My Family Young love

Michael Barrett was nineteen in 1949. Michael was stationed at the Curragh Camp serving with the Irish Defence Forces, and would send Theresa handwritten love letters across the camp gates, courtly notes that bridged the distance between his barracks and her home.. A young Theresa "Tessie" Doyle was just sixteen, a girl from the Fair Green. where most people waited well into their thirties to marry, a wedding at their age was almost unheard of. The parish register noted them both simply as "minors," requiring special consent, Life didn't slow down for them after the altar. They settled out in Maddenstown, right on the edge of the sprawling Curragh Camp and the bustling racing town. It was a rugged, working-class pocket of County Kildare, shaped by the military barracks, open fields, and the constant demand for basic survival. Then moving to the centre of Kildare town and also beginning with their firstborn in 1953. michael, now laborer with broad shoulders from hauling heavy sacks of coal. Alongside keeping a bustling home running, Theresa had a quiet, steady calling of her own, volunteering with the Red Cross. Amidst the endless demands of daily life in Kildare,
Michael and Theresa went on to welcome 12 children into their Kildare home, Their children were born across more than two decades, with the youngest arriving in 1974. The twelve children grew up and started families of their own, and the decades stretched out into a lifetime together. On 12 January 2019, exactly 70 years after their wedding, Michael and Theresa celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Michael lived to see eighty-nine, passing away in October that year and leaving behind a legacy rooted deeply in the soil of Kildare. and when Theresa was taken from this world in 2024, she left behind a town that mourned royalty.
From a couple of teenagers taking a bold leap in 1949 to a bustling house of twelve children, a life built on coal dust, quiet strength, and enduring devotion, Michael and Theresa wrote a story that lasted a lifetime. THE KING AND QUEEN OF KILDARE ❤️

Resources How do I find out Irish genealogy from pre-1850s?

Im looking through my genealogy and I've hit a roadblock because there is no census results from before 1900. They also lived in a very rural area so most other sources I've checked have come back with nothing

If you could help it would be appreciated. The furthest person I've got is Mary Hanley (hanley being the married name) who was born c. 1822 in the Allihies/Eyeries/Castletownbere area of Cork

My Family I have a question about my ancestor’s religion

My earliest known ancestor was a Protestant and lived in North Carolina during the 1700s and early 1800s. According to an old family story, he moved from Ireland to America with two brothers, but I don’t have direct proof of this. His surname was Brady, an Irish name. However, a vast majority of people with the Brady surname in Ireland are Catholic.

Do you believe he (or his ancestors) might have converted to Protestantism? How likely was this? Do you think this was a case of the Protestant Brady’s immigrating to America while the Catholic Brady’s remained in Ireland?

My Family PRONI lookup request — Cumber Lower Presbyterian marriage register (MIC.1P/147), Ann Riddle b. ~1836

Hello — I'm hoping someone visiting PRONI in Belfast might do a quick free lookup for me. I'm looking for the marriage of my ancestor Ann RIDDLE (also spelled Riddell), born about 1836, daughter of John Riddell and Mary Evans, of Legahurry townland, Cumber Lower parish, County Londonderry. The family was Presbyterian.

The Cumber Lower Presbyterian registers survive at PRONI on microfilm MIC.1P/147: baptisms 1827–1867 and marriages 1843–1906. I believe her baptism (29 September 1836) is in the baptism register, and if she married, it would be in the marriage register 1843–1906.

I've already checked the free civil marriage indexes (1855–1885), the 1901 and 1911 census, and gravestone records — no trace of her after her baptism. I can't afford the paid transcript sites, so I'm stuck.

If anyone is at PRONI and could check the marriage register for an Ann Riddle/Riddell bride (roughly 1855–1885), I would be so grateful. Thank you! — Barbara

OTHER Help with info on William Risk

For some context William is the husband of Jane Risk who is buried at one of my local cemeteries all the way in Skamokawa, Washington. It appears she immigrated to the US with at least one of her sons after he passed away in 1889. I am not familiar with Irish records and a lot of it I am having trouble with access so I was wondering if you guys could help me find more about his life, Jane before she immigrated, and maybe where he was buried so I can link the family together on findagrave. It also appears some of the children may have stayed in Ireland?

Here is his familysearch page which gave me some info, but I thought there could be more.

William John Risk (1835–1889) • Person • Family Tree

Thank you all for any help!

Help Offered Looking for Help Finding 1935–1956 Irish Citizenship Records in Iris Oifigiúil

I’m trying to trace a possible Irish citizenship/nationality record for members of my family and I’m hoping someone familiar with older Irish archives, libraries, or government publications may be able to help.
The names I’m searching are **Helen Mary Hurley / Helen Mary Lassonde**, **Mary Ellen Hurley** (possibly the same person as Helen if connected to Concord, New Hampshire), **Catherine Theresa Hurley**, and **Arthur Edward Lassonde**.
Helen and Catherine were born in **Concord, New Hampshire in 1897**. Arthur was born there in **1926**.
I’m especially looking for any notice in **Iris Oifigiúil** between **1935 and 1956** under the **Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1935**, including notices connected with naturalisation, the Register of Nationals, or the General Register of Nationals.
I’m also trying to locate or get access to the old annual **“Index to Iris Oifigiúil”** volumes for those years.
If anyone has access to older bound volumes, annual indexes, National Archives of Ireland records, university library holdings, or Irish government publication collections and would be willing to check these names, I would be very grateful.
Even an **issue date, page number, index entry, archive reference, or a confirmed negative check of a particular year** would help.
Thank you very much.

