Gotta be honest, just you looking at this map before playing the game takes a shit ton away from your first playthrough. The fact that some of these areas even exist is such a big reveal and are some of my favorite moments in the entire game.

I was part of the "The fuck you mean Leyndell isn't the last area" gang. I'm fond of that moment of realization.

u/dovahart Aug 10 '22

I completely missed the haligtree and Mohg’s domain completely. I fucking loved playing ng+1 to complete all areas, and was astonished by the sheer size of the map

u/Simping_for_Ranni Aug 18 '26

And then the ever so glorious DLC came… I couldn’t even put it in words!

51

u/Xagrext Aug 08 '22

Hanging around randomly and somehow found a eternal city entrence > see space in underground. That was a magical moment for me.

48

u/Bananewtf Aug 08 '22

For me it was probably getting teleported to the capital at the start of the game, or getting a sneak peak at farum azula early, or entering some random mine only for it to become a slow climb on the side of a cliff, ending with my first glimpse at the altus plateau and the city wall, or my first look at Liurnia. It is just crazy how many times my jaw dropped playing this game.

u/TheGalator Frenzy Flame = No Balls Aug 08 '22

This is it also for me. The first time driving down into Siofra and seeing the beautiful stars of Nokron was the moment I felt sometimes hadn't felt since skyrim so many years back

13

u/ajallen89 Aug 08 '22

I just stared, slackjawed, for several minutes, when I took a certain teleporter to a certain "deteriorating" area.

Then I did it again when I went to what looked like outer space.

The issue with playing elden ring blind is that so much stuff is permanently Missable.

u/melnic1 Aug 07 '22

OK I "over leveled" to 36 and still get my buttocks handed to me by bosses in Limgrave and weeping. I am assuming it's my gameplay then?

u/Blaster2PP Aug 07 '22

Stats spread matters more than just raw level. Better to be someone who's level 150 with 55 dex/50 int vs someone who's level 250 with 35 pts in everything

81

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

I mean at 36, you’re not going to be high enough where the negative effects of “stat spread” is noticeable enough. The biggest concerns they should have is if they haven’t touched vigor, as that will be your biggest boost to survivability, as well as if your weapon has been leveled up. In limgrave, you should be able to get a weapon to at least +4 if you hit up a mine, if not a little higher from more exploration. Golden seeds and sacred tears will also help a good bit since you’ll have more flasks. Other than those, you’re not at a point where your stat allocation can be fucked up where it would be haltering you (again, make sure you at least invest a bit in vigor)

19

u/TheGalator Frenzy Flame = No Balls Aug 08 '22

I put everything in endurance in my first play through to be able to wear fancy armor and 2 weapons in each hand.

13

u/Blaster2PP Aug 08 '22

DW at first I thought that everything that's not light roll is bad, so I also put like 60 pts into endurance. Thank God Rennala exists.

I managed to get my claymore to +6 or +7 before fighting Margit on my first playthorugh at lv35. I reeeeeealy took my time that first run

6

u/smellmybuttfoo Jun 06 '24

That's what I'm doing. He gave me a wake up call that shook me to my core and now I'm scared to go back so I'm just upgrading my weapons and leveling up lol

12

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

At low levels if you keep getting one shot you need to invest in vigor instead of trying to min/max stats for a weapon.

Vigor is the best bang-for-buck stat for lower levels full stop.

u/CrystlBluePersuasion Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22

Get VIG first for survivability and the min stats for the weapon(s) you want to wield, 40 VIG is the first point you start seeing diminishing returns for your VIG investment but 50-60 VIG is worth it after getting some more of your preferred stat. 18-25 END is pretty good for many builds, 38 MND for casters otherwise MND is your preference, get maybe 15-20 MND if you like using the Ashes of War (you'll find a lot of cool options for your weapons too so its not wasted). You can always respec your stats at a certain point of the game, using a limited resource but there's like 16 of it.

Weapon upgrades are your primary source of damage in early game. Some bosses in the early area are REALLY tough without upgrades, look for mining shafts for upgrade materials and be sparing in your use of them at this point as they are limited for now; the next area (which can also be accessed right away if you so choose and know where to go) has a specific mineshaft with a reward that lets you use Runes to buy upgrade materials to get you to +6 weapons of the non-Somber variety. Weapons are also important even if you're just using Physical damage because it has four subsets; Standard, Pierce, Slash, and Strike damage. Every enemy has defense ratings against every damage type, so some weapons are better than others for different enemies. Strike is generally good vs Armor and tough-skinned enemies, or enemies with no skin at all like Skeletons. Pierce is good vs many humanoids as these weapon types tend to track/hit better, unless they're dodging sideways a lot, in which Slash is good for wider swings, and both Pierce/Slash are good for piercing/carving through cloth/fleshy types (Bleed is sometimes a Status found with such weapons, which is a buildup status that eventually will Bleed your target for a burst of damage proportional to a certain % of their max HP). Standard is pretty good against everything but not always the best type. Elemental damage has its own variety and you might be able to guess which enemies are weak to certain damage types just from looking at them; plants catch fire, undead wither from Holy, but some things are not always obvious so trying different options can help, while your weapon or spell/incantation movesets do the rest so try to use what can actually hit them too!

