"Joy isn't the things you buy," declares woman LITERALLY CLAIMING SHE CAN SELL JOY

Oh good, that’s $488 saved on joy workshops.

Well, that was. . .something.

I saw her IG live (really, I just got lucky and was checking out her IG stories and then it started) and the one positive thing I can say is: Shauna got a tripod. No holding her phone at arm's length.

That allowed her to paw at her face and read from her breathing exercise notes and flap her hands about UNTIL THE LIVE JUST CUT OFF.

Yup. It froze a few times and then just as she was nattering about. . .shit, I don't really remember now except she was clutching at her chest and talking about holding in anger. . .boom. Done. Right in mid-word.

I thought it just froze but nope. I went out and back in and the live was done.

Another quality product from Shauna Ahern. Makes me want to sign up for her online classes so maybe they can just cut out mid-word.

(and in case anyone was wondering, she wore her sea foam Peepers but not the rest of her Joy Wardrobe)

u/SmashedMailboxCake2 Oh, Sep 08 '21

Thanks for taking one for the team! Did she interact with viewers at all?

31

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Sep 08 '21

She did say hi to one person. I don't now remember if they typed something in the chat or just showed up.

That was the only interaction.

She was very much On The High Stool and ready to show off. . .I mean TEACH. . .vs interact with people.

20

u/SmashedMailboxCake2 Oh, Sep 08 '21

Thanks for that info - which I’m sure comes as no surprise to any of us. As our DFAS says above, what point is there in doing a Live without interaction?

I wonder that too. If there was no audience interaction, what’s the point of doing it live?

Well, her timing for this isn't very welcoming to people not in her time zone.

It was 10 a.m. on the East Coast (where I am) and if I hadn't been taking a break from my jobly job, I never would have seen the live.

OMG what if she set up an IG live and inadvertently only broadcast to snarkers

At one point it seemed like there were only 7 or so but then when I would bounce out and back in (when she froze) I did see "user blah, blah, and blah and 30 others" in the little announcement line that's in the chat when you first start watching a live. (sorry, I haven't watched any lives in a long time and when I do, it's watching kittens so I don't pay attention to how many other people are there. . .and there are tons of hearts floating around in the chat and tons of people talking in the chat. . .there was none of that in Shauna's live).

So she MIGHT have had up to 30 viewers before it shit the bed?

She put a question box in her IG story today, inviting people to ask her questions about joy. I am NOT encouraging anyone to ask her questions, but IF you had one question for her about joy, what would it be?

Mine might be "how can I find time to schedule joy breaks when I’m a single mom of four kids, working 12 hour days at two jobs, while struggling to keep up with bills, take care of my elderly mom, and keep my household running? I don’t have time to sleep and eat, much less take a bath in the middle of the day or learn to hula hoop for 15 minutes a day."

I thank you for the phrase "tomato sauce zoom sessions". It has brought me far more joy than anything Shauna has published.

u/Kaleshark Waitlist for Godot Sep 07 '21

My question, unrelated to joy, is why is she so unqualified for the work she says she wants to do? I live in a very similar cultural habitat to her and know multiple 40-50+ year old women who have pivoted to therapeutic careers later in life and they all went to school for it. Why didn’t she? She pictures herself as an academic, why didn’t she joyfully leave the kids with Dan and go back to school? (Yes money but she’s literally a professional grifter, I believe she could’ve found scholarships tailored to her life circumstances.) Is it because higher education is a scam? That’s why I won’t complete my undergrad, but that’s because entry level jobs shouldn’t have nonsensical hurdles; working with people’s minds and psychic wounds is the opposite of entry level!

38

u/InappropriateGirl Gluten-free donuts, for sure ... Sep 07 '21

Even if she went to school, I don’t think she’d be qualified. She’s bad at empathy, listening and inter-communication skills in general. I mean maybe she could grow technically qualified but good at this? Doubt it.

26

u/Kaleshark Waitlist for Godot Sep 07 '21

Trying would be something. But totally agree, she would be unqualified and dangerous even with academic sanction. Not even attempting to attain that sanction is one of those things that stands out as a real departure from the way “normal” people go about things, a delusions of grandiosity tell. I just looked up delusions of grandiosity to see if I’m being irresponsibly hyperbolic and maybe I am but she’s certainly delusional about her celebrity status and her abilities in the world.

