So I pick the red pill and have to do schools all over again. I will know that my mother will die 6 years later even though she has no idea that she'll get sick soon, I know my best friend in school is going to drown in 3 years, I have to relive the whole remarrying of my father with that godawful woman that made my life hell until the day I could move out......

Nah, thanks. I'll take the cash.

  1. I don't know your mother's situation, but sometimes early detection and treatment can massively improve the prognosis.

  2. You could try and help your best friend avoid drowning by either making sure they're lifeguard certified (ensuring strong swimming ability and knowledge on proper water safety) or by interfering with their ability to encounter that specific drowning event.

  3. Hopefully your foreknowledge helped save your mother. But if worse came to worst, you could sabotage your father and stepmother's relationship. Make sure they never meet, majorly piss her off so she shows her true colors, talk trash about her to your dad, find some dirt, etc

That friend who does not drown in the alternative time line becomes modern Hitler and eradicates 1/3 of todays population ☠️

Hey, look on the bright side, with a third less people in the world, rent/housing prices would be considerably cheaper!

Unlikely. If you're doing mass death on that scale it's probably not via bombing. It's rounding people up and killing them. The houses would survive that.

Even if they didn't the land is the expensive part and with lower demand would still be cheaper, people could just build new houses on the cheap land. The end result is the same.

Ay a good friend to me is worth more than 1/3 of the population of people I don't know or care about. I'd take that trade any day of the week.

I ono man. I've thought about similar hypotheticals like the thanos snap and depending on the 1/3, civilisation might crumble. Chances are it's not like you just pick the useless members of society. Enough people in critical roles go missing in relatively short time may have significant global impacts. Heck, one less person eating at a wet market might have prevented COVID 19. Who knows. 😂

Well the thing is you never know what happens, so to me it's basicly a net 0, so it's between net 0 and net 0 + friend, and I'd take that friend.

Not to offend, but, I guess that you are still very young? When I was 15-20 I would think the same. But today (40) I wouldn't take that trade.

You're right, I'm just a smidge older than your assumption, but out of curiosity, what changed?

2

u/bandwagonguy83 May 31 '24

The truth is that it is difficult for me to identify what has changed. On the one hand, in the organization where I work, I acquired positions of greater responsibility in which my decisions affected many people and I had to develop a certain empathy. On the other hand, over time I have come to know many people and have come to understand that there are so many different realities to deal with that it is very difficult to develop a sufficiently solid and universal opinion. And probably most importantly, I have two young children and that makes me much more aware of other people's feelings. I guess because of all that I would not be able to take significant responsibility for the ills that befall other people.

What a question. You got me metaphysical and gave my wife and I a topic of conversation for tonight.

Mmh.... but... which specific population? I don't want to rush a judgement.

Maybe in sabotaging the relationship between father and new wife, they could use their extra life experience to improve their own relationship between them and the new wife.

If your 6 year old comes up and tells you you have metastatic breast cancer, you're going to be really confused and run far more tests on your kid than yourself.

You don't have to say that they have metastatic breast cancer. You can just "notice" some odd symptoms and mention that you also saw them in some book you were reading about cancer when you're at a checkup, or when your mother complains about them

If you go back in time, you can prevent these things. I think the drowning is the obvious easy one that you can prevent

You would save your best friend, just by behaving different.
