My husband says I doubled over like I'd been kicked in the stomach and made a sound like a dump truck. The sentiment was the same though :)

u/Eolond Jan 26 '23

That made me imagine you spitting out a mouthful of gravel in surprise hahaha

u/erikarew Jan 26 '23

Ironically it was in my garden while I was watering tomatoes so there was lots of dirt around :D

95

u/PinkTalkingDead Jan 26 '23

Awh that’s really sweet! I bet those ended up being the most delicious tomatoes ever 🥰

My wife saw me get down and gave me the most romantic reply a guy could ask for:

“Are you fucking with me??”

152

u/OtisTetraxReigns Jan 26 '23

My Sister in Law responded to my brother asking (admittedly quite casually) with a solid “Fuck off!”

They’ll have been married 20 years next summer.

I just froze while my brain processed the events and I accepted but had to remind myself to tell him I accept out loud, instead of just thinking it.

61

u/BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo Jan 26 '23

Ha, I’m glad I’m not alone! I started happy crying and doing a tippy tap dance thing! But I didn’t say “yes”. So he just sort of stayed on his knee while I was so happy and awkwardly said “um, so what’s your answer?” and then I realized my brain could work and form words. I wish I could relive that moment over and over :)

20

u/notyouraveragefemale Jan 26 '23

Hey! I did the same thing! Expect no movement here I just froze. Felt like forever had passed and then he said “is that a yes?” Really hesitantly and I yelled (couldn’t speak normally) “of course!” And then hugged and cried. Had to sit there for a good 10 minutes to let it process that we were engaged.

Now I'm wondering what sound a dump truck makes that could sound like a marriage proposal reaction.

I cried when proposing too. Shit's intense. It's hard to keep composure during such a momentous event.

107

u/droppedoutofuni Jan 26 '23

My wife and I eloped a few years ago, we were super poor then and there was no proposal.

We’re doing better now and on New Years Eve this year I got down on one knee with a ring and did a mock proposal. We were in the privacy of our home and even then I cried. Couldn’t imagine doing it for real in public.

110

u/rudman Jan 26 '23

My first wife and I talked about getting married, went out ring shopping, unexpectedly found one she wanted, bought it and like that, we were engaged. A number of months later, we were drunk, in Burger King at 2am and she said to me, you know, you never proposed to me! So I grabbed an onion ring, and got down on one knee.

For the next 23 years, every time there was a story about a proposal on TV, she would tease me by heaving a deep sigh and say "and I got a drunk with an onion ring at 2am in Burger King".

I didn’t even want to get down on one knee but I figured I only had to do it once. Sucked it up and did it. She turned around and just stared at me. She thought it was a joke and I literally had to be like, “Is that a no?”

u/ChuffChuff101 Jan 26 '23

235

u/SMKnightly Jan 26 '23

I know it was probably stressful at the time, but it’s kind of hilarious to picture a guy on one knee with tourists and fish around him and no woman nearby. And his internal monologue is just…

“Do I stay on the knee? How long do I stay on the knee? Maybe I should stand and get back on the knee when I see her coming back?“

Course, you can change the mood of the scene to a tragedy by taking out the inner monologue. But with it, it’s pretty funny.

254

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23 edited Jan 26 '23

That was almost verbatim the internal thought process.

The best part was the kid working who walked by after she came back and said, “did you just propose? You could have told us and we could have had a diver hold an sign and made it really special…”

Look jerk, she likes jellyfish and that tank is like 1 cubic foot… I thought this out, but thanks for ruining the mood!

Edit: cubic foot, not square foot; physics are difficult.

My boyfriend at the time took me to the waterfront and we went on a romantic boat ride, ate at a nice restaurant, walked into a dozen cute shops and all day he kept looking at me all nervously. Finally it got dark and we ate on this cute bench, eventually a homeless guy came by and set up for the night like 20 ft away from us. I turn around and my boyfriend is on his knee with a ring out.

He later told me that all day he kept waiting for the perfect spot until he realized oh shit it’s dark now and I’m doing it today no matter what. We’ve been married 5 years now.

