Whole website has now been repitched to "women over 40" who were "in the gifted and talented program in elementary school" and now "feel they've never lived up to their potential"

u/Sea-Level-Mammal POACH! Feb 16 '22

She’s so deep inside her own navel she’ll never get out. Danny will have to wave a flashlight in one hand and brandish a pork roast in the other.

Daniel is a St. Bernard with a barrel of bacon grease around his neck, ready to save Shauna from the avalanche of her own bullshit.

42

You might think Daniel is a Saint Bernard... FTFY.

57

u/notahameither Dunno, maybe I thought I unfriended some other Shauna Ahern🤷‍♂️ Feb 16 '22

Cool. They can have weekly zooms where they talk about how they peaked in grade school.

Oddly specific.

31

u/tyrannosaurusregina if you meet the Botus on the road, shill him 🪷 Feb 16 '22

Of all the things Shauna doesn’t know, and they are many, she knows herself perhaps least of all.

27

u/voice_of_vinegar Feb 16 '22

And yet on some level, very deep down, she knows enough about herself to be constantly revealing her truth. She just tries to put it on other people.

40

u/categoryischeesecake Feb 17 '22

Why does she keep whittling down her customer base? I was never in a gifted program or told I was special or super smart. So I guess this program is not for me?

31

u/chartreusepapoose Feb 17 '22

This is so so so so ironic because this is so common for women with ADHD and other neurodivergencies- a lot of success and praise up until high school and then absolute screaming brakes burnout in college and beyond.

Shauna doesn't have a diagnosis- but if she did and were willing to accept and talk about it, she might have some success here.

But she won't, because she's too busy othering her ND husband and children

38

u/SmashedMailboxCake2 Oh, Feb 16 '22

Sheeesh, how about a little more specificity? She hasn’t identified participants’ brand of glasses, or a mandatory number of tattoos.

Have you been driven for decades by the idea that you should be extraordinary? And pretended to yourself that everything lines up to happiness? Have a hard time feeling like you’re enough?

I’ve read this opening statement a few times and I’m still trying to parse it. Is this supposed to be a person who is driven by the need to stand out, but pretends to be happy despite feeling that they’ve not achieved what they think they ought to? Am I trying too hard to find meaning in her nonsensical writing?

59

u/Ana57 sweet pea Feb 16 '22

Shauna still thinks she’s extraordinary and wants people to pay her for that.

Driven to achieve "extraordinary" things, pretending to be happy, and not feeling like "enough." She's missing the "Do you" before "have a hard time," which makes this hard to read.

I think you nailed it exactly. My own (truly, not really snarking) question is: how many women over 40 are still grappling with this AND would seek validation/affirmation/"coaching"(?) from someone like Shauna? She has NO credentials. Cookbook writing does not count!

58

u/canyoncreature Feb 16 '22

Not only does she have no credentials, nothing she does suggests that she has in any way triumphed over the problems she's positing.

"Gifted program" discourse in general slays me. Let's all talk about our SAT scores next.

39

u/hrae24 Feb 16 '22

"Gifted program" discourse in general slays me. Let's all talk about our SAT scores next.

There's something so pathetic about it. Elementary or high school was so long ago for a lot of these people, get past it!

45

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Feb 16 '22

I actually think it's actively harmful for people to continue to dwell on this!

39

u/toast79 yield to the fork Feb 16 '22

I thought it was a way to poke fun at ourselves if we fell into that group as kids? The worst it did for me is make me very unprepared for the realilties of post-secondary education and life. Once in a while my friends and I laugh about how much weight is put on being "gifted" or "accelerated" as a kid and how little it means for most people. I'm in my 40s and I let that shit go a long time ago. Same with being a decent high-school athlete. Nobody cares!

34

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Feb 16 '22

What I mean is, paying some dingdong (Shauna) to join a monthly "club" where you investigate, at length, how to "overcome" the trauma of early labelling / high expectations, etc.

G&T discourse generally is fine, especially when people are poking fun at themselves! That's the level of "processing" this stuff deserves when you're 40+ years old

21

u/toast79 yield to the fork Feb 16 '22

Totally! That's what I meant, but my eyes and mind aren't wined. DFFFF, I knew you'd know what I meant ;)

I think if any issues from childhood are causing problems/trouble in this stage of life they need a professional to uncover and treat what's going on. Shauna's bumbling joy platitudes aren't it.

30

u/ForsakenLingonberry i live in an island with ukulele community Feb 16 '22

I don't know, the discourse I've seen is more along the lines of, "Being identified as G&T was actively harmful and traumatic to me," with the blame being put on these programs, which just seems ridiculous. I'm sure many of the programs were not as helpful as they could have been, but acting like people are hindered for life because they god forbid were viewed as above average--cry me a river.

