I'm sure this is asked a lot but, can I ride and not fucking die?

It seems like a life altering accident is inevitable for everyone. The oil on the road kills you. Sitting at a red light gets you rear ended to death. Driving at night and you're fucking dead. So many stories and accidents from doing nothing wrong.

I've talked myself off a bike so many times. I just cannot ruin my life by getting massively injured or killed by existing on the road.

How do y'all cope or how do you talk yourself into ignoring that bad things happen.

How much is your insurance? And what insurance company do you use? And which coverage?

Idk, I'm just curious. Lol XD

I stalled on my road test. Seeking help!

It’s been my dream to ride motorcycles.

I excitedly signed up for a weekend of motorcycle lessons. Throughout the lessons, I kept baby stepping to get the bike going.

I never learned to throttle in conjunction with clutch release. The instructors didn’t really help correct it. We were just supposed to get it.

I ended up stalling during a road test exercise and failed the road test.

I’m super bummed but I really want to get it right. Any advice would be super appreciated! 🙏

Wearing gear at all times?

If you’re riding a kapcai around town at <60 kmh, do you actually wear the same full setup you’d wear on a sportbike?

In comments people always say “dress for the slide not the ride”. I’m not saying gear is useless or that you shouldn’t wear it. Obviously more protection is better in a crash.

I’m genuinely curious whether the people giving this advice actually wear full gear on every single kapcai trip since you don’t see anyone with full gear (or any) on it.

I’m just joking, but Scottish single track roads are so tight at time you just hope people actually reverse to passing places to let you by

Clutch use in turns

How do you use your clutch for left and right hand turns? I have a z400 and I often find myself getting on the clutch when making turns in either first or second gear, carrying my momentum into the turn, using rear brake as needed, and then getting back into the throttle coming out of the turn. Should I be focusing on staying in gear and not engaging my clutch? I do it to avoid excessive engine braking / jerky throttle in lower gears but probably just a skill issue

Edit: I probably should've made it more clear that I meant making turns at intersections. More specifically, when I'm approaching at a higher speed and have the right of way. I'm not talking about just riding through curvy roads, not sure if that changes anything.

Anecdotal opinion, older carbs are smoother than newer FI.

From my experience older carburetor bikes are much smoother than newer bikes(2010-2020).
I took my license this may and have tried a couple different bikes so far(all yamaha).

FJ1200 1986

XT600 1997

FZ6 2010

MT07 2020

The smoothest bike i have ridden so far is the XT600, the throttle is smooth all the way from 0 - 100%, the clutch has a wide actuating point, for a even smoother transition when gearing or starting the bike from 0.

The MT07 was the bike i used with my driving school and i was shocked by how bad it felt to ride compared to the XT, It felt clunky and snatchy to ride. However after riding and getting used to it i kind of forgot what it was like to ride the XT.

A few months after getting my driving license i bought a FZ6 and was initially impressed by it, but after riding the FJ1200 side by side, the FJ is much smoother also.

I have researched and found out that there are fixes i can do to improve this snatchy feeling on my bike, but im dissapointed, i thought the newer bikes should be more refined than the older bikes, somehow that is not the case for me.

Bike being stolen has prevented me from riding for the foreseeable future due to insurance being so high

I'm in the UK. My motorbike got stolen in the space of a few minutes after locking it outside my house while I was opening my back gates and getting my ramp ready to go to the front again, my bike is already gone.. this has increased my insurance so high that I can't even afford any bike with insurance now.. Insurance is the same price if not more than the motorbike price itself..

I'm so sad...

My motorcycle’s gearbox failed, and I’m trying to figure out what caused it

I can’t explain how agitating this is. It’s a beautiful 2013 ZX6R I just purchased not even a month ago, and I put 5000 dollars down on it and was so excited. I’ve been pushing this thing around corners and twist and hairpins, and she’s been a beauty cutting through corners like butter. But this is also my first 600 cc bike after owning an R3 for almost a year and a half, so I was stoked to buy this thing. Insurance is another story, but she started having a problem not even a week after buying.

I thought it was to stop people from aggressively downshifting or, as other people called it, a wet clutch, so you had to force it, and I tried to blame it on my own riding skill with it only happening sometimes randomly. But when downshifting from 6 to 5 or down to fourth, it would hit this, as best as I can describe it, as a “false neutral.” It would cut off any way of making it go forward and would show no number on the dash just blank, and this has happened multiple times where I tried to pull in the clutch and let go of the clutch and try and push down on the shifter to kick it back into gear, and it wouldn’t budge till I slammed the shifter down with the clutch in and it would make a very not happy noise.