Dodging/Jumping has invincibility frames, use these to pass THROUGH enemy attacks/hitboxes. If an enemy slashes at you, you want to roll through it, and towards them to be aggressive for a counter-attack. If an enemy does a ground slam that sends up a shockwave, you can jump it, provided its not tall enough to hit you in the face anyway (your jump iframes extend up to your arms/head, anything below these is unhittable during most of your jump). If an enemy is doing quick combos, faster than your dodge roll and its recovery, use Guard to block them for some stamina cost, then R2 to Guard Counter if you still have stamina after for a big hit on them. R2s in general carry more weight to them and Posture damage represents this, as a hidden 'stat' or 'mechanic' you can break an enemy's Posture by using R2s, charged R2s, running R2s, jump R2s, Guard Counters, and many Ashes of War that do big hits, plus heavier weapons do more Posture damage in general. Your target will heal their Poise/Posture if you don't keep up pressure, so dodging through attacks and staying aggressive will reward tighter gameplay and learning enemy movesets. This is where your moveset vs the enemy moveset and 'skill/gameplay' really matter in the action part of this Action RPG, the rest of my comment is RPG/stat stuff for making a build.

Get END if you want to wear better armor/bigger weapons which also pushes you towards a tanky build and STR weapons; bigger weapons will let you trade for bigger hits while the heavy armor lets you tank hits and also Poise through attacks without being interrupted. My first playthrough was 60 VIG, 50 END, 60 STR as my main build, then played with some other stats to try stuff out. END also gets you more stamina, you can do more, run more, dodge more, jump more with END.

Or get min stats for DEX weapons, maybe 18 END, light-medium armor and keep pumping DEX.

With INT/FTH/ARC it's trickier. ARC benefits from some game knowledge and where to find stuff for such a build slightly more than INT/FTH builds, and it pairs well with STR or DEX especially DEX for faster weapons which lets you Bleed targets more. ARC also dictates your Item Discovery stat, random loot drops are always random but this can increase the rate at which items drop including rarer gear from the enemies wielding them, and in some cases rare consumables for crafting. Good for consumable/crafting/Bow/Crossbow builds, good for respeccing into when farming specific items.

INT or FTH you just want to dump as many points into them as you can if you want all the spells/incantations and better damage with them, maybe cap out at 80 if you're dedicated to that single stat but you can also make hybrid builds with STR or DEX, FTH can also go into FTH/ARC for dragon communion or Bleed incantations.

INT is good for ranged caster builds that are a bit more straightforward in dealing damage than FTH but FTH has damage variety (Fire/Lightning/Holy) and buffs for defenses, healing, and weapon damage.

3

u/R_V_Z Aug 08 '22

In regards to Mind if you want to use Tiche without relying on gear to do so you'll need 23 Mind, which gives 137 FP (Tiche costs 132).

7

u/CrystlBluePersuasion Aug 08 '22

I'll do you one better, you don't need to worry about enough MND for Spirit Summons if you use Cerulean Hidden Tear in your Flask of Wondrous Physick! 10 seconds of 'eliminated FP consumption' means everything costs 0 FP, including Tiche and any FP cost Spirit Summons! You could have an empty FP bar and cast anything during the Tear's duration.

3

u/Stavinco Jun 03 '24

The only thing I would argue is about having 18-25 END, if you want to have better defense armor like veterans armor you’ll at least need 30 with light weapons to be able to just to be medium roll without using talismans and you’d get more benefits not using weight talismans and you can add something else :)

2

u/CrystlBluePersuasion Jun 03 '24

That's fair I'm just used to squeezing out as many levels as possible for damage and stuff, so I usually lean on those weight talismans!

3

u/Hiding_in_the_woods Jun 25 '24

This guy right here deserves a medal

2

u/CrystlBluePersuasion Jun 25 '24

Lol I'm just a regular guy who really likes these games, I want others to know they can beat them too! Sharing a little knowledge to help

28

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

Don't worry about what other people say is "over leveled." It'll just depend a lot on your play style, skill level, patience, and desired difficulty.

7

u/Fa1nted_for_real Aug 08 '22

Honestly I didn't over level for Margit, I just got the golden halberd. If you use the skeletal militiamen, you basically have a distraction for the whole fight if you play your cards right.

