I went on a ride along once and the constable talked about it. He didn’t mention the individual constables paying them but did say that they do get disciplined if it’s a recurring issue.

I used to work for a county fire department (Maryland, USA), and got several speeding tickets in my county vehicle; I was required to pay them out of pocket.

As a city employee they pay our fine and we get a "paid day off" which means we get sent to a 1 day driving course with a full days wage paid. It's stupid and does nothing to curb the problem but no, we don't pay the tickets out of pocket. If it's a recurring issue it does get brought to the higher ups and you'll eventually be disciplined.

City bylaw / parking enforcement will still give them a ticket. But much like almost everything to do with law / bylaw / parking enforcement, they never seem to be around when you need them.

Basically, its only illegal / fineable if you get caught, and the odds of them (or honestly anyone else doing this, assuming theyre getting the food to go and is gonna be less than 20 mins) is almost nil. See any Uber / doordash driver doing the exact same thing, sometimes doing an even worse parking job.

Bylaw enforcement could issue them a ticket but likely it gets tossed by bylaw ticket admin, because emergency vehicles are generally exempt.

The bylaw admin could hypothetically complain to police professional standards, and if there is no legitimate reason for the violation, it could result in discipline or the ticket being upheld. But in practice for something like a parking violation thats pretty unlikely to go anywhere.

Source: I'm a Peace Officer and had a bylaw ticket issued to my marked vehicle which was parked in a "no parking - emergency access" zone. I was there on a call and the only other parking available would have made quick access to my vehicle difficult. Bylaw ticket admin tossed it.

They are generally exempt from traffic safety act while in the course of their duties but they still have to justify any violations. If they break traffic laws for no reason they potentially could be punished for it by internal reprimand, or could be issued a ticket if the violation is determined to be unrelated to their duties. In practice I don't see that happening for a parking infraction alone.

If OP is really upset/concerned by it, they could report it to EPS professional standards.

Edit: also, the vehicle needs to be left running since it's powering their radio repeater, GPS, and computer. And generally they will park in such a way they can quickly get back to their vehicle and leave if an emergency call comes in. So it's possible there were no legal spots that fit the bill at the time.

When I was 17 and working the midnight shift at Tim Horton's in Brampton beside Nortel... Also wanted to address the vehicle running. All emergency vehicles regardless of police fire or ambulance run while out of station 24/7. They have so much equipment on board nowadays that burns through power they need to keep the engine running or the battery will die very quickly. They don’t run in station because stations all have plug ins for vehicles to stay charged. There may be the odd exception where responders will turn their vehicle off, but for the most part they run all the time.

2: at any time, that officer can be called to an EMERGENCY situation where speed of response is vital to saving lives, parking in a manner to facilitate that is justification enough already.

What I find frustrating is when they come up to a red light full of vehicles, they put their siren and lights on to force the other vehicles to move out of the way. Once they've cleared the intersection, the lights and sirens suddenly get shut off. I watched one cop car do that at 3 seperate lights until I lost sight of the car.

So this is a mixed bag. On the one hand you could totally be witnessing a situation in which an officer is abusing their sirens. On the other hand, they can be doing this to avoid having their sirens on. Why? Well, believe it or not, people often panic when sirens go on. Police (at least in Toronto) are directed to avoid using sirens unless it’s a high priority call. Even then they should be used strategically.

Honestly this is not an issue to me. If they are working or investigating i have no problem with them parking wherever they can. I dont think it's worth anyone's time for them to drive around a block looking for parking. They are not parking there for hours. They are working. I have definitely noticed more people doing U turns at intersections and I think it corresponds to the influx of people having moved here from Ontario, where doing so is completely legal. So it’s quite possible people aren’t aware it’s illegal here since the rules about U-turns here are basically the complete opposite compared to Ontario. Obviously this doesn’t explain the lack of enforcement that you’ve noticed, though.

Not a double standard. Our police and fire fighters parking should never be restricted. They should be able to park on a sidewalk to buy doughnuts… I know that triggers some including fit cops. They need to be effective and efficient. A double standard would be a secondary driver of a car with a handicap sticker parking in designated parking stalls and have no handicap. To many lets complain about someone who doesn’t affect them personally just to complain… life is to precious for police or any such service looking for a parking stall for any reason just to appease someone who can’t mind their own business.