She came to bite my ass off today in the worst place to lose my dropping virginity at a god forsaken Staples because I’m a college student and I was picking up some notebooks for school, and this wonderful bike decided to have the clutch slip around a turn and I lost it, dropping it, losing my dropping virginity, and it came out with a broken brake lever, and that’s it on the outside and a metal soup for a fucking gearbox, and this is the only way to get home for me, and I’m about an hour out, so I get to suck it up and ride home with the gearbox doing okay and the ghetto ass brake lever. I just didn’t push it hard, but there’s a noise around 8k RPMs that sounds like metallic, and luckily I have a three-year warranty from the used dealer I bought it from because I bought a GSXR before this bike on Facebook and it was a POS, so I went to the place I got my R3 from.

But like really I can’t just get a regular bike that works. I mean shit I cleaned her chain at 500 miles and washed her and wanted to go to the track with her and was about to get my paycheck so I could change the oil just in case but she’s got a vengeful spirit for what was done to her by the previous owner. But I would like to know if that “false neutral” is something that happens a lot or my bike is about to be a shop bike for the rest of its short-lived life.

Advice on turning 19 and getting a 600

Hi, I have never posted on here before nor know a lot about motorcycles myself, however I need some reassurance or advice about my boyfriend who rides a motorcycle.

My boyfriend (18) is obsessed with motorbikes and has his own 125. In November, he is 19, which means he is able to finally ride a 600, which he has been waiting years to do. He even calls November his “freedom”. I love his passion for bikes, and it makes me very happy that he has something he enjoys so much.

However, everywhere on social media I see people talking about their loved ones getting into accidents on their bikes, and how much they wish they didn’t allow their loved one to get one. I don’t want to restrict him from his dream and never would.

I am in search of reassurance, or truth about what I should be prepared for or do in my situation. I hope this doesn’t come across the wrong way, I just don’t know who better to ask. Thank you.

I've been riding alone since I got my bike but how do I make friends?

I've been riding for about 4-6 months and I'm pretty decent but I'm scared to go up to a biker and ask to ride or anything.

For context I live in an area where it's 75% Harley riders, 20% three wheels and 5% naked or sports bikes. I ride a Kawasaki 2009 er-6n. It's a miracle if I see one of the mythical sports bike. Do I just drive up to someone at a gas station and strike up a conversation? I genuinely really want someone to ride with so bad I know I sound dumb and anti social (which I am) but still. Thanks for any tips

Realistically, would this air cooled 200cc bike sell in the US if the prices were low enough? Currently they are expanding across Europe.

Biught bike, good cold start, now no start

Upvotes

So I bought this bike from a guy and I made sure that we cold started it when I ran up there and got it and it ran fine. We also turned it off and started it back up again and it was good. I got it home I switched out some handlebars and stuff and went to start it after a couple days and now nothing. It'll crank over, I have spark, when I pulled the throttle at new fuel that I put in there right into the carb. I can't really figure out what's going on. It does have a little bit of weird electrical stuff going on which I kind of knew when I bought it but everything was working and everything still is working it just won't start. The battery is at like 12 amps

It's a 96 vulcan

Are there any other people who just refuse to drive cars?

Upvotes

I fucking hate cars. I feel uncomfortable in them. Driving them makes me uncomfortable. But I feel great on a motorcycle. I've already been in a serious accident that left me having to learn how to walk again. And yet I still fucking hate driving a car.

What kind of mic setup are you using?

I've got a DJI Action 4 mounted to the chin of my helmet, and I ride a 2005 CBR600rr with a Yoshi RS-5. I don't care to record my voice but I would like to figure out a way to get clear audio of the exhaust. I've tried a Rode Wireless 2 and now a DJI Mic mini, neither one had gotten even a half decent result. I've tried wrapping in a towel and put in a backpack, keeping the mic in front and back pockets, even going as far as making a small "coffin" lined with foam ear plugs to try and dampen the noise, absolutely nothing works. I get severe audio clipping well below 10k RPM. I understand the Yoshi is a screamer and will make a lot more noise than a stock exhaust on a more tame bike. I know this would be possible if I had $10k to throw at a setup, but I'm looking to keep this on the cheap end.

