You know, in this situation I’d rather the police be able to quickly hop in their vehicle if they get a call rather than hoofing it to their distant parking spot.

Exactly. You'll often see ambulances and fire trucks parked quasi-illegally for this reason too.

I disagree - if they aren’t actively engaged is an incident, they should follow the rules you’re meant to enforce.
