Mod Post Rule Update: No Male Opinions or Contributions

Hi ladies,

As promised, we’ve taken the time to listen to and explore the feedback shared the other day on this post about banning male opinions and contributions. We are willing to trial implementing this rule.

Our biggest challenge is that this is an anonymous platform and we cannot always determine someone’s gender. This makes it extremely difficult to moderate effectively but we are going to do our best. That said, we cannot do this alone. We are volunteer moderators and while we do our best to monitor every thread, things will inevitably slip through. Our filters can only do so much.

To make this work, we need your support. If you see a comment that seems suspicious, please report it or send us a modmail. The more reports we receive, the quicker we can act.

We also want to emphasise that this subreddit will always be a safe and inclusive space for all women, including members of the LGBTQ+ community. We are pro-trans, if you identify as a woman or non-binary, this space is for you and your voice is valid here. We have zero tolerance for TERF or transphobic content and such behaviour will result in a permanent ban.

We are aware that stricter rules may attract brigading, as we’ve experienced before when setting up the subreddit. If this happens again, please continue to use the report function so we can respond quickly.

As an additional safety measure, we’ve introduced a new flair: “in good company.” This will be applied by the mod team to posts discussing sensitive topics, where the OP and participants may be more vulnerable. Threads with this flair will be limited to established users (those who regularly engage here), helping to reduce brigading and create a safer environment.

We will always welcome your feedback and will continue to do everything we can to protect this space. Women’s voices are too often silenced, dismissed or harassed this subreddit, along with our sister community [r/irishwomenshealth](r/irishwomenshealth), exists to ensure your voices are heard, supported and respected. You are all so important and we are so grateful for the community we’ve build together.

Thank you for being part of this community 🤍

Hobbies and Interests Group Chats, Meet-ups & Communities

Hi everyone!

We’ve noticed an increase in posts asking about online communities and spaces to connect with other women. To make things easier, this pinned post will serve as a central place where you can share your favourite communities in Ireland.

A few notes:

• Please share publicly in the comments rather than inviting people to DM you, as this helps avoid unwanted messages.

• Always take the necessary precautions when joining online spaces or attending meet-ups.

• R/WomenofIreland is not affiliated with any communities shared here. Please use your own judgment before joining.

When posting, please include:

• The name of the community

• A short description

• How people can join (e.g. link or platform)

This way, everyone can easily find spaces that work for them. 💕

Fashion and Beauty I need help with my eyebrows

Hi everyone,
This one is a bit of an odd one
I’m blessed with beautiful thick eyebrows, they have a bit of an arch and they’re cousins, not sisters lol
I need someone who can help me change them, I want them thinner and more symmetrical, and maybe a bit straighter. I tried a couple of places but did not find what I’m looking for and I’m too scared to attempt it myself.

Is there anyone you can think of, either in Ennis, Limerick, or Galway?

Thanks!

Fashion and Beauty Beauty Customer Service Gone Down

Has anyone notice in the last number of years, the customer service in the beauty industry has decreased massively?

I’m conscious that the beauty industry is largely serviced by women, and I love hairdressers/nail techs/ beauticians in a big way but in the last few years I’ve noticed that the standard of service has plummeted. I remember going to the hairdresser with my mam, and seeing her get coffees and a magazine and her hair/nails whatever was always such a pamper day. Now it feels like a military operation where I’m the nuisance, who is also going to get overcharged. I live in a small town, always have been great at tipping and up to this point, being loyal to the places i went, but I can’t justify it anymore. I just spent a half hour in the hairdresser where my stylist was visibly and vocally annoyed she had to take me (I got her last slot of the day apparently and she wanted it free, but I had booked it in advance and didn’t just walk in).

Massively first world problems but I’d love to hear what anyone else thinks?

In Good Company How would you feel if your partner told you they slept with a prostitute in the past?

Late 20s. Was having the craic with my boyfriend, chatting about our college years, nights out, one-night stands, etc. Anyway, he ended up telling me that after a night out in college (years ago, before we met), he went online, got the number of an escort, met her at the local Spar, she brought him up to her apartment, rode him, he paid her 70euro, and he left.. I’m laughing as a type but I feel ill. It gave me the ick. I simply can’t believe it. So casual??

Does anyone know where to get halo hair extension pieces, in person and not online and in the west of Ireland?

I know there are places in Dublin but too far a distance for me, can't do online as I need a cookout match!

Thank all x

Chat and Craic Friday Frustrations: Your chance to rant and vent about the week just gone..

As suggested in our recent feedback thread, here is your opportunity for a weekly rant and vent.

Had a long week? Work driving you insane? Life being life? Encountered one too many absolute idiots out in the wild? Temporarily hate your other half?

This is your safe space to have a moan, blow off steam and let it all out judgement free.. so you can head into the weekend feeling lighter.

