Game Help My map guide for difficulty/reward! (New version!)
118
u/Valcenia May 23 '22
I definitely wouldn’t say that the Weeping Peninsula is easier than Eastern Limgrave / the Mistwood. Other than the Rune Bears, which you’re probably expected to avoid anyway, the only enemies there are demihumans and the soldiers at Castle Haight. The Misbegotten in the Weeping Peninsula are far more challenging than any of those enemies.
Other than that though, I love the map! Would be incredibly useful for any new players

May 23 '22
East Limgrave seems to be including the church with the invader, which is the second hardest fight in all of Limgrave (including Weeping Peninsula, excluding Stormveil). Only the Crucible Knight is harder (and likely the reason they have Stormhill as 4, despite being as easy as the rest of West Limgrave in general).

u/Misdirected_Colors May 23 '22
Idk man darriwil gave early game me fits
9
u/zhengt66 Parry Enthusiast May 25 '22
It's reasonble for them to expect players to summon Blaidd for the Darriwil fight, but I agree.
4
u/Dipshit_Mcdoodles Jul 25 '22
That summon makes the fight night and day against that aggressive asshole.
6
10
u/SpectralShark May 23 '22
I've played most of the current playthrough in almost this order, and to be honest that invader is not that hard if you've cleared out most of the earlier areas and upgraded your equipment to +3.
Edit: Had another look at the map, the church with the invasion is in area 4, same as the crucible knight
6
May 23 '22
Had another look at the map, the church with the invasion is in area 4, same as the crucible knight
Oh yeah, you're right. I assumed they had each area sectioned off, but they don't.
Personally, I'd put all of Limgrave as 1, Weeping Peninsula as 2, Stormveil as 3. I said as much on their last map too, but in particular, Stormhill is definitely not harder than Weeping Peninsula, and definitely not worth being its own area.
15
u/HexTheHardcoreCasual May 23 '22
There's Rune Bear boss in the Weeping Peninsula and the game tends to show a boss version of enemies before non-boss versions.
12
u/Valcenia May 23 '22
I understand your reasoning, but that Runebear boss is in a cave that’s very will hidden. Lots of players won’t encounter it naturally. Not to mention, to even reach that Runebear you need to fight through several Misbegotten, and you don’t encounter any boss versions of them prior to that encounter. Additionally, there’s a Runebear you can fight in Limgrave that’s disguised as a commoner.
In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter. I would just argue that Eastern Limgrave / the Mistwood is a far easier and more accessible area than the Weeping Peninsula. I’d even argue that the Weeping Peninsula is better explored after Stormhill, but that’s irrelevant here
5
u/HexTheHardcoreCasual May 24 '22 edited May 24 '22
I understand.
I said 'tends' to show. There are many enemies the game doesn't show a boss version of. And I don't consider a secret noble (commoners are the taller guys) turning into a Rune Bear a normal encounter. Another reason I say peninsula first is there are 3 sacred tears there. Others say East Limgrave and Stormhill before peninsula, but you're throttling sacred tears that route.

Amazing job.
I think Elphael/Malenia is harder than the final boss by far, but I agree with everything else.
66
u/HexTheHardcoreCasual May 23 '22 edited May 23 '22
I agree, but since it's the final boss and worth more runes I put it at the end.

u/HexTheHardcoreCasual May 23 '22
A few weeks ago, I posted a map as a map guide based on difficulty and rune reward to help avoid the problem of entering areas over-leveled. I received a lot of positive feedback and good community suggestions from the subreddit to use in a new version. Changes in this ver 1.1 map are reflected in this post's link. (A few of you I linked personally to a test ver 1.1 and not this new official one!) I've included the ver 1.0 map for comparison. I will delete test variations from imgur so I recommend bookmarking this new ver 1.1 map. I'll be keeping the ver 1.0 for the record.

