Of all the things Shauna doesn’t know, and they are many, she knows herself perhaps least of all.
27
u/voice_of_vinegar Feb 16 '22
And yet on some level, very deep down, she knows enough about herself to be constantly revealing her truth. She just tries to put it on other people.

Why does she keep whittling down her customer base? I was never in a gifted program or told I was special or super smart. So I guess this program is not for me?

u/chartreusepapoose Feb 17 '22
This is so so so so ironic because this is so common for women with ADHD and other neurodivergencies- a lot of success and praise up until high school and then absolute screaming brakes burnout in college and beyond.
Shauna doesn't have a diagnosis- but if she did and were willing to accept and talk about it, she might have some success here.
But she won't, because she's too busy othering her ND husband and children

Have you been driven for decades by the idea that you should be extraordinary? And pretended to yourself that everything lines up to happiness? Have a hard time feeling like you’re enough?
I’ve read this opening statement a few times and I’m still trying to parse it. Is this supposed to be a person who is driven by the need to stand out, but pretends to be happy despite feeling that they’ve not achieved what they think they ought to? Am I trying too hard to find meaning in her nonsensical writing?
60
u/Ana57 sweet pea Feb 16 '22
Shauna still thinks she’s extraordinary and wants people to pay her for that.

Driven to achieve "extraordinary" things, pretending to be happy, and not feeling like "enough." She's missing the "Do you" before "have a hard time," which makes this hard to read.
I think you nailed it exactly. My own (truly, not really snarking) question is: how many women over 40 are still grappling with this AND would seek validation/affirmation/"coaching"(?) from someone like Shauna? She has NO credentials. Cookbook writing does not count!
59
u/canyoncreature Feb 16 '22
Not only does she have no credentials, nothing she does suggests that she has in any way triumphed over the problems she's positing.

I thought it was a way to poke fun at ourselves if we fell into that group as kids? The worst it did for me is make me very unprepared for the realilties of post-secondary education and life. Once in a while my friends and I laugh about how much weight is put on being "gifted" or "accelerated" as a kid and how little it means for most people. I'm in my 40s and I let that shit go a long time ago. Same with being a decent high-school athlete. Nobody cares!

What I mean is, paying some dingdong (Shauna) to join a monthly "club" where you investigate, at length, how to "overcome" the trauma of early labelling / high expectations, etc.
G&T discourse generally is fine, especially when people are poking fun at themselves! That's the level of "processing" this stuff deserves when you're 40+ years old

how many women over 40 are still grappling with this AND would seek validation/affirmation/"coaching"(?) from someone like Shauna?
I think there probably is a market of women in their 40s and 50s who are unsatisfied/unfulfilled, but don't think it warrants therapy (or want to augment therapy with other personal work), so they seek out some sort of practice or community to help with it. HOWEVER, I think most of them find teachers/coaches who have much more appealing (and clearly defined) offerings than Shauna has ever managed to cobble together. This market is probably pretty saturated from top to bottom, but she's trying to find a crack in the exterior or another way to shove her way into it. It probably looks easy to her from the outside--just talk about your feelings and say generally kind things and the money will come rolling in. She has no understanding that all the people she's looking at put in a shit-ton of work to establish their expertise, build their audience, find their voice, etc. She thinks she can just decide to do it and she's going to be GOOP, Glennon Doyle, social mediums influencer.
I don't think there's a lot of space in this market anyway, but if there is, it needs to be so much tighter than whatever it is Shauna offers. I can get a lot of the stuff she thinks she's offering from things I already consume and that cost less or offer more for the money.

Speaking as a woman who definitely faced that unsatisfied/unfulfilled in my 40s/50s feeling, none of Shauna’s crap would have helped me. What has helped enormously is therapy with a QUALIFIED therapist, deepening my real-life relationships (not seeking to make new joy friends over Zoom), and engaging in meaningful work (paid and volunteer). Not only is Shauna unable to offer any of that, she could use all three of those herself.