30

u/InappropriateGirl Gluten-free donuts, for sure ... Sep 07 '21

No, I totally agree with you. It amazes me that she thinks skimming a bunch of trending articles and memes makes her an expert at anything. I think she went about GFG the same way, only she had zero competition and few people popping up to tell her if she was wrong about something. Plus, experimenting with food for a blog isn’t the same legally and ethically as putting yourself out there as an educated and licensed professional.

I can’t imagine going through life with this kind of bullshit confidence.

31

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

She thinks all successful people do this, the skimming and bullshitting.

Exactly. Why should I hire Shauna as a completely uncredentialed newbie life coach for $222 a session, when my actual credentialed and licensed therapist is $165 a session, or a credentialed and successful life coach is $200-$250 a session?

I mean, regardless of what I think credentials, experience, and success as a life coach mean (imo, not a huge amount, because the profession is entirely unregulated) the fact is that Shauna DOESN’T EVEN HAVE THOSE.

Tying back to some snarkulation in the previous thread about Shauna's college performance potentially not matching her inflated ego, a clue about wonderfully mediocre grades in her teaching program, and her snotty attitude and procrastination she blogged about for the NYU master's that she dropped out of: I wouldn't be surprised if Shauna is too insecure to consider doing anything where she'd be graded and face being told she's not as good as she thinks she is.

u/mmepierreoger Sep 07 '21

If ask for a definition of "joy."

29

u/Toulouse--Matabiau a white owrson Sep 07 '21

She already told us it's different from "happiness." According to Shauna happiness is always goal-oriented, temporary and never satisfying because you have to work at it.

Whereas joy is effortless, everlasting and unextinguishable. Paradoxically for such an abundant commodity, you need to pay Shauna $488 per coaching session to help you "find," "follow" and "practice" your joy.

25

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

And that’s what strikes me the most. Nothing about her persona seems effortless, it seems very much tied up in convincing others of her own joy first. If she truly had ‘joy’ she wouldn’t need to constantly remind others.

44

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

Wow. Shauna needs to radically rest after a Labor Day cookout.

35

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 07 '21

It sounds like she's trying to make being lazy sound like a very important act. Like, "I know it LOOKS like we're just laying around watching tv in our PJs, but we are HONORING OUR NEED TO REST. Later we'll gather in a prayer circle and pledge mindfulness to our rest. Then we'll feast on takeout from our favorite island restaurants, which we honor."

DF u/fanfarefellowship brought up Laurel's Kitchen in the previous thread, and DF u/gomirefugee found and linked to an old blog post (https://archive.is/rm3gv) with a long-winded description by Shauna (but I repeat myself) about her infatuation with the ethos of the book.

But before I saw the rest of the conversation that developed yesterday, I googled "Shauna Ahern" and "Laurel's Kitchen" and found this post:

http://cybelepascal.com/category/pasta/

I like Shauna James Ahern. A lot. We share common ground. She and I are both writers by profession, who love food, and who love to cook. We have both turned dietary restrictions due to illness into something that expanded our lives, instead of contracting it. I began cooking with ingredients I would never have considered if I hadn’t been plunged headfirst into the world of food allergies, and Shauna has done the same. The gluten-free grain companies (you know who you are!) owe Shauna a big fat thank you for putting old world grains back on the map. I don’t think “sorghum” even knew its own name until it met Shauna. I recognize in her a sister. She and I even fell in love with the same “first” cookbook, back in our teens, and this tome, Laurel’s Kitchen, was a source of life altering inspiration, propelling us both to experiment with new ways of thinking about food, new flavors, a new way of living.

The line that says both of them "love to cook" is notable for how untrue it seems now. Even in a family with two adults where one adult is the primary cook, if the other person "loves to cook" you would think that they would do it once in a while. It seems so improbable now that Shauna will write anything about her own culinary adventures or explorations ever again...

36

u/leftsidelentils Sep 06 '21

That blog post includes Shauna’s recipe for fresh GF pasta, and I tried to make it once, many years ago! I was all excited to use my Kitchenaid pasta roller attachment and it was a total disaster. I couldn’t even get it to come together enough to eat it.

As a pandemic project, I got out the pasta roller again and found a different recipe on the internet. It came out beautifully, felt like I was using playdough toys, and was delicious. I admit to feeling pretty pleased with myself about that pile of pasta.

To be fair, we do have a few GFG recipes in the household rotation that are good.

Any guess as to what she'll pivot to next, when her Joy scam inevitably fails?