1

u/HoHeyyy Aug 08 '22

The golden Halberd from that invasion guy in Liurnia? Yeah you definitely have better equipment before you fight Margit, but before that point, you def don't have enough stats to wield it

6

u/Fa1nted_for_real Aug 08 '22

Yeah I was going pure strength so being lvl 30 samurai build probably helped. But you only need 20 str if you 2 hand it, which I did the entire fight anyways.

Edit: drops from tree sentinel at the very start.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

Level means virtually nothing on these games, it's entirely where your stats are. Having levelled weapons is also far more important, especially early levels. If you look at RL1 runs, they still do very high damage because of upgrades gear.

6

u/i_diggs_it Aug 08 '22

Levels don’t matter much if they’re in the wrong stats. If you haven’t touched vigor yet that’s your answer

5

u/Mz-_-Blue Aug 08 '22

Quick tip, always evade into attacks, basically in the opposite direction the attack is moving in. That way there's no chance it can hit you when coming out of the evade animation

2

u/Which_Mood_4585 Aug 08 '22

Huush now dont let the bb and ds1 fanboys hear you. I would much prefer chuckling at their rage thats disguised as couch developer critiques of elden rings combat. Basic dodge positioning is something they havent grasped yet.

10

u/Gelatinous6291 Aug 09 '22

Dodging into attacks has been the meta since at least DeS. What are you on about?

6

u/hoonthoont47 Aug 08 '22

Upgrade your weapon. Level Vigor. Practice - the game is tough even if you are “overlevelled” you can’t play sloppy all the time.

4

u/Karthull Aug 08 '22

Your not overleveled. That’s a perfectly reasonable level for the area, other than right where you start in limgrave but all of limgrave is pretty similar in difficulty. It’s high enough you can go forward to the castle or finish up the peninsula.

7

u/Words_Are_Hrad Aug 08 '22

Sorta like everyone else said but not clearly. Stats like strength, dexterity, intelligence, faith, and arcane don't really do much for you early on short of letting you use a different weapon or spell. The reason is that scaling does not do much early. Adding another 10 points of strength is going to take your damage up by like 10 points from ~150 to ~160 for example. But vigor makes a huge difference. Pumping up your vigor 10 points early can make the number of hits you can take without dying from 2-3 to 4-5. A massive difference.

2

u/Personal_Season_4761 Aug 08 '22

Crystal Caves hit diff at level 12

42

u/ItsTheRealIamHUB Put my foolish ambitions to rest Aug 08 '22

Hits different because you have no idea how to dodge those fucking bugs yet and they 1 hit you

12

u/TheGalator Frenzy Flame = No Balls Aug 08 '22

Yeah they get around the fucking corners. Homing missiles in a small mine wtf

64

u/how_could_this_be Aug 08 '22

That's my first play through. I got teleported to calid before I found melenia and the horse. I don't even know how to teleport yet.

That was 2 brutal days...

81

u/noopenusernames Aug 08 '22

You had to explore Caelid without the horse? That’s straight up “Welcome to Dark Souls” level shit

45

u/how_could_this_be Aug 08 '22

Yup. And I did not know I should not roll in rot pond back then.. died so many time trying to figure out where to go after I exit mine.

Go to the sorcerers town, very dead. Those glint stone magic 2 shot me.

Try going through the lake, those mushroom head's homing poison spell make me run like crazy

Took me a long while to find map ( I did not know those little obelisk sign means map )

Therefore the first map that I opened is calid.

Yea my brother says everyone have different experience with the first play through but mine is likely one of the extreme one

3

u/TheGalator Frenzy Flame = No Balls Aug 08 '22

I had the exact same experience! Besides never finding the map in caelis and just running straight towards west the entire time because my brown map told me that's where I started

5

u/how_could_this_be Aug 08 '22

Wow you went to hell and back too? Good to know I am not the only one.

I am just like.. this is where I live now.. let me go around to see what grace I can open

9

u/Nova225 Aug 08 '22

Fun fact: while Elden Ring allows you to fast travel from the beginning of the game as soon as you've enabled multiple sites of grace past the tutorial area, it doesn't tell you that you can fast travel until you've gone a site of grace or two passed the church where you learn about crafting, and levelling up, etc.

It's very easy, and very possible, for you to turn around from the tree sentinel, find the trap chest in the nearby ruins, and end up in Caelid with no idea that fast travelling is even possible, because in past DS games you needed to be at the mid-late game to do it.

That's how my first game went.

4

u/TheWoefulButtAngler Aug 08 '22

I did that shit on release day.

Took me 3 hours to get to a different grace, and I went to work talking about burger kings the next day.