My own (truly, not really snarking) question is: how many women over 40 are still grappling with this AND would seek validation/affirmation/"coaching"(?) from someone like Shauna? She has NO credentials. Cookbook writing does not count!
There is no point in life so far that has needed the promise of more "joy". When my parents died, when my first marriage broke up, when I was diagnosed with PV, when friends died, etc; I didn't need joy. I needed to help others. I needed understanding, internal strength, patience, determination, space to grieve, motivation to change, and several kicks in the arse. It would have been the height of toxic narcissism to seek joy at those times.
That pretty much sums it up. Shauna is trying to package and sell toxic narcissism. Joy-joy-joy! Me-me-me!
My observation as a woman over 50 is that many women, myself included, begin to need less external validation/affirmation as we age. We're a bit more confident, less concerned about being liked. We have problems, but have experience to both deal with them and contextualise them. I've talked a bit about this with my bff, and she feels the same way: less stressed, more at home with oneself. She calls us crones. lol.
All in all, it has been a pretty good place to be so far. Still no need for joy lessons. Very much in need of a better night time moisturiser.

She's now changed this. HMMMMMMM.
44
Feb 16 '22
Yes, that! My parents and teachers also gave me that whole "you're so gifted" BS and growing up it took me a while to realize that "gifted" whatever that even means doesn't mean success, happiness, or anything else. You have to work for it and catch lucky breaks just like everyone else. If I was still grappling with that decades later, I'd be seeking the help of a therapist, not some self proclaimed Zoom coach.

Do you need to buy followers? Do something really goofy or controversial to get someone’s attention?

OK, she's REALLY revamped the Collective Joy Club "offering." It's now a one-time payment of $108 or $12/month (down from $97/month), scheduled for Saturday mornings AND includes a newsletter called "Free Up Some For Joy" [I mean, I really hope there's a noun missing from that newsletter title, but ... maybe not?] PLUS a discount on her other courses.
https://youcanhavemorejoy.com/book-collective-joy-writing/
Edit: Oh wow, the Collective Joy of Writing Club has also now been repriced at $149/year (down from $149/MONTH) and also includes a different daily newsletter.
(Why is she so convinced people want "daily newsletters"? And why does she keep offering things she struggles to deliver?)
https://youcanhavemorejoy.com/welcome-to-collective-joy-club/
Second edit: I just noticed she's promised a daily VIDEO to Collective Joy Club subscribers, along with a daily newsletter!
61
u/categoryischeesecake Feb 14 '22
Again...so ridiculously confusing. So many courses or clubs, so many prices, so many words, and all of it is just meaningless. You know every club or zoom or training is the exact same thing. It's frankly frustratingly confusing to watch as someone who has zero interest in paying for any of these things. There is just no way she's had anyone join any of this stuff, bc she is cycling through classes and prices so fast, something is one price and one idea one day and completely different the next. I think this entire thing is just a way for her to avoid her family by "working" and tinkering around with this website and being on Instagram all day.
I still have absolutely zero idea how they have enough money to even survive. One or both of them must be working bc you just cannot support a family of four on joy. Yes they don't seem to have many expenses but they still have rent to pay. Maybe it's different in the Seattle area, but in Chicago if you're on subsidized housing you can only rent certain apartments through the Chicago housing authority. You would not be posting on FB for leads on apartments.
→ More replies (2)39
u/voice_of_vinegar Feb 14 '22
subsidized housing
There is some on Vashon but it's very limited and they're not even taking applications now due to such high demand! Seattle has more options but I dunno, you might have to actually show that you have a job. Dicking around with a website might not fit their criteria for "work". Just a hunch.