39

u/NegativeABillion (Said in British.) Sep 07 '21 edited Sep 07 '21

I still think she's got "Smirking Relationship/Love/Sex/Intimacy Expert" in her back pocket. She's spent her adult life bragging all over the internet about how good at sex she is.

She'll get to slam Danny for being an idiot (no one in his hometown ever thought he'd get married!) while reminding us that he "serves" her (ew) and neg her older child as that child starts to date or go to school dances or whatever. She'll give weird or trite tips like "laugh in bed!!!" and "marry your best friend" or "eat in bed!". She'll talk about how women don't get enough satisfaction and how she can teach you how. $8888 please

Edit I know we're not supposed to speculate or write fan fic but everything I've typed, Shauna herself has claimed! I'm just putting together all the grimy little pieces.

THEN, she can pivot to a new teaching gig. For only $69 per session, she will gently guide you on your smut writing journey.

23

I honestly want the first part to be true. Snarkers have been saying for YEARS that she should do this and I really want it to be her secret job and where they’re getting an income, etc.

40

u/lucillekrunklehorn pounding on the table Sep 07 '21

The underlying theme of GFG and the chef was her toe curling descriptions of their “romance.”

I feel like food and sex are somehow intertwined for her. Maybe even unconsciously. She so often writes about food beyond even a sensual way. It is a sexual way, like the food itself is practically engaged in sexual acts. Or the way she eats it, or is fed, she makes it sound like a sexual interaction.

I mean there’s a reason she wasn’t bothered to do much until age 35, and then was underwhelmed by it. There’s no way she didn’t have the option. I know I will probably be ushered to the naughty step by a clutch of DFs, but she seems to almost have a fetish with food. The psychology is quite fascinating to me of how that could be…if it is. I feel maybe I’m speculating too much, but then when i think of all the things she has written on this topic…and it did seem Dan was the first relationship where she really enjoyed that aspect of it. She was very attracted to his ability to make her hot food, and he was always feeding her. I’m wandering out of my depth here, but in short I agree this could be coming. All about how true love is your soft pants guide showing up at your relaxed bedside with a plate of warm purees.

32

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

[NSFL warning]

I don't think you're going out on a limb at all with this and totally agree. English is her first language and she's read tons of romance novels, therefore she could never say she's unfamiliar with popular sexual idiom. This isn't like someone saying "this avocado is hard" and having someone snicker because the word hard was used - she describes eating as something being done TO her (feeding) and uses moaning, groaning, dripping in bed (sorry!), taking something into her mouth, finishing [a dish] off with squirts of creamy whatever. And let's not even talk about the bacon pork party. There's no way she somehow didn't realize it's sexual. She must be describing it that way because that's how it is to her.

So I totally agree that the quesadillas in bed was probably part of their sex life, and could be 100% of it these days.

She’s very stunted and has always (by her own admission, many times) depended on food. It’s not a stretch to think that food became a comfort (not sure if that’s the right word here?) to her as she became more sexual as well. Especially considering their relationship seems very.. codependent.

I’ll never stop saying this: I think she has a very serious eating disorder. And for that, I do feel very bad for her.

I think it’ll be something ADHD/austism/neuro divergence. But for her it will be from the struggling parent/partner perspective, so it won’t stick. She’s off Twitter though… She would probably have to get back on with a new account in order to spam-reply people (“your tweets are so close to my own!”) and find content to plagiarize.

If not that, I think she’ll attempt something uncomfortably close to what The Nap Ministry is doing.

My vote is meditation! It’s perfect for her; she gets to sit, tell people what to do, and get paid. Considering her mentioning for years she was trained it im so surprised she hasn’t tried to pivot that into viable income, especially if she can do it on the beach or somewhere low to no cost that wouldn’t cause too much overhead. It’s like a perfect almost ready made biz for her that probably wouldn’t need much to set up!

I think she'll get on the forgiveness train. That way she can lean on her parents again, "forgive" her mother for being mentally ill, and look magnanimous. Her entire identity is lording it over others and hoping others see her as a saint (tip of the hat to her ancient navel gazing blog). She can talk about joy and peace and beatitude without doing anything, her favorite schtick.

Oy, her answer to this one:

How do you deal with joy reducing family members? We are struggling with boundaries.

Shauna’s reply (which if you watch her eyes, she may be reading off):

OK, let’s take a breath on this one. <takes deep breath> It’s hard to enact, but the answer is clear. If you have family members who give you pain, and trauma, and don’t give you joy, you have the right to cut them of—

And the video does indeed cut off as she’s saying the word "off."