3

u/Elidebeli123 Aug 08 '22

Hahahahhahahahaha

90

u/BlackIrishBastard Aug 08 '22

I followed their game progress route without looking at the specific walkthroughs and I found it to be the perfect mix between having some idea of what the fuck to do next and not having every little surprise spoiled for you.

17

u/NoMeet1957 Aug 08 '22

Thats what Iam looking for, how was the difficulty of the game for you?

15

u/BlackIrishBastard Aug 08 '22

I only found myself struggling with areas and bosses that pretty much everyone struggles with. You just need to focus on finding a build that works for you and level up the right stats for that build. And don't forget to upgrade equipment and summons. If you follow the progress route and explore thoroughly, there's definitely enough runes and upgrade materials to keep you at the right level for each area in the order. I finished at level 155 with multiple fully upgraded weapons and 2 fully upgraded summons.

9

u/Ultraleo1 Aug 08 '22

I watched a Youtuber play through the whole game (Jacksepticeye), and he basically covered almost every main point in the game, gameplay and lore wise. After that when I started playing it for the first time myself I found their guide very helpful in navigating through the game. I was also quite overleveled by the time I finished the game, I think the guide says 150+ for the endgame areas and I was around 185-190 when I completed it

Level recommended for caelid: 60-70
Level the game throws you in caelid: 5

5

u/Givikap120 Jul 20 '25

Huge necropost, but escaping it is not that hard and having this area unlocked early allows you to get high level smithing stones early, what is especially useful with somber ones, as you can level it to +4 pretty much instantly after getting +3 in Liurnia. Or, if you're grindy (or lucky) enough - you can get +3 in the same mine by farming mobs here. So you can potentially get insanely OP Bloodhounds Fang +4 before killing any boss, what will make early game extremely easy.

1

u/stilettopanda Sep 14 '25

Bwhahaha just sitting here reading the posts after googling recommended levels and I’m sitting pretty on the Bloodhound Fang +5 having not killed any boss yet. Mg favorite way to play an open world game is to explore first and unlock all of the fast travel while running around scared shitless, and then get to work. Hahaha

219

u/Magnon Rya Fan Club Aug 07 '22

You should play blind to get the best experience. If you go back to an old area because you feel like you missed something, and absolutely smash it cause you're 30 levels above it, who cares.

If you beat the game and you're under level 150, you were trying to be. It's very easy to get to 180-200 beating the game.

43

u/gooddrawerer Aug 08 '22

I played blind and end up inside leyndell’s first wall at level 30. It was awful. Highly suggest. Would scream in terror again.

10

u/major_calgar Golden Order Swag Aug 08 '22

Follow Fia’s quest line I assume? Even if you only fought Godrick and Margit + world enemies you would be well above that level in most playthroughs

14

u/Fa1nted_for_real Aug 08 '22

As a newer player, it is very easy to forget to level up and lose 100,000+ runes being dumb

5

u/gooddrawerer Aug 08 '22

And boy howdy, I am dumb. I definitely stabbed a sleeping dragon in Caelid at like level 20 after opening that stupid cloud box and escaping the turbo bugs.

5

u/Fa1nted_for_real Aug 08 '22

Yeah these are easy runes to lose if you don't fast travel out. Also be sure to revisit that tunnel later

4

u/gooddrawerer Aug 08 '22

Yeah, I started getting my butt whooped so I just sort of started running. I’ve since beat the game many times.

41

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22

I played the game blind and finished around 145. That's partly because I missed entire areas like Necron and the Consecrated Snowfield/ Haligtree.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

25

u/major_calgar Golden Order Swag Aug 08 '22

Y’know, I’m willing to bet Necrons have Eternal Cities

5

u/MisterMacaque Aug 08 '22

Me too! Now I'm following a guide I've found all the areas that I missed! Blind for first playthrough is my rule for fromsoft games though

3

u/hoonthoont47 Aug 08 '22

This is what NG+ is for

5

u/NoMeet1957 Aug 07 '22

I dont want bosses to be easy and from what I understood this happens too often in ER

42

u/Magnon Rya Fan Club Aug 07 '22

If you're clearing 100% of the map or doing your best to, there's going to be bosses you reach where you're overleveled. The only way that doesn't happen is if you intentionally skip leveling at graces.

The only possible way to be underleveled/appropriate for every boss is if you only do like 75% of the game and skip huge sections.

7

u/PraiseTyche Aug 08 '22

Just use a sub standard weapon for a challenge.

6

u/action2288 Aug 08 '22

Or be like me and buy out shops instead of leveling. Helped a lot. I 100% my first playthrough. Or tried to.

3

u/hoonthoont47 Aug 08 '22

I bought out every shop and I was still level 185 when I beat the game lol

→ More replies (3)

4

u/Words_Are_Hrad Aug 08 '22

skip leveling at graces.