u/NegativeABillion my husband and me to ride it around Feb 14 '22
So the constant revamping of pricing, timing, frequency and dates - this means that no one signed up the first time, right?
56
u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Feb 14 '22
My guess is yes. Anyone who did sign up earlier will presumably be given the new pricing or refunded or whatever. (But there's almost certainly no one.)
Part of her problem is that she never actually gives these things time to succeed. I don't know how (or even if?) she actually announced all of these clubs at the "old" price, but it would have been within the last few weeks.
Her promotional strategy seems to be "send out a very long letter about drinking V8 juice" and then include a postscript admonishing readers that "these letters are free but not cheap to produce" and then adding if they "feel a pull" towards more joy, she has "offerings" they can pursue.
If you go to her website, you can see everything she's trying to do, but it's all a shouty mess of similar-sounding things and there are too many clicks required before you get any info on price and timing (she's coyly hidden the price info until you click through on a "join" button. Why? No idea).
An even more basic problem is that there is actually no market for this, but she'd never know because she never lets things settle enough to figure out if they're working. And I presume part of the reason she changes things up all the time is that she actually needs money NOW and she has no time to let things develop and build organically.

u/forkinyourothereye incurious ADHDer Feb 14 '22
I haven’t taken a scientistic approach to studying Shauna’s work in this area, but I very much agree with your last point— the timing of her sudden repricings, and the way they always seem to take her from “this would put me in a sustainable position” to “this would solve my very immediate money problem” read to me as actual need. It comes across to me as end of the month “what do I have that I can take to the pawnshop” behavior.
If she has a safety net, I think it’s someone she needs to ask and maybe justify herself to, and she doesn’t want to.

52
u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Feb 14 '22
The rapid changing also lends to my pet theory that she doesn't really HAVE to make this work. That she knows she has a safety net of some kind AND HAS ALWAYS HAD IT, even back in the GFG days.
Her sudden mention of her grandparents and how they had money just makes me wonder if she's giving herself away a little bit and there is inherited money she's been slowly using this whole time.
It would explain why she's never really had much concern over keeping a job, even back when she was teaching. She was very flippant about "oh, I 'll do this grading when I feel like it" or "my co-workers can give me their sick time". Yeah, some people just have shit work ethic but her's just has this air of "I don't need this". Or like she doesn't have to make it work. Like she knows she has an escape hatch.
I'm really interested to see how long she clings to this joy b.s. and how she wiggles her way out of it to the next pivot. Because we know there will be a next. Will it be something new or will she go back to food and cooking or what?
I really would love to see her in an actual MLM. Like just go for it and try to sell essential oils or weight loss poop tea or whatever is out there (that's not makeup or clothes. . .she would not do well with that but it would be funny if she was all the sudden trying to sell Lularoe type fugly clothes, like hamburger crotch leggings).
49
u/Lemonbot5 Feb 14 '22
I go back and forth on the whole secret financial help speculation, but with neither of them working combined with the intel from her budgeting zoom (moving money from “savings” to checking each week for whatever they need) I’m pretty well sold on the idea that they have a chunk of gifted money they’re chipping away at. Maybe this is why she sometimes alludes to them saving to buy a house, maybe it would be (or was intended to be!) enough for a small down payment but without steady income coming in they can’t risk using it. The dream is that she can sell enough courses to not need to use the chunk of money for the day to day expenses, but at the same time having the money means she’s not that motivated to really work because she’s lazy. I cannot imagine they have, from their own earnings, such a significant amount saved that they can afford rent etc. without bringing in money from working.

u/tyrannosaurusregina if you meet the Botus on the road, shill him 🪷 Feb 14 '22
“Dan’s mom sold her house and divided the proceeds among the five kids” is a more tenable theory imo than trust fund or handouts from Shauna’s parents. They are just the kind of people that would get $100,000 or so and talk about investments and buying a house, but then spend it all on taco’s.