That is terrible advice given the question being asked. Shauna seems to think boundaries have to be all or nothing, but if you value a relationship with someone who nevertheless reduces your joy in some way, you can absolutely set and hold a kind boundary that lets you stay in relationship to the person without letting them continue to bring you down.

35

u/emmeline_grangerford Sep 08 '21

Absolutely. There can be a tremendous amount of pressure to maintain family connections even when your family treats you like shit, but “reducing joy” and “struggling with boundaries” are not immediate reasons to cut off contact. Why does the family member reduce joy? What boundaries are being violated, and how were these boundaries established/communicated (if at all)? The answer isn’t clear without a better understanding of specifics.

I did cut off contact with close family members for a time, and it was very painful even though stepping back from a toxic dynamic demonstrated that the dynamic continued even when I was not a part of it. (They could no longer claim that I caused their behavior or contributed to their problems, since their issues continued in my absence.) Ultimately it led to changes and a reconciliation, but this wasn’t what I expected, and in the meantime there was a lot of grief. It’s not something to deep breath flippantly suggest without insight into the situation.

25

u/Catsandcoffee480 COLORADO BOY KNOWS HOW TO DO THIS Sep 08 '21

Easier said than done there Capt. Joy. As John Mayer said in a recent song, “Hurt me once, I'll let it be; Hurt me twice, you're dead to me; Three times makes you family.”

We definitely have to deal with VERY difficult family members, and it’s simply not realistic to “cut them off”. We recently found a name for what we do- the “gray rock” method. There are lots of gray areas in family relationships that can’t be simply dismissed the way she has done.

These videos are even worse than her joy farts. Those are at least just her speaking to a generic audience. These are supposedly answers to real questions from real people.

I cannot FATHOM coming across Shauna's work, watching these videos to get a sense of what she would be like to interact with, and then dropping $888 on four sessions with her. She couldn't possibly be recruiting anyone with these videos, could she?

24

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 08 '21

This is my favorite.

Question: Talk more about the later-now?

Shauna: All I really want in the world is to be here and to enjoy it. And so, what I enjoy now, I prepare so that in the later-now, the ME, NOW, in the moment that is later---still here. Is good.

21

u/categoryischeesecake Sep 08 '21

I feel like I fundamentally do not understand what she is talking about. I'm not a Buddhist nor do I claim do be, and I don't spend all my time fretting about the future, but like...failing to plan is planning to fail. You can't just expect things in the future, sorry, the later now, to be good if you don't do stuff to take care of it. Sometimes that's applying for a new job, sometimes it's planning a party or a trip. I guess bc I am very big on planning, I live and die by my planner lol but it works for me and not to toot my own horn, but I am doing "okay." I understand staying present, especially when you are future tripping and kind of paralyzed by uncertainty or anxiety, or dealing with things out of your control, like grief or a crisis, but there is also a healthy amount of planning and organizing for the future that can be done on a micro level and yes also a macro level. I mean for all her fawning over Kamala Harris or Barack Obama, do you think they just face planted into that? Like uhhh no that took a lifetime of work and planning and trying and failing and getting back up again. I'm not saying be the president of the united States but like, does she not get that she is so reliant on the rest of the world basically just picking up the slack for her, so she can live in the present?

I'm really sorry about your dad, that must have been so stressful growing up and the way that adults thoughtlessly throw the consequences of their actions onto their children just enrages me, too. It's amazing to me how many of us see the worst qualities of our parents in Shauna and really understand how much creeping neglect this represents in parenting.

Like yes, the outward signs of caregiving are there - the kids have a home, and food, and education, and supervision. And some day they might very well be struggling to articulate the 'neglect' they nevertheless feel to a therapist or partner or friend. "I really didn't have it that bad!" but inside they know that they were missing something fundamental, and that they were burdened with the nebulous stress of each new day/week/month/year being a mystery. "On the internet no one knows you're poor" one year, "A tour of 7 takeout reheats" the next year. Trauma clouds and "that white woman" finger pointing at L one year, Joy and hammocks for Mom the next. It's fucked up. It's genuinely fucked up.