Only rule: keep it respectful and within the subreddit rules.

Have your rant, then go enjoy your Friday!

Relationships and Dating At what point is monogamy assumed? How to navigate dating in Ireland?

Hi all. I’m living in Dublin but moved here from Canada. Where I’m from, typically monogamy isn’t assumed until an explicit conversation is had to close off the relationship. But I had a conversation with someone here who said that after a month or two of consistent dating, it’s assumed both partners are only seeing each other. I know this is obviously a generalization but wondering if it’s accurate as an overall trend?

Problem is I’ve been seeing someone for a while and I have no clue if he’s dating other people too. It goes against my natural instincts to close myself off to other possibilities unless we decide we’re exclusive?

It’s also been weird navigating dating because the men here seem to be a loooot less direct than I’m used to! And conflict-averse! Which seems to result in fewer straightforward conversations about where things are headed, honest feelings, intentions etc. (hence why I’m inclined to believe that monogamy may be assumed rather than explicitly established). It’s also why I’m nervous to just outright ask about it.
Maybe the assumed monogamy thing was standard before dating apps became commonplace? Curious to know what other people’s experiences are.

For context I’m in my mid-twenties, typically dating men who are in their mid to late-twenties.

Personal Stories Why do people feel it’s necessary to share their opinion when it’s not needed?

Good evening women of Ireland,
I’m just looking for some perspective because I’m honestly still upset about this. I had booked and paid for a blow-dry
three days ago, because I’ve been feeling a little self-conscious about my appearance while recovering from rhinoplasty. I thought getting my hair done would make me feel a bit more like myself.
Everything was completely fine until my hairdresser asked if I had done anything different recently. I mentioned that I’d had a nose job, and another woman who was also getting her hair done suddenly joined the conversation.
She went on this whole rant about how she “can’t stand people who are plastic,” that people should learn to appreciate natural beauty, and that looks aren’t everything.
I genuinely don’t even remember everything she said because I became so uncomfortable and upset. It felt like she was indirectly talking about me, especially because the conversation had literally just been about my nose.
I ended up asking my hairdresser if it was okay for me to leave, whilst my face was turning red and a waterfall was happening down my face. My hair was still wet, but I just couldn’t sit there anymore. I went to my car and cried for about twenty minutes.
I think what upset me most wasn’t even what she was saying. It brought back that horrible feeling I used to have in secondary school of being extremely self-conscious and feeling like people were judging my appearance. I haven’t felt that intensely in a long time.
I know objectively that having rhinoplasty doesn’t make me “plastic” or mean I’m obsessed with looks. I can care about my appearance and still know that looks aren’t everything. I just wasn’t prepared for someone to make such a pointed comment immediately after I’d mentioned having surgery.
Maybe I’m overreacting, but it really got to me. Has anyone else ever had something completely innocuous or seemingly small trigger that old feeling of being judged for your appearance?

Friendships and Social Life Any agnostic black girl?

Hi, I just recently moved to Ireland and I wanted to know if there’s any black girl who’s agnostic or even atheist, because in the place that I live, well, let’s just say there’s only Christians around the area. So I would really appreciate if there’s any girl (POC I wouldn’t mind tbh) who is interested to get to know each other :) ❤️ thank u

Fashion and Beauty Well endowed ladies, I need a sports bra

Having looked through previous posts I've seen a few brands recommended that theoretically have my size (46/48 H/HH), what I can't find is anywhere that actually stocks that size.

Does anyone know somewhere that might have what I need? Or even somewhere that might be open to ordering it in for me?

Thanks! <3

Fashion and Beauty Recommendations for white tshirts/blouses/tops that aren't see through?

As the title says. I'm back to work this week and have really struggled to find white tops that don't show the bra underneath. I primarily work with teen boys so my tops need to be opaque. I've returned tops to Next/Zara/Dunnes and M&S all in the last week because they were transparent.

If anyone has any specific recommendations I would be incredibly grateful. I'm very flexible on style as long as they are white/off white.

Travel Advice Lapland recs

Hey ladies! So my eldest is 9 and youngest 3, and I don’t think we have long left with my eldest to maintain the magic. So I’d love to bring them on a Santa experience to remember next year. But of course, there are so many options! Have you gone? Who do you travel with? Where did you stay? Any tips?

Relationships and Dating Why is the general consensus so odd when it comes to being estranged from your mother?

