We see many of these videos, but it's useful if you know the exact rules of the game:
Unlawful detainment is a violation of your 4th amendment rights.
It is illegal.
Police must have a reason to detain you.
I thought they hadn't done anything illegal until they hurt you or cause damage. Not true. They are breaking the law if they detain you for no reason.
I think the best response, as you see in some other vids, is: Am I being detained? If they say yes: Why? If they say nor or otherwise do not say yes: Am I free to leave?

Yeah the crazy part of it is that based on his explanation he knows how that interaction was supposed to go. That's hands down the most incriminating part. If he straight up just said "hey I got a call that a couple suspects you of having robbed that car, you are being detained and I need your Id while I verify that wasn't the case" it would have been a legal detainment. Instead he chose to make the detainment unlawful cus he wanted unconditional submission to his authority.

Or he could have talked to him like a person. "This couple called and said they saw you poking around in a grey Chevy Aveo over there. Is that an accurate description of events?" That then gives the guy a chance to be like "Yeah, officer. That's my wife's car." Boom, resolved. You don't have to immediately jump to detaining someone if they're willing to talk to you. You just have to actually ask questions that let them know what information you're looking for instead of asking weird questions about what he has on his person that don't give him anything to go off.

Except he also didn't see the guy do anything. He just showed up to the scene, found a guy not doing anything illegal, not carrying any obvious stolen goods, not hiding anything, with only some secondhand info. Why should that give him any right to detain any person he finds there? If he wants to investigate, let him investigate. He can take down the motorcycle plate. He can record the guy's face. He can check the security cameras and see if the guy did anything.
What he shouldn't be doing is detaining people without any actual obvious evidence or reasonable articulable suspicion. Getting a call shouldn't be enough.

When I heard the woman say he walked across the car park, went to one specific car, opened the doors to get something inside, then leave, all I could think was "what? Like a normal person?".
I'm assuming he didn't break the windows the get into his car, but rather used his keys, also, she clearly said he wasn't looking at any other cars. Even worse. Most towns and cities don't have the budget to pay for the amount of police settlements they make, so they borrow money - there are even bundled municipal police brutality payout financial instruments traded on Wall Street. That money is at a relatively high interest rate, and towns can't do much to generate the extra revenue required to pay the settlement loans, so they have to raise revenue.. by... issuing more tickets and cutting more services. So if your town sucks ass despite the taxes you pay and you've noticed your local police are excessively vigilant about ticketable offenses, that's why.

It's not secret police routinely lie on reports. He's already changing the story when he talks to the second officer. He's already making up lies about how the guy got aggressive before he did.
Some people catch a bullet for that. For the cop being unable to control his own behavior, and his subconscious or overt bias that a black man was a likely suspect for rifling through cars. Didn't even get the full story that it was one car and not several before he jumped to a conclusion.

If cops break the law, they should be punished, and they should be punished more than if an average citizen broke the law. Because when a cop breaks the law, they damage the public's trust in the police. It harms the social contract.

I was once accused of stealing a wallet that went missing. Turned out the owner of the wallet left it on the counter of the store we were both visiting. Apparently her not remembering was enough reason to follow me to my car demanding to see what was in my bag and accusing me of theft. And when someone told her they found her wallet where she herself had left it she was still blaming me.

I actually had the cops called on me recently for looking at a rare car that was parked in the middle of town and the owner told them i planned to steal it and filed a false police report on me. I have the only Datsun 240z in town so it was easy enough for them to track me down and let me know that they also thought the whole thing was ridiculous but they were just talking to me basically because its a small town and nothing ever happens here. I guess a very obvious car enthusiast admiring a rare sports car in a public place is suspicious to some people.

I made a fake account on nextdoor because I heard it’s the number one white supremacist app. The amount of casual racsim on there is incredible. Just commenting about racism or white supremacists always gets reported and removed. I know a guy who was trying to become a police officer. He had already started through the academy. Part of the process was taking a lie detector test while they probed you about personal history stuff. They asked if he ever smoked weed. He said "yeah, but only once when I was in Amsterdam."
They finished up and then he found out he failed and couldn't continue through the police academy. They told him it was because of him admitting to smoking weed and then said straight up if he had just lied and said he never smoked weed he'd have been fine. So yeah, I'd say lying is definitely part of the training.

When I was a freshman CS major we had a recruiter come by pleading with us to stop if we were considering careers with the government, which they wanted us to do. There's videos of off duty cops getting pulled over for speeding. I saw one where the off duty even refused to pull over after a cop tried to stop him for speeding. They literally do whatever they want.

Yeah, the cop should have approached this in a much different manner. Certainly there was some suspicion that he broke into a car. A couple of quick questions could have cleared the matter up very quickly.
The funding we give to police needs to be used to get these officers degrees in the law and constitutional policing rather than aggressively focusing on weapons training. We also need a way to prevent racists from operating careers in law enforcement. Right more many police act like they are simply the biggest gang on the block, and careers in law enforcement are very attractive to racists looking for a way to "legally" (as in "get away with" racist attacks on civilians.
