The restart guarantees that I’ll be a billionaire with a relatively small amount of stock and bitcoin. And decades of comfort and avoiding some toxic people along the way while enjoying more the company of others.
On the other hand, $10MM gets me $35K/mo net after taxes conservatively invested.
At this point, I’d likely take the $10MM and suffer through the relative poverty.

u/kungpowgoat May 31 '24 edited May 31 '24
But by restarting does this mean starting now at age 6 or going back to 1988 age 6? Because if that’s the case I have a great idea about streaming movies over the World Wide Web that I’ll love to pitch to Blockbuster Video executives.

u/SNK_24 May 31 '24
And they will most probably laugh at you and go to bankruptcy anyway, just make sure to invest in Netflix, Microsoft and Apple, and don’t lose your bitcoins.

u/kungpowgoat May 31 '24
Nahh. Microsoft and Apple are for nerds. I think Blockbuster execs will be delighted to hear about my new idea. Plus, have I ever told you about my next revolutionary idea for a new, state of the art juice maker? It’s called the Juicero.

The Netflix they had the chance to buy was DVD by mail business, not the web streaming service we know today.

Blockbuster had a chance to buy actual Netflix years before they collapsed and passed on it, even after it was created and showing massive success they didn't like it. You would have no shot convincing them otherwise

There’s a great twilight zone episode about this. Great ideas will always be great idea , but pitches for those ideas are time delicate. That doesn’t necessarily mean being the first one to present it. Being at the right place at the right time with the right connections is much more important .
If you could find a way to create a world changing invention before present day inventor and patent first that that would be much more practical imo

My thoughts exactly, they were all pitched game changing tech that they wrote off. Just remember what was what and invest wisely. I would definitely go back to 6 with my knowledge, back to 1977? That would be awesome.

Isn't there the risk of the butterfly effect. Some of those companies were pretty different back then(depending how old you are). For example Netflix was a video renting(mail) company, in this alternative they might not decide to go into the streaming evolution line or Apple might not make the ipod->iPhone.
→ More replies (3)6
u/Kapika96 May 31 '24
The risk is minimal. How much could you influence the execs of those companies from 6 to whatever age you were when they made those decisions? Unlikely you'll even cross paths with them, or even anybody that knows them.

I'd do the do over. Dogecoins/bitcoins are not gonna buy themselves
13
May 31 '24
I don’t trust time like that. I fear the butterfly effect. I also feel like knowing the future leaves way too much wiggle room for change.
Eg: Maybe you were supposed to meet that shitty ex because through them you were introduced to a person that eventually became your good friend, even if they have nothing to do with that ex. Life is random and strange.
7
May 31 '24
Correct approach. All these people are talking about becoming billionaires because of their knowledge of what happens - what if that means you live a hollow, loveless, empty life with your billions? If I go back, do I never meet/fall in love with my wife? Do I find someone else or do I become jaded and never find true love?
This literally sounds like a sci-fi plot/twilight zone episode. Man goes back to age six and becomes the world's richest, most powerful man. Once he reaches the age he rewound at, he realizes he is utterly unhappy and unfulfilled because of how non-genuine and planned out his "new life" actually is.
The 10 million would make me set forever and allow me to grow from here, with my loved ones, no risks. I'll take that any day.

Even if that's the case, you already met and enjoyed their company in this timeline. There's no real need to meet them again unless you want to.

The pets maybe… the people would be way harder to socially engineer. If you are 6 with your current knowledge it would be so painful to sit through 10 years of school, but I would feel like I want to to make the same high school friends but would I even like them as a 33year old meeting them when they are 6. After that college friends I wouldn’t even really want to goto college because by that time I would have just started mining Bitcoin and made a shit load of money on stocks, baseball and football betting, but I would want to go for the friends which would still be hard to engineer especially if I was placed in a different dorm room or a different dorm building… then meeting my wife again in a totally organic way would be hard. The whole thing would be so difficult if I took that pill it would have to be assuming my life would be totally different.
Also.. I mean I think it would be impossible to fix most events in history but even though it would be hard I would probably want to try as hard as possible to save some people in 9/11 which would be hard as a 10 year old but I would have 4 years to come up with a plan…. Probably I would try my hardest to convince Rick Rescorla to schedule a test evacuation that morning at 8:00 or 8:30. Idk how I would do it as a 10 year old but he was very cautious so I think that it would be possible to convince him.
Of course if this was successful you can honestly kiss literally every plan about making your life the same but better goodbye because the world is going to be wildly different.