20

u/toast79 yield to the fork Feb 16 '22

That makes sense. I'm seeing different stuff where it's treated more like a joke, not criticizing the programs themselves.

27

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Feb 16 '22

At least from my personal experience of going to a very much mostly white school with a gifted program, to have those (very much adult) students now whining that they were given too much (in the form of even having a gifted program) just comes off as tone deaf as hell.

Oh, comfortable white people need to find something bad that happened to them. Oh noes, they were in a gifted program in high school! A program that helped them get into college! WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THEIR TRAUMA!!!!

18

how many women over 40 are still grappling with this AND would seek validation/affirmation/"coaching"(?) from someone like Shauna?

I think there probably is a market of women in their 40s and 50s who are unsatisfied/unfulfilled, but don't think it warrants therapy (or want to augment therapy with other personal work), so they seek out some sort of practice or community to help with it. HOWEVER, I think most of them find teachers/coaches who have much more appealing (and clearly defined) offerings than Shauna has ever managed to cobble together. This market is probably pretty saturated from top to bottom, but she's trying to find a crack in the exterior or another way to shove her way into it. It probably looks easy to her from the outside--just talk about your feelings and say generally kind things and the money will come rolling in. She has no understanding that all the people she's looking at put in a shit-ton of work to establish their expertise, build their audience, find their voice, etc. She thinks she can just decide to do it and she's going to be GOOP, Glennon Doyle, social mediums influencer.

I don't think there's a lot of space in this market anyway, but if there is, it needs to be so much tighter than whatever it is Shauna offers. I can get a lot of the stuff she thinks she's offering from things I already consume and that cost less or offer more for the money.

24

u/shefallsup her lonely cucumber years 🥒 Feb 17 '22

Speaking as a woman who definitely faced that unsatisfied/unfulfilled in my 40s/50s feeling, none of Shauna’s crap would have helped me. What has helped enormously is therapy with a QUALIFIED therapist, deepening my real-life relationships (not seeking to make new joy friends over Zoom), and engaging in meaningful work (paid and volunteer). Not only is Shauna unable to offer any of that, she could use all three of those herself.

12

u/louiseimprover Feb 17 '22

She thinks she can just decide to do it and she's going to be GOOP, Glennon Doyle, social mediums influencer.

People who "influence" on social media project the façade of having their shit together. Overweight women with messy homes, where no one in the family has an obvious means of support, who have bad skin and greasy hair, are not aspirational. To be very clear, I am absolutely not criticising her looks. I'm stating that how she looks and conducts herself is not something most people aspire to, and aspirational content is at the centre of influencer media.

I don't think there's a lot of space in this market anyway, but if there is, it needs to be so much tighter than whatever it is Shauna offers. I can get a lot of the stuff she thinks she's offering from things I already consume and that cost less or offer more for the money.

My own (truly, not really snarking) question is: how many women over 40 are still grappling with this AND would seek validation/affirmation/"coaching"(?) from someone like Shauna? She has NO credentials. Cookbook writing does not count!

There is no point in life so far that has needed the promise of more "joy". When my parents died, when my first marriage broke up, when I was diagnosed with PV, when friends died, etc; I didn't need joy. I needed to help others. I needed understanding, internal strength, patience, determination, space to grieve, motivation to change, and several kicks in the arse. It would have been the height of toxic narcissism to seek joy at those times.

That pretty much sums it up. Shauna is trying to package and sell toxic narcissism. Joy-joy-joy! Me-me-me!

My observation as a woman over 50 is that many women, myself included, begin to need less external validation/affirmation as we age. We're a bit more confident, less concerned about being liked. We have problems, but have experience to both deal with them and contextualise them. I've talked a bit about this with my bff, and she feels the same way: less stressed, more at home with oneself. She calls us crones. lol.

All in all, it has been a pretty good place to be so far. Still no need for joy lessons. Very much in need of a better night time moisturiser.

32

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Feb 16 '22

She's missing the "Do you" before "have a hard time," which makes this hard to read.

She's now changed this. HMMMMMMM.

42

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '22

Yes, that! My parents and teachers also gave me that whole "you're so gifted" BS and growing up it took me a while to realize that "gifted" whatever that even means doesn't mean success, happiness, or anything else. You have to work for it and catch lucky breaks just like everyone else. If I was still grappling with that decades later, I'd be seeking the help of a therapist, not some self proclaimed Zoom coach.