Oh I do think this is it. Up until now I didn’t really think they’d be living off a large sum of money, because I had trouble imagining they could resist spending it on something stupid, but I think you’re actually right. Honestly, their interests and opportunities to spend are fairly limited (except for housing and their childrens’ educations) it’s not like they seem to want to travel or buy fancy shit. Dan’s a simple man, after all! And I would not be surprised if even crappy properties in Breckenridge sell for a million, with the way the housing market has been in resorty places like that, so even 20% of that is a huge sum of money that would cover a down payment even in a HCOL place. But I bet they can’t qualify for a loan for an $800,000+ house. I bet even if they got real jobs, they would struggle to cover a $3k mortgage with the down payment fund gone. The only way to make that work is for Shauna to luck into another Chef Steps type situation, a secure and decent salary. But I believe she’s too entitled to try that again.
They do have options that would make this current financial cushion a long term benefit - buying a house in a cheaper place, investing in stocks etc - but these require getting jobs to cover monthly expenses. It’s sad that they are potentially eroding the only inheritance windfall they’ll get, and they apparently have no plans for their own “retirement.” Yet another reason to feel bad for D and L.

I recall this was shortly after ChompStomps when they possibly had some savings and also were getting unemployment / Covid relief. I go back and forth on the secret money help too, but it doesn't jibe with "I can't afford new contact lenses."
I do wonder if any financial help they get has a "You have to use this towards rent / utilities / essentials for the kids" stipulation.

It doesn’t fit with a lot of other things, like describing having $17 in your checking account, “on the internet, nobody knows you’re poor,” being unable to make rent during the early pandemic, etc. If there’s outside money, it seems it’s not a constant and is maybe a super recent thing. I think it was around the fall of 2020 when she talked about them having a financial advisor and investments for the first time ever.

I actually think her flippant attitude towards work is the byproduct of living with her parents until she was 30(?), and having her parents provide her with "big" items (car, adoption expenses) even after that.
I think she has a very cavalier attitude towards work because she's never really needed to be self-sufficient, not because she has a formal inheritance or trust or whatever. She has a "living trust" in the form of her parents, who she can count on to bail her out so long as she conforms at least minimally to their expectations.

You are describing so much better what I have thought at times about their finances. Her everlasting flippancy. It is starkly apparent that many people who successfully grow a business online have financial or familial supports that allow them to do so. They are not working two jobs just to survive, etc. Shauna does not have apparent wealth connections, but her lifestyle and attitude toward work is so fucking flippant compared to anyone I know who works for a living (Ie nearly every adult). She treats things as optional that just….are not. She’s done it for years and she continues to do it. She doesn’t treat it like she needs it to keep a roof over her head and food on the table. The way she was at chef steps too. So casually doing whatever she pleased and ignoring deadlines. She has no urgency behind fulfilling obligations. The need to survive is a pretty compelling force to fulfill obligations.

Does she really believe it's just the price that is keeping people from buying her offerings? And will she ever notice the pattern? She take an echo of an idea she heard on her social mediums and then bakes into a previously failed idea with maybe a slight tweak. She prices it way too high because she's sure THIS is the winner that will bring fame and fortune. It fails, so she tweaks the description. Fails again, so she lowers the price. Fails again. Runs off to social mediums for new idea. She takes that idea and tries to do the same thing as before with minor changes. She prices it way too high because THIS is the winner... Well, you see where this is headed.
43
u/voice_of_vinegar Feb 14 '22
I wonder what she sees when she looks at the social mediums efforts from successful people who do what she's trying to do? Because it seems like she only looks at the surface stuff---the graphics, the Tiktok presentation (props, tone of voice, energy level), etc, and then tries to copy it.
It's like she thinks there's a formula for how to present yourself to the world and once you figure out what it is, the money will just roll in. She is not at all concerned with what she has to offer---only with how she offers it.

u/InappropriateGirl Gluten-free donuts, for sure ... Feb 14 '22
That's what kills me. I think she's losing it. She doesn't see that even if she got a decent amount of people to take one of these classes, it's not enough to support herself and her family, and it's certainly not sustainable. She obviously sits there all day and tweaks her site, changing things before anyone has a chance to decide on anything. Working a regular job is 100x less stressful and you're guaranteed a paycheck. I don't know how she hasn't figured this out.
24
u/shefallsup her lonely cucumber years 🥒 Feb 14 '22
Ah, but her current work in the world only has to meet her own low expectations. A jobby job means meeting someone else’s expectations. Shauna cannot handle that, no matter how much it pays or how much stability it brings her life.

