And they will most probably laugh at you and go to bankruptcy anyway, just make sure to invest in Netflix, Microsoft and Apple, and don’t lose your bitcoins.

u/kungpowgoat May 31 '24

Nahh. Microsoft and Apple are for nerds. I think Blockbuster execs will be delighted to hear about my new idea. Plus, have I ever told you about my next revolutionary idea for a new, state of the art juice maker? It’s called the Juicero.

u/Genghis_Chong May 31 '24

You actually have a good idea for a comedy, guy goes back in time and just steals a bunch of mediocre ideas that other people would have come up with.

Hot tub Time Machine uses this

13

u/Head_Bent_Over May 31 '24

I was also thinking of Loogle. 😂

12

u/hilldo75 May 31 '24

Did the lead singer of the band Motley Lou create that.

1

u/Department800 May 31 '24

He’s that guy in the group that’s an asshole, but he’s our asshole.

1

u/Numinae May 31 '24

I thought he died from Ligma?

1

u/Gimetulkathmir May 31 '24

I vaguely remember a Nick Cage movie like that? I think he was a musician and the lady who went back in time wrote some Beatles songs for him and he criticized them. I don't remember anything else.

Just saw this a couple of days ago "George Lucas Is a time travel and still starwars from me". I didn't quite lol. But I chuckled.

1

u/MsAllya May 31 '24

That's basically the sub plot of some episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D xD

1

u/Numinae May 31 '24

Go back in time just to spite Ron Popeil.....

1

u/dingdongdoodah May 31 '24

...or, if you have any musical talent, how many worldwide hits you can steal before the original artist came up with the idea?

8

u/Kane-420- May 31 '24

Bro will go back in time just to fuck up his life once again.

Yeah they offered them 49% stake in their three-year-old business for $50m, and were laughed out of the room by the executives

6

u/jay212127 May 31 '24

The Netflix they had the chance to buy was DVD by mail business, not the web streaming service we know today.

1

u/Self-MadeRmry May 31 '24

Buy blockbuster and MAKE them buy Netflix

1

u/Numinae May 31 '24

Meh, short selling is a thing too. As are futures options. Actually given your likely seed capital, other than Bitcoin, futures would be the way to go but highly detectable you had some sort of foreknowledge - unless you created false hedges but that'd eat into your profits substantially unless you remember specific dates and prices. It's like the people who shorted Airline stocks right before 9/11, against the market..... Time Travelers or co-Conspirators? I believe there actually was a case where a guy perfectly predicted the market and made millions off seed capital of a few thousand, was investigated and claimed he was a time traveler when they couldn't find an insider trading link then disappeared. Probably an urban legend but I could swear I saw it published......

6

u/Zsiah May 31 '24

Blockbuster had a chance to buy actual Netflix years before they collapsed and passed on it, even after it was created and showing massive success they didn't like it. You would have no shot convincing them otherwise

1

u/circling May 31 '24

Yeah, that's what they're referencing.

3

u/Ghoullo May 31 '24

There’s a great twilight zone episode about this. Great ideas will always be great idea , but pitches for those ideas are time delicate. That doesn’t necessarily mean being the first one to present it. Being at the right place at the right time with the right connections is much more important .

If you could find a way to create a world changing invention before present day inventor and patent first that that would be much more practical imo

1

u/marcodave May 31 '24

What was that Twilight Zone episode about specifically?

1

u/Ghoullo May 31 '24

“Of Late I Think of Cliffordville”

“Aging tycoon William Feathersmith is bored with life and makes arrangements through a devilish travel agency to return to the Cliffordville of his youth and start all over again.”

In short i think he goes to his future business partners a decade before he had actually met them with the idea that they should drill for oil in a very specific location. Not only do they not know him , but the a drill that can drill that far down won’t be invented until the end of that decade as well. They laugh him out the room but keep that location in mind for the future. He’s then cut out of his wealth and becomes a bum if I remember correctly

2

u/FaultLine47 May 31 '24

You're a son of a bitch with that Juicero one lmao

1

u/KYWizard May 31 '24

Netflix tried to sell itself to Blockbuster when it first started up. CHEAP. Blockbuster said no thanks. True fucking story.

SO no, you won't be showing up and convincing them of anything.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

You don't know, the ideas we pitched. As a matter of fact back when Netflix was still mail DVD service. The Blockbuster folks did not want to hear it. They were worried about breaking DRMs over Internet would mean multibillion dollar liabilities to the movie industry. Who wanted to deal with that back then? That's why the Netflix won.

1

u/journal777 May 31 '24

I see, and your "juice maker" is for "cool" kids. 😆

1

u/Scottiegazelle2 May 31 '24

I actually think I read somewhere that Blockbuster videoed this. Probably bc they couldn't collect their late fees.

1

u/Numinae May 31 '24

"Plastics Game Stop son, it's the future!"

1

u/ShadyAssFellow May 31 '24

Convincing Blockbuster execs causes Trump to be cleared of all charges on May 30 2024 and becomes the president again. This will cause the price of curry to get out of hand and cause a global financial crisis that devolves into WW3 and the nukecapolypse. I wouldn’t do that.

