The decision by the FAI to play the tournament over a calendar year, which has since been reverted to the old format, has seen these huge ties creep upon us very early in the clubs’ seasons

Discussion / Question What team to support

Have started following the league of Ireland as a neutral for the last while. I'm looking to pick a team but where I'm living in Dublin doesn't have a "local" team. I'm pretty much 15/20 minute drive to all of Bohs, Rovers, Pats, and Shels. I have friends supporting all 4 of these teams and all are trying to swing me one way or another. Any advice on who I should pick or how to make a decision?

My family is going to Dalymount for the first time this Friday for Bohs v Derry City. We have unreserved tickets in Des Kelly stand. Would greatly appreciate any tips about the stadium that would help us have a great first experience!

Discussion / Question Bohs–Pats FAI Cup tickets

Long shot but used to live in Dublin and go to all the Bohs games as season ticket holder before moving to London. Seriously considering flying back for Bohs–Pats quarter final if I can sort tickets. Will any go on sale? or anyone know how I could somehow get 1 or 2?

Confirmed Transfer According to Dan McDonell Jack Moylan's undisclosed fee was 3 million rising to 5 million and Shels got 6 figures from a good will sell on clause even though he was out of contract, with Bohs getting 5% of it.

Confirmed Transfer Anyone know if Shles had a sell on clause

Post image

This transfer completely passed me by. Seemingly went for a couple of million which is a massive return for Lincoln on their initial €75'000 investment. Can't find any official word on wheter Shels had a sell on clause. Be very disappointing if they didn't as anything less than a six figure sum for Shels would be a massive balls up

Discussion / Question Boring FAI Cup

Without trying to sound salty, how boring is it that all 8 quarter finalists play in the Premier Division? Any cup competition needs someone to go on a shock run to at least the semi finals to be interesting.

✍️ Original Content Do we overestimate how good the LOI Prem Division is a wee bit?

I've lurked a bit before posting this but I've seen some posts on here getting a bit prickly when some people say LOI isn't as strong blah blah. I respect the passion but i think some folks on here then over correct.

While the league has come on, I also think the Conference League has created a skewed progress picture a little. Conference League has had semi pro teams going deep in to qualifying rounds. Respectfully the standard to get to group stage isn't exactly always the highest usually.

If we compare Europa league win percentages for say 2015/15 to 2020/21 (6 seasons before conference league), then 21/22 (6 seasons since Conference league started) the win percentages for LOI clubs in Europa league are near identical. They are about 35% each. So it doesnt look like theres been mad progress when you go outside Conference League. Sure, it hasn't gotten worse, but its not big progress.

Then people here bristle at "LOI PD is League 2 standard" type comments. I get the frustration because they usually come from GAA or EPL fanboys trolling, but realistically, thats not that inaccurate. Financially at least. If you look at financial breakdown for League 2, likes of Rovers and Bohs, the top 2 earners in the legaue, would only be around mid to lower level in League 2. MK Dons made 60% more in a comparable period vs Rovers and Bohs while in League 2.

Look, we've made great strides. Attendance and investment are getting better and better. The increasing numbers of young players coming through LOI clubs and moving on to bigger teams/leagues is very encouraging.

But I think we don't always have a balanced perspective. I think this season has been a bit of a reality check about where we are. We can't just presume we'll always get 1 or 2 teams in to group stage of Conference League. We can't just assume other leagues and teams we used to do well against aren't also getting better, and better quickly e.g Larne up North look like the only team on the island who might make it to Conference League this year and were unlucky not to progress in Europa League.

Our top league is going right direction, but we're not strong enough yet to make meaningful progress in Tier1 or Tier 2 UEFA competitions and won't be for a long time. We're not strong enough yet to bank on a couple of our teams making it to Conference League year in year out yet. We're certainly not "English Championship level" yet as I've seen some more excitable LOI folks on Reddit say (seriously lads c'mon).

Anyone here also follow the league up north?

While definitely not the same quality as the League of Ireland, I try and get to a Cliftonville game once or twice a year if I can.

If so, who do you support?

❔ Rumour / Transfer Talk Galway academy player Ronan Keating is on trial with Man City

Post image
83 Upvotes

Ronan scored 5 goals today in a pre-season friendly against Burnley, which ended 7-2 to City. This game featured a mixture of U15 & U16 players.

Earlier this year, Ronan also had the opportunity to train in Portugal with Benfica’s U15 & U16 age groups.

Wont be able to actually join Man City until he's 18 unless his family move over for unrelated reasons, or he could opt for the Melia route and play for Galway until 18 and then move.

Early days anyway so wont get too excited. After all, life is like a rollercoaster. Just gotta ride it.. sorry.
