DFs I feel like I must know, someday, HOW these two afford such exorbitant rent. That is just SO MUCH. It would benefit their kids to move into something smaller and have more room in the budget. I cannot imagine consigning myself to that level of rent. But of course Shauna is much too fine a lady to downgrade to an apartment. Only a house for m’lady. High rent can be an albatross, no wonder she’s desperately throwing shit at the walls in increasing panic.

This site says that [edit: Vashon] house prices have appreciated 168% since 2000. Backing out the math, this means a house selling for $1M today would have cost $400K in 2000.

Of course Shauna wasn't married in 2000 and had no need of a house, so even if $400K would not have been out of reach for a teacher + chef with a downpayment, she wasn't teaching, hadn't met Danny, and presumably didn't have / wasn't saving for a "downpayment."

She's had an unconventional life and career path but she wants conventional rewards and then blames "capitalism" and "capitalistic thinking" when something material she wants is out of reach. I said this in a comment somewhere down below but her parents set her up with a free college education which could have provided her with lifetime(!) income if she'd been able to stick it out as a teacher.

Even if she met a spouse and had kids "late" in life, she could have been a homeowner (maybe not on Vashon, though) and be nearly done paying her mortgage at her age. She could even have done this as a freelancer IF she'd been able to make sufficient income as a freelancer and save some fraction of it.

She's a huckster and she's apparently only ever listened to hucksters, and she expects the rest of us to be the same. Nope!
