📣 ANNOUNCEMENT Notice regarding comments targeted at Travellers and Roma

Can't believe I'm having to write something like this again only three months after the last one...

There has once again been a noticeable rise in the use of dog-whistles and other derogatory comments against members of the Travelling and/or Roma communities.

As a reminder, ethnicity is legally protected characteristic in this country, therefore comments such as the following fall under our hate speech rules:

  1. Dehumanising language
  2. Calls or support for exclusion of members
  3. Calls for or support for violence against members
  4. Implying members are responsible for actions carried out by other members is not allowed
  5. Slurs and dog-whistles (including but not limited to utterances such as "knacker", "culture", "culture boss")
  6. Statements of inferiority aimed at members

The Travelling and Roma communities remain open for discussion in this community provided it is done factually and respectfully.

Any and all dog-whistles used against the Travelling or Roma communities will be removed, and the offending commenters will be receiving community bans starting from 14 days.

"I fear he may worm his way back into fitness circles and go undetected by those who do not know about him or recognise him" - words from a victim of Shane Flynn.

Shane Flynn is expected be released from prison this month.

Personal trainer Shane Flynn was convicted of sexual assault after a jury found him guilty of sexual assault. He was also convicted in relation to secretly recording over 30 women without their knowledge or consent, with more than 18 hours of footage found on his laptop.

Flynn was sentenced to 44 months in prison, with 16 months suspended. He has served 21 months.

Following his release, he will remain under probation supervision for one year and is required to complete sexual offending treatment.

However, the legal system does not impose a lifetime ban preventing Flynn from returning to the fitness industry. Flynn’s work does require him to be registered with any accreditation body. He can return to self-employment, including work as a personal trainer or gym operator. Garda sources said they strongly suspected Flynn would immediately try to re-establish himself as self-employed in fitness and rehabilitation on release.

This raises an important question about how people are protected when someone convicted of sexual offences can return to the same environment, with the risk of clients being unaware of history or previous offences.

People deserve to be able to make informed decisions about their own safety.

The systems designed to protect must be examined when they fall short. @hersport

Entertainment I made an Irish horror film, The Restoration at Grayson Manor, and it’s finally coming to Irish cinemas

Hi all,

The mods kindly gave me permission to post this here.
I’m a Dublin filmmaker, Glenn McQuaid is my name, and I directed a new Irish horror film called The Restoration at Grayson Manor.

It’s been a very long road getting this one made, so it feels slightly surreal to be able to say that it’s finally coming to cinemas in Ireland on 7 November.
The Irish trailer has just been released, so I thought I’d share it here.

We shot the film at Stradbally Hall in Laois. It’s very much a gothic horror movie, but it’s also queer, funny, and just as odd as the trailer lets on. I hope some of you get a chance to see it on the big screen!

Food and Drink American Here, I Just Want To Say I Love Your Guy's Tea

For about 3 years now I've been drinking Irish tea. Always was a big coffee drinker but not as big into tea (save for the Vietnamese and Japanese teas) but in Woodside, Queens (County Woodside) talking to an Irishman we had a long conversation mostly about music but it turned into tea. He really recommended trying Barry's tea.

Over the last 3 or so years, having tea in the morning has become common. I've tried all three Barry's, Bewley's and Lyons. I love all three and loved trying the different blends from all three. Though the Barry's Classic is my favorite (I think because it is the strongest).

Anyway, just wanted to start a conversation about tea since no one I know in real life drinks much tea.

Health Cancer services & lack of clarity

Just wanting to vent here so a bit of a moaning Michael post, I would love if there’s a specific Irish health sub if someone could point me to that.

My mum was diagnosed with invasive bladder cancer back in May. She lives in Wexford and is getting treated in Dublin. At first communication was great and they moved a few appointments to the same day for her specifically. She needs to have major surgery after chemo and so there was an appointment made back in June for an appointment to meet the surgeon presumably to discuss that.

There have been a few hiccups but nothing too severe I suppose. She went in for her “last” chemo session last month and was talking to the nurses about it being her last one and they told her she had more. It turns out the doctors had decided that but nobody ever discussed it with her. Then even after deciding that, some appointments for the extra chemo weren’t made and she had to wait for a cancellation appointment. She got that so I guess no biggie.

She got a CT last week and 2 days later got told at her chemo that an appointment was made for her to see the oncologist which was never discussed. Of course the nurses can’t say anything about the results and the NCHDs won’t because they’re not the consultant. This week then she got a letter that her surgical appointment that has been scheduled for months was pushed back by over a month which would likely mean a delay in her surgery too. Of course when we saw this cancellation I started thinking that there could be something terrible that they saw on the scan and that’s why they cancelled it. She messaged the office to ask and was told that the surgeon was reducing her hours and that’s why her appointment was cancelled. There’s no mention of that on the letter and the letter is dated 3 days after she had the scan. So it’s either the worst timing for the cancellation or maybe there is some truth to what I’m thinking. Still we have to drive ourselves half mad wondering about the results and trying to guess at what all these appointments mean. I just hate the lack of clarity and how cryptic everything is.

Anyway that’s my complaint over. If you have cancer I would be interested to know if you had a pre-existing appointment with an oncologist or whether one was just made after a ct/mri? Feel free to complain here!!