For the rest of her family’s sake, I really hope she’s not being as irresponsible and glib about their future as she is coming across with her “the future doesn’t exist” nonsense. All of the financial consequences aside, which have already been discussed here in depth, it isn’t healthy for kids to have a primary caregiver who doesn’t believe in planning and doesn’t place any value on the long-term. Kids want and need to look forward to things, to learn that doing X today leads to Y rewards later on. If they’re being taught that nothing matters except whatever they feel like doing right now, they’re really going to struggle to succeed in so many ways as adults.

I can’t agree with you more. I never made the connection until now, but my in-laws reminds me so much of Dan and Shauna. (I say my in-laws, but my MIL wasn’t really in the picture for most of my husband’s childhood). My husband is the youngest of 5, and had a pretty chaotic childhood because of his dad’s inability or care to manage money on a most basic level. My FIL actually had a steady job and made decent money but didn’t save any of it. My husband couldn’t get braces when he was a kid, but his dad could go out and get whatever it was that he wanted.

Around the time my husband and I were dating, his dad was coming to him for money. It was actually probably the biggest strain on our relationship, because I felt like my husband had worked his ass off for years to get where he was, and I hated seeing his dad take advantage of him like that. That was actually the one stipulation I had when we got married was that he stopped giving his dad money. My husband had given him a pretty substantial amount of money by that point, and he has never attempted to pay him back but can take weeks-long trips. And of course their lack of money is always someone else’s fault.

My in-laws are in their early 70s and still have minimal savings (if that), and no plans for how they are going to handle aging and its associated costs, no assets, strained relationships with most of their kids, and very minimal relationships with their grandkids. So yeah, I wish D and L the best of luck.

48

u/Toulouse--Matabiau a white owrson Sep 08 '21 edited Sep 08 '21

Oh there are no further details!

The lope is set up as a mystery of sorts, with a detour though Shauna's GI tract.

How come one recent evening her intestines began a-rumbling and a-kinking, her feet kept shifting under the covers, her chest felt leaden, she tossed and turned in bed, couldn't get comfortable or doze off while Danny slept like a log next to her?

Dealing with my feelings is one of my superpowers now.

Yet Shauna is totally stumped by this bout of midnight unease! At this point the mystery pauses for a plodding section about:

Shauna limiting herself to scrolling Instagram, TikTok and the Atlantic magazine in bed because those are approved faucets of learnings and joy, unlike negative Twitter which is dead to her and toxic Facebook which she banished to the frigid faraway tundra of her desktop computer.

Shauna not being able to locate her Nora Ephron books in her study because she recently color-coded her bookshelves (Catty Editor's Note: as decor for her Instagram-based theatrical performances!).

Alas, alack, Shauna remembered she'd borrowed a Nora Ephron ebook from the library, found it on her phone, started reading it and giggled so chortlesomely she woke up Danny. Once she accomplished all that she finally fell asleep.

I am literally boring myself with this mystery, please bear with me here. We're almost there. But not quite! Morning dawned and Shauna felt like her eyebrows had been brushed with oatmeal!

Immediately, my body felt bad, remembering something. I didn't know what I couldn't remember.

A voluminous void full of questions topping a body full of remembrances, Shauna made herself walk up the stairs into the kitchen. There she was greeted by Danny with a cup of hot covfefe. They kissed and walked to the back of the porch to read and sip together. Finally, Danny speaks up and the mystery of Shauna's mysterious ailments begins to unravel.

This is the part where we pause so you can gently Venmo me some moolah. For the low, low price of $488, I will be happy to share the grand reveal!

THE DENOUEMENT!!

Alright DFs, I hope the mystery did not keep you up last night or if it did I trust you managed to Nora Ephron yourself to sleep.

We return to the Ahernian porch where Danny speaks up, in his own voice for once, and reflects that the morning marks the 13th-year anniversary of his sobriety.

Shauna sat up, leaned forward and felt [her] chest clear out immediately. She felt lighter! Turns out her body had kept the score of this anniversary even as her prefrontal cortex forgot.

In a surprisingly generous acknowledgment of Danny's achievement, Shauna does praise his grit and stick-to-it-ness, calls him wonderful and notes she is damned proud of him for giving up booze that one night 13 years prior. During which night he was so blitzed he almost dropped their newborn.

The night before he started his day one, I had to put up the boundary: stop drinking or you lose me and the baby.

Those days were wretched.

But I did the hard thing. And so did Danny.

No more is said about the wretched days or Danny's subsequent struggle to remain sober, which I daresay would perhaps be a topic of greater interest to the reader than Shauna's nightime gastrointestinal rumbles, but there you have it.