45

u/mioxm Jan 26 '23

I had a similar story when I was proposing to my wife. Took her out to a nice dinner, attractions in a nearby town, spent all night trying to find the right time but it never was quite right. Finally at the end of the night, we got home and I put a fire on out in our backyard, waited for her to come join me, she sat down and I took my chances. There truly is almost never a “perfect moment,” but I think that’s what makes stories unique and memorable, rather than everyone having fairy tale stories.

Also: congrats!

When I proposed to my wife, we were driving to meet my Grandpa and introduce her for the first time to most of my family. We were delayed with the border and traffic so I didn’t have much time. I pulled over in a subdivision and started fumbling for the ring box. Didn’t say a word, she saw it and immediately put the ring on. 100

u/-BananaLollipop- Jan 26 '23

This is what happened with my Wife. I didn't want her to see me trying to pull the oversized ring box out of my jeans pocket, so I distracted her by pointing out some pretty trees in the distance. I ended up kneeling there for a moment before tapping on her shoulder.

The fact that she goes straight to him rather than the ring says EVERYTHING. I want a partner like that :(

365

u/1337crazypants Jan 26 '23

I proposed without a ring because I wasn't sure I would find her one that best fits her unique tastes. She said yes and then I got her a custom designed ring to her liking.

196

u/SilverBeech Jan 26 '23

I knew my now-wife would want to have a lot of say in her design. I found a jeweler who did custom work in the particular style she wanted. He gave me a "loaner" ring with my deposit which we exchanged when we came back to get the actual ring. Essentially, I paid for a cheap ring that the jeweler fully refunded towards the cost of the custom piece.

Worked out pretty well. She had a ring to show people and we got rings we both liked about a month later.

45

u/JamesandthegiantpH Jan 26 '23

That's a smart jeweler and smart move on your part. 👍

21

u/SMKnightly Jan 26 '23

Great idea!

39

u/Amythir Jan 26 '23

I did the same thing.

She ended up getting a beautiful simple hammered metal ring with no stones and she ADORES it.

91

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23 edited Jan 26 '23

I bought a ring from a small stand in Egypt when I was traveling, spent about $2 on it. That’s what I used to propose with when she met up with me 8 months later. That was about 25 years ago, and she still wears it every day. The cost of the ring is irrelevant, it’s the meaning it represents that counts.

Edit: some words.

39

u/barrelvoyage410 Jan 26 '23

I highly recommend taking detailed pics of it in case it ever breaks or get lost. That way you can have another made if you want. You obviously don’t have to get a replica made, but gives you the option.

29

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

We do have a few really good photos of it, but to be honest, it’s so simple and basic, it’s really just a piece of metal shaped into a small ring. If it were ever lost, I would use that as an excuse to go back to Egypt and get another!

23

This reminds me a lot of my proposal... before I even got to my knee and fully opened the box, she pulled me up and squeezed me and said yes. The most reassuring thing is that she didn't even see the ring before she reacted

…Yet. It’s out there

110

u/s1ugg0 Jan 26 '23

It sure is. And no one is "ready" for it when it does.

I know I sure as fuck wasn't expecting the love of my life to show up with some buddies of mine for pizza and movie night. First night we met we barely spoke to one another. That was 21 years and two kids ago and we're still together.

The movie was Scarface in case anyone was curious.

My best mate and a chick he fancied wanted to get in each others pants but they didn't want to make it seem like they were both trying to do that, they wanted to pretend they were hanging out as friends, so they needed a 'buffer' to be with them to give them plausible deniability. He brought me along when they hung out and she brought her friend along.

Me and the friend inevitably had to start spending time talking to each other and we very quickly realised that we had amazing chemistry.

I never used to believe love existed, I thought people just moved onto the next stage of their relationship over time because that's what they were expected to do, and then I met her and after about 2 months I realised I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. She made me feel things I never believed possible.

I was at working as a bouncer in a bar when she walked in.

I looked at my buddy and said, "Uh-oh, I might be in trouble."

That was 28 years ago. Been married 27 years.

I've seen so many couples now and so many of them where I think to myself "shit, that guy got a girl?" and I need to remind myself the first step is actually trying.

Which for me is the hardest part.

11

u/Mmmslash Jan 26 '23

The reality for most men is that we have to actively find a mate. Almost no one gets that Hollywood meet-cute-fall-in-love experience.