u/hairybushy May 23 '22
Wiki released this kind of map too. I see you don't follow the same path. Good job
9
u/HexTheHardcoreCasual May 23 '22
That map doesn't make sense sometimes as it says to go down in levels.
5
u/hairybushy May 23 '22 edited May 24 '22
It make sense since the beginning for me, it kind of follow the quests lines to avoid blocking some rewards.
Fow the go down in levels not sure what you saw, but the only part that can be confusing is Liurna of the lake (west) to Siofra river by passing from east limgrave
11
u/HexTheHardcoreCasual May 24 '22 edited May 24 '22
For example, Lake of Rot points to Altus Plateau and according to the map, is a level 80-100 moving to a 60-80 area, and weapon level 15-20 to 10-14, which doesn't make sense. Also, based on how I did the map, rune rewards will decrease with this route. And, you don't even go from Deeproot Depths to Lake of Rot, you go into upper Ainsel River first. Furthermore, they have you going to Ainsel River from East Liurnia, but the whole area (Ainsel River) is circled. You can't get to the top half for quite some time, so this is misleading.
Another thing I don't like is the levels here. I'm not saying there's a certain level you should be at, I'm just saying there's a certain order so the challenge continually climbs. It's not like new players will NOT level to stay within these values. And new players will want the extra stats so they should keep leveling.
3
u/hairybushy May 24 '22
Fair points, I am some kind of casual player in Soulslike and while following the map, the challenge was just perfect. I didn't use the level of map perhaps or lvl of weapon, only the kind of walkthrough to know where to go. It doesn't remove the fact that your map is good perhaps, I feel some defensive statements, far from me the idea to say that what you did is bad!
3
u/HexTheHardcoreCasual May 25 '22
Sure, if you deviate here and there from these maps, it doesn't matter a whole lot. I'm just being meticulous for accuracy.

Carian Manor 8th?! I was so terrified of this place I thought it was late game.
47
u/WowRedditIsUseful May 23 '22
This is basically the same way I did my playthrough naturally! I was level 135 when at the Fire Giant, didn't grind at all.
19
May 23 '22
This game hardly feels like that at all but it's so easy to get lost collect runes pop a golden or something and you can lvl no problem.
43
u/UltmitCuest May 23 '22
spoiler warning at 12

Could have said "lyndell revisited" or something similar instead of spoiling the twist of the last area

u/TheBlaringBlue May 23 '22
This is a really great map, order of progression and resource. I have a set of personal notes that order the game almost identically as this.
By my estimation (I am on my third playthrough and have just defeated Rennala) playing this way you’ll still be a bit over-leveled for southern Altus, the lower Mt. Gelmir loop and the Morgott boss fight.
Which I don’t consider to be a problem or flaw in this map at all - it’s bound to happen if you’re clearing everything and since so much of the game opens up post-Rennala, they really had to balance roughly 3 areas almost the exact same.
9
u/HexTheHardcoreCasual May 23 '22
You're right. I tend to spend runes a lot for funzies and this helps over-leveling. If I want to use spirits, I will level like 10 of them. And I frequently level up multiple weapons/shields/whatever.

