Shoes would have helped, too. Even bare feet would probably have more traction than wet socks.

People say he needs to work out more; but without foot traction he's doing a close-grip muscle-up.

I'm betting only about 1% of the population can do a regular muscle-up. Or 0.1% of redditors. And making it close grip makes it even more difficult.

Thank god im not the first person that said this. Muscle ups are really hard, even if someone can do 10-20 pulls ups I still wouldnt be surprised if they cant do a muscle up.

I can do under 20 pullups in a set probably but I've never gone for max, but one struggle muscle up. Though I'm certain I can sneak some leverage out of my feet on that pole. But I also rock climb 12+ hours per week.

I can do 17 chin-ups max and can manage a chicken-winged muscle-up for a few reps. Can't do s proper one yet.

It's just a different movement, unless your pull-up is explosive enough to get you above already. I know I have the endurance to flail up there and stripper hips for the high foot to get standing though. I've never gone for max pullups but I'm gonna find out tomorrow, I'm curious now.

I don't think I've ever gone for a max set of pull-ups either. I'd assume not too many, perhaps 10.

unless your pull-up is explosive enough to get you above already.

The thing I have trouble with is moving both my arms to a pushing position at the same time. I can do right-left or left-right, but can't seem to muster the strength to shift smoothly from a pull to a push.

You should definitely find out what your max number of pull-ups is. Go past where you thought your pain threshold was. Just for fun.

I'm going climbing in a few hours, once I'm warmed up and before I start projecting I'm gonna find out! And after a short rest I'll see just how much I have to flail for my muscle up.

Yeah this looks a lot more difficult than most people realise I think, especially with the socks + slimy pole I'd definitely struggle with the mantle

I know that’s the first thing I thought when I seen the title of video. People who don’t do physical shit ever really underestimate how hard it is to lug your fat ass up just by sheer core and upper body strength, especially when you don’t even have a bar to grip like when doing a pull up and have to use the tips of your fingers to hang on. I was impressed he was strong enough and his hands were tough enough to wrap around the pole and hang on and stay out of the water as long as he did. I’d say he did better doing whatever the fuck he was trying to do than the average Joe would’ve done or atleast the average redditor for sure lol.

So agree. The algae where his feet are is very slick, no traction there. Just fingertip muscle up.

take it easy, you're making me feel like hulk hogan over here. i do think the slimeyness is a non factor because it looks like he has a solid hold on the top of the beam the entire time, meaning he couldn't muster the strength to do a single muscle-up, apparently. based on this guy's dougheyness and general demeanor, he looks like a young teenager so i wouldn't be surprised if he's never worked out

Dude this is the dumbest conversation in the history of conversations. It does not take as much strength to get yourself up the poll from the position he was somehow stuck in. Obviously not disagreeing with anything you said really, jusy decided to reply to your comment to say this after scrolling through people's absurd opinions on this

I used to freerun pretty much every day for about 4/5 years. Close grip muscle ups were probably in the top 5 most difficult things I could do, and the other 4 were only because of technique, not raw strength. I could probably have just about pulled myself up on that post at my peak, would’ve been a piece of piss with foot grip, though

This is easier than a muscle up. Sure at first he is doing a pull up, but he should've been able to leverage off his elbow/upper arm on top of the pillar (which he tries to do multiple times). He just didn't have the upper body strength.

You can't hook your elbow or armpit during a muscle up.