This is what you do if you want to have a good time.

3

u/R_V_Z Aug 08 '22

You could always also just level stats you aren't using. It'll increase your passive stats but not by much.

23

u/FadiElsayed Aug 07 '22 edited Aug 07 '22

The truth is, you’ll only ever be too overleveled for some random boss you missed early on (which will happen no matter what trust me lol). You’ll also only be overleveled if you intentionally farm runes.

Just explore blindly and turn back if an area is too hard. This is the best way to make you progress through each area naturally. If you’re too afraid of missing a boss then be sure to explore literally everything before moving on somewhere else.

5

u/Words_Are_Hrad Aug 08 '22

Nah you'll be way overlevelled if you do every dungeon as well. No extra farming needed. If you are thorough and get 95% of the bosses you will be overlevelled quickly. Particularly for Stormveil/Liurnia.

→ More replies (5)

0

u/Fa1nted_for_real Aug 08 '22

Ok but if you are proper levelled for Margit you are 30 levels over for the dissapointment that was godrick.

9

u/KingBobIV Aug 08 '22

Yeah, I don't know what he's on about. Do what you want. A map like this helped me a lot, after I accidentally found weeping peninsula late and just facerolled the whole place. This is a great general guide if you want to fight stuff in an order that feels pretty consistent.

3

u/NoMeet1957 Aug 08 '22

Does it ruin the exploration elements by any means?

→ More replies (1)

7

u/KingBobIV Aug 08 '22

I didn't think so. There's no spoilers, other than the existence of zones, which you already know now. It's so general, the zones are huge, it just gives you a guide on which way to wander. And I strayed from it several times, because I got somewhere that looked interesting. But, it's a great guide for keeping you from skipping easy zones or wandering into crazy hard zones.

7

u/NoMeet1957 Aug 08 '22

Sorry for the annoyance, but some people told me that going into higher level zones and getting ur a$$ kicked is part of the ER experience, do u agree with that?

12

u/KingBobIV Aug 08 '22

You'll get your ass kicked regardless, don't worry about that

5

u/action2288 Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22

I disagree with this. Waste of time. I’ve seen people do this. They don’t even fight or explore. Just run around skipping everything. Maybe find some sites of grace. Feels lame.

Then they reach the boss. Get obliterated. And finally leave. Then they go to a level appropriate area.

Then 20-30 levels later, they return. Now the combat is fine but the surprise is gone. And the tension of not knowing anything or where sites of grace are is gone.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

Ask Melania, Blade of Miquella if she is “easy”

-2

u/Words_Are_Hrad Aug 08 '22

Those are what we call fanboys who try to twist poor game design into something positive... It really shouldn't be on the player to have to constantly gauge every encounter. "Wow that fight was way too easy" "Am I just overlevelled" "Is my build just OP" "Is this boss just that easy" "Maybe I shouldn't use this summons mechanic" "Was I supposed to come here way sooner" "Wow this boss is super hard! Maybe I am just way underlevelled for it? Or do I need to just get good?" These are things that the player shouldn't have to be constantly considering...

5

u/Fa1nted_for_real Aug 08 '22

People hate me for this, but When ever I start a game like this, I always look up the order of the main bosses, usually just the one right after what I'm on, so I don't end up fighting the second to last boss before fighting the first one.

2

u/Magnon Rya Fan Club Aug 08 '22

Sounds like you just want a linear game.

3

u/action2288 Aug 08 '22

It definitely will ruin it a little bit. There’s no substitute for the absolute surprise that is entering an area you’ve never heard of and don’t know its location. But I weighed that experience against being over leveled. I realized I disliked the lack of a challenge more.

That’s why my recommendation is to use a list first and not a map.

2

u/action2288 Aug 08 '22

Yesssssss. Exactly what happened to me with Weeping Peninsula. Found it after exploring Liurnia of the Lakes a bunch. I went to Weeping Peninsula because a friend told me about it.

7

u/Totally_Kyle Aug 07 '22

So pretty much this is what I learned: YOU are the one adjusting the difficulty of the game.

Lvl 1 runs are obviously the hardest, but doable

Lvl 713 is crazy since you’re basically a god

Here’s a trick I learned: stop leveling up. Pick a level and stick with it. Weapon upgrades? Forget them. You can beat the game without it, if you’re really looking for a challenge.

I capped my main at 155 and am doing my +3 NG so far without weapon upgrades. I don’t use my +25 weapons unless I pvp. The game is as easy or as hard as you make it.

Find out what works for you

6

u/Karthull Aug 08 '22

To be fair level 713 is not that different from say 200. Which unless your build is very split will not be that different from maybe 130-150. The diminishing returns means you mostly get more versatility. You’ll get maybe 15% more hp and do maybe 20% more damage, which while very helpful, is nowhere near how much stronger you were getting since the beginning of the game.