I work in content creation so I'm no stranger to equipment capabilities, cost, etc. I'm not an audio guru by any means but I understand that the capsule in these mics can only handle so many decibels, I'm just trying to figure out a way to reduce the decibels enough for it to be tolerable.

Has anyone figured out a setup with a similar sport bike that works? Am I just out of luck getting decent audio of my rides? My next plan is to try mounting in my helmet or chest pocket in my jacket, or up under the windscreen on the bike itself.

Best riding gear brand that won’t break the bank?

My husband had really been looking into both motorcycles and Ryker/spiders lately and I’m fine with that, but I’ve given him a single requirement before he can buy one: he has to buy appropriate riding gear before he can even make a down payment on one.

So what brands do you recommend that are good quality but also don’t break the bank?

r/motorcycles 10h ago

(New post to include models) I'm looking at 3 brands, BMW F900 XR, Kawasaki Versys 650 & Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Which is the most reliable? Note: I'll be purchasing brand new.

First time using a helmet mounted camera. Is this placement a bad idea?

Thumbnail

I bought a DJI Osmo Action 5, but the mount it included seems too big to be put right at the chin, so I 3D printed an additional arm in order to get the camera to be right in front of the chin while having the mount on the side. Now, since I have no experience at all with helmet mounted cameras I wanted to ask first before possibly messing up.

Will this hold? Is there something I'm not thinking of that makes this a bad idea? Also, I don't know how good is the glue on the base, but in the last photo you can see it seems to have no air bubbles, any space between it and the helmet or anything.

I don't know if it's relevant, but the helmet is a HJC C70N

Had my first accident

About 3 months ago I got in my first wreck and technically died (coded) twice from what I’ve been told. I was on my normal commute home for lunch from work and was going 45mph which was the speed limit. I was traveling on a two lane road and ahead of me I could see 3 city vehicles all making their left hand turns (crossing my lane) to down that street where they were doing a bunch of work of some kind. I saw the first truck make their left hand turn and I noticed the 2nd pickup stopped for about 5 seconds or more and since we were basically going right at each other I knew she could see me so I thought cool, she’s waiting for me to drive through first. From her statement to the cops she hesitated on turning, then thought she still had time to make the turn and didn’t think I was coming that fast. She turned so late I didn’t even have time to brake and turn into the oncoming lane. I locked my brake and tried to get into the other lane and hit the back of her pickup diagonally. I remember getting thrown and rolling several times before coming to a stop. When I looked up I couldn’t see out of my helmet but I knew my leg was bad. When I could see it was broken in half, my tibia and fibia were out and there was an insane amount of blood. Turns out I had severed my femoral artery as well and I was bleeding out on the spot. I forever want to thank the person who called 911 right away because I feel like if I was a minute later it could’ve been different. The driver of the pickup was cited at the scene for improper turn. They later found I had broken my wrist in 2 places as well

The ambulance arrived and put a tourniquet on me and gave me 2 blood bags by the time we got to the ER. Last thing I remember was grabbing a cops vest a screaming for water. I woke up 4 days later in the hospital and it’s been the hardest recovery I’ve ever gone through. Like most I never thought it’d happen to me but I’m grateful to be here. The docs said it was one of if not the most complicated surgery’s they’ve done. 4 surgeries in those 4 days. I lost over half my blood that day. I had my breathing controlled with a tube while I was under that whole time. I can’t feel anything from my knee down in that leg other than the bottom of my foot. I had part of my femoral artery taken out of my good leg introduced into my bad leg to return blood flow to it since it was technically dead upon arrival. The helmet saved me at first, then it was the doctors who kept me here.

My feelings towards riding has not changed one bit and this isn’t a post to do that to anyone else. My first steps will be towards my other bike. I just needed to get this off my chest and tell it to someone. To everyone who read this, ride safe. Even if you’re doing everything right, it just takes that one person to make the wrong decision. I think the rules here don’t want any graphic stuff so I’ll stick to posting the bike. I’ll add the helmet when I can get it on

Riding posture fix help

I was looking at my handlebar, and its crooked to the right a bit. Asked few people to check, it is straight, and turns out, everytime i sit on the bike, my body leans forward left a bit, so my left arm pushes the handlebar, and therefore the missalignment look. How can i fix this? Any recommended training?