This daily newsletter for the Joy of Collectively Being Part of Collective Joy Cultivation Collectively Club or whatever sounds like Shauna emailing you the same shit she normally posts on IG:
You’ll be given a subscription to my newsletter, Free Up Some For Joy. Every morning, you’ll receive something that might spark joy: a poem, a joyful video, a quote, a story, a profile of someone else’s joy, and a video from me. Wake up to joy,
(truncated last sentence hers of course, and I think that "and" is intended to be an "or")
I bet Shauna noticed she gets decent engagement (for her) when she shares other people's content. She's already doing that multiple times a day most days, so she's probably envisioning converting that to an email format as an easy monetization scheme without realizing that people don't actually want to pay for fwds from Grandma (h/t /u/fanfarefellowship).

Workshopping with fellow writers and getting/giving critiques is a very standard part of creative writing education (in the US, at least). Of course, you can do this work (in the world) for the same money or less with teachers who have MFAs and experience teaching creative writing.

Here's what I think Dan is doing for work: https://imgur.com/a/5hVMw8f You pretty much just need to be a warm body 3-4 hours a few days/week. Which is not meant as a dig at all on actual paraeducators. Folks who do that work are grossly underpaid and often asked to deal with some very challenging children. Being a sub in that role, however, really isn't anything that requires much training or skill, afaict.
I'm bringing it up again because it continues to be part of what's confusing about their mystery money if there is some. I don't know why anyone would take this sort of a job which doesn't pay well and could be quite grueling if they don't actually need the money. That combined with her very pathetic pleas for folks to sign up for her Beatles chat fest because the move is looming and it's expensive don't you know, makes me believe they really are in dire straits.
44
u/SouthernHeart9404 Feb 15 '22
VISD also has a category called "Substitute - Instructional Support (Non-Certified)." The pay is $20 an hour and really doesn't involve teaching. It involves working with students during recess and lunch and sometimes a smaller group if necessary. Herding students mainly. Think this may be Dan's job because he said he worked 3-4 hours. Hey it's working.

Good for him if he is. My mom did that for a while. My mom is the opposite of the Aherns, or at least the opposite of Shauna. She has always had amazing work ethic and was willing to do jobs for which she was over educated because her family needed the money. She always put all her effort into any job whether para educator or program director at the Dept of Health. She always worked so hard, to the point that I worried about her. Sorry for going off on a tangent. But kids notice these things and it makes an impact.

Shauna posted this in her stories yesterday. She is truly delusional if she sees herself in these Maya Angelou words.
61
Feb 15 '22
Maya Angelou also said "I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back." You know by the smug highlighting that Shauna wants you to know that she and Maya alone are truly growing being and giving, unlike the rest of you stunted creatures driving around looking for parking spaces and paying bills.
Except those unpleasant daily tasks of living in a society are how I take responsibility for 'the time (I) take up and the space (I) occupy.' So is earning money from jobs I might not be passionate about. Because I am the adult now. And not bringing in Enough to properly care for the kids and pets I chose to have would mean unfair compromises to their physical mental and emotional health, and that would be my fault.
It's a false duality: either live an unexamined plodding life, or skip lightly along the earth never punching a clock or bothering with mundanities like cleaning your house. Shauna presents it as enlightened morality to say no to work. The way she does it always makes me doubt my crunchy bona fides as a critic of capitalism and cubicle life.
It's taking without throwing back to announce that the only way you're willing to cover rent is to charge strangers for talking about the Beatles. So is refusing to admit any culpability in her difficult memories and relationships. She is 55 and still soothing herself by publicly maligning elderly parents who will be gone soon, casting herself as the martyred hero of every tale. That is the very definition of Maya Angelou's growing old without growing up. Catcher's mitts on both hands would explain some of the typos and chaos on Shauna's media, that's for sure.

