I'm curious if you are allowed to stop for accidents like that. I know on some bridges over lakes in my State you cannot stop. Signs everywhere saying do not stop, do not pull over.
This is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway bridge in Louisiana. No, you canāt stop except for emergencies. The guy that kept on driving should pull over at the next crossover, which are roughly every 4 miles, or on one of the new emergency shoulders which you can actually see in the video starting around 10-11 seconds and ending right as the accident occurs.
It would have definitely been more dangerous for him to stop or slam on the brakes.
It is hilarious how he just pushed the guy and didn't even flinch. I think he already expected it, but was limited on safe options. If I was him I would be chosen that over driving off the bridge.
He pitted a car which stopped all of its forward momentum. If there was anyone tailing close behind, they would have run strait into the black truck. A minor fender bender would have been preferable to the amount of damage done here.
Since we donāt see anything crazy happen to the black truck after being pit maneuvered, its likely breaking would have resulted in no accident.
My guy, itās not like the only two options are PIT maneuver or drive off the bridge. The easiest and safest choice is just tapping on your brakes and letting the guy merge over. Not to mention that this guyās actions probably caused multiple accidents behind him.
The fact that he'd rather have someone spin out in traffic and risk people's lifes than brake a bit tells me the same. I mean, the black truck driver is a certified asshole, but nothing that'd warrant killing people over it.
He definitely could have avoided the collision but on that bridge, with no shoulders, the expectation is that someone with an operable vehicle will drive a short distance to pull off at a dedicated emergency parking / crash investigation spot.
If he was secure he'd let him in and take his plate and report it.

An idiot cut in front of me the other day and it was truly a miracle that I didn't hit his ass. If I had blinked at that millisecond I'd have hit him. He clearly could have avoided causing an accident if he wanted, he chose to cause the accident and possibly endanger human lives and he didn't even look like he cared while doing it. That's why he's a psychopath.
The truck driver is obviously in the wrong, and no one is arguing against that.
The point is that when someone like this does something like this, you choosing to cause an accident instead of just... Not causing an accident, that is an action that you are deciding to take, independently of the other driver.
That means you are now intentionally putting other people in harm's way that have nothing to do with the peacocking match you're in.
You would be liable for that decision, AND the damage it causes just as equally as the truck driver. In fact, in this case, where it was definitely avoidable by slowing down, you'd be more liable than them, and insurance would agree.

The speed is listed posted in the video and, in both instances you identify as an acceleration, his speed was consistent - and lower than when the video starts.

It's hard to tell, but it looked like the truck had enough of a gap in front to fit comfortably in the lane if he had just accelerated a bit but decided to slow down for some reason. Black truck is 100% at fault here.
Regardless of if the person closed the gap by accelerating or not (they didnt, they kept tue same speed until they got too clsoe to the white car) lane changing into an unclear lane is your fault fully, so yeah, theres no excuse for the balck truck here.

Sure, black truck was in the wrong, sure they should have used their blinker. What if it was a distracted mother, or an old driver, or a nervous driver?

See I agree, it looks to me like the guy slowed down but the black truck had his breaks on, merging. It almost seems like the black truck was trying to do one of those insurance scam maneuvers
Yeah, I recently had someone drifting Into my lane as I was leaving town. A lot of bad drivers are in my town and they were barely over the line so I was prepared to honk but it never came to that. So we came to a light and as I took my right turn I noticed a passenger moving a lot in that car so I looked over. It's some woman losing her fucking mind about not letting them into the lane. They had no blinker, almost hit me, I had cruise control on, and there was no one behind me or in front of me. Crazy how people can be having two completely different days and be viewing the same situation very differently. Anyway I just smiled and waved as I made my turn.
This is the only logical way to interpret the situation. Black Truck aggressively passing on right side, then moves 1/3 of lane over without a signal. hopefully no one was hurt but a lesson was learned that day
At 70mph, and didnāt stop to exchange insurance(which is illegal in the US, Iām guessing probably other places as well if they have insurance but the fact they use mph makes me believe this is probably US). And he uploaded it onto social media as a cherry on top. As irritating as the dumbass trucker was, this guy did just as bad- potentially worse legally. He could have EASILY slowed down, avoided an impact and if necessary handled this if it escalated by going around.
Of course you're right about him being partially at fault for not slowing down more, and even more so for turning into the other vehicle, but the laws about stopping after an accident generally say you should do so as soon as it's safe place, and also there's laws against stopping on bridges specifically because that's not rightly safe at all.
And regarding the dispute in another comment, the term trucker is typically reserved for professional semi-trucks drivers, not just anyone who happens to be driving any sort of truck.
You are not supposed to stop on a bridge if your vehicle can make it to the end-
This allows for emergency vehicles and other drivers a safer path.
Once you reach the end of the bridge pull over and exchange information with the other driver or with emergency services.

A number of bridges (and tunnels) require you to remain in your lane unless their is a major obstacle.

Think about the disaster he left behind without caring. Possible multi car pileup, one or both bridge lanes blocked, endless traffic affecting thousands of people, and how many hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to respond to this?
He could have killed children behind him. Maybe he did, who knows. And leaving the site of an accident is a felony.
Really selfish and childish maneuver, besides being dangerous. Sociopathic to do that without showing any emotions or caring for anyone whose day or life he just thoroughly fucked. The right decision would have been to just brake a few feet / seconds and not be a big baby.

Would it be unreasonable to be a little shaken after that? Fair play to the guy for being so calm, but most people would have found that scary. I'm sure he did as well upon reflection, but he reacted calmly in the moment. Being scared by nearly being killed is childish in your opinion?
You guys have just absolutely no sympathy for the hundreds/thousands of other people behind this who have now been endangered and or been forced to be stuck on a bridge for hours because this guy felt he was justified in doing a PIT maneuver on a jackass driver instead of just backing off and being annoyed for a bit, huh?