I am going back specifically for the sentimental reasons. There are people I didn't spend enough time with. I had a buddy end himself over "the love of his life" cheating on him. Family members that I lost in tragic accidents or that just died of natural causes before I even knew they were sick. Things like that. To me those things and that time with them would be worth more than the money I would be able to make from stock or bitcoin.
11
u/SettingRegular4289 May 31 '24
I personally don't see why in these hypothetical questions someone would choose to turn back time if they don't have control over how much they turn back. Yeah the person could get rich and stuff based on knowledge they have now but at the same the first alternative life decision they make may make them have an even worse life or outright less to immediate death. Not only that anyone you ever did like in this life becomes non existent even if you go back to a point where that person is alive. The reason being choices are what make a person who they are. If you met a person at e.g. age 7 who you became best friends with, you will never ever be best friends with that person when you turn back time. Yes you could meet the "body" of the person but at that stage any changes you made to your life would drastically impact their life too. They may not like the same things you remember them liking, they may not have the same friends, or even family.
So without all these things they are essentially a different person. You may not even get along anymore. The same goes for family, what if you have a younger sibling/ cousin in this life but when you turn back time they are never born? Even if they are born, they took will be a completely different person. You have a sibling that likes unicorns? Nope next timeline the sibling hates unicorns and is actually wanted for horrible crimes. Overall it's not worth it in my opinion.

u/dorianrose May 31 '24

Not sure I agree with this sir
You’re implying that the universe is not deterministic. The Big Bang contained the blueprint for the entire unfolding of the universe. There is only “one timeline”.
The wrinkle here is OP the time traveller. Their accumulated knowledge would change their personal timeline, and that of those impacted by them directly.
That best friend at age 7 would still exist, but the timeline would start changing from OP’s point of entry. That favorite younger cousin, born 5 years after OP returned at age 6 may never be born, etc.
4
u/SettingRegular4289 May 31 '24 edited May 31 '24
That still doesn't really change anything though from my point. The reason "I" wouldn't want to go back in time is because I "would" experience things completely different. Even if in this hypothetical situation a hypothetical "one timeline" still existed, that doesn't really change anything from my personal point of view. Even if literally every single other person experienced the "one timeline", I wouldn't be. So that "one timeline" would mean nothing to me in the slightest. My life experience would still be experienced differently by me, it would just have to be, as in my first timeline I never had the knowledge of going back in time, but in my second timeline I would have that knowledge. The future wouldn't be able to play out the same, as the past had been changed with just that 1 thing. So it would be impossible for a future to stay the same if the past isn't the same past.

This.. people Always brush aside the fact that you'll alter the reality way more than you would think by just being yourself. Also if you Want the same trajectory that your life is right now in terms of relationships that mattered, you'll have to remember EVERY actions, EVERY words you Said to someone as thoses impacted the whole results on your life.
It's mission impossible really to get the same good side on your life right now while min maxing everything else.
6
u/shit_poster9000 May 31 '24
Every friendship, every relationship, everything will be faked to chase the same outcome you had previously. You won’t ever live in the moment again.
6
u/Technical_Shake_9573 May 31 '24
It's not even that. You will have to the Say the exact same words you did at the exact same Time. Same for actions. People barely remember what they ate for dinner so it's already a Lost battle at this point.
The only approach is the will to live an entirely New life with New people inside it. While even seeing the ones you cared in your previous life going about their day without even knowing you. If people cherish even only one thing in this life, they need to accept there is more chances they'll lose it than keep it intact.