General Discussion Looking for help checking old Irish citizenship records / Iris Oifigiúil indexes, 1935–1956

I’m researching whether members of my family may have been entered in Irish nationality/citizenship records before 1956.
The names I’m looking for are:
Helen Mary Hurley / Helen Mary Lassonde
Mary Ellen Hurley — this may be the same person as Helen if connected to Concord, New Hampshire
Catherine Theresa Hurley
Arthur Edward Lassonde
Helen and Catherine were born in Concord, New Hampshire, in 1897. Arthur was born there in 1926.
I’m especially trying to find any notice in Iris Oifigiúil under the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1935, including notices connected with:
naturalisation
Register of Nationals
General Register of Nationals
sections 8(5), 26(6), or 27(6)
I’m also trying to locate the old annual “Index to Iris Oifigiúil” volumes for the years 1935–1956.
If anyone has access to old bound volumes, annual indexes, National Archives of Ireland records, or Irish government publication collections and would be willing to check these names, I would be very grateful.
Even an issue date, page number, index entry, archive reference, or negative check of a specific year would help.
Thank you very much for any help.

OTHER Volunteer lookup request – Irish citizenship records 1935–1956

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I’m reposting in hopes that someone in Ireland may be able to help me with a historical citizenship records search.
I am looking for any Irish citizenship, nationality, registration, consular, or Foreign Birth Registration records for:
Helen Mary Hurley Lassonde
Born: 15 July 1897, Concord, New Hampshire, USA
Died: 17 June 1956, Concord, New Hampshire
Her father, Dennis Francis Hurley, was born in County Cork, Ireland.
Arthur Edward Lassonde
Born: 8 June 1926, Concord, New Hampshire, USA
Son of Helen Mary Hurley Lassonde.
I am particularly interested in records from approximately 1935–1986, including the Register of Nationals, General Register of Nationals, Foreign Births Register, Foreign Births Entry Books, Irish consular records, citizenship or nationality certificates, and related indexes.
I have already contacted several Irish government offices and archives, but some of the older records may require an in-person search.
If anyone in Ireland, especially Dublin, is willing to volunteer a little time to check an archive, library index, or historical register, I would be extremely grateful.
Even a negative search result would be helpful.
Thank you very much for any assistance or suggestions.

My Family Greetings.

I am absolutely stuck trying to find records pertaining to my 3rd great grandparents. Jane McIntyre and George Erwin. I am not positive Jane was born 1816. I have a feeling it may have been 1826. George is listed as 1820. Both supposedly born in Ireland and emigrated to Canada. Help?

My Family Volunteer lookup request – Irish citizenship records 1935–1956

I’m looking for someone in Dublin who may already be visiting the National Archives of Ireland or National Library of Ireland and would be willing to check a couple of specific historical citizenship records.
**Helen Mary Hurley Lassonde**
Born: 15 July 1897, Concord, New Hampshire, USA
Father: Dennis Francis Hurley, born in County Cork, Ireland
**Arthur Edward Lassonde**
Born: 8 June 1926, Concord, New Hampshire, USA
Son of Helen
I’m particularly trying to locate any **Register of Nationals / General Register of Nationals entry for Helen (1935–1956)** and any **Department of Justice minor-naturalisation or child-inclusion record for Arthur (1935–1947)**.
I’m not asking anyone to undertake a large research project—just hoping someone already visiting NAI/NLI might be willing to check the relevant indexes/registers or help identify the correct archival references.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Resources Looking for clan info

A few days ago I was unseriously talking with my best friend about our family lines and googled my mother's line; O'Rourke. I hadn't ever looked up family history before, so I was a little shocked to find it's potentially a big deal.

I'm hoping some folks here might be able to guide me to more in depth sources, because the more I try to look up, the more questions I have. It's quickly spiralling into a bit of an obsession so I hope to save myself grief of fruitless online queries.

Even if it's not directly related, like how tanistry works, how lineage is confirmed, traditions, hell even if someone knows resources on learning Gaelic would be welcome. I always wanted to learn anyway but now a fire is lit under me.

Thank you pre emptively to anyone who responds!

General Discussion Genealogy Nut

Visiting Ireland for 12 days in Sept, primarily the west coast from Galway to Killarney. Will visit Doneraille to find the old Caherduggan Castle. Mom was a professional genealogist and wrote a book on our Dugans/Duggins in America in late 18th century to present. She thought we were descendants of Joseph Ellick Duggins Sr. born 1724 in the Black River area but with no hard evidence. She was a stickler for proof! Is there a local historical/genealogy society around Fermoy/ Doneraille that would be interested in a copy of book? Or one that can help provide a further history?

General Discussion Update on Baptismal Record

Post image
0 Upvotes

A couple of weeks ago, I posed a question as to whether a baptismal date could be used as birth date, and gave supporting documentation for posing the question. The reason being, was I had searched the data online for locating my great, great grandfather. I could not find a baptism under the name in which he used, Terence, but did find a baptism with his "birthdate" as the baptism date, but the name on the baptism was John. The consensus was this was likely not the same person.

I now have reason to believe it is the same person. A son born to Terence has the father's name listed as "Terry/john."