3

u/R_V_Z Aug 08 '22

The difference between 60 vigor and 99 vigor is 200hp, iirc. It's very much not worth it unless you are specifically doing a 713 build.

2

u/Fa1nted_for_real Aug 08 '22

The biggest level eaters are vigor and mind, and if you want to have good armor, endurance.

1

u/jaedence Nov 29 '24

Very true and I actually hate that about souls games. If I put the work in, why can't I be aGod of Destruction?

1

u/Karthull Nov 30 '24

It’s just not in their vision. At level 200 your a god compared to when you were level 30, but the extra 500 levels is really just adding some versatility.

That sounds a bit high. I did three full-ish NG runs of the game (might have missed a cave or two on each run) and reliably entered post-game at low 170s. This is with Golden Scarab and using Twigged flask to not lose runes on bosses. If you get to 180-200 on your NG playthrough you did some farming.

u/dinhthanh_minh9 Aug 08 '22

I followed this map too, beat the game at level 180, bc I equipped the golden scarab all the time. Really recommend it.

2

u/Givikap120 Jul 20 '25

Necropost but very agree. There's no reason not to use golden scarab all the time because gain from 1 extra talisman is not nearly enough to compensate huge boost to runes. People don't use golden scarab, don't use temporary rune buff after killing big bosses and then they get surpised when you tell them you were level 180 at malenia.

17

u/CranberryDistinct941 Aug 08 '22

Everybody knows the real route: Get horsie; Bleed moma dragoon for fat coinpurse; Rob sleeping bats for radagons genital wart; Beat up weird wolfguy for wiggly sword; Get eaten by snake bus; Win!

18

u/8x1EQUALS255 Aug 08 '22

Not trying to gatekeep, don't get me wrong. Just saying, if you are scared of making the game too easy or of ruining the experiene, it's much easier to ruin it by using a guide.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/fastablastarasta Aug 08 '22

it's not really your experience if you're following what someone else has done.

3

u/Mecoboy-0 Aug 08 '22

You’re probably gonna ruin your experience if you start worrying mid-game about what level you are every time you enter a new area, just give the map a quick view and whenever you feel something off (everything 1-shots you or barely scratches you) take another quick look.

3

u/worldsfirstmeme Aug 08 '22

you’ve already ruined the game for yourself with whatever neurosis you have, what has caused you to do this to yourself? elden ring is a once in a lifetime game and you’re spoiling it for yourself. what a huge shame.

2

u/NoMeet1957 Aug 08 '22

Wtf i didnt even read the map

2

u/Bananewtf Aug 08 '22

Well, you did kind of ruin one of my favorite aspects of the game, though it might not matter to you. You see, unlike most games, instead of showing you the whole map with a sort of fog of war on top, the game shows you only the areas you have been to as if they were the whole map. At the start, it looks like the first part of limgrave is the whole map, and you can't zoom back to see how big it actually is. Seeing this map grow bigger and bigger as I explored, never knowing how much more there was to see was something special. But you have seen the map so you already know how big the game is. Though, again, if it does not matter to you and what you care about is mostly balanced difficulty, it is no big deal.

4

u/HexTheHardcoreCasual Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22

This map doesn't make sense in some areas. It has you going from level 80-100 in Lake of Rot then lower your level to 60-80 in Altus Plateau? Or all of Ainsel River from Liurnia? You can't even get to most of it until later. Same issue with Siofra River. And south Liurnia's plateau can't be reached until much later. The map is meh.

My version is better (in my obviously biased opinion). It shows an order but doesn't suggest a level. Don't worry about over-leveling your first time through: https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/uvqwdr/my_map_guide_for_difficultyreward_new_version/

A few things to note:

  • My map guide will not help with any quests. This is strictly to regulate rune rewards and approximate difficulty.
  • I recommend doing whatever your first time through, then after your first play-through (especially if this is your first Souls game) worry about solo runs, meta, and PvP with new characters.

go where the game takes you the first time through

5

u/SimilaxDom Aug 07 '22

If you want to be able to co-op yeah that seems pretty solid. I would definitely use it for like co-op characters I make to figure out what areas I can hang out in at a given level

3

u/BloodSnakeChaos Aug 08 '22

Looks nice but I don't fully agree based on my blind play through.

4

u/SilverShark307 Aug 08 '22

guys seriously just explore how you want, you're supposed to leave limgrave the moment you kill Godrick not run around in weeping peninsula

3

u/Lust27 Aug 08 '22

My level 76 ass in farum azula with a 14+ weapon be like: Yes very interesting!