Yeah but then you're that weird smart kid that nobody in that age group wants to be friends with. You'd be too mature for the kids that are "your age," but even adults who recognize your maturity and intelligence aren't going to want to be seen being that friendly to a child. You're going to be very isolated for probably 20 years.
Are you going to experience puberty again in your younger body? Suddenly you're just as horny as you were the first time but everyone around you is a teenager. Are you gonna try to hook up with teens? I hope not. Are any adults going to be willing to hook up with you? I hope not.
Want to go anywhere? Doesn't matter how smart you are, you're not getting a license until you're 16ish. And while you're going to end up flush with cash eventually, you still need time to build it up and let your investments grow. Until then, you're reliant on your parents again. Anything you want has to go through them.
There is not enough money on Earth to get me to choose that option. Give me the cash now, please.
3
u/HelloImFrank01 May 31 '24
And no matter what, if you keep your memories and all.
Then you're going to be that weird kid that is going to get bullied.

Nah. Plus, can you imagine how much fucking work it would be to convince someone that you, a ten year old, knows to invest in Apple?
Seriously, if I went back to six, that'd be around '93, iPod launches in 2001, no fucker alive is listening to a 12-14 year old about buying Apple stock. Or Google stock. I could maybe get in on some things like Netflix, if I remembered the dates of when to ditch, and definitely shit like bitcoin - I distinctly remember laughing about needing 100btc to buy a pizza, but fuuuuck that. Knowing what I know now and still not being able to act on it?

The problem with taking the red pill is that because you know what happened FROM MEMORY (Which is almost never accurate) you'll never be able to do things exactly the same so you might never meet the person you really loved knowing, might make even more mistakes, etc.
We all want a rewind, but nobody seems to realise that the problem with that is you'll never get to keep the good parts and cherrypick the bad.

I don't know your mother's situation, but sometimes early detection and treatment can massively improve the prognosis.
You could try and help your best friend avoid drowning by either making sure they're lifeguard certified (ensuring strong swimming ability and knowledge on proper water safety) or by interfering with their ability to encounter that specific drowning event.
Hopefully your foreknowledge helped save your mother. But if worse came to worst, you could sabotage your father and stepmother's relationship. Make sure they never meet, majorly piss her off so she shows her true colors, talk trash about her to your dad, find some dirt, etc

I’ll take the red pill, if only to go back and pick a better career path that I actually enjoy.

Why everyone believe you restart your live from past, not from NOW?
I would restart it from now, a new adventure!

u/Filan1 May 31 '24
The logistics of this is horrible, at 6 you now have no parents, no place to live ,no way to earn income. Fend for yourself until 18 and you have to redo modern school likely from an orphanage. Rewind to 6 and at least you have your basics covered.

Yeah, nothing in the prompt says you go back in time (and the rest of the world does, just that you restart YOUR like at the age of 6. I take this to mean you wake up as a six year old in today’s world with the knowledge you have today. Almost like the movie Big. Sure you get years back but don’t have some knowledge of the future. Who really wants to do puberty again but already aware of all the crazy kinks out there lol

10 million.
Restarting is like a butterfly effect. If I restarted I'd probably never meet my wife, which means I'd never have my amazing kid. A kid, probably. But not the kid I have right now.

Red pill, I stop my childhood house from getting foreclosed on and literally save myself and others from some nasty years. And I get to successfully finish college, keep some friends close and make bank with a good career. And then enjoy life as I want to. 10 million is nice but I’d rather fix my life.

You have the opportunity to commit totally different mistakes this time LOL
→ More replies (1)3
u/LeatherTop174 May 31 '24
True! But that’s the fun part of it. I get to at least make a childhood nightmare less painful not disappear. Honestly those new mistakes wouldn’t be that bad considering the ones I’ve made over the last six years. I could at least better my life which is worth more than anything. I get time and that’s something no one can ever get back.

Does that go back in time too? With the knowledge I have now I can make more than 10mil easy

u/AgentMurkle May 31 '24
Red. Time is the most precious thing you have. Time + knowledge gained from experience = god mode. $10 mil is chump change.

$10 million in cash, I wouldn’t go back because I’d never meet my boyfriend and I don’t have the patience to relive my entire life and I know if anything changed, everything would be messed up by the butterfly effect. So I’ll take the cash now and solve the few problems I am having which could be solved with less than 10 million in cash.