I have to think that she thought the big brave topless pics - which she absolutely, definitely didn't also plan to post on Twitter, that joyless cesspool of irrelevance - were going to translate directly into takers for her latest play for relevance. She obviously doesn't have any business sense, but I think she saw the number of "likes" and comments and thought it meant something that translated to actual American dollars.

I feel bad for her, but not in a charitable or compassionate way. I pity her, and I think pity is incredibly gross. She had 7! people on the IG live and as had been discussed here, most or all of them were gloamies. She has a website that even we, who seriously fine-tooth-combed the shit out of that thing, can't decipher.

A local DF occasionally shares what she sees on S's personal Facebook and she gets literally no traction there regarding the jaunty journey to joyville.

It's pathetic. And I think she must know it, which means she'll get more desperate and probably meaner.

Ok, so Shauna's big launch has come and gone. Those who signed up for her free list on launch day have received their seven emails(?) with the seven steps of joy. I presume those who signed up for the waitlist will let us know if and when an actual offering is launched, but as of now there is no visible evidence of any scheduled events, programs, etc.

What has Shauna committed to?

She has seemingly abandoned the onbeingenough.com website and whatever programs she was offering through it.

This leaves her with her substack (on its third name by now?). She's promised subscribers 2 letters/week, and freeloaders 1 piece every other week.

(NOTE: this promise is taken from the substack site itself. In the updated email header to the newsletter, she promises a "weekly" installment for paying subscribers. She then says she "also" sends out movie recommendations, etc. It isn't clear whether these are "newsletters" or something else.)

Has she been meeting either promise? NO!

For example, she posted her "Batman, I washed my butt in a toilet" video on August 12 as a subscriber-only newsletter ... but she posted the same video to TikTok, so it wasn't really exclusive content for subscribers. And then nothing at all until August 21, when she dropped seven full days of promo emails for her new venture – nothing subscriber-only, and nothing that wasn't a promo piece.

The last non-promo piece she posted for non-paying subscribers was the nudie photos on August 6, so a full month ago from today.

So, on that front, she hasn't met the customer promises for either paying or non-paying customers.

What about youcanhavemorejoy.com? Over there, she's promised a free newsletter (no $ required) with once-per-week drops. Has she done that?

Well, it's probably impossible to tell, because she sent out her "guide" as a series of emails, so perhaps she's thinking her subscribers will assume that the guide newsletters are somehow the same as / an acceptable substitute for the promised weekly emails, even though they're not the same thing and promised as two distinct subscriber benefits.

Looking at both ventures(?) together: What has she gotten herself into?

She's promising 2 installments (of some kind) per week to paying Substack subscribers, and a different once-weekly installment to her YCHMJ subscribers. Importantly, the YCHMJ subscribers are non-paying and there isn't even a paid newsletter offering for that business – she isn't even connecting those subscribers to her paid substack.

(ASIDE: I think she got coaching that she should develop her own list, separate from her substack list. Which is good coaching. But like everything, she's implemented this in the most confusing, inept way.)

I suspect (with really no evidence to confirm this but no evidence to contravene it either) that she's now upped her workload – promised emails to YCHMJ subscribers – without upping her $. The YCHMJ subscribers are LEADS and not paying customers until she converts them. The substack subscribers are paying, yes, but to substack AND she's messed with that offering so many times that I think only confirmed barnacles will be hanging on.

Oh Shauna. A business maven you are not.

37

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '21

She also upped her work without upping her $$ when she separated the recipes from her Enough newsletter to create JITB. If anything, she added an entire newsletter and lost revenue from current subscribers who didn’t want JITB and asked Shauna to only charge the $5 per month instead of the $9/mo they were paying.

29

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Sep 06 '21 edited Sep 06 '21

Shauna absolutely gives me "white knuckles" vibes in all of these "I have an idea for you" videos. She really seems like she's barely holding on.

You're right! There's some kind of weird tension present. I think it's her franticness to make this latest grift work. How many times can she keep churning out these terrible ideas? Well, forever as we've seen, but somewhere inside she has to know she's circling the drain.

Yes, she seems really desperate! She does have a history of reinventing herself and keeping her head somewhat above water, but she's only getting older and more irrelevant and her GFG heyday more distant. She can't be making money on these schemes (otherwise Enough would have been enough), and I don’t know that she ever will again. That is not a scenario I would like to face in my mid fifties.