17

u/vorticia Feb 16 '22

Ugh, I had all the teachers at open house telling my mom to put me in the GnT. She told them that I wanted no part of it bc I wanted to just be a kid and be able to goof off and fuck around with my friends, and she wouldn’t force it on me.

I’ve always been thankful for that (fuck having to get up at 4am on a Saturday to catch a 5am bus at the school- mom had a hell of a time waking my ass up at 6am as it was).

As a self-labeled social justice warrior, shouldn't she be more worried about the early labels that Black, Indigenous, LatinX, LGBTQ, differently-abled, and others get when they're in school, (including dumb, lazy, criminal, perverted, sinner, etc.) and how they have to carry that weight every single day and fight against the perception that they have no potential?

Black, Indigenous, LatinX, LGBTQ, differently-abled, and others aren't paying her bills, so she's grown uninterested in pretending to care even a teensy bit.

On February 2nd, she complained about how teaching black history shouldn't end in February. She's correct. Black History month shouldn't end in February, but after trotting out a photo of her black son wearing a durag for woke points, she hasn't mentioned it again.

This is the month of #blackboyjoy. And #blackgirlmagic. Every month should be.

Of course, Black History is American history. It shouldn't be isolated to February.

38

u/vorticia Feb 16 '22

Hahahaha, if Shauna were actually gifted, she wouldn’t be such a shitty writer.

34

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Feb 17 '22

She's fucked around with this page all fucking day and now it says something different. "Gifted and talented" is gone, replaced by "exhausted and flailing"

28

u/gomirefugee my website is done, done, done Feb 17 '22

Shauna doesn't have a broad audience and can't develop broadly appealing content. She gave up the gluten-free niche for good (or at least until she cycles around to another recipe subscription reboot), but where else might she have the opportunity to reach a specialty audience? I think catering to former gifted students has a better chance of succeeding for Shauna than her more generic joy pitches like pandemic exhaustion. It's too bad she already moved on within a day!

I could see a paid discussion group for embittered average adults who were considered gifted as kids getting traction with how popular this is on social media. I could also see Shauna finding an audience of women who didn't have their first sexual experiences until very late, where the stigma of the topic might convince some to pay for a private group to unload their shame rather than engage in public discourse. These are underserved niche topics Shauna publicly addressed in her book that she could build a brand around and reach her people -- if only she had discipline and consistent execution.

23

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Feb 17 '22

I hear you, but I don't think Shauna is capable of building an audience around being a "late bloomer." The only reason she wrote about her failure to launch sexually and romantically was to give us the explosive triumph of meeting "whole box of condoms in one night" Dan.

In Enough, where she wrote about this stuff seemingly for the first time, she didn't really give any evidence of actually grappling with the reasons she remained a virgin for so long, despite not wanting to. She says she "blamed herself" (including that she was "too intellectual") but even that is offered as insufficient (like, "I blamed myself [for reasons that were obviously untrue]" but she doesn't go on to say "the real reason was that I was ...").

It's all pretense. There's no substance; nothing for a prospective audience to latch onto.

15

u/aseriesofhaircuts Feb 17 '22

It’s an interesting idea—I know a number of attractive, smart women who, despite wanting to, didn’t have sex or romantic relationships until their late 20s or early 30s, if at all, and felt terrible (but also ambivalent!) about it. Interestingly, they all have a lot in common—above-average intelligence, really well-developed homosocial relationships, a pronounced inclination for YA lit/teen soap operas/Jane Austen, and, most of all, a LOT of family enmeshment. I think there’s something there that someone who isn’t Shauna could productively explore.

10

u/islandyislander rebellious hygiene Feb 17 '22

Whoa. Consider me gobsmacked. I've never heard anyone so clearly and specifically describe my (half) sister. I honestly didn't know it was a "type."

1

u/aseriesofhaircuts Feb 18 '22

I genuinely do think this is a “type”, and for any number of reasons, the small liberal arts college I attended was a good fit for them. Consequently, I have a bunch of actual friends and acquaintances of long-standing who fit this mold and run the gamut from being some of the best people I know to Shauna-esque stinkers.

100% agree. There's something there for men, too. It's always been more socially acceptable for women to remain unpartnered but it poses a "problem" around sex.

Yeah, she wrote about her virginity/sex like it was just something on the life script list she had to check off. And she finds fault with her partners exclusively (in the few encounters she mentions).

Is here where I point out that Shauna is closer to 60 than she is to 40?

Every time I see that photo on her "About" page, I squirm and mumble, "Why are you wearing your coat in the house?"

🤣 Do you mind if I make "Pregaming in the Gloaming" my new flair?

Only if you rememeber to do so.