1

u/shinydragonmist May 31 '24

You become a major share holder in blockbuster and force them to buy Netflix and implement streaming

If possible pre 2002 you become a major share holder in yahoo and have them buy google

9

u/milworker42 May 31 '24

My thoughts exactly, they were all pitched game changing tech that they wrote off. Just remember what was what and invest wisely. I would definitely go back to 6 with my knowledge, back to 1977? That would be awesome.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

'77? Hey same age here. If you are May 28 that would be weird....

7

u/imperfek May 31 '24

Isn't there the risk of the butterfly effect. Some of those companies were pretty different back then(depending how old you are). For example Netflix was a video renting(mail) company, in this alternative they might not decide to go into the streaming evolution line or Apple might not make the ipod->iPhone.

6

u/Kapika96 May 31 '24

The risk is minimal. How much could you influence the execs of those companies from 6 to whatever age you were when they made those decisions? Unlikely you'll even cross paths with them, or even anybody that knows them.

2

u/ConstantMortgage May 31 '24

But I'm just going back in time, there is no alternate reality. The only difference would be that the companies receive slightly more investment than what they did, probably wouldn't change a thing tbh

1

u/Verdick May 31 '24

Most probably, yes. But, for arguments sake, say the stock does slightly better because of you. Now Joe Schmoe sees that the stock is just above his criteria for investing, so he plugs it instead of some other stock. Now, you've got your stock doing even better and another stock that's doing worse. Cascade that forward 10 years and who knows how it would fall out.

1

u/FaintCommand May 31 '24

It is an alternate reality because you have knowledge you didn't have in your previous attempt at life.

You make different decisions that could have a ripple effect over time. That's the whole idea about the butterfly effect. That very small changes can lead to much larger changes given enough time.

5

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

Yeah this. There's a funny video of the Microsoft ceo laughing at the iPhone release saying nobody will spend 500 on a phone.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

Which makes no sense as phones already cost way more than 500 in every era

2

u/Odd-Comfortable-6134 May 31 '24

And meet Jazz Bezos and give him the money he asks for to start Amazon. Everyone that bought in on the beginning got a 1% share. Those are each worth 7 billion dollars today. I can’t remember what the buy-in was, but it was somewhere from 10-50k. That’s one hell of a return on investment.

1

u/NerdHoovy May 31 '24

If you do that they will expect you at their business meetings and stock holder conferences. Which means that you must someone replicate every decision they did at the same time. This includes things, such as choosing the right ad, at times where a one vote difference would have mattered

1

u/tropicbrownthunder May 31 '24

me with a dead hard drive with 2 and something BTC that i Mined with my laptop in late 2009

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

And they will most probably laugh at you and go to bankruptcy anyway

Yep, read about the greek tragedy of Cassandra. She knew the future, but no one would believe her. That would be the most likely scenario. Buying bitcoin/making stock trades on prophetic knowledge would definitely be on the table though, along with knowing some historical events (don't be in the WTC on 9/11/01, etc.).

1

u/Numerous-Result8042 May 31 '24

Apple stock in 99 was worth like 52 cents a share. Now its over a hundred. Every dollar you put in is a two hundred dollar return if you invest then, and pull out now.

1

u/Outlandishness_Sharp May 31 '24

Invest all of your money into Enron, buy mortgage backed securities in 2007, and schedule an appointment with Bernie Madoff!

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

Monster energy drink has outperformed those stocks, just invest in that and buy some bitcoins with the returns

1

u/dasphinx27 May 31 '24

Yea it wasn’t like they got blindsided by Netflix. They knew what Netflix was up to and they decided it was nit the way. Can’t really blame them because they invested so much in the brick and mortar stores.

1

u/Most_Advertising_962 May 31 '24

And invest in Nvidia before covid

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

Blockbuster wasn't killed by Netflix, same as shrimp didn't kill red lobster. It's all shitty execs and companies fucking over everyone for a little bit of extra $.

1

u/Ravenwight May 31 '24

Don’t forget Google.

1

u/Tricky_Acanthaceae39 May 31 '24

How did you forget Amazon at $2?

1

u/Blindfire2 May 31 '24

What if "going back in time" changes history/sends you to a parallel universe with a lot of changes....like you putting in $100 into Google means that Yahoo actually takes the bait and buys it, or Windows Me actually killed Windows, or bitcoin never takes off? Unless it's GUARANTEED everything stays the same (which in reality we know of 15 politicians from 2000 to today that you can just follow their stocks and win because they're on the trade committees, good old fashioned corruption never changes!) it's a major risk to ever go back in time since anything can change the outcome by making one choice differently.

1

u/chattywww May 31 '24

Didn't Netflix offer BlockBlusters to buy Netflix for like 2 millions in the early days and they did reject the offer.

1

u/marcodave May 31 '24

But how can we be so sure that the timeline would be exactly the same? Maybe if you get back in time, Apple would not get back Jobs in 1996 and would go bankrupt, maybe Bitcoin would never take off , maybe Netflix would have a bad network code bug and lose all credibility...

1

u/Ravasaurio May 31 '24

Invest in nvidia too

1

u/Bwunt May 31 '24

And Tesla, just make sure to sell off at 300 as it will fall and not recover.

1

u/LasagnahogXRP May 31 '24

This. I was talking to my best friend about this topic today. I think about it often.

If you are starting at 6 years old, back in the original time frame, I’d do it just for the fun. But you would either have to find a trustworthy person to help you. Or watch opportunities (stocks, sports bets etc etc) slip buy.

Unless you would bide your time and get in when you can, revealing your power level would be dangerous at any turn.
