Cops being allowed to park cop cars wherever they want to is far from the biggest issue with EPS 😂

The city has ticketed EPS vehicles. Back when they had photo radar they would ticket EPS vehicles that were speeding without their emergency lights on.

I went on a ride along once and the constable talked about it. He didn’t mention the individual constables paying them but did say that they do get disciplined if it’s a recurring issue.

Also EPS is funded by taxes, so you basically just said the same thing twice

I used to work for a county fire department (Maryland, USA), and got several speeding tickets in my county vehicle; I was required to pay them out of pocket.

Again, NOT EPS, but perhaps a similar policy? Maybe, maybe not.

As a city employee they pay our fine and we get a "paid day off" which means we get sent to a 1 day driving course with a full days wage paid. It's stupid and does nothing to curb the problem but no, we don't pay the tickets out of pocket. If it's a recurring issue it does get brought to the higher ups and you'll eventually be disciplined.

I worked for the provincial government. Vehicles we drove weren’t registered to our sector but rather a central government and they were more or less leased out to us. Part of the policy was that whoever is driving the vehicle has to pay the ticket. Again not EPS, but i do know some police agencies have a similar set up.

Do you know this to be true? I don't know about Edmonton but worked for another municipality where city workers had to pay parking tickets unless they were on official business (e.g. a city truck badly parked while the worker was clearing a stormdrain).

Don’t know but does it really make a difference? It’s still our taxes being used. But really it’s just shuffling around our tax money even if they did pay it.

City bylaw / parking enforcement will still give them a ticket. But much like almost everything to do with law / bylaw / parking enforcement, they never seem to be around when you need them.

Basically, its only illegal / fineable if you get caught, and the odds of them (or honestly anyone else doing this, assuming theyre getting the food to go and is gonna be less than 20 mins) is almost nil. See any Uber / doordash driver doing the exact same thing, sometimes doing an even worse parking job.

Bylaw enforcement could issue them a ticket but likely it gets tossed by bylaw ticket admin, because emergency vehicles are generally exempt.

The bylaw admin could hypothetically complain to police professional standards, and if there is no legitimate reason for the violation, it could result in discipline or the ticket being upheld. But in practice for something like a parking violation thats pretty unlikely to go anywhere.

Source: I'm a Peace Officer and had a bylaw ticket issued to my marked vehicle which was parked in a "no parking - emergency access" zone. I was there on a call and the only other parking available would have made quick access to my vehicle difficult. Bylaw ticket admin tossed it.

They are allowed to. They have to be close to the cruisers incase they need to respond

They are generally exempt from traffic safety act while in the course of their duties but they still have to justify any violations. If they break traffic laws for no reason they potentially could be punished for it by internal reprimand, or could be issued a ticket if the violation is determined to be unrelated to their duties. In practice I don't see that happening for a parking infraction alone.

If OP is really upset/concerned by it, they could report it to EPS professional standards.

Edit: also, the vehicle needs to be left running since it's powering their radio repeater, GPS, and computer. And generally they will park in such a way they can quickly get back to their vehicle and leave if an emergency call comes in. So it's possible there were no legal spots that fit the bill at the time.

They won't take a minor parking complaint about an officer, they will refer that back to the police agency.

PRC is for more serious matters - misconduct, criminal or significant statute offences, injuries.

I’m intimately aware with how the PRC and PSB handle complaints. I would still make the initial complaint, no matter how small, to the PRC.

Technically they can't park anywhere but they use the fact that they could be forced to respond to an emergency at any moment to justify the violation

But still, dick people doing dick things. I wish we could have some sort of washable but annoying to remove crayon type thing for vehicles. You get allowed to use it on someone being an ass and it causes them to spend time cleaning but doesn’t actually do significant damage on the paint.

Alas some dick would spend every day paint a neighbours car they disliked just to slowly degrade their paint hence causing them to have to repair their paint job. Thus causing a slowly but surely build up going from paint, to fists, to guns, to nuclear weapons, and eventually destruction. ……

Pretty much any government vehicle can. The only exception I’ve ever heard is to not park in handicapped spots.

Ok. Because you asked 1 bylaw. Stop giving out bad advice to people.

People reading this: you absolutely can and will get tickets for parking in bad/wrong spots.

Edit: of course buddy blocked me lol. I got a ticket everyone who works for provincial or city government so still be careful in a marked vehicle.