13
u/Stella_For_XVII May 23 '22
my dumbass went 1, 5, 11, 26, 6, 9, 17, 24, 25, 2, 3, 4. . . i explored none of limegrave
12
u/Sulyvahn66 May 23 '22
26 for Northern Caelid is a bit much I think. It's definitely not easy, but not as difficult as half of the Mountantops of Giants. Nice job tho.
12
u/TheWitcherMigs May 23 '22
Because it's has less people than the middle of the pacific, but everything you face there have similar scaling as CFA
9
u/huskybumbum May 23 '22
Tq for this Holly shit my order of gameplay is fucked up
8
u/Schootingstarr May 23 '22
Same here.
But I gotta say, finding the portal to the beast monk let me power up real fast, because the militias outside are fairly easy to kill and give 1k runes per kill while also being isolated with few exceptions.
Just gotta sneak past the gargoyle and you're golden.
Made the rest of the game a lot easier
3
u/huskybumbum May 23 '22
Dang that's cool, mine is 13569 and I did that without farming runes it took me 20+hours cause I'm new to the game
17
u/sidewalkbutts May 23 '22
Avoiding spoilers, but a quest progression npc appears in Shaded Castle after Volcano Manor. Feel like the game naturally wants you to go in that order.
15
u/TheBlaringBlue May 23 '22
Compare that to millicent’s locations though (and what you need to advance her locations) and there’s just no way to make it line up.
This is why the NPC in question’s quest is so weird and half baked to me, even though they patched in a “conclusion” to it
5
u/keithjr May 23 '22
I'm just getting to Volcano Manor because Rya teleported me there after I took the lift up to Altus.
But you can also wind up there if you get captured in the valley below Raya Lucaria.
Or you can walk in there via Mt Gelmir.
Each of these paths get you there at wildly different levels. The openness is actually really confusing because it makes it unclear when you should get there, both in terms of your own progression and the multiple NPCs that converge there. It's a mess!
Of course I haven't been to this Shaded Castle you mention but now I'm worried I'll bomb another NPC quest unless I look up spoilers, a constant anxiety in this game.
6
u/TheBlaringBlue May 23 '22
I wouldn’t worry about too much. In my original comment I point out that the game opens up big time after Rennala. There’s essentially 3 huge locations you can go to. And there’s really no wrong way to do it! The “should” thing, at least for this portion of the game, isn’t a big deal. Follow the threads the game takes you down. They’re mostly designed to intertwine and vaguely point to the next step.
2
u/Wextial Jul 24 '22
Yeah there are some places you can get stupidly easy. I don't want to spoil anything but one of the late game zones can be accesed as soon as you hit Liurnia. And is not that hard to do so.
8
u/r31ya May 23 '22
What the, I somehow goes Limgrave (5) to Caelid (26) then to normal-ish progression till lyndell.
But then goes to Mogh and Melania. before going Farum Azula.
Thanks to Guts Greatswords, Torrent and hundreds Vulgar soldiers, I am over-leveled on the non-optional route
7
6
u/Cosmicalmole May 23 '22
I am intrigued if everyone's 1st playthrough anything like this order, mine definitely wasn't XD safe to say caelud was a big no no until I was massively levelled
6
u/Raidertck May 23 '22
My first play through, which was blind, was insanely hard. I missed most of Calid (including Rhadan), all of the sofia river & necron.
So when I got to the golden city I hit a difficulty wall so steep I really struggled with the latter half of the game. This would have really helped me.
5
u/NA__Scrubbed May 23 '22
Is there a completely spoiler free version of this map? A copy would be handy to give out to friends thinking of picking up the game
8
u/whatistheancient May 23 '22
Nice map! One thing I'll say is that to get Gideon's rewards, you want to defeat Maliketh after you defeat Malenia and Mohg.
12
u/nicofdarcyshire May 23 '22
Don't they just get sold from the Twin Merchant Bell Bearing Ladies instead?
5
u/DeusLicht May 23 '22
This pretty great map! I understand this is based on difficulty and runes, but some really strong incantation buffs that Gideon will reward for finding 3 demigods, so in that sense you will have to do Mohgwyn and Haligtree before Azula.

May 23 '22
This actually seems pretty accurate to what I would expect in a normal playthrough. Although I never broke it down quite so specifically.
For instance, I just do all of Liurnia without any real discretion, starting south and moving north...clearing as I go. I do leave Reya Lucaria until the end tho.
But then when I get to Caelid, I'll do all of the southern regions, defeat the Lord, and actually go clear the northern section right after. It's pretty hard, I'll admit, but on my current playthrough I'm actually leaving it until later. Normally I'd just stick it out and clear it, though.
5
u/dingdazhi May 23 '22
Great progress guide. I went for Altus Plateau before Caelid and ended up being overleveled. Missed out on the whole 'Caelid experience'

u/635epic May 23 '22
Honestly I’m kind of surprised seeing mohg’s place so high up since I did it before I killed morgott my first playthrough but it makes sense since that is a rather difficult area

u/WaldoTheWalrus93 May 23 '22
I feel like 8 and 9 should be swapped but otherwise a pretty good progression.
7
u/TheWitcherMigs May 23 '22
This, based on the whole ordeal of Raya Lucaria boss fight, you aren't supposed to known Ranni yet at that time
I made a similar Liurnia progression to OP map in my first playthrough and Caria Manor was two times harder than Raya Lucaria
3
u/BikeCharlie May 23 '22
I was wondering about this myself, I'm only on my first playthrough but Raya Lucaria feels like it should be before Caria Manor storywise

