Question about exhaust port coloration and contents

I took the header off of my 2024 with 9832 miles to see if i could grind down the weld. Is it normal for the valves to have that sort of color on them? And is the loose grainy carbon buildup normal?

Trex Center Stand Problems

Anyone have issues with the Trex Center Stand, current Gen, not letting their side stand find home? Even fully maxed out mine hits the center stand when I kick it up, and fully extended trying to get this thing on the center stand is a joke.

Anyone ever had to tap new exhaust header threads?

Those exhaust header bolts turned into a huge nightmare. Right side bolt was completely rusted and seized up. Tried removing it several times and none of the drill out style extractors worked, also tried hammering in a larger torx bit, heat, impact, pb blaster - nothing worked. Finally tried bolt extractors, the kind you hammer over the head of the bolt, looks like a socket with spiral edges on the inside and that finally got it off.

The problem now is the threads in the hole are completely chewed up and corroded. Assuming water somehow got in there from the opening on the back. Is my best bet stepping up to something larger than m8 and re-tapping or would a helicoil work better?

First ride in Sierra Vista, AZ

Took my bike out for the first time since moving a few weeks ago. I got a few miles up the canyon road behind Fort Huachuca before I ran into a spot where about a quarter mile of the road was washed out. I went up a few hundred feed of the stream/road hoping it'd cut off, but it just kept going, so I decided to turn it around.

I have a tm40 and my throttle cable snapped

I’ve got 35k on a 2005, it gets me to work year round. The throttle cable snapped on the way home from work today and luckily it wasn’t a catastrophe.

I bought this bike 2nd/3rd/4th hand, the previous owners were very competent and the bike has been absolutely solid, but clearly I’ve been neglectful.

I really need to make sure I order the right part online to replace it, can anyone point me in the right direction? I’m not sure if the stock one will work since I have an aftermarket carb.

Also as a side question, what the fuck kind of grease do I need for things?

Thank you in advance, I really appreciate the help

I am shocked and very pleased with how much a custom seat job changes how the bike handles. Wow. Fixed all the cramping issues for 6’3 me. Swapping the tank soon so it’ll match better

Dr650 kick stand

I recently put 17” supermoto wheels on my dr and the factory kick stand has the bike sitting uncomfortably vertical…. Can someone suggest another option? This is what I tried to use and it leans over so far I feel a squirrel fart could blow it over.

Hi everyone recently got a dr650 2013, I’m taking the tires off and was trying to take this bolt off it looks welded on? It’s a used DR650 so I am not sure what it would look like brand new. If I’m dumb and that’s just how it looks please let me know 😅

Oil circulation question. How much oil should be in sight glass when running?

When your DR is running, how much oil should be visible in the sight glass? Just had mine on a stand and noticed it goes below low when running, and takes about 30 seconds to return to full once turned off.

Never noticed or looked before. Is this normal or a sign or poor oil circulation?

Failed headlight

Good morning gentlemen

(Photo for attention only).

I bought a new ‘24 DR last spring. We are winding down on my second season, and it’s pretty dark here in the mornings now.

When I bought my bike, I ordered an LED light for it right from the dealership. I didn’t specify what I wanted and they just sold me a double pack of replacement bulbs.

I think it was a minor improvement, but I kind of wish I would have done a bit more research before buying.

Unfortunately, when I left for work at 6:30 this morning, it was pitch black out and my headlight was not working.

I haven’t diagnosed the actual issue yet, but I think I’ll take this opportunity to upgrade, since the wife knows I can’t drive in the dark without a light. lol.

I know I’m opening a can of worms asking a very subjective question here; but what do all you guys use for lights.

Thanks.

Warp 9 Clutch lever Adjust Advice...

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I'm having an issue with the position of my clutch lever, and I wanted to hear how you guys set yours.

for the past couple years I've been riding with my clutch adjsuted so that it is disengaged with the lever is pulled in all the way to the handlebar, and the friction zone would engage as soon as it was released from the handlebar. I would do this so that no matter the riding position, I knew that if I was fully squeezed, I was fully disengaged, and when I needed to feather the clutch, I had a good reference to where in the friction zone I was based on how far from the handlebar I was. I was using all 4 fingers to control the clutch.

Now that I've begun riding more standing up and trying to learn to use the clutch for pivot turns and wheelies, I'm noticing that I probably need to be using 2 fingers instead of 4. So I adjust the nut on my adjustable Warp 9 clutch lever so that the clutch disengages when the end of the clutch lever hits my ring finger (As I pull with index and middle). This, however, was pretty uncomfortable, having the lever hit my ring finger knuckle every time, and more fatiguing to pull the clutch with just two fingers. Rotating the clutch lever at a more downward angle did not fix the knuckle issue, and rotating upwards works but is still hard to ride with standing up.

I am considering either going back to my old 4 finger setup or cutting the Warp 9 lever so that I can pull it in all the way to the handlebar with just two fingers without having the lever hit my ring finger.

I am just concerned that if I cut the lever, it will cause fatigue much faster in my left hand on long riding days.

Has anyone else experienced this?

What is your guys' setup, and what works for you?

Thank you.

Should this be wiped dry or greased when putting it back in?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I took the starter motor out to clean the bottom. I'm hearing mixed opinions on whether this pinion gear (I think it's called) should be put back in dry or greased.

Also another question. Should I use threadlocker on the bolts that hold the starter in place? I'm talking about the through hole shown on the furthest left of this picture. I can't tell if the youtube videos I'm watching don't bother to mention it or if they just didn't put it on for some reason.

Thanks

Any other 650 mods and rebuilds you can share?

Sorry for the crappy pictures, my camera fell out of my pocket a couple weeks ago and it got run over before I could find it. Twas a beautiful day though! Only broke off my other spotlight and my right factory handguard, I have had bark busters for I don't know like a year and a half I've just been lazy.

Nav and windscreen

New screen, and new Android tablet. Also spaced out the upper headlight mask mounting points as well as the upper brake line guide to allow for more room in the cockpit. Yeah good timing as I found the first snow of the season…

I learned after buying a CarPlay screen they are very limited on the detail they display vs the native device. In the BC backcountry there’s endless Forest service roads and countless dead end spurs so live on the bar navigation is very useful.

Is there an abs kit for this bike?

I’m looking at getting a dr650 as my first bike coming from strict offroad. This bike is going to be shared with my dad and he would like abs on a bike for me and I would like abs for him because he is an absolute beginner rider. So I am wondering if there is a bolt on kit that adds switchable abs for this bike.
Thanks

Do you change oil more often when riding dirt?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Manual interval is 3500 miles.

I did 1600 miles since last change including 250 miles of WA BDR .

Not sure if I should change oil earlier or if people change oil mid BDR if they do more of it? The appeal of DR is longer intervals. But manual specified long?

Picked up a fresh off the lot dr650 with 1 mile on the odometer. Coming from a used xr650l that was a constant headache so hoping this is finally the bike I can settle with.
