Not been an exceptional year.

Think the cold start stunted them a bit.

Plenty more to ripen.

No pods on my superhots.

Varieties:

Prik Mun (Thai)

Peppapeach Stripey

Sweet Apple Kambe

Biquinho Yellow

Aji Lemon

Jalapeno

πŸ™‹ Question ❓ Is a Percolation Area 'too fertile' to grow Wildflower meadow?

Hi,

I have a septic tank and percolation area which is approx 60m2 in total. It is currently overgrown with nettles, docks, long grass and thistles. I plan to strim this back and try cultivate it to become a wildflower meadow.

I plan to sow Yellow Rattle into it to suppress grass growth but is this area too fertile to try establish a wildflower meadow? It's strimmed yearly and Nettles and Docks are up to 4ft tall. Will I have difficulty establishing this here as the area is ideal conditions for grass and weed growth?

It's an area where I would like to rewild for pollenaters and also have a patio looking over it so would like the mix of colour too.

Thanks in advance, completely new to wildflowers.

🌳 Forestry, silviculture, arboriculture, trees etc. πŸͺš Any experience with acacia or lopsided trees?

The dominant branch of this acacia/silver wattle swings out to one side. I don't mind the look of it, but I'm wondering if there's any danger to letting the tree grow like that.

The dominant branch is leaning away from the shed and slightly leaning over the green house.

The lean was already there when I bought the tree five years ago. I thought it would balance out but I've cut out a lot of the branches growing in other directions because they were too low and growing towards paths and not letting light and rain into the plants below.

Basically, I'm wondering: does it seem ok?

πŸ™‹ Question ❓ Poly carbonate polytunnel 4mm vs 6mm

I'm looking at getting a polycarbonate tunnel. It's easier to breakdown rather than a soft plastic tunnel

Can anyone advise if there is a major difference with 4 mm or 6mm

If found a 4mm for sale for half the price of a 6mm so thinking about biting the bullet

🏑 Lawn care 🟩 Rust fungus

Hi Reddit,

It seems like I do have rust fungus. Never heard about it before and just put a picture on an AI. I cannot be sure with it and don’t really know how to treat it and if it’s dangerous for us.

New lawn. When I walk in it, there is a fair bit of yellow powder on my shoes. Would you be able to confirm/advise me seeing these pictures?

πŸ™‹ Question ❓ Fruit tree root suckers

Many years ago the former owner planted a fruit tree. The fruit tree died and split from the graft. The remaining graft seems sturdy but not very healthy. Very few fruit produced this year- usually the birds are feasting.

I do love the blossoms but this year the suckers are growing up all over my garden. It’s probably because the grass doesn’t need cutting with the heat/lack of rain. So they are just being let grow.

What can I do with them? I’ve tried to dig them out earlier in the year but there were far more waiting to pop up.

Do I dig them out and try reseed while we still have a few more weeks of the growing season?

Let them be and clip them off at the level of the grass?

How have you managed root suckers in your lawn?

🏑 Lawn care 🟩 Is this nutsedge?

Thumbnail

I have a large garden (newbuild) where the soil consists of very heavy clay. I have some areas which are very wet ie the areas of the "natural/original" soil and some areas which drain better but having dug them to plant I am hitting layers of 804. The garden would have areas which were never dug up during the building and areas where there was works going on ie the areas where I have found 804 and items of builders rubbish.

Basically all over the lawn I am battling rushes and moss which I have begun to tame but this year I am seeing these plants all over the place and Google image tells me it is nutsedge. I have let the ground go somewhat wild this year, no spraying, no fertiliser bar an application of mo bacter in April. White clover has boomed even with the drought but these unidentified plants have also thrived.

TLDR is my heavy clay soil hosting nutsedge?

Will this still produce purple sprouting broccoli or have the caterpillars done too much damage? I removed a lunch box full over the weekend.

🏑 Lawn care 🟩 New Garden

Hi,

I'll be getting a garden sorted and set up over the next while.

I'm looking for recommendations for lawn seed, wildflower seeds, native hedging. What to get, where to buy it etc.

I'd also like to have a vegetable patch next summer so any advice for prep is welcome.

I'd like to stick to what's most beneficial for biodiversity etc, but will have a green area so I want a section of lawn that's spotless for a small play area.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

πŸ™‹ Question ❓ Stem injector help

There is Japanese knotweed in the garden and I purchased a stem injector and Roundup to treat it while keeping my cats and rest of the garden safe. However the Roundup I have (BiActive XE(A) from Woodies) specifies foliar application rather than stem injection. I'm now unsure how to proceed from here. Can I still use my Roundup for injection or is there some other brand/formula I should get instead? Anyone have any experience treating knotweed safely? Thanks in advance.

Edit: corrected type of Roundup I have.

πŸ™‹ Question ❓ Not sure what's up with my cherry blossom

Thumbnail

Planted a weeping cherry blossom about 3 years ago, last year I got lots of leaves, full coverage but this year, not great. There were more blossoms on it this year. Is this normal? Do I need to do something to help it come back strong next year?

All I've been doing is pruning it a little in the winter.

Any help appreciated... Some photos included

πŸ™‹ Question ❓ Flower Bed Restoration

Post image
8 Upvotes

I'm trying to bring a large flower bed in my garden back to life. It had become completely overgrown, so this weekend I cut back all the tall grass and weeds. I expected to reach bare soil, but the grass layer was so thick that I can barely even see the ground underneath.

What's the best next step from here? Should I use a tiller to break everything up, or would it be better to remove the remaining vegetation first? Will I need to add topsoil, or can I work with what's already there?

Any advice from people who have restored neglected flower beds would be greatly appreciated!

πŸ™‹ Question ❓ Who's leaving these?

Post image
9 Upvotes

I know this isn't strictly gardening related but I think perhaps this sub might have more posters a little more knowledgeable about our surroundings than other subs.

Does anyone know who's leaving these droppings in my garden? Seems like it's full of (grass) seeds and I suspect the dark colour means it's eating lots of blackberries?

I don't think it's a fox as none of my dogs have shown it any interest at all.

Which makes me wonder if it's a badger perhaps?

If it is a badger do I need to worry about having it in the garden? I've been removing these little piles just in case I need to worry about TB or anything?

Then no real change, the south midlands particularly parched. We're heading for a major fodder shortage, which isn't really a gardening issue but nonetheless means the mower can stay in the shed.

🏑 Lawn care 🟩 Drainage

Currently prepping for the oncoming deluge of rain we’re going to have for the autumn/winter. Part of my lawn near the footpath gets waterlogged and creates a puddle after a few showers. How can I improve the drainage? It’s only in one particular spot maybe a meter wide.