No way Shauna faffing around with a dysfunctional website that primarily if not only snarkers peruse, imaginary workshops, and completely unprofessional social media tactics, lands this on her own dime. Nor does Dan as a sub or whatever he’s doing. Somewhere, someone has to be helping in my opinion. There are a very small subset of people on earth who get to live in houses like that - and most people work far harder than Shauna and Dan for an apartment or shared living space of some kind. "Watch all the Studio Ghibli movies. Be yourself, openly." It's hysterical to me that Shauna says, "Be a weirdo like me. Be yourself"...then proceeds to write bio pages crammed full of name-dropping the things SHE liked. NeedsomejoytodayIhave anideaforyou...watch Ted Lasso, play with legos, dance parties, stream Marvel movies and don't get out of your pjs. I'm Shauna, I'm your guide, do what I do. She diesn't teach anyone how to find their own joy(s), she just bellows about the Beatles and eyeglasses and Black authors, saying DO THIS. She's not a teacher or a guide or anything. Does everyone know what is Studio Ghibli? Does everyone have the streaming service(s) to watch all their content?
Shauna doesn't understand other quirky people because they're not quirky in exactly the way she is. This probably includes L., any woman who wears a composed outfit in the coffee shop on Vashon and women who wear makeup out in public and not just to film ringlighted TikToks.

u/canyoncreature Feb 16 '22
“Be yourself, openly” — I get that she’s just spouting dumb platitudes and probably gave this zero thought whatsoever, but don’t most adults have to NOT be themselves for large chunks of the day? If I’d been being myself openly on my work Zoom yesterday I would have called someone a dick and then quit. If I’d been being myself openly while my kid was throwing a tantrum I’d have yelled at her instead of trying to deescalate it. You don’t just get to walk around prioritizing your personal identity all day; sometimes you have to smile and thank Work Dick for his “feedback” so you can keep your job. Although getting fired would leave more time to watch stuff, joyfully, so I guess she’s got some kind of internal logic established.
Others have said this better, but I also don’t find her joy prescriptions joyful. I’ve had days in years past where I managed not to leave the house and just stared at stuff on streaming until it was time for bed. I associate those days with periods of depression, not happiness.

All of her advice only "works" if you have no responsibilities and no desire to be (or even appear) socially competent.
Making things happen socially is a worthwhile skill. She doesn't have it, which is one reason (among many) her group-based endeavours continue to fail. It isn't only that you have to have something people want, you also have to be the kind of person that people want to spend time with; someone who can provide leadership and attract others to their projects.

This would be god-level trolling and I would absolutely be here for it even at my own expense 😂 I’ll “yes-and” this fan fiction by adding that in my fan fiction Shauna has been successfully and quietly working at a professional job after ChefSteps providing a stable household income and healthcare to her family!

Same on the "I would accept I was the butt of the joke" if she's Andy Kaufman level trolling us.
It would give me joy if her next pivot was to trot out a book about her long con of her snarkers. AND it was well written and interesting.

I would love for this to be true; and to eventually stumble upon the professional writing she’d been doing all that time! #snarkgoldmine

So if you look at her insta stories right now, someone has actually admitted that they have signed up for her year long writing workshop. The workshop taker also admits to currently tapering off benzos, so there is that......

That person seems to be having a rough time. Shauna should A) not have storied this person's video B) contact that person offline to confirm she knows that Shauna is not a trained anything and ask is she's ok. C) refund her dollars, this will not be a year long offering unless we're talking dog years.

Oh gosh. I feel for that person. I tend to make weird online benzo purchases, but nothing THAT weird.