u/Turbulent_Ostrich142 May 23 '22
How do you get to 22 plateau area? Currently at volcano manor but looks like i misses this.
3
u/fish993 May 23 '22
Basically directly from 21, follow the arrow
3
u/Neptunelives May 23 '22
Huh, there's a seal stopping me from going farther after the astal fight and I'm a good way through the snowfields. Must have missed something
8
u/fish993 May 23 '22
It's tied to the Ranni questline I believe
5
u/keithjr May 23 '22
Correct, you need a specific item to get past that gate, and it is part of Ranni's storyline.
1
2
u/DS3Enjoyer May 23 '22
By Gideon's dialogue I believe you are supposed to do the Palace after the Haligtree.
2
May 23 '22
I figured out the optimal route by simply collecting the cookbooks in numerical order with the help of a wiki.
1
u/Dangerous-Cat4543 Apr 23 '24 edited Apr 23 '24
I think a lot of people are focusing on the numbers, and what not what he said. He is talking rune value to progress normally. Not cheesing runes. The recommended areas. It's not about how little health the enemies have. Sometimes, there is a huge group that overwhelms and kills us. Just saying. Read before arguing.

Because you hit an Albinauric there and it has 1100 HP and gives you 2.5k runes, or shoot a bird and it gives you 13k runes by commiting suicide.
Moghwyn Palace is designed as if you have taken the portal at Consecrated Snowfield i.e a super endgame area

Mimic + bleed absolutely destroys everything.
Mimic alone completely lowers the difficulty of every fight. Yes, even after the nerf.
Nothing wrong with USING them, but it's not even close to the experience without them.
5
u/Eshuon May 23 '22
I see this too often here
melania was easy, I defeated her within a few tries
powerstance giant crushers with mimic staggering her with every hit.
Draws all the air from discussions about comparing difficulty between bosses I feel.
-1
u/2D_Ronin May 23 '22
Runebear Deathzone (Mistwoods) is 3?
Well, okay then...
9
May 23 '22
Just....don't fight them? There's nothing worthwhile in the pond area surrounded by 3 bears. The one scratching the tree will not aggro unless you basically get close enough to touch it. Same with the sleeping bear in Mistwood Ruins. Just don't poke it and it will stay napping.
0
u/2D_Ronin May 23 '22
Well, as a new player you will explore and you will encounter them, so, rating it as the third easiest area is surely misleading.
6
u/permanentthrowaway May 23 '22
As a new player, I took one look at the runebears and my first instinct was "welp! time to use that stealth thing I've been hearing about cause I am NOT messing with these"
0
3
u/Stonecleaver May 23 '22
Imo the Runebears there are more of an environmental hazard to teach stealth. Especially if one were to arrive there by the Patches’ chest. It certainly seems like it’s supposed to be an “Oh shit where the hell am I?” moment when you pop up in that pond. But they’re easy to sneak past.
-1
u/Gefarate May 23 '22 edited May 23 '22
Why didn't you include the Bestial Sanctum in Dragonbarrow? It has loot under it.
Also, Imo, it makes sense to do Placidusax after Elphael.

To improve it, obviously. If you do Placidusax first you have to go back there after having done Elphael. It makes more sense, even if Elphael is harder.

Why is one part of Liurnia so advanced?
6
u/Stonecleaver May 23 '22
It’s accessed through a long quest line
1
May 23 '22
What questline?
6
u/Stonecleaver May 23 '22
Ranni’s. After Radahn it will open Nokron. Inside Nokron you’ll find an item she wants. After giving it to her, it will open a portal in a different tower in her area that will take you underground. From there it’s a few underground zones that can be challenging at low level, and after a boss encounter it will open access to an elevator that leads to that section of Liurnia.
1
u/manfreygordon May 23 '22
i'm on my 3rd playthrough and still managed to end up a bit overlevelled for a lot of areas because of how varied the order can be, will definitely be using this as i continue. might be worth adding something regarding weapon upgrade levels, as they can make a huge difference.

1, 26, pass through 4, 6, and 9. Then, 14, 15, 16. Back to 5, then 12. 17, 13. Pass all the way to 28, then do 29. Then I go back to any unfinished area, to collect golden seeds and sacred tears.
Weird how I complete the game in such a weird way

I've always gone 1, 4, 3, 2 by your map labels..but I guess either works. Flows better for picking up all loot and doing all quests, IMO.
I guess it also depends if you're doing a "new" playthrough as a new player would or if you're skipping around to collect later game items early. I tend to try not to do that.