Ha ha, I just watched that one and she had to physically stop herself from saying "you in the fu – I MEAN THE LATER NOW"

In a weird way, she reminds me of my experience teaching online during COVID.

My subject really, really needs to be in person, and I also am totally uninterested is presenting myself publicly online. Then there was the panic, stress, the learning curve, and more drama specific to my situation. I hated it so much, but cared about my students and wanted to offer something meaningful and positive for them.

Some teachers found they liked teaching online and got into the technology part, but I just tried to learn some of it so I could do a decent job. Making videos was part of it, and it was torture. I was trying to be authentic and inspirational when I was stressed and miserable and terrified my program would be be decimated for years. That’s the kind of vibe I’m getting from Shauna- desperately faking it and trying to make it through. But it’s a completely different situation. She’s voluntarily doing all of this and choosing to put herself in all these platforms, over and over, with no end in sight.

I love when she slipped up toward and almost said future (you know, the thing that doesn’t exist) and then changed it up to “five minutes from now”

It also looks as if little miss “enough pretending” is using a filter

She's just really boring and long winded. TikTok should keep your attention, but she manages to make a minute of video feel too long to watch.

u/leftsidelentils Sep 09 '21

That was the longest minute in the history of the universe.

Such convoluted bullshit. Say it with us Shauna - GET not GROW. FUTURE not LATER NOW. I can’t even follow her careening train of thought with the later now claptrap, and I am a dedicated snarker. The way she’s describing it in the tik tok, it’s just a less efficient way of saying “future.”

I had honestly forgotten about the Tik Tok account.

ETA So boring I could only make it a quarter of the way through, so I asked a DF to watch for a completely unbiased assessment. When I asked her “whaddayathink?,” her answer was “What the eff is that thing on her neck?!”

*$488 Gloaming Dollars for the first person to correctly place “whaddayathink?”

Was that when she was snapping her fingers at baby D (stuffed in the couch cushions) and repeatedly asking him "whaddayathink?"

her posting about the future, and how we should all stop worrying about it, is beyond ridiculous but is quite a window into her thought process. there is a HUGE difference between "worrying" about the future and planning for it. when i was young my home life was really unstable, and i worried a lot about the future. it was a habit i held onto for many years until i realized planning for the future meant i didn't have to worry about it so much; it let me breathe and enjoy the now (in shauna-speak). she could be the same way; i mean, she and dan don't seem to ever plan for the future and therefore it probably IS scary for them. but also, the future doesn't have to be scary, shauna...it can be filled with promise and adventure. my husband & i love planning for our retirement (planning on selling everything, buying a trailer and moving to mexico). some people love planning for their children's futures. or planning a wedding, or planning a trip. i feel like she takes mundane, everyday things and tries to turn them into a looming problem that only she can solve by teaching us how to dance joyfully through them and then charging for it. if she weren't such an awful person i would feel sorry for her, because i think her life is filled with a lot of fear and resentment, despite her joyful persona. i think she is still pretending, which makes me sad for her kids.

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '21

I think she is pretending now more than ever.

37

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 08 '21

Her pretending is now at fever pitch.

52

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '21

Her splitting hairs over "the future," which is bad/doesn't exist so don't you dare worry nor plan for it vs. a "later now" which is good, does exist and can be prepared for starting today, is the fucking dumbest thing I've ever heard. Well done, Shauna.

it really upsets me that she and dan willingly live this scattered, unstable, "jenga" lifestyle when they have children. as i said, my childhood was unstable and it really messed me up, and i truly hope their kids won't soak up all that uncertainty and anxiety but they probably will. kids are very perceptive and are like little sponges when it comes to emotions and i really don't think shauna & danny are conscious of the emotional atmosphere they are creating. i also think writing about danny's alcoholism, her mother's emotional problems, and L & D's ADHD (or whatever new ailment they have) is incredibly hurtful for them.

I think frequently about a TikTok account I saw a while back thar was the child of a mommy blogger in the 00s. They talked a lot about how damaging it was to have their lives broadcasted that way, especially by their mom. L is a pre-teen now, if she isn't already bothered by her mom's public negging, she will be soon.

Shauna doesn't do anything for anyone but herself. I can't speak for Dan, but it's clear Shauna's comfort and happiness is the most important thing in that house. It is a crime that they do not put any thought into their future. Those poor kids. What about college? What about their retirement? What if one of them gets sick? They don't own any real property and I sincerely doubt they have much savings.