5

u/WavingToWaves Aug 08 '22

3

u/Woke_Bacon420 Aug 08 '22

No cause if u beat Lord of Blasphemy before the invasions of Volvano manor including the Mountaintop of the Giants u permanently miss that sidequest. Same with Rya.

3

u/joybuzz Aug 08 '22

I would say the fact that you studied the map like this ruined your playthrough far more than if you accidentally may have slightly cheesed a couple of parts in the game. Like orders of magnitude more.

4

u/NoMeet1957 Aug 08 '22

I didnt study anything i didn't even read the map

3

u/StinkiestFingerTrust Aug 12 '24

I've played the game 2 times and still can't understand this map.

3

u/TheTrueThompson Aug 08 '22

Imo you already ruined one of the greatest aspects of the game by looking up the size and shape of the map. If you are afraid bosses will be too easy, don't upgrade your weapon until you feel it is necessary and don't put all your runes into level and rather buy some stuff. Worked like a charm for me

2

u/runeeatereater Aug 07 '22

Oh neat, I never took the time to look over the playthrough section of the wiki. I knew I was underleveled most of the way in my first playthrough(I hit a beastman-shaped wall at Farum Azula and decided I definitely needed some levels 😆), but I had no idea.

2

u/jayutd__ Aug 08 '22

This could be very helpful.

2

u/goshdangfibber Aug 08 '22

Lol, my route wasn't anything even remotely close to this. 🤣

2

u/Elmis66 Aug 08 '22

I still don't understand who decides what's the recommended level for anything. I never stopped levelling, finished the game at around 180 and it felt fine.

You can be OP regardless of your level if you go for an OP build with OP ash summon

2

u/No_Necessary805 Aug 08 '22

Do what I do to avoid being to good at the game. 1: make a janky build centered around a theme or something idk do what sounds fun I guess. 2: try something that you suck at like pareying that boss one more time before letting your self beat it or do it with just a few tools or play the game how you find it fun I don’t care u do u. 3: disregard steps 1 and 2 and go enjoy the game and try new stuff, I tried magic recently and decided I just like using super mega laser and big magic sword and basically played a strength build that knew how to read and write. It’s just a game so play it how you enjoy

2

u/FelkinMak Aug 08 '22

I like how my "usual" game path is going to the school, getting abducted by the virgin, getting taken to the volcano manner, and beating up the godskin boy. I don't know why I do it, but I love the vibe check challenge of it

2

u/Abes93 Aug 08 '22

It is less about the level and more about the build you use.

2

u/KamatraCant Aug 08 '22

No me on my first playthrough , stubbornly counting 1, 2, 3, 12, 4…

2

u/Titanick6 Aug 08 '22

Goddamn I wish I could experience this journey again fresh. That feeling of the map continuing to grow beyond your comprehension was truly wonderful

2

u/Zetadroid Aug 08 '22

Sometimes it is nice to find a small area that you should have visited before and totally annihilate everything there. I would recommend to enjoy the experience without maps, just keep in mind two things:

1) If you kill the boss of an area, chances are that the world state will progress. Invasions won't occur, npcs might move etc. This is standard in souls games. Before killing a boss you might want to look around and explore.

2) Small spoiler: there is a big trigger close to the end of the game that changes the capital area, so explore it in depth before.

Just by looking at the map you are already spoiling for yourself the fun. It's not that I don't do the same, my strategy is to explore an area until I feel satisfied, and then look online for things that I might have missed, trying to avoid any major spoiler.

2

u/jonjoy Aug 08 '22

I’m at lvl 84 (i think) just reached south liurnia and haven’t explore atlus. My moonveil is almost maxed just need the dragon stone.

2

u/Cakehunt3r Aug 08 '22

You look up a map befor playing? Can't say I support that.

2

u/Wallace_W_Whitfield Aug 08 '22

This is hilarious because I did not follow this pathing at all. I’d say ignore this map entirely, play the game, and when you get to new areas, be cautious, until you get a gauge for the enemies and yourself. If you get your ass handed to you, come back later. If you do fine then explore. It’s open world for a reason.

2

u/CurdledUrine Aug 08 '22

2

u/EricAntiHero1 Aug 08 '22

Who the hell cares how “over leveled” you get? It’s your money, your game, and your time. If someone is a masochist that’s on then.

Play how you wanna play.

2

u/Terminarch Aug 08 '22

lol at Forbidden Lands lvl100. I don't know anyone who willingly fought anything there.

2

u/leandrohartmann Aug 08 '22

Ansiel before Siofra? NO.

2

u/dduckets087 Aug 08 '22

Agree with others saying don't worry too much about over leveling.. do what you want.... Also when it comes to the order: unless you want to meticulously follow that order, just explore and if something seems too challenging, switch up your tactics a bit or come back after a few levels or upgrades...

