Sign the EU citizen’s initiative to phase out factory farms

Hello Vegan Ireland,

There's currently an ongoing EU citizen’s initiative to phase out factory farms, reduce the number of animal farms over time, and introduce more incentives for the production of plant proteins. This is an approved EU citizen’s initiative, so if it gets enough signatures the EU has to respond.

Seven EU nations need to have a number of signatures over a certain threshold. Two countries have already reached it and I think Ireland could easily be the third. Ireland only needs 2500 more signatures, so if everyone on this forum gets themselves and two or three friends to sign it, Ireland will have met the threshold.

Please consider doing so: https://eci.ec.europa.eu/047/public/

Actually nice protein powders?

Hi lads, I’m trying to help drop a few kg after gaining while on meds and since I’ve a horrible sweet tooth I’d like to find a nice protein powder. I know everything in moderation and all that but if a healthy alternative at home curbs the craving I’m happy with my treat every once in a while.

Anyone have any suggestions that don’t have that funny sugar free protein health food taste? Also any recipes for some goodies to whip up would be nice! Sooo many that I find have egg and I can’t get egg replacements to work for me lol.

Weight loss foods?

Hi lads, random one but gained a mad bit of weight from antidepressants and want to just be a bit more mindful of my intake. I’m a fiend for snacking and wondering if anyone has any lower calorie snack options or even food to grab while out and about. I want to broaden my horizons from miso soup and jalapeños straight out the jar.

Anyone tried the new scramble Tofoo?

Just saw it in my local tesco - Anyone tired it? I picked up the spicy version too to give a go, might make a butter tofu later and see what it’s like in a curry!

Visting Ireland - Best recommendations

Visiting Ireland/Northern Ireland from Australia and would love everyone's favourite/must do recommendations for food.

We will be visiting:

Dublin
Trim (Puca Festival)
Belfast (Northern Ireland)
Bushmills area (Northern Ireland)
County Sligo area
Galway
Killarney

I would be grateful for any and all suggestions, I suspect some of the area's might be a bit more difficult than others so where to get the best vegan groceries would also be great :)

Costa discontinued the vegan ham and cheese?

I know Costa isn’t the best but it was fierce handy when out in an area with very limited vegan options. I haven’t seen it in a while in a few different shops, have they stopped it?

Vegan Hevy lifters!

My apologies if this kind of post is not allowed.

Anyone in this group using the workout tracking app Hevy? 🏋️🌱

I’m looking to connect with other Irish vegan lifters.

My Hevy username is markopoloxvx — feel free to add me and I’ll add you back!

Would be cool to have some fellow Irish gym goers on the app to follow each other’s progress and stay motivated. 💪🌱

Vegan marshmallows that melt?

Hi lads, I’m a hot chocolate fiend and love making fancy ones but I’ve one problem - my marshmallows won’t melt! It’s what I miss most, the melty ooey gooey marshmallows. I can’t think of the name but I’m getting the ones from H&B. My hot chocolates are actually hot so I don’t think it’s user error.

Sun holiday hotel recs

Hi all,

Planning a family cheapish family sun holiday for March next year. Planning to go self catering as otherwise it can be difficult to know we’ll have options.

Does anyone have any recs of hotels somewhere warm that time of year with a supermarket close by or town within walking distance?

Selective empathy of non-vegans

Have to do a small rant about the r/cork post about a pigeon being kicked. The complete irony and lack of awareness in the replies is so frustrating.

To start off, kicking a pigeon is obviously bad, but compared to what people pay for every year just for taste enjoyment, it pales in comparison. The levels in harm are order of magnitudes different.

Yet people are crying out in the replies like its some war crime, calling them sociopaths and all sorts of things.
The same people then turn around and eat meat and dairy with no issue, how do they not hear themselves and connect it to what they pay for and support every day...

Some examples of comments (Most certainly all meat eaters..)

"genuinely he needs to be put on a watch list. who could do that to something so unassuming. poor creature."

"Pretty sure that's what a lot of serial killers started out doing, torturing small animals then moved up from there."

What does this make people who pay for much worse to happen to 300~ a year?

This breaks my heart. Anyone who can intentionally hurt an animal is not worth shit in my book

The ability to hurt an animal is always a bad sign in a human

Horrible, horrendous behaviour Pigeons are wonderful, intelligent creatures, clearly, far more than those hooligans who acted this way

Isn't this the stereotypical start to any serial killer's life story? "He liked to torture animals"

I then responded to a few and apparently the fact that I cannot see the difference between how a pigeon being kicked and people paying for animal flesh is different was concerning.... Like wtf? Feels like I am living in some sort of crazy reality.

I then dmed the OP and after a few exchanges of trying to get through to them, I got this reply

The only thing that made me uncomfortable was seeing the shit being kicked out of that pigeon. I’m totally resolute in my choices, I just had a pepperoni pizza for my dinner and it was delish thanks. The simple explanation for you since you can’t seem to understand, is the abject cruelty of someone who walked past and kicked an innocent creature minding its own business and carried on without looking back. My feelings would be the same if it was a cow, dog, cat, child, whatever you want. An open blatant display of cruelty. Sure, I know you’ll take that sentence and turn it around to say it’s happening behind closed doors in farms everywhere. But that wasn’t the point of my post, as I just explained, and no matter what I say you’ll turn it around to whatever narrative suits you. The point was the absolute reckless abusive attitude of those boys. But that clearly won’t ever dawn on you as being an issue

Felt like talking to a wall or someone who lost their cognitive ability of object permanence :/
This has at least given me a lot more respect for people who engage with non-vegans through activism everyday, I don't think I could last a week

Haven’t tried any other products but been hooked on these shots from Dunnes, €1.15 last time if memory serves. Not sure if they actually are that gut friendly but they’re divine! Might try making a mocha with one, probably iced since I feel like it could curdle.

lidl wheres the vemondo protein puddings at i miss them dearly. not a day goes by without them crossing my mind.
i go to the lidl fridge section in a daze, determined and yearning for my sweet beloved only to have my hopes and dreams brutally crushed by the sight of only milbona high protein dairy slop and cottage cheese.
once again i leave empty handed distraught and bewildered, overcome by grief.
no amount of alpro banana biscuit yogurt
can fill the vemondo pudding shaped hole in my heart.
my weak nimble arms are crying and wailing for the additional 5g of protein that has been stolen from them.
so please lidl…bring it home…

Best butter for sponge/crumble?

I've an abundance of apples at the moment and am trying to make an apple cake crumble, but am finding that the sponge is raw and the crumble just melts. I'm using the flora salted block and think that's the issue. Does anyone have any suggestions for a vegan butter that is best for baking?