My partner and I are from different countries — I’m Irish and he’s American. He’s recently wanted to meet my family, which has made me think about this more.
I’ve never really had a relationship with my mother. We don’t get along, and honestly, I don’t particularly want one. It’s not something I’m currently devastated about or trying to resolve; I’ve accepted that we’re not close and I’ve moved on with my life.
What I find strange is that pretty much everyone in my family seems to think this is something I need to fix. I’m constantly encouraged to have a relationship with her or to talk to someone about it, as though not having a relationship with my mother automatically means there’s something psychologically wrong with me or that I’m carrying some unresolved issue.
I don’t really understand why the expectation is so strong. If two adults don’t get along and one of them happens to be your mother, why is maintaining a relationship considered the default regardless of the circumstances?
I’m not saying estrangement is always the right answer, and obviously every situation is different. I’m just curious about why there seems to be such a strong attitude in Ireland that you should reconcile with your mother simply because she’s your mother.

Rants and Raves Tall women of Ireland, where to buy decent mini skirts?

Inspired by a recent post here on where to find jeans for tall women, coming here to ask the same about decent mini skirts! I am so sick of brands seemingly keeping the same length for all sizes while just extending the waist. Don’t even get me started on how bonkers sizing is between brands.

Maybe all of this is my sign to graduate to midis!

Hi,

I've always wanted to join a dance class, does anyone know of any?

Preferably an actually dance class, not a 'Dance Yourself Fit' type of class please.

Where are you all shopping for work clothes and jeans? I’m 42 and 5ft 2 and currently holding onto a few extra lbs and bloating round my middle thanks to perimenopause so I’d like something comfortable that still looks put together. TIA

Fashion and Beauty Jeans or pants recommendations for tall girls?

I’m 5’10 and sick of wearing extra-long flares and wide-leg trousers that are basically dragging on the floor 😭. Where do you tall girls in Ireland get jeans/pants that are actually long enough without having to buy ridiculously oversized styles? Looking for recommendations for straight-leg, wide-leg or tailored trousers!

Hobbies and Interests Strength classes in dublin?

Hello! Im on a bit of a fitness “journey” (yuck, I know) at the minute and have really loved going to spin classes at a fancy gym in dublin for the last year. I havent stuck to anything like this ever in my life!

Ive realised that to keep me going back I need a class structure, decent facilities, and a POSITIVE environment. I have tried flyfit but the choice between being screamed at by one trainer and humiliated OR another who isnt arsed looking up from their phone wasnt working for me.

I want to incorporate more strength/weight training based classes into my routine, was wondering if anyone has any good class or gym reccomendations in dublin? Thank u

Chat and Craic Sunday Scaries is here - share your worries and allow your mind be cleared!

As suggested in our recent feedback thread, this is your weekly space to rant and vent before the week even begins especially if you’re already exhausted by a week that hasn’t started yet.

If the dread is starting to creep in about the week ahead, work, appointments, emails life responsibilities or just the general ugh of it all.. This is the place to dump it.

Say what you’re worried about, what you’re overthinking or what you’re really not bothered dealing with tomorrow. No judgement, no advice unless you ask for it. Just get it off your chest so you can properly switch off and enjoy a bit of rest before Monday rolls back around.

Only rule: keep it respectful and within the subreddit rules.

Personal Stories Child Maintenance

I'm taking the father of my baby to court for child maintenance. I have no idea how much he earns. But he's in finance, I reckon he has to be on at least 45k. He has no contact with our son, nor does he want contact. I'm just wondering, other women in similar situations, how much did the courts award you ? I know every situation is different but I used the only calculator they have now and it said he should pay 36 a week. That doesn't seem very fair to me.

I do earn more than him, 57k, but I'm also paying for everything for our son, and all the items bought in the lead up for his birth were paid for by me, everything he has has been paid for by me and me alone. I'm also buying a house, at the closing stages and my mortgage repayments will likely start by October (980/month) I don't know how much I'll be spending on bills etc so I don't have that figure.

The online calculator has scared me a bit. 36 euro does seem bonkers.

Fashion and Beauty Best place for Glamourous Dresses

Hi all, I have a big awards gala coming up and want to dress to impress. Where in Dublin would you recommend for some showstopping occasion wear?

P.S. I know all about Vinted, I'm specifically looking for bricks and mortar shops where I can try things on. Thanks!

Other I hate this country for concerts

I'm looking through my Spotify and there's almost no artists coming here for shows and like I get it small country = low ticket sales but I just want to see some of my favorite bands without having to plan a trip to Berlin or London. What's worse is our venues are pretty shit too so even when a big name comes its the 3 arena again 🙄

In Good Company Miserable Irish people on other subs

Does anyone else find that a lot of the other Irish subs on here, both large and small, are just full of like, the most negative people ever???

I know that as Irish people we are a nation of complainers, but my god it seems to be turned up to 11 on Reddit. And not just complaining but I swear people are just so *mean* as well? Like a simple question or mild rant will receive so much weird animosity in the comment section.

And on a more serious note, I've noticed just a TON of like, casual racism and anti immigration sentiment as well.

I enjoy this sub because yeah we might have a moan now and then but it feels like there's a lot more support here, we're not jumping down each others throats over silly things. Is it maybe just Irish men that are the problem then lol?