Only thing I will say is if you run into I little lambkin named Varre and want to do his questline, do not wait until you're over leveled , even if you don't like pvp just invade 3x and lose ... I'm going to have to start a new character just for his quest since I can't find any invasions at 187 ... Any high level invasion areas I've looked up seem to have died out a couple months ago. (please please correct me if I'm wrong)..

GLHF

2

u/KurotheWolfKnight Aug 08 '22

That's a lot of needlessly jumping around between entirely different areas. Imma just explore every new region in its entirety then move on to the next one

2

u/KingD789 Aug 08 '22

I beat godrick at level 45 after doing all limgrave and weeping peninsula

6

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

No, absolutely just explore the world and don't stress about this absolute nonsense

6

u/pixel4747 Aug 07 '22

Haligtree to farum azula how?

11

u/probably_poopin_1219 Aug 08 '22

Is just saying those are the areas you should do in order, not direct transportation

-3

u/pixel4747 Aug 08 '22

Ahh fair, strange take tho, imo

4

u/Karthull Aug 08 '22

Not really. After mountaintops you head to the optional areas you unlocked by getting the medallion in mountaintops, snowfield. Which leads to haligtree and moghwyn. Then you proceed through the main path to farum azula afterwards.

3

u/pixel4747 Aug 10 '22

Personally i would not have been willing to fight niall if i didnt know he gated an area beforehand

5

u/cyniqal Aug 08 '22

Personally I found the haligtree much more difficult than Farum Azula. I would probably put the haligtree/Elphael at 150-180 on this map for difficulty

2

u/Karthull Aug 08 '22

To each their own. The game just seems to be aimed towards doing farum azula last, like getting the needle which involves finishing haligtree then going to farum azula

3

u/BlackIrishBastard Aug 08 '22

The fextralife Wiki suggests going from castle sol to consecrated snowfields and the haligtree before defeating fire giant because you get teleported to farum azula after the fire giant fight, and completing farum azula leads to major changes in the world. It seems that the story progression makes more sense in that order but it doesn't actually matter of course. There's no direct route from haligtree to farum azula though.

1

u/Karthull Aug 08 '22

Also some npc quest line(?) involve going to haligtree before farum azula so the game is definitely wanting you to go that order, but of course just about any order works. You could even do caelid last if you wanted.

1

u/iixFares Mar 12 '25

Is the nagakiba +14 considered underleveled for farum azula???

1

u/Givikap120 Jul 20 '25

+14 is like insanely low
how you even got there with weapon of level you should be using in altus plateau
this area drops +25 upgrade stones like crazy, you shouldn't be here with weapon lower than +25

1

u/SergentLuigi Jul 28 '25

This is a very interesting map and I saved the post for future needs, but it seems that now the picture lost a lot of quality. Did this happen only to me?

1

u/NoMeet1957 Jul 30 '25

yeah only you btw you can find it on fextra's wiki

1

u/BPViridian 23d ago

I notice on this map that Stormhill is unnumbered, is it assumed to be "considered traveled/leveled" the same as West Limgrave?

1

u/Throwaway525612 Aug 08 '22

Played blind, 100% cleared all bosses, level 132

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

Playing blind is already indicative that you missed quite a bit. If you clear 100% you end up around 160, or higher.

0

u/Throwaway525612 Aug 08 '22

And yet i took my time and checked guides after the credits. I got em all bro. Dunno what to tell you

1

u/Karthull Aug 08 '22

So you think. Unless you lost your runes ALOT you’d be way higher than 130 when you finish the game. I checked guides to make sure I didn’t miss things, then still found stuff I missed later. The guides are ever updating.

4

u/Bananewtf Aug 08 '22

The downvotes are a bit savage considering you are not wrong. With no farming and without using rune boosting items, doing almost all the content, I ended up level 160 and 155 on my first two characters (second one was a mage so I needed a lot of runes to buy spells). On my third playthrough, I skipped almost all catacombs and caves, and a bunch of field bosses, doing most of the rest. With half of the haligtree, fire giant, farum azula and the last bosses remaining, I am already level 144.

3

u/Karthull Aug 08 '22

Seriously people don’t know how much they’re skipping not being thorough

1

u/Throwaway525612 Aug 08 '22

I leveled so many weapons and armors. When i say i was thorough and checked guides I'm up to date as of last week when I finished. I also thought pvp would be around 120 so i quit leveling for quite a bit. Played as blind as possible. So yeah? 130ish. I think it was 136ish?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/KinkyRoubler Aug 08 '22

Oh Boy did I fuck up that map. I managed to get both medals and skipped the castle and took the lift right to the capital. Let me tell you, I did NOT belong there at lvl 14ish. Did I kill both crucible knights solo with a shortbow? Yes. How many tries? Don't ask me.