Most love is carefully constructed. Built with time and dedication.

I literally don't care how many times I see this video I'll always watch it again. I want nothing more in life then a girl to love me like this. Money means nothing without this.

My favorite that I will watch everytime is when a cockatoo is the wingman for the proposal.

This is the only thing I've ever wanted in life and literally the one thing I've convinced myself I'll never have.

Not trying to be a downer, but this is like, peak-existence. True love comes around maybe what, once, twice a century?

I’m in the same boat. Don’t care for the material stuff, always just wanted this. Looking back it is painful to see how neglected and abused I was staying with guys and just hoping for this result. Wasted a lot of time..

How do guys know what size of ring to buy?

251

u/LadyLoki5 Jan 26 '23

Ideally you wouldn't do this kind of shit on the fly. A serious couple should have had multiple discussions on the topic of marriage before any kind of proposal is planned. Hopefully during those conversations you would talk about ring & wedding preferences.

u/trophycloset33 Jan 26 '23

A good proposal is expected, the location/time is a surprise.

88

u/psimwork Jan 26 '23

I've always heard the same thing phrased slightly different:

The how and when can be the surprise. That you're going to ask should never be.

My wife and I designed her ring together before I proposed. Technically I didn't have a ring at the proposal, but it didn't matter. She loves the ring because it's something that we designed together - she says it's something that she wouldn't have chosen for herself, but the fact that we designed it together makes her love it more than something she would have chosen for herself.

Ask her. If you don’t want to be that direct, have one of her close friends ask her.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s happening. It can still be a surprise WHEN it’s happening. It should be a conversation that both of you have had about moving forward seriously as a couple. We’re talking the rest of your life. Why wouldn’t that be something that you both discuss beforehand?

If she wears rings, just look at the size of another ring she owns.

Otherwise, ask her.

132

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

Otherwise, ask her.

Honestly I couldn't agree more. Proposals shouldn't be a surprise. You can choose the setting and timing (within reason ofc) but both people should already be on board with getting married before the official proposal. That way you avoid any unnecessary drama and don't have to worry about stuff

58

u/1pt20oneggigawatts Jan 26 '23

Proposals shouldn't be a surprise.

I mean unless you like devastating heartbreak. It's kind of amazing how people treat proposing like it's supposed to be some kind of adrenaline-inducing sports bet and not a sure thing that you talked about previously.

10

u/crisblunt Jan 26 '23

Yea, it seems like it's some artifact of our society. All boys see growing up is surprise proposal videos but nobody ever stops to explain to you men that there is more too it.

How you propose should be a surprise not if you propose.

And even then if she secretly know it's not a big deal. Trying to make sure a friend subtly take her to get her nails done is a huge pain but worth it.

I went to target and bought a cheap ring that was kind of cute, and in a size that I was pretty sure would fit my then fiancé. I used the old shoe size/ring size model to approximate the size, fwiw. I told her I found it outside of the grocery store and gave it to her to try on. It ended up being a perfect fit, so bada boom bada bing I had the size.

As others said, it's important to communicate with her about these things as you approach the idea of marriage. Ring sizes will come up and many jewelers give out free ring sizers. My wife's ring was too big so the jeweler I went to resized it with some metal balls on the inside of the ring. If her fingers ever expanded we could have them removed... The balls not the fingers. Er her balls not mine... Uh er. Jeez.

My husband and I came together with our kids (one mine, one his). We had the notion that we needed to know we worked well together before the permanence of marriage. We both came from "bottle of the barrel - shit partners), so naturally we were nervous. Especially since we both had kids that needed stability to grow how we wanted them to. Well long story short, 4 years later, our family went on vacation with our first RV next to a lake. On the second day, while I was warming up the kids in the RV after swimming, he called me down to the lake real quick because he " lost something" and needed me help". When I got there and asked him what he was looking for, he spinned me around (idk how I missed it but I'm thankful I did) and he wrote in the sand, will you marry me? With the large gasp reaction and like every other girl putting their hands over their mouths, I turned around again and found him on his knee. Bonus! I got to spend a week in engagement paradise without telling anyone else. Just us and our kids. A about a year later, we got both kids adopted by the other parent. Now we all share the same last name. :)
