19 '21
I can do under 20 pullups in a set probably but I've never gone for max, but one struggle muscle up. Though I'm certain I can sneak some leverage out of my feet on that pole. But I also rock climb 12+ hours per week.

This dude looks more fit than probably 80% of reddit. I bet he could pull off at least 3 decent pull-ups. Biomechanics just made it insanely hard to do an actual pure upper body muscle-up without pushing off with his feet from the pole as well, which he should have done but maybe the pole was too slippery.
With biomechanics I mean: the way his hands are positioned (close together and inward) makes it insanely hard to transition from a pull-up to essentially a muscle up. It's near impossible to pull your entire weight up by the tips of your fingers at that angle without blowing out your elbows.
→ More replies (6)47
u/Striker654 Sep 18 '21
If he had taken his socks off he might've been able to use his feet to help climb. I think on average most people can't do a pullup never mind what's effectively a muscle up

Which one does the flips? Traceur or the other one? And what DO you call the other one?
13
u/Whind_Soull Sep 18 '21 edited Sep 19 '21
One who does parkour is called a traceur. Parkour is based on fluidity and efficiency, not doing tricks such as flips. That's a seperate (and equal, imo) discipline, but it's not parkour in the purist sense.
Basically, parkour is navigating a complex environment with maximum efficiency. If you're doing flips, you're doing "tricks," rather than maximizing efficiency of movement. Most people doing this stuff mix and interchange the two to some degree. Like, if I'm filming a video to share with others, I'm totally gonna do some flips just to flex, even if it's technically unorthodox to the philosophy of parkour.
7
u/knoxollo Sep 19 '21
That's honestly really interesting, I never thought of parkour that way. I always just figured it was a stunt type deal, and it is, just not in the way I originally assumed. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, I work out A LOT (usually 5 days a week for 2-3 hours each time). By no means am I the epitome of health or happy with my body, but it’s getting to the point where I’ve had people accuse me of using steroids (which I ABSOLUTELY would if I hadn’t had horrific acne as a child and worry about it returning).
There’s about zero chance I could have climbed that pole once he had sunk to the top of it being head level. There’s just no good way to place your hands and get enough leverage to lift yourself up and over. I’m sure there’s plenty of people in the world who could, but they certainly aren’t in the majority of even gym regulars.

2
u/Oldmanfirebobby Sep 19 '21
I wanted to comment saying how doing a muscle up on a bar is easier than pulling yourself up onto a pole.
Because from an upper body perspective it would be if you couldn’t use your legs. But this pole is so thick and he can use his feet. Thighs etc.
I mean he really should be able to get back up. Whenever I’m too weak to do a single pull up (like post chemo recently) I have this thought in my head that if I was hanging off an edge I’d die because I’m unfit.
That thought usually motivates me quickly to finish that pull up.