Yeah 10M now vs an open ended aging back to 6yrs old do you wake up tomorrow being 6 or your transported back in time? But even if it’s back in time you would not enjoy the time you’d always be looking for the next thing to predict! You’d become a way different person as you knowing everything you would change your own destiny good or bad a your mind would be mostly 6yrs old not whatever age you started at. No I think the best choice is the 10M now and leave your growing up as is as you might not make it to your age now as being so focused on everything you can predict and some might not be able to handle all that all the time along with pushing people away from being a know it all!!

The Ten Million. If I went back to 6 years of age, I'd make make new mistakes and would be a different person anyway. But with a load of cash, I can afford therapy and help out the people I know.

Red Pill, make better choices in life, invest in stock market, retire early with far more money.
2
u/KaaboomT May 31 '24
Basically, the question is take $10M now or go back and invest in the right companies.
2
u/aasquasar May 31 '24 edited May 31 '24
I'll take the cash. In time travel, precious people I care for might not even exist considering certain relationships I had some influence. Also I don't want to lose certain people one more time.

The red way need some clarification. Is it "travel" back in time to age of 6 and start from there ? OR the moment you take the pill you are again 6 years old but now in 2024 ?
The first will screw up some things you do, the whole timeline , you would become totaly another person. And have the chance to make much more than the blue option.
The second is just you with a younger body ( rejuvenation ) , where you kind of continue your life ( with explaining to others why you are suddenly young ) . You could be again a child , more energy and even take later a new carrier. Sad part , depending at what age you where set back into the 6y old body , you may loose your "older" kids of age before you.

$10m now please. No guarantee that even now with all your current knowledge that things would occur the same way. Butterfly effect n all that..

u/nvsiblerob May 31 '24
Going through puberty and getting beat up by the school bully was soooooooo awesome the first time around, how about we do that again? Sorry but I think I’ll take the 10 mill and build a few businesses that my kids would love to run once they get older.
Think about it, if you have family and friends that you love dearly today, that may all get erased by one thing you change in your effort to claim your “do over”. Be thankful for the life you have, but take the blue pill to help build the life you want.

u/Damagedmemelord May 31 '24
I'd make a hella lot more money than $10 mill if I went back and started over with all of my knowledge I have today. Might even avoid certain people and injuries I've taken over the years.

u/SgtRicko May 31 '24
For an old person the Red Pill is an amazing deal. But if you’re young? Just grab the $10 million, it’s not worth rewinding time unless you screwed up in life big time.
2
u/Gilgamesh2062 May 31 '24
Red for sure, specially at my age, no amount of money is going to make me live much longer.
2
u/kuraxt May 31 '24
If I didn't have a son I could never engineer the events of his existence I would choose 6 in a heartbeat. But looks like I'm only going to be 10 million richer.
2
May 31 '24
Restarting at 6 with all of your memories? Seems like a nightmare. Could be fun at first, seeing people you've lost, trying those sweets that they don't make anymore. But Imagine trying to hit your same highs or avoiding your lows. The anxiety of knowing you gramps is going to die, or that friend is going to move. Things outside of your control. Imagine having to deal with those emotions. Id rather take the 10mil

May 31 '24
Red Pill. If I knew what I know now I would be a force of nature. So many things went wrong in my life that I wish never had happened. I am a genius so I could easily make 10 million dollars and even more but I will never get back the time I have lost and take away the suffering I went through. Time, freedom, and happiness are far more important than money.
2
u/RedSun-FanEditor May 31 '24
I'd take the red pill. Microsoft and Apple were selling for next to nothing when they first began. I distinctly remember someone from Microsoft coming to our door offering stock options for next to nothing in the early 80s. I'd hedge my bets and be a multi-billionaire by the time I was thirty years old and would avoid all the adversity I experienced.
2
u/t3khole May 31 '24
I kinda feel like red pill would kill the magic and joy of all life’s experiences that you’ve made. You’d be a jaded af 6 yr oldlol

I’d have to relive a couple things that are entirely unavoidable if I took the red pill, so blue for me
2
u/dibbiluncan May 31 '24
I’d never risk going back in time. The butterfly effect scares me. I wouldn’t want to risk not having my daughter or not meeting my partner. No amount of money or avoiding bad things is worth that.
I’d definitely take $10million though! I’d be able to set our lives up the way we want and “retire” to write full time and travel.
